SUMMARY The United States Naval Academy offers an environment designed for midshipmen to develop their leadership through extracurricular activities (ECAs), sports, professional organizations, and academic groups, both on and off the Yard. These activities have proven instrumental to the development of the Brigade. The Midshipman Activities Fund (MAF) is designed to provide funding for activities that would not otherwise exist at the individual, company, or Brigade level. The MAF functions in a similar manner to campus support organizations at civilian institutions, providing resources to student and recreational organizations that enhance the daily lives of the midshipmen. While most other universities have a dedicated philanthropic division focused on raising private funds in support of key initiatives such as these, the Naval Academy does not, and therefore relies on the MAF to sustain these programs. We are pleased to share highlights from the 2022-23 academic year.

MUSICAL ACTIVITIES Through the generosity of donors, USNA Musical Activities continued to grow, thrive, and refine through the 2022-2023 academic year. Midshipmen were provided exceptional experiences in a wide variety of performances which included five major concert tours across the continental U.S., including eight states and 15 cities as well as participation with the Arizona MusicFest and collaboration with the Indianapolis Symphony. These ensembles bring unprecedented exposure to the Naval Academy, including viewership of approximately one million people in person; three million through online videos and social media; and eight million on television through two nationally televised appearances at NFL games (Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders) as well as the Drum & Bugle Corps and Pipes & Drums appearances at the Patriot Day parade in Boston, MA, and Tartan Day parade in New York City, respectively. This year resulted in the creation of two new midshipmen music ensembles, the USNA Steel Drum Band and the Mariachi Marineros, as well as the implementation of a new marching style for the Drum & Bugle Corps. In total, USNA Musical Activities supported 65 formal concerts, with record numbers attending the annual Halloween concerts, the 75th anniversary and filming of the annual Handel’s Messiah, and the winter musical Into the Woods. USNA’s music programs serve as a much-needed outlet for our midshipmen participants, who rely on the opportunities for creative and artistic expression and develop command presence and confidence through teamwork and attention to detail.
