2021–2022 IMPACT REPORT:
UNRESTRICTED ESTATE GIFTS AND THE NAVAL ACADEMY FUND SUMMARY The United States Naval Academy relies on the philanthropic support of alumni and friends in order to fund the key initiatives that deliver the margin of excellence. While the federal government provides the funds to support the Academy’s general operations, a variety of programs would not be able to reach their potential without the support of alumni, parents and friends of USNA. Today’s midshipmen graduate into an increasingly complex environment, and appropriated funds are not always available to meet evolving curriculum initiatives aimed at preparing Naval Academy graduates to be junior officer leaders of character. Most of the unrestricted estate gifts received by the Foundation are directed to the Naval Academy Fund. Foundation donors contributed over $12.5 million dollars to the Naval Academy Fund, including estate gifts, in the fiscal year that ended 30 June 2022. For many donors, their estate gift is their ultimate gift—both as their last and their largest gift to USNA. The Naval Academy Fund is an appropriate use for these ultimate gifts—providing the Foundation and the Naval Academy the opportunity to jump-start or sustain programs within this growing curriculum. Additionally, gifts to the Naval Academy Fund support the operations of the Foundation and in turn make possible a wide variety of Academy programs, including study abroad opportunities, senior year capstone projects and experiential leadership development programs. It is this flexibility that makes the Naval Academy Fund the Superintendent’s number one priority for private gift support. To showcase the transformative impact of unrestricted Naval Academy Fund support, the Foundation worked with the Yard to install a display recognizing lifetime and annual leaders in unrestricted support. Updated each fall, this display can be seen at the ArmelLeftwich Visitor Center.
