Welcome to the 38th annual WOBM Christmas Classic, presented by Jersey Mike’s and hosted by Townsquare Media, the Shore Sports Network and the Toms River Regional School District. Once again, 32 varsity basketball teams (16 boys/16 girls) will be participating and playing 48 games over five days at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena. The tournament was established in 1984 as a replacement for the Southern Regional Roundball Festival and began with eight boys teams playing over three days at Ocean County College. The girls division was added in 1994 and the tournament moved to the campus of Toms River High School North in 2003. Today, the WOBM Christmas Classic is one of the largest holiday basketball tournaments in New Jersey. Special thanks to the Toms River School District and Board of Education for hosting the event and providing such an outstanding facility for the participants.

As he does each year Tournament Founder/Director Kevin Williams served as Master of Ceremonies and host of the morning event and spent several minutes thanking the near two dozen sponsors who help make the event possible. Topping that list is Jersey Mike’s the presenting sponsor of this year’s tournament and a major supporter of the Shore Sports Network.

As they have since the WOBM Classic started in 1984 the Causeway Family of Dealerships in Manahawkin is once again a big part by providing tee-shirts for all the players and sponsoring the Most Valuable Player awards. Those awards will be created by Ocean Trophies of Lanoka Harbor who will continue the tradition of donating the team championship awards to the boys and girls bracket champions. Those winners will also receive special long-sleeve shirts courtesy of Atlantic Physical Therapy Center , another longtime sponsor. Both Mike and Dave Manzo played in the WOBM during their days at what was then Monsignor Donovan High School and have always given back in a variety of ways.

Welcoming the players and coaches to this year’s tournament was Neil Bryant, Vice President of Operations at Community Medical Center/RWJBarnabas Health. CMC has been a huge supporter of the tournament and has provided funding for academic scholarships in recent years. At the breakfast Williams announced the eight winners of the $500 awards who will be publically recognized on the final day (December 30). They are

Of course the entire 48-game event will be held at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena on the campus of Toms River High School North. Also welcoming the 32 teams was Michael Citta, the Superintendent of the Toms River Regional School District who have graciously hosted the tournament since 2003.

The field of 32 teams for the WOBM Classic is similar to what it’s been in recent years but there are some fresh faces in the girls division as Point Pleasant Boro and Lacey replace Marlboro and Colts Neck.

Seaview Orthopaedics is back as the official team doctors of the Classic and they also provide the Athletic Trainers who work the event. That group is made up of Kendall Culver (TR North), Dan Crashewsky (TR South), Jake McCartney (TR East) and Stacy White (Middletown South) who spoke to the players about safety protocols for care during the tournament.

The WOBM Christmas Classic welcomes a new sponsor in the U.S. Marines who were represented at the breakfast by SSgt James Guillory, SSgt Richard Jackman and SSgt Stephen Davis. The Marines will be on site during the tournament and happy to answer any questions about educational and career opportunities.

Williams once again explained that in today’s economy you could not run an event like the WOBM Christmas Classic without significant support from sponsors. In addition to the ones named he thanked the Office Lounge in Toms River who hosted the Coaches Seeding Breakfast on December 11, Surf Taco who is sponsoring the players/coaches lanyards, Wendy’s this year’s awards sponsor and RKE Athletic for producing any/all clothing. Others who contribute include:

Wallach’s Farm Market & Deli

Klee’s Bar & Grill

format this year which splits the 16-team boys and girls field into two 8-team brackets saw Manasquan and Jackson Memorial earn top seeds on the boys side while defending champion Red Bank Catholic and Ewing top the girls brackets.

BOYS

Manasquan and Jackson both return four starters from last season. The Warriors (25-6) feature Darius Adams, Alex Konov, Griffin Linstra & Ryan Frauenheim who won the Chuck Kearney Award in last year’s tournament. As for the Jaguars (20-8) they are led by seniors Samir Padilla, Keith Adame, Respect Tyleek and Charlie Meglio. Other teams to watch include St. John Vianney, Freehold Township, Central and Toms River North.

GIRLS

The girls field is loaded with several teams who figure to be among the Shore’s best. Defending champion Red Bank Catholic (23-5) lost a pair of Division-1 players but brings back seniors Emma Carman, Casey Prior and Molly Kelly along with sophomores Christina Liggio and Tessa Carman. Ewing is loaded and went 25-2 last year after having to pull out of the WOBM CC due to Covid. Juniors Rhian Stokes, Te’Yala Delfosse, Joi Johnson & Shawnae Biggs head up a very talented group. Manasquan, Rumson, Wall & Toms River North will provide the main competition.

Since the WOBM Christmas Classic was established in 1984 we have awarded scholarships to participants based on their performance in the classroom. The inaugural recipient was Southern Regional’s John Klimkiewicz who has gone on to become a highly-regarded orthopedic surgeon and has served as the head team physician for the Georgetown Hoyas and the NHL’s Washington Capitals.

The way the program works is schools are eligible to nominate their top graduating senior player following graduation. We then sort through the nominations, make sure the student is a full-time college student and select four males and four females. Each is them invited to attending the final games on December 30 and receive a $500 scholarship which is provided by Community

The 2021 Recipients:

Kelly GoodallToms River East/Rutgers University

Kolby McGowanManasquan/Brookdale CC-NJ Stars Program

Lauren LaceyWall/Florida State University

Chloe SeluchinsToms River South/Stevenson University

Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health. Officials of the hospital make the presentations to these outstanding academic achievers. Unfortunately in 2020 there was no tournament due to the pandemic so the program was on hiatus for a year. The good news is we returned to the court last December and Community Medical Center was happy to partner with us once again to continue what’s become an important part of the Christmas Classic.

So on Friday, December 30 at halftime of the 5:30 (girls) and 7:30 (boys) bracket finals we will honor:

Ryan BakerToms River North/Villanova University

Ryan KeeganFreehold Township/Rutgers-Honors College

Liam ThomasSaint John Vianney/Boston College

Vasu RavalMarlboro/Villanova University

The $4000 we are awarding this year brings our total to $99,000 in scholarships through the WOBM Christmas Classic.
