WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types are cylinders, cones and tangent surfaces of space curves. Cylinders' surfaces, which are called prismatic surfaces, are formed by several parallel lines. The rulings of the surfaces are also parallel and the right angle between normal sections can also be seen in the development. Cones are consist of a profile curve p and a vertex point v and all the points on p are connecting v. Tangent surfaces are formed by connecting vertical lines of a polygon.
Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) As Helmut says, developable surfaces are special ruled surfaces. For each ruling, there is a plane tangent to the surface along the entire ruling, which composite more general developable surfaces. As can be seen in the blended Greenhouse in the hillside, designed by Plasma Studio, its horseshoe plan creates a loop that changes in developable triangle shapes to accommodate different planting and landform conditions. This building of developable surfaces also creates an interior outdoor courtyard and a natural exterior circulation.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:
Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication is an architecture and material techniques documents architectrually innovate projects realized through digital design and construction process. It helps create a ‘hypothetically seamless connection’ between representation and building. As Lisa said,’ one form of two-dimensional representation replaced another’, it makes two dimensional represention become editable and easier to see from different corners effectively and efficiently.
Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) 1. Folding makes a two-dimensional shape become a three-dimensional model, and it creates stiffness and rigidity. 2. Also, it can be self- supporting, whcih is easier to be understood visually.
