Perrault inaugurates tallest building in Austria

Lane Crawford opens homeware store at IFC mall Lane Crawford, Hong Kong’s iconic luxury department store, has opened a new 6,873 sq-ft homeware store at IFC mall, designed by Yabu Pushelberg as a large apartment, along with a 480 sq-ft courtyard where designer collections and new products are also showcased.

‘States and Conditions, Hong Kong’ animates the entire architecture of the White Cube Hong Kong gallery with sculptures by British artist Anthony Gormley, activating the built environment with a particular resonance to the dense urban conditions particular to Hong Kong. “What excites me about this city is that yes, it’s a high density town, but there are very few places in the world where there is a relationship between mountains and sea that is mediated by a city,” Gormley told Perspective. “Here in Hong Kong, you have a high-density, high-rise city whose downtown area has this strong relationship with nature and the untouched elemental world. Hong Kong allows us to think about the human habitat in relation to the wider biosphere.” Obstructing the main entrance from the street, Ease (2012) suggests an awkward occupation of the gallery architecture and 80 | perspective

encourages an awareness of our position in space and time. “All my life I have attempted to reconcile consciousness and deep space. In ‘States and Conditions, Hong Kong’, I have contrasted two ways of doing this: Form (2013), a condensed iron mass made by applying the constructional rules of architecture to the body, and Murmur (2014), an expanding nest of space-frames that extend the previous work, Form, so that it only just fits in the room,” Gormley explained. “In contrast, I am aware of how much of our lives we relate to surfaces, to appearance, to the defining edges of our world, whether walls or horizons. I am always asking: is this limit surmountable? Is there a possibility of imagining an ultimate freedom? Sculpture can be a material catalyst for extending our thoughts and feelings beyond the limitations of a palpable or perceivable world.” The exhibition is on view till 3 May.

Archaeology meets architecture at V by Crown

Island School design competition winners revealed

V by Crown, an A$309 million, 29-storey residential apartment building by Allen Jack + Cottier Architects and located in Sydney’s Parramatta district, will both preserve and honour recently discovered archeological remains integral to the area’s historical and cultural past. An 1840s house, underlying convict hut, wheelwright’s workshop and the cellar of the Wheatsheaf Hotel will all be preserved in situ, sheltered by a distinctive canopy. Artefacts recovered from the archaeological excavation will be displayed in an interpretation centre, so that the general public can share in the historical development of Parramatta City.

Danish Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and Hong Kong-based Thomas Chow Architects have been appointed to design the new Island School in Hong Kong. The brief for the 28,000 sq-m new building is a sustainable learning landscape with state-of-the-art facilities to support optimal learning conditions for the school’s students. The new school will be placed on the site of the existing school, which was built in 1967. The site has a clear visual connection to the green mountain landscape and the Hong Kong city skyline and waterfront. 丹麥Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects與香港周德年建築設計有限公司獲委設計 香港的港島中學。

DC Tower 1, Austria’s tallest building, has been unveiled, designed by architect Dominique Perrault to function as two pieces of a gigantic monolith and an arch created with undulating and shimmering façades. “Visual qualities of the folded façade create a new way to read the skyline of Donau City, its undulations signalling the entry point of this new polarity,” noted Perrault. “For interior spaces, on the other hand, with Gaëlle LauriotPrévost, the associate designer, we have tried to make the building very physical and present.”

Vattanac Tower on schedule for completion

建築的設計靈感源自戰後的建築風格。戰後初 期,旺角有不少住宅單位都加築了非法的鐵造露台, 而Aedas則重新詮釋這類建築,採用不規則的外牆設 計,為每間公寓創造無阻的極致景觀。 Aedas亦受家居陽台的設計啟發,在建築看似起 伏的表面鋪設綠牆,進一步連繫城市的歷史景觀,同 時增加行人區的綠意,提升生活質素。

The 188m-high, 39-storey Vattanac Capital Tower One in Phnom Penh is on track for completion later this year. Prominently located in the heart of the capital’s central business district along Preah Monivong Boulevard, this world-class commercial complex will also include Grade-A offices and Cambodia’s first luxury retail mall. Designed by architects TFP Farrells as an iconic landmark with a strong Cambodian identity, the nation’s first high-rise utilises the firm’s extensive knowledge and experience of ‘place-making’ to create a visionary project and an internationally unique cultural presence for Phnom Penh. Clarification: the image which appeared in the March issue of Perspective was incorrectly credited to Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, which will occupy the top 14 floors of the tower. Aedas scores 初探未來 MIPIM ‘Future Project’ commendation The Aedas-designed Mongkok Residence in Hong Kong has received a high commendation at 2014 MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards in the residential category. With a population density of 130,000 people per square kilometre, Mongkok is one of the most densely populated places on the planet. Standing on a site of just 614 sq-m, Aedas designed a building that will offer serviced apartment accommodation and set an example of contemporary interpretation of traditional architecture. The design of the building drew inspirations from post-war structures. In the early post-war years, it was common to create illegal iron balconies for residential units in Mongkok to acquire maximum view. Aedas reinterpreted these structures in a modern way, using irregular protrusions to create

Kaisin monograph at Eslite HK Following his solo exhibition as part of last year’s BODW Belgian Spirit theme, a new monograph on the works of Belgian architect and designer Charles Kaisin has been released, available from Eslite. Kaisin participated in a creative exchange with Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and IVE students, and HKDI principal Lesley Lu expressed hope that the architect’s creations would spark greater interest in the environment and renewable materials among the public. Currently on show at the HKDI is George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher, an exhibition co-organised with Vitra Design Museum and sponsored by Herman Miller.

Now in their 13th year, the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards are the only awards exclusively for future projects. With a strong focus on creativity, these awards showcase projects that are examples of fine architecture, but have also responded to the client’s development brief, and considered the way in which they will impact and contribute to the community around them.

MAY SET TO BE BUMPER ART MONTH IN HK

Sicis opens Beijing showroom Italian tile and mosaic specialist Sicis has signed an agreement with a distributor for the Beijing market, Di Lusso Gaopin (Beijing), to launch Design Sicis, a 600 sq-m showroom situated on the third floor of a building in the heart of Beijing. Celebrating the union between Italian mosaics and Chinese decorative art, the space was realised in partnership with Studio Marco Piva. The first exhibition area recreates the noble and refined mood of an elegant home, while the second floor is made up of libraries of mosaics in marble, glass and other materials.

Hong Kong will stage two major art shows next month — Art Basel 2014 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the Asia Contemporary Art Show at the Conrad Hotel. The latter will see 100 participating galleries from 18 countries bringing together some 3,000 pieces of work. “The show is 25 per cent larger than last year’s, and was sold out five months in advance,” said Mark Saunderson, director of the Asia Contemporary Art Show.

Liang Yi Museum celebrates Hollywood Road heritage

Ritz-Carlton Kyoto pays homage to Japan’s cultural heart Co-presented with Japanese property developer Sekisui House, the newlyopened Ritz-Carlton Kyoto retains the aesthetics of a traditional Meiji house and courtyard in the architectural structure of the building. Located on the banks of the Kamogawa River in Nijho Ohashi, the hotel’s luxury guestrooms and suites offer full views of the river and the Higashiyama Mountains, their interiors — by Peter Remedios and Spin Studios — paying homage to the traditions of Japan. This is expressed in patterned motifs created by local artisans, and the incorporation of Zen rock gardens (karesansui) and water features, including a four-storey waterfall apositioned in the heart of the hotel. The Kamogawa Suite and its sister suites with their moon deck gardens (tsukimidai) and floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views of the river and mountains. Meanwhile, Italian restaurant La Locanda pays homage to the hotel site’s history with a private room, Ebisugawatei, sited in a preserved historically-listed building

The new Liang Yi Museum has opened its doors on Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road, whose defining character faces looming displacement by F&B establishments and rising rents. The museum, located in a refurbished 1960s tenement building with a black and white tiled façade typical of the era, stands as one of the few remaining markers of Hollywood Road’s past as the art and antiquing hub of the city. Make completes first residential building in HK Targeting a BEAM Plus Platinum rating, the 23-storey Dunbar Place in Kowloon — by Make Architects for Swire Properties — uses recyclable aluminium building material, and limits the use of glass to reduce energy consumption. Make has incorporated green landscape design to more than 30 per cent of the site area to maximise biodiversity, with the use of green roofs on the clubhouse and building, and a vertical garden at the carpark entrance. “Our concept was to create and implement an innovative design with a striking visual appeal that is also environmentally responsible,” said John Puttick, partner and lead architect for Make in China.

the aim of all creative tasks. A calm, considered approach is necessary. And for all planners, be they for events or roads or buildings, those simple aphorisms quoted when a child are most useful: “many a ‘twix (mistake) between the cup and the lip” and “a stitch in time saves nine”. Experience enforces this and good planners of any discipline will pass this onto their younger colleagues. In Canada, a graduating engineer receives a finger ring made from the steel used in a engineering disaster — it is a simple reminder not to rush, to check and then check — again. 我終於在晚上有空閒的時間了。經過緊湊的10個星期 籌備,香港ArtWalk現已完滿結束,讓所有參加者都樂 在其中。忙亂的時光總算過去了。

Creativity is not simple, but simplicity is the aim of all creative tasks — as anyone who’s undertaken the planning of a major event like Hong Kong Art Walk well knows 創作從來不是簡單的事情,但每位創作人都明白一切從簡的 道理;而所有曾經籌辦香港Art Walk的人,更加深明此道

坦白說,如此長時間地工作,加上偶爾創作和 (時常)解決難題等負擔,確實十分累人。所有令人 期待的憧憬,都幾乎被繁重的工作耗掉了。事情紛紛 接踵而至,彷彿永無止境。然而,活動策劃其實就如 (或說應像)動工興建一幢建築一樣,一切理應循序 漸進,按部就班。 在我倡導古蹟保育和改善城市規劃期間,我發現 建築師、工程師及發展商等主理大型基建項目者,其 實全都非常務實和謹慎。

I have my nights back again. After an intense 10 weeks, the event I have been organising — Hong Kong ArtWalk — has been held and enjoyed by everyone who attended. This busy period is over. The long hours of pragmatic, sometimes creative and (more often) problem-solving energy are, let’s truthfully admit, draining. Any initial adrenaline rush of anticipation is worndown by the actual work. And, it can appear to be never-ending. There is task after task. But, all is sequential, there is order and a time-line to event planning, as there is — or should be — in the building of any physical structure. In our campaigns for heritage preservation and better urban planning, I have invariably

found the people who build large infrastructure projects — architects, engineers and builders — wonderfully pragmatic and careful. As much as I despise our road and highway planning for unnecessary intrusion into quiet residential areas (visit Tseung Kwan O!), I admire the approach to traffic management issues and the inventive use of scarce road space to allow traffic to creatively move between road lanes to and between difficult points of access and egress. Only those who have planned an event or built something know the effort and long hours required to achieve a good, and in construction projects, safe result. Creativity is not simple, but simplicity is
