Harmon passed away at 63 years old on Oct. 25, 2009,

During his 36 years at Rumson-Fair Haven High
School, Harmon was a health and physical education

“It’s been humbling in a way,’’ Matt Harmon said. “We

Shore Conference Shines at State All-Star Games
By Scott Stump – Managing Editor
Whether it was wowing the crowd, bringing energy to the game, or piling up points, the five-man contingent from the Shore Conference made its presence felt on a state-wide level in Sunday's New Jersey Scholastic Basketball Coaches Senior All-Star Classic at Rider University. In the South's 148-128 win over the North, Wagner-bound Raritan forward Mike Aaman led the way for the local players with 19 points, Asbury Park guard Armond Conover had 16, Dartmouthbound Jackson Memorial forward Brandon McDonnell had 13, Middletown North guard Jason Huelbig had six points and Conover's twin brother, Amir, chipped in with four points along with some great passes. Armond Conover also won the halftime dunk contest, throwing one down off the bounce in the finals to edge Teaneck's Chris Jones, who is committed to Pittsburgh. Bucknell recruit Dominic Hoffman of Gill St. Bernard's won the most valuable player award with 21 points in the
South's victory, and Trenton Catholic's Brandon Taylor, a Penn State recruit, added 20 points. Jones had a game-high 23 points in the loss for the North. Linden guard Shakir Phelps added 22 points, and Hofstra recruit Dallas Anglin, a Seton Hall Prep guard, had 16 points. The Conovers brought the most energy and enthusiasm to the day to draw some of the biggest cheers on a court packed with talent, showing the small-school players from Group I Asbury Park can be as good as anyone from the parochial and large public school powers. They said they are currently looking at some junior colleges as far as their playing careers are concerned, and could go to play football.
"It definitely means a lot coming from a little school,'' Armond Conover said. "A lot of people say we can't play with the kids from the bigger Group schools and as competitors you just want to show everybody that no matter who you put on the
court with us, we're going to play to our full ability. A lot of people say they like how we play and that we bring excitement to the game, so that's what we try to do every time we step on the court.''
"We like to entertain,'' Amir Conover said. "We just come out here and have fun, all smiles. We just relish the moment.''
The game was also a chance for players to get to know one another after competing on the court during the season. Huelbig, who participated in the 3-point shooting contest at halftime that was

won by Gill St. Bernard's point guard Alex Mitola, made some friends and nearly brought the house down with a monster dunk before being fouled. "I had never met the Conovers, and now I'm friends with them,'' said Huelbig, who will continue his career at Assumption College. "It's a fun experience. Just to get here is an honor.''
For the 6-9 Aaman, who is Huelbig's AAU teammate, the game was a welcome respite during a time when his future plans may be up in the air. Numerous outlets have reported that Wagner coach Dan Hurley has interviewed for the vacant head coaching job at the University of Rhode Island. Aaman nearly went to play for Hurley at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark before choosing to attend Raritan, and has had his mind set on playing for Hurley at Wagner, which may now be in doubt.
"I'm just letting it play out,'' Aaman said. "I'm not trying to call him because I know he has a lot of stress on himself, and I don't want to make more stress by asking him what he's going to do. I think he should do what's best for him and his family.'' Aaman said that he will meet with Raritan coach Denis Caruano and formulate a plan if Hurley does leave. Should that happen, his future

destination may change.
"If he's not there, the odds of me staying at Wagner probably are slim,'' Aaman said. "I'll see who they get as a coach and then take it from there.''
McDonnell reached his decision last week and will be a future teammate of Mitola's at Dartmouth. The 6-8 forward showed off his deep shooting range with three 3-pointers in the South's win. He also participated in the halftime 3-point shooting contest. "It was good to come out here and have a little fun after all the intensity of the season,'' McDonnell said. "I had a great time.’’
The Shore Conference was also represented in the girls all-star game, which followed the boys game. St. Rose’s Samantha Clark and Kasey Chambers, Jackson Memorial’s Tiffany Montagne and Manalapan’s Jasmine McCall were all part of the South team that lost 110-105 to the North.
McCall, who is headed to Seton Hall, led the local contingent with 15 points, Montagne added 12 and Clark, who is bound for Fordham University, chipped in with eight points. Chambers, a Monmouth University recruit, was in attendance but did not play due to an injury. Brittney Sykes of University High School in Newark was the game’s most valuable player with 18 points for the North. Hamilton West’s Alexis Johnson was the game’s high scorer with 22 points. Mountain Lakes’ Katie Reese won the halftime 3-point contest, which Clark and McCall also participated in.

championships. However, next year may be their sternest test of that run given that Asbury Park will essentially have an entirely new and inexperienced team. "It's all about tradition,'' senior Armond Conover said. "If the underclassmen paid attention to us, we stayed focused and concentrated on togetherness. If they play together as a unit and as a family, they'll be all right.''
W
The senior-laden Blue Bishops went out on their terms.
It may have closed the book on a golden age of Asbury Park athletics until the young talent in the pipeline can jumpstart the next one.
"Something special did end,'' said senior guard Thomond Hammary. "They're going to have a lot of work to do next year and the years to come.'' During the four years of high school for Asbury Park's seniors, the Blue Bishops have won four Central Jersey Group I titles and two straight overall Group I championships. That's in addition to three Central Jersey Group I football titles in the last four years featuring many of the same players.
The Group I team in the Tournament of Champions has only won three games since the TOC's inception in 1989. It can often seem like the one sitting at the kids' table while the rest of the teams sit with the adults, but Asbury Park showed it belonged among the best.
That's a ton of talent to replace, which gave the loss to the Cardinals the feeling of the end of an era. Danron Morrissey
"They know that we gave them all they could ask for,'' Amir Conover said. "We came out here and gave it all that we can.'' It was a far cry from last year, when Plainfield demolished Asbury Park 68-35 in the TOC quarterfinals. The Blue Bishops were knocked heavily by their fans and other observers for essentially quitting in the second half. Obviously, Asbury Park came in with the mindset to win and was not interested in moral victories this time around, but clearly a main focus was making sure it would turn in an effort to be proud of. "Dealing with the loss last year of over 35 points, it was really heartbreaking to our fans and they felt like we didn't put it all on the court for our last game," Amir Conover said. "We just wanted to come out here and play 100 percent and give our coach and our fans what they wanted. We just came out here and played our hearts out.''
While some of the seniors haven't been there the whole time, including the Conover twins, who transferred from Lakewood after their freshman year, they all have played a role in a run of success that would be hard for any school to match. They also were the first Shore Conference boys basketball team since Holmdel in 1998-99 to win consecutive Group titles.
Making it more impressive is that Asbury Park consists of all of 345 total students, yet for the last four years has weathered graduation losses to keep piling up
Asbury Park will graduate its entire starting lineup Hammary, the Conovers, point guard Danron Morrissey and center Anthony McNeil - as well as its top two reserves, guards Tahj Hammary and Islam Joshua. The Hammarys, Conovers, Morrissey and Joshua were also integral parts of the football team that won the program's fourth Central Jersey Group I title in five seasons this past fall.
The Blue Bishops seniors can leave with their heads held high after giving the Group III behemoth Cardinals a battle at Pine Belt Arena that was not reflected by the final score. Asbury Park led Plainfield by 11 points in the first quarter and only trailed 3230 at the half. It was a one-point game as late as 2:11 in the third quarter after a pair of free throws by Amir Conover before Plainfield's size began to wear Asbury Park down.
hen the curtain came down for Asbury Park's boys basketball team in a 68-53 loss to Plainfield in this season’s NJSIAA Tournament of Champions quarterfinals, two things were clear.
1 2
Plainfield re-affirmed that it is the best public school team in the state, but if Asbury Park was going to get beat by a better team, it was at least going to make the Cardinals earn it.
Amir Conover
"We had them on the ropes,'' said Asbury Park coach Dave Johnson. "We prepared well, and we didn't just come out here to show up for the tournament. We came here to win.
"We're leaving high school as champions,'' Thomond Hammary said.
"I'll always remember this group here,'' Johnson said.
The victories weren't just on the court, either. The Conover twins were suspended from athletics for their entire sophomore year because of a disciplinary issue that carried over from Lakewood. They also missed their junior football season because of academic ineligibility before joining the basketball team mid-season last year. They could've easily been swallowed up by the streets in Asbury Park and never heard from again. Now they leave having played key roles in winning two Group I basketball titles and a sectional football championship.
"I'm just happy I got my life back on track and started doing what I had to do and made some changes,'' Armond Conover said. "I'm happy with my career. I got three rings.''
As for Johnson, while he knows that he is losing a boatload of talent to graduation, he also knows this is Asbury Park. The pipeline will produce more players. Still, the achievements of this senior class would be tough for a group of newcomers at any school to live up to. That's why even though it was a loss to Plainfield, it was a night for Blue Bishops fans to soak in what an incredible ride they have been on for the last four years because runs like that don't come along often for any school.
"It will be very tough to watch these guys leave, and it's going to be hard to fill their shoes, but it's Asbury Park,'' Johnson said. "There's always someone in the background watching their big brothers.''
