My chosen object is a folding step ladder. I use two main methods to do the measurement. It is hard to measure it directly due to the object has rigid appearance and bended edge. Therefore, photocopying the object firstly and then using tracing paper to draw the details. The scale of my measured drawing is 1:2. I use a ruler to measure the width and height of the object. When taking photos of the object, put it on the flat ground and keep the camera and the center of the object on the same level. Adjusting the scale of the picture to 1:2 by Photoshop after photocopying the object. Then, tracing the exact details onto an A3 paper. All of the drawings, the plan, elevation and section are created by the combination of these methods.

Analysis

7.7cm

1.3cm There are circular design array on the surface of the seat. They are made by rubber which in order to increase the friction between human and seat. Moreover, rubber is also used under the leg of the seat, so that it is hard to move instead of other materials. Introducing rubber could be more secure and stable.

A hand-held design is placed on the top of the seat. After the seat folded, the handle becomes vertical and easy to carry. The shape of the handle seems like wave which fit in the form of crooking the fingers.

Rotated joints are used on the side of the seat, which allow the seat could be folded. Thus, it saves more space to place and easy to carry. The material is plastic so that it is portable.

Two raised sections are created to support the surface of the seat, which make the folded seats more stable.

The hollow grid structure is light weight instead of a thick structure. It is is used to provided more strength and allows the whole structure supportable.

Digital Model

ISOMETRIC VIEW 6

Modeling method:

- Scale the bitmap of the object and draw the main outline - Use planer surface, create plane from lines - Use extrude curve, create solid from surface - For the edge of the object, use fillet to make it more smooth - For the side of the folded seat, there are unconnected hollow cylinder and a center axis. Firstly, creating a cuboid and array a row of it along the side, use boolean difference to get the hollow. And then creating the tube and center cylinder. - The interior grid is a boolean union of an extruded rectangle and grid line. - During the digital model making proocess, use moving commands and gumball tools from different views to make sure different sections are in the correct position. - The folded seats are symmetrical hence use mirror tools to create the same section.

Sketch Model The folded design could save space to store and easy to move. Moreover, the hinge joints also play a significant role in achieving the folding motion successfully. Hence, for the new sketch model, I create several holes along the side of the irregular cardboard, and intruducing ropes to connect the adjacent ones. Therefore, the cardboard could move and fold in any directions to create a new space.

Introducing ropes allow the model could be stretched to flat and seperate sections can be compressed together, which being foldable and portable. When the cardboard folding centrally, the adjacent pieces might go different directions oppositely. Thus a geometric space is created and the cardboard could be imagined as the outer walls or shelters of an inner space.

Sketch Model

From the orignal object, it can be found that the foldable mechainism to which it can be folded in differen directions and the whole structure changed. There are fixed point on the ground as the two white triangular cardboard shows, while the above structure could changed to any shapes, either concave or convex.

Sketch Design #1 ROUNDING - SUPPORTING - BLOOMING - TANGRAM

Extract pieces from the original model and combine them together, which looks like a tangram. The design could be viewed as a scarf or a neck support.

How does this respond to your personal space? It has the shape of tangram, which is a combination of seperate geometrical pieces. Acting automatically according to the interior comfort level or exterior obstructive influences. The material could be cotton or fabric and the system could be folded, when the people turning around or bow the head, it could adjust accordingly.

Sketch Design #2 SENSITIVE - BARRIER - CHANGEABLE - GROWABLE - WEARABLE

Grab the unflat rubber circular part from the seats

How does this respond to your personal space?

The rough surface of the design could becomes sharp when there are external attack, it grows exponentially and spread out like blooming on human body.

The friction coeffcient increase as the attack coeffcient rising. And the shape of it growing with the disturbed body.

Sketch Design #3 CROSSED - PHOTOMETRIC - AFLUTTER - CONCENTRAD

The grid is extract from the internal folded seats.

How does this respond to your personal space?

This webbed head design is used as a lightproof shield, which emerging on people's head according to the level of exposure under the light. [Maximum 25 words]
