COST OF COOKING
in developing countries
Cooking is a universal necessity, yet in especially developing countries it is inefficient and has high costs for the people in all senses. In developing countires, the basic need to feed a family has huge challenges: Staple diets require long cooking times, yet there is little access to energy and water. Lack of clean fuel means using charcoal or tree-wood for cooking. Charcoal and firewood usage while cooking creates indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution related respiratory diseases kill 2 Million people every year. Half of those are children under the age of 5. Studies show that those people in the developing countries whose daily income is less than 1 USD spend 1/3 of their daily income on cooking fuel. Those who can not afford buying charcoal or firewood have to collect it. Collecting firewood is the job of the women and girls in the family. Usually, girls have to drop out of school to help their mothers collect wood. They have to walk approximately 7 hours a day and carry approximately 20 kilograms of firewood everyday. Not only does firewood collection lead to deforestation, but it also leaves girls and women open to violence. Many rapes happen in Africa while women and girls are out collecting wood.

PILOT PROJECT
EXAMPLES FROM REFUGEE CAMPS
For the past year we have conducted 2 pilot projects in Syrian’s refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey. The pilot project in Jordan was conducted in partnership with the World Food Program and the one in Turkey was conducted in partnership with Disaster and Emergency Relief Presidency of the Turkish Republic and the Turkish Red Crescent. Both our pilot projects proved to be life easier for the refugees. Wonderbag more funds for use elsewhere, all while bringing Wonderbags into camps has
succesfull and showed that Wonderbag makes cooking and overall usage also decreases the fuel and water spendings of camps, creating promoting the adoption of an eco-friendly way to cook. We believe that benefits for the refugees, governments, NGO’s and the environment.
Currently we are also attending a tender of World Food Program Lebanon office for 10,000 Wonderbag’s to be delivered to the refugee camps in Syria.
