Brown, your journey began in very humble circumstances, being born in an abandoned building, later adopted and eventually labeled mentally retarded. Mr. Brown, it is obvious that resilience and determination have played a major part in your success as a public speaker, can you describe the “ah hah” moment that you knew you were marked for greatness?
I’ve always looked up to my adoptive mother, Mrs. Mimi Brown, who took on the incredible responsibility of raising seven children she didn’t give birth to. Watching her answer that call in life deeply inspired me. She made such a profound difference in my life and my siblings’ lives that it sparked a desire in me to do the same for others. The scripture says, ‘Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness – right thinking, right words, right calling, and right relationships – shall be filled.’ This scripture resonated with me and ignited a hunger within me to make a difference: first, by making my mother proud; second, by buying her a home; and third, by providing for her as she grew older, just as she had provided for me and my siblings. That has been a driving force in my life, influencing everything I do. I encourage others to find something that sparks that same passion in them—a relentless sense of purpose that gives their life meaning and direction. When you tap into that, you’ll unlock the greatness within you, and allow God’s presence and gifts to shine through in every area of your life.”

Brown, you’ve been a powerful voice in the motivational speaking world for over five decades. So how has your message evolved over the years to continue to motivate the masses?
’m glad you asked that question. The first step in addressing it is nurturing a hunger within yourself to make a difference in the life of someone you love. For me, that person was my mother, and that desire expanded to shape the direction I wanted for my own life. Dr. Howard Thurman said there are two important questions to ask yourself: 1) Where am I going? and 2) Who’s going with me? If you ask them in the wrong order, you’ll face serious trouble. I aligned myself with people who knew more than
me, people I could learn from and grow with. I’ve always taught others to build relationships with what I call ‘OQP’—Only Quality People. A Harvard study followed people for 78 years and found that what separates the top 1% from the rest is their ‘reference group’—a circle of people who push them to a higher standard, hold them accountable, and bring out the best in each other.
Creating a community of like-minded, purpose-driven people is key. But we’re now in what Peter Drucker called ‘the era of the three Cs’—accelerated change, overwhelming complexity, and tremendous competition. Drucker said that we must ‘unlearn, learn, and relearn.’ Many people fail because they try to open new doors with old keys.
To succeed, you not only need a clear sense of purpose and direction, but you also need to constantly evolve and enhance your skills—especially in mastering technology. AI is transforming every industry, and over 325 million jobs will be eliminated because of it. We must stay mentally, emotionally, and spiritually strong, viewing challenges as opportunities for growth. As the scripture says, ‘All things work together for good, for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.’”
Mr.Brown, in Columbus, you made a significant mark in politics, becoming a representative in the Ohio State Legislature and passing record legislation as a freshman. How did your time in politics help shape your perspective on leadership and community service?
olitics has shown me how it plays a vital role in shaping the lives of ourselves, our families, and our communities. We must remain continuously engaged in the political process because every time we make a purchase and pay taxes, we’re funding the salaries of those who create legislation. That legislation can either restrict our advancement or open doors for new opportunities, helping us achieve the American dream.
Politics also revealed that both politics and religion have systems of thought designed to control people. These systems often keep individuals divided, fostering an ‘us versus them’ mentality. Instead of building a culture based on love, peace, and harmony, where people come together, these systems frequently create conflict. We need to shift our focus from turning against each other to turning towards each other, fostering unity and mutual support.”
What helped me break into politics without experience or resources is the power of storytelling. In politics, there are four key stories: the story you tell about yourself and your values, the story you tell about your opponent and what they stand for, the story they tell about you in opposition to your position, and the story they tell about themselves and why they should be chosen. These stories shape culture, and I’ve learned that anyone can answer the call to create change.
I believe we’re at a time when God is calling ordinary people to do extraordinary things and create a new culture. The way people operate within a culture and its belief systems influences how they show up in life. We’re living in a very tense time—whether it’s school drills for potential shooters, uncertainty in public gatherings, or everyday conflicts escalating into violence. People are on edge, and it’s up to ordinary people to shape a culture of peace and positive behavior.
To do this, we must stay committed and relentless in promoting peace, even in the face of setbacks and distractions. The Bible says, ‘I will keep you in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on me.’ We have to rise above negativity, surround ourselves with those who align spiritually
and mentally, and find joy in the process of life—even through pain. Turning pain into purpose and love is key, because God is love There’s an old song that’s still relevant today: ‘What the world needs now is love, sweet love.’ When we operate from a place of love, peace, and purpose, I believe we can all answer the call to leave the world better than we found it.”

Mr. Brown, your career spans public service, radio broadcasting, and motivational speaking. What advice do you have for individuals looking to reinvent themselves or switch career paths, as you’ve done successfully multiple times?
Find something that truly resonates with your heart, because where your heart is, there your treasure lies. Once you identify that passion, make the decision to go after it with determination. Pursue it fully, and live your life on your own terms, the way you truly want to live.

When you speak, speak from a place of genuine understanding, where you truly know what you’re talking about. People say, ‘Practice what you preach, but I say, ‘preach what you practice.’ When you speak from experience, you connect with others on a deeper level. Remember, people don’t just buy from you—they buy into you. This will allow them to begin to break free from the limiting stories they’ve told themselves that they can’t achieve a different kind of life and to start living in the realm of possibility. The scripture says, “I’ll give you all your eyes can see,” so speak from your heart so that people don’t just hear you, but that they feel you. Create an experience that encourages people to move beyond their past and live out of their imagination. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Melanie Bonita started being a very determined person at a young age. She overcame many adversities that she faced in her life. Raymond McAllister, Jr is a native of Durham, NC. A graduate of Hillside High School and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, he holds a degree in Business Administration. Having worked in several fields, his most recent one was Healthcare at the largest healthcare organization in the state of North Carolina. In this role, he conducted insurance meetings for clients who had 2,500 or more employees in and outside of North Carolina. Also in his role was conflict resolution.
