OASIS ORDER PROVIDES A JOLT TO FRENCH SHIPBUILDING A contract worth more than 1 billion euros (1.33 billion dollars) to build a 5,400passenger cruise ship for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) won by the French unit of the shipbuilder STX Europe provides a welcome jolt for ship-building on France’s west coast, the government said.

Chantiers de l'Atlantique, is a Saint-Nazaire, France based shipyard; which forms part of the STX France SA business unit, majority owned by STX Europe with a 66.6% stake and the balance 33.34% held by the French state.

Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said the deal would ensure long-term business for the shipbuilding industry in the French coastal city of Saint-Nazaire. The deal provides a boost to STX France–in which the French state holds a 33.3% stake–after a two-year drought in orders, and comes as the French government struggles to boost the competitiveness of French companies against a backdrop of an unemployment rate running over 10%.

By itself, however, the contract won’t be enough to lift employment at the shipyard, known as Chantiers de l’Atlantique, or Atlantic shipyard, where the number of employees has been halved over the past decade, according to the chief executive of STX France, Laurent Castaing. “The shipyard needs more than this to survive,” he said in a telephone interview. “We are seeking other orders and there will be more before the end of 2013,” he added. The yard, majority-owned by a unit of South Korea-based STX Shipbuilding Co., is the only one left in France capable of building large military ships such as aircraft carriers. The country’s Strategic Investment Fund bought into the Chantiers de l’Atlantique in 2008 in a bid to protect what it considers a strategic interest for the country, after its former owner Aker Yards ASA–Europe’s biggest shipbuilder–was bought by the Korean company. Mr. Castaing said that the government played a key role in the success of the Royal Caribbean Cruise’s bid, by accelerating the government’s export financing insurance and guarantee mechanism, cutting the administrative procedure to around three weeks, down from several months. “If it had taken six months, I think that this contract would have escaped us,” he said. Mr Castaing said the French shipyard got the contract after financing problems tripped up a bid from STX Europe’s Finnish operations, which had built two previous Oasisclass cruise ships, the world’s largest cruise ships, for Royal Caribbean. The two ships currently operate in the Caribbean with features such as spas, miniature golf courses and basketball courts. The new ship will be the third vessel of its type for the cruise line operator, and is set for delivery in mid 2016. The contract also includes an option for a fourth vessel of the same model at a similar price, for delivery in 2018, Royal Caribbean said in a statement. If the option is triggered, the French shipyard would be able to hire new staff, Mr Castaing said. The site currently has 4,000 workers, half of whom are employed by STX France and the remainder by subcontractors. In 2000, the Chantiers de l’Atlantique, as STX France was known at the time, had 4,000 employees, excluding subcontractors. STX France has been working to diversify its business offering. The company also builds support structures for offshore wind farms and is bidding for contracts to supply specialized vessels to carry out offshore installation and maintenance for the energy industry. ************************

INTERNATIONAL NEWS Royal Caribbean Orders Third Oasis-Class Ship from France - Dec 27, 2012 Royal Caribbean has pulled the trigger on a third (and possibly fourth) Oasis-class cruise ship from STX Europe. Royal Caribbean placed the order for the new ship at STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard, a departure from STX Finland’s yard in Turku where the first two Oasis-class ships – OASIS OF THE SEAS and ALLURE OF THE SEAS – were built. Reports said that the company had been negotiating with STX Finland, but financial support from the Finnish government had fallen through. The new ship is expected to be delivered in 2016 and is said to come at a lower price per berth than the previous two vessels, which were built for about $1.4 billion each in 2006. The contract with STX France also includes a one year option for a second ship, which would be delivered in 2018.

Steve Jobs’ Superyacht Impounded in Over Unpaid Bills - Dec 21, 2012 A superyacht built for Apple Inc’s late co-founder Steve Jobs has been impounded in Amsterdam because of a dispute over an unpaid bill to designer Philippe Starck, a lawyer said. Jobs, who died last year after making his name and fortune at Apple, never got to use the yacht – called Venus – but had commissioned the French designer to work on the vessel, which cost more than 100 million euros to build. A lawyer representing Starck’s company Ubik told Reuters his client had received 6 million euros out of a 9 million euro commission for his work on the minimalist vessel and was now seeking to recover the rest of what he was owed.

Staten Island Ferry to Be Converted to LNG - Dec 21, 2012 At least one Staten Island ferry will be converted to clean-burning liquefied natural gas (LNG), at which point it is expected to be the first ferry in North America to use LNG for power. The Passenger Vessel Association’s (PVA) said that the Staten Island Ferry has chosen the Association’s ‘Green WATERS’ environmental stewardship program to, among other things, oversee the conversion of an Austen Class ferryboat to LNG fuel. “The Staten Island Ferry is the nation’s largest passenger-only ferry system today and in keeping with Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC agenda, we are committed to a cleaner, more efficient ferry fleet as part of a more sustainable future for New York City,” said Staten Island Ferry Chief Operating Officer James C. DeSimone. “LNG is a key part of this approach as we transition to cleaner-burning fuels and as we build a world-class ferry system for the long term.” Page 7 of 22

DNV and GL Group Announce Landmark Merger- Dec 20, 2012. Norwegian classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and German classification society Germanischer Lloyd have agreed to merge their respective businesses in 2013. The new entity will be called DNV GL Group. If approved, this merger will be responsible for classing a combined tonnage of 265 million gross tons of ships and rigs worldwide making it the largest classification society in the world, and de-throning ClassNK from the top ranking. This merger brings a very interesting combination of expertise together. Both companies were founded in the mid-19th century with the mission to promote “Safeguarding life, property, and the environment” with respect to maritime shipping. Since then, both companies have expanded their operations and furthered their mission into other industrial sectors such as offshore oil and gas, renewables, and the power sectors.

Damen Acquires French Ship Repair Yard Arno Dunkerque - Dec 19, 2012. Damen Shipyards Group announced that it is has acquired the French ship repair yard Arno Dunkerque, the sole operator for ship repair and conversion in the 3rd largest French port, Dunkirk. Damen says it will keep the yard’s current personnel and management team to ensure a seamless transition of the yard into the Damen Shipyards Group. “We are extremely happy that a deal was achieved with Damen Shipyards Group, a company providing a worldwide network and a strong expertise in this industry, which will reinforce the position of ship repair activities in the Port of Dunkirk and will give it international coverage,” Christine Cabau Woehrel, CEO of Dunkirk Port Authority, said. “A comprehensive and continuous dialogue between the different parties involved all along the process of the takeover has led to a very positive issue ensuring employment guarantee, together with strong prospects for a growing economic activity in the Dunkirk port area and the Nord Pas de Calais Region. We are all very satisfied of this positive outcome.”

UK Maritime Industry Employs 635,000 - Dec 18, 2012 The U.K.’s ports, shipping and maritime services industries employ 635,000 people, contributing 8.45 billion pounds ($13.71 billion) in tax revenues, according to a study for Maritime U.K. Maritime businesses generated 31.73 billion pounds, equivalent to 2.1 percent of the total economy, more than the restaurant and mobile food, and the civil engineering sectors in 2011, according to the study by Oxford Economics, an Oxford, U.K.-based forecaster. ************************ Page 8 of 22

CHENIERE AWARDS BECHTEL $3.8 BILLION CONTRACT FOR SABINE PASS LNG LIQUEFACTION TRAINS Sabine Liquefaction, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cheniere Energy, announced the award of a $3.8 billion lump sum turnkey contract with Bechtel for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the third and fourth LNG liquefaction trains to be constructed adjacent to the Sabine Pass LNG terminal in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

Construction for the third and fourth trains is expected to begin in the first half of 2013. The liquefaction trains are being designed, constructed, and commissioned by Bechtel using the ConocoPhillips Optimized Cascade technology, a proven technology deployed in numerous LNG projects around the world. Nominal capacity for each train will be approximately 4.5 million tonnes per annum. The liquefaction trains will be built next to the existing facilities at the Sabine Pass LNG terminal, which include five tanks with storage capacity of 16.9 billion cubic feet equivalent (Bcfe), two docks that can handle vessels up to 265,000 cubic meters, and vaporizers with regasification capacity of 4.0 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d).

Sabine Liquefaction has entered into a sale and purchase agreement with Total Gas & Power North America, Inc. (Total), under which Total has contracted for approximately half of the expected LNG production capacity of the fifth liquefaction train and based on indications of interest expects to contract the remaining capacity in due course. KEPPEL BUYING INTO THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA Keppel Corporation, the world’s biggest oil-rig builder, may consider buying a yard in China as the nation boosts offshore drilling to meet rising energy demand.

KEPPEL TUAS YARD. Backed by over a century of experience, Keppel Shipyard is well known for the repair, conversion and upgrading of a diverse range of vessels.

Keppel, which already has one yard in China making parts for oil rigs, will seek out acquisitions if the government opens offshore projects by state-owned enterprises to foreign companies, Chief Executive Officer Choo Chiau Beng said. “If China is willing to open up its market to foreign invested yards, for example, then of course we would be interested,” Choo said. “Right now, if a Chinese state-owned company wants to build a rig, they go to one of their own yards. In Brazil, we’re given the same chance as everybody else.” Keppel is targeting emerging markets including China, West Africa and Mexico, as oil producers expand in new areas to offset waning reserves. The Singapore-based rig-builder, which operates yards in its home city as well as in the U.S., Qatar, Brazil and Indonesia, is seeking to move closer to its customers with new locations. The possible expansion in China comes as the government encourages local shipyards to move into the offshore business. The country is targeting 20 percent of the global market for rigs, production facilities and other offshore products by 2015, according to the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry. Chinese shipbuilders boosted output of offshore equipment 22 percent to 22.9 billion Yuan (US$3.7 billion) in the first 10 months, according to the shipbuilding group. New ship orders slumped 47 percent in the first 11 months to the least since 2003, according to Clarkson Plc, the world’s biggest shipbroker. Offshore Threat “Eventually, the Chinese yards will pose a threat to Keppel in the offshore business,” said Yeak Chee Keong, an analyst at Maybank Kim Eng Research Pte in Singapore, who rates Keppel a buy. “But in the short-term, customers will prefer established yards like Keppel because they know their orders will be delivered on time and on budget.” Keppel won S$9 billion (US$7.4 billion) worth of new orders this year through November 26, helping increase its order book to S$12.2 billion. The company expects to deliver a record 21 rigs next year, exceeding its previous high of 14 in 2009. The rig-maker has climbed 17 percent this year in Singapore, compared with 19 percent advances for the benchmark Straits Times Index and its biggest rival, Sembcorp Marine Ltd. Picking Battles Chinese shipyards Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Ltd. and Jinhai Heavy Industry Co. both announced their first offshore orders this month, helped by lower prices. Yangzijiang’s $170 million order for jack-up rig announced on Dec. 3 was lower than a similar order Keppel secured in April for $205 million. Lower prices are squeezing the profit margins of existing yards, including those operated by Keppel, Choo said. “We must find new ways to compete, we must find battlefields that we can win,” Choo said. “We don’t compete with the giant in every area. There’s no need to. We can choose our battlefield.” Keppel is building a second yard in Brazil as state-owned Petroleo Brasileiro SA develops the biggest oil discovery in the Americas in three decades off the country’s coast. Keppel signed a $4.1 billion order in August to build five semi-submersible rigs for Sete Brasil Participacoes SA, an affiliate of Petrobras. It also received a $950 million contract to build a floating oil production unit for Petrobras. The state oil producer is spending $236.5 billion as part of its five-year investment plan. The company has faced delays in carrying out exploration in the region and getting the rigs it needs to tap oil trapped under as much as 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) of salt and rocks below the Atlantic seabed. ************************ Page 15 of 22

QMS HOST CURRY DUCK COMPETITION On November 23, 2012 Shipbuilding & Repair Stakeholder Qualitech Machining Services Limited (QMS) hosted their first ever inter-company Curry Duck Competition. Employees who participated in this event were judged using the following criteria, which included Kitchen Wear Presentation, Taste and Food Display & Innovation. The event was a success and do look out for another undertaking in 2013!
