Key to rug comfort is getting the correct size. Measure from the centre of your horse’s chest to the buttocks where you would expect the rug to finish. Fitting a rug

• Fasten the breast straps so that the fabric overlaps underneath them. The straps should be tight enough to hold the rug in place, but not so tight that the rug’s shape distorts. This could cause pressure points around the chest and wither area.

• Cross surcingles when fastened should allow a hand’s width between them and the horse’s tummy to ensure legs cannot get caught should the horse lie down, but not so tight to make the horse uncomfortable.

• Leg straps should be fastened left strap around the left hind leg, fastening back to the left side. The right strap then passes around the right hind leg, looping through the left strap and fastening back to the right side. There should be about 4-5” between the strap and the horse’s legs to prevent the rug slipping but without causing the horse any discomfort.

• If the rug has a fillet string or strap instead of leg straps, loop this under the tail and attach so that it secures the back of the rug to help hold it in place.

• Ensure the rug fits well over the withers and shoulders. Too loose and it will slip back when the horse moves, too tight and it may rub your horse.

Bits and Bitting Bit of an Issue? A Bit of Help... Bitting can be a confusing and bemusing subject and opinions and ideas will always vary. The bit and bridle are tools used by the rider to communicate with the horse. A clear understanding of the bitting pressure points, how the different families of bitting use these and the resulting likely reaction by the horse can greatly benefit the rider. However it is the signals the rider gives the horse through their seat, legs and the reins that will ultimately define how strong or severe a bit is, not just its design.

If in doubt it is recommended the rider seek the advice of their instructor when looking for the most suitable bit for themselves and their horse.

The Families of Bitting There are many different designs of bit but they can almost all be placed into one of six families of bitting, each defined by how the mechanics (action) of the bit works, the pressure points that it uses and the probable reaction of the horse. In this way a logical process can be followed when selecting a bit for your horse. Remember that your horse’s conformation, age, stage of training, work, stable management and your ability as a rider are all contributing factors to correct bit selection.

Commonly refered to incorrectly as a "gag" or elevator. These bits have a point of rein attachment that is below the mouthpiece, creating a leverage action. Mouthpieces Generally a thin or uneven mouthpiece is stronger than a broad larger or smoother one. Finding a bit that is best suited to your horse’s individual mouth shape is the linchpin to successful bitting. Some horses with a “full” mouth may be more comfortably bitted with a finer mouthpiece. A single, central joint gives a squeezing action to the tongue and bars, double joints (plate and lozenge) disperse the contact across the mouth to lighten the pressure applied to the edge of the tongue, but be aware of the angle of the plate (e.g. French link) or lozenge as this can change the way it acts on the tongue and bars. A curved mouthpiece allows more room for the tongue in the same way that a low port can, but a high port (curb or Pelham leverage bit) can tilt forward and place pressure on the horse’s palate, so can be very strong and are not generally recommended. The same mouthpiece designs can be found across the various families of bitting.

It is not just the mouthpiece that changes size for a smaller or larger bit, the ring and cheek* size can vary according to the mouthpiece size too. These sizes are indicated as measurements A or B at the end of the bit descriptions which correspond to the diagram above. * where the bit has cheeks, e.g. hanging cheeks or Pelham, the measurement given is for the cheek rather than the ring. For the correct height a straight bar bit should sit neatly into the corners of the mouth and a jointed one just high enough to create gentle wrinkles.

To measure your horse for a bit: 1. It is important that a bit is the correct width. Too wide will cause bruising and trauma, too narrow and it will pinch. For the correct mouthpiece width there should be 1/4 inch (5mm) clear on both sides. An index finger placed each side is a good measure of the appropriate width. 2. With the bit at the correct height, place a gentle contact on both reins and then look from the front to judge the protruding mouthpiece width. For safety’s sake, keep your face to one side in case he suddenly lifts his head up. With a loose ring bit, take the measurement from the inside of the whole through which the ring passes. Seek professional advice if you are unsure.

Routine Mouth Care Make it part of your horse’s stable management routine to have his teeth checked regularly by a good Equine Dental Technician or Vet. Ask them to show you how to part your horse’s lips and look at his mouth and bars after active work as this will enable you to be aware of bitting problems before they become issues. N.B. do not put your fingers inside your horse’s mouth!

Routine Bit Care For a long life and your horse’s welfare, wash the bit after every use, checking its condition and dry it with a clean towel. Store in a dry environment. Keep a close eye on your bridle and look out for stitching, loops, clips or buckles that may be in need of repair.

Stable Enrichment In their natural environment, horses and ponies spend a significant part of their day foraging for food. When stabled, the time spent feeding is greatly reduced since the need to search out food is removed. Without foraging material, horses may direct their attention towards bedding or surfaces. They can also display habits such as crib-biting, wind-sucking, hair eating and wood chewing/licking. Horses on box rest or restricted diets can adopt these unwanted habits too.

Increasing forage time can help discourage bad habits.
