by Dr Katrina Warren It’s undeniably true – our pets are part of our family and when we go on holidays, we want them to come too! Nothing is more fun than a family holiday when the pets are included, whether it’s a pooch, a cat or a pony! One of Australia’s leading pet-friendly destinations is the unspoilt Shoalhaven. It offers something for everyone and some of my best holiday memories have been made running along the perfect sandy beaches with my dogs. Pets on the Move When you’re on the road, ensuring your pet has plenty of water and sufficient breaks for relief and a bit of reprieve is a must. RESTRICTION GUIDELINES Dogs in the Shoalhaven are required to be ‘on-leash’ at all times EXCEPT when in an off-leash area. Dogs are totally prohibited from entering the following areas across the Shoalhaven, whether or not they are otherwise leashed or controlled: • Children’s play areas (within 10 metres of any playing apparatus provided in that public place or part for the use of children) • Food preparation/consumption areas (within 10 metres of any apparatus provided in that public place or part for the preparation and consumption of food for human consumption) • Recreation areas where dogs are prohibited • Public bathing areas where dogs are prohibited (including a beach) • School grounds (other than any property used for a residence or the curtilage of a residence) • Child care centres (other than any property used for a residence or the curtilage of a residence) • Shopping areas where dogs are prohibited • Wildlife protection areas For more detailed information and for any updates visit http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au and search for the Companion Animals Act.

Sharing the Shore Did you know that beach nesting birds are some of the most threatened in the world? By simply following a few guidelines with your pet you can have a huge impact on their survival. You and your pet can help by:
Our Lucky loves the sand, and every afternoon we played on the beach and watched the sun set. It was divine!
• Sharing the shoreline by respecting ‘Dog Prohibited’ beach zones. These areas are designated as prohibited because vulnerable shorebirds nest here between August and April each year.
• If you see little birds running swiftly along the beach or hear the larger oystercatchers calling out, please give these birds space. If it is spring or summer, chances are they have a nest or chicks nearby
• Making use of Council’s numerous Dog Off Leash beaches, specially designated for off leash fun!
• Disturbance to these birds can be lethal, the perceived threat of unleashed dogs causing them to leave the eggs or hiding the chicks for dangerously long periods.
• Keeping your dog on a leash on permitted beaches. Beach nesting birds & chicks perceive unleashed dogs as a great threat. Even if your dog isn’t the type to chase, the birds don’t know that! • Look out for temporary signs that alert you to the presence of nesting birds or chicks

Camping & Dogs Getting away from it all and sleeping in the outdoors is a popular Shoalhaven activity with so many unspoilt spots. What could be better than having your dog along too? Camping was a great experience for the whole family. It was really special being able to have our dog Sally join in all the fun.
Spending time together outdoors is one of the greatest things you can do with your dog. Camping offers fresh air, exercise and the opportunity to bond, as well as learning experiences provided by new and challenging environments. With time and patience your dog can become the ultimate outdoor companion. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the great outdoors: • Check with each park before you make a booking as some parks may have changed their dog-friendly policy. • It is your responsiblity to clean up after your dog so be sure to bring some small plastic bags and take the waste home with you. • Training can be important for your dog’s safety if you are venturing into bushland. Make sure your dog comes when called. The command “leave it” could save your dog from a snake or fox bait. Use lots of rewards and positive reinforcement. • Remember to carry water for your dog and a collapsible water bowl. Dogs can’t sweat so they need to drink to stay cool. • A clip on LED light for your dog’s collar will allow you to find him in the dark and allow others to see him too. • A tether, carrier, crate or portable fencing can help to confine your dog. • A dog coat may be needed for cold nights. • A muzzle can be useful to prevent your dog eating found items.

The surrounding mountains are some of the most rugged in Australia which makes an ideal setting for the best horse riding, dirt bike riding and 4WD Australia has to offer.
Neigh-cations Shoalhavenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beautiful bushland and nature trails as well as a range of facilities provide some great opportunities for holidaying with your horse. Shoalhaven offers opportunities to ride and camp with your horse in beautiful bush landscapes. Swimming your horse in lakes and rivers, riding trails through rugged mountains with breathtaking escarpment views, or exploring dense hinterland forests. For those that want to experience the region on horseback but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have their own equine buddy, there are several venues where you can take a trail ride with panoramic views, through lush rainforest, rich farmland, and across creeks and rivers. Holiday riding camps for children are available, as well as corporate rides designed to reward, challenge and motivate your team. It is even possible to hire beautiful horses for your fairytale wedding, here in the Shoalhaven.

Cat Hotels Cats can be nervous travellers, but with planning, stress to you and your kitty can be kept to a minimum.
We didn’t want to leave Tiddles at home alone, so we put her up in a cattery near our cottage. We were able to visit her every day.
When travelling by car, your cat should be kept in their carrier at all times, for your safety and theirs. Most cats will curl up and sleep after a period of meowing. Provide a familiar bed or towel so that your cat feels safe and secure in its carrier. Talk calmly to your cat, and avoid loud music. Book your and your cat’s accommodation ahead of time. Always double-check your hotel’s Pet-Friendly policy at the time of booking. When you arrive at your hotel, check for potential dangers to your cat, such as holes, mouse traps, cupboards or open windows, before opening the carrier. Restrict your cat to one small room, or consider bringing a collapsible pet tent to help them adjust to new surroundings and ensure you won’t spend your holiday searching for a runaway pet. Use your best hotel etiquette by ensuring cleanliness with food bowls and litter trays, and avoid damage to furniture from scratching claws. A ‘do not disturb’ sign can prevent unneccessary opening of the door. You may decide it would be less stressful for your cat to stay in one of the Shoalhaven’s pet holiday facilities. Many offer tranquil, home-like environments with classical music, television, private courtyards or sundecks, heating, scratching posts, plush bedding and lounge suites. Purr-fect. Plan ahead and keep calm, and you and your cat can enjoy travelling together.

Pet Friendly Retail Many cafes, markets and stores in the Shoalhaven welcome pets. Shopping and dining with your dog can be an integral part of your holiday experience. It can also be a bonding experience, and help socialise your dog while boosting his or her confidence. A well-behaved dog in a store or cafe can also be a great ambassador for their species or breed. Businesses welcome pets at their discretion, so it is important to insure your dog’s behaviour is suited to the venue. Ensure your dog is on a leash, will not bark, and will follow commands such as “sit” and “stay”. Take along a water bowl, water bottle, snacks and treats. Also carry plenty of bags so you can pick up after your dog. Only allow your dog to socialise with people or other dogs once invited.
Being a winters day they had beautiful throw rugs on the outside chairs, and knowing we had dogs the waitress brought out a puppychino with our coffees!
The Lookout
Your dog may be very nervous or excited by the shopping or cafe environment. Take him or her for a good long walk before hand. If needed, sit quietly with your dog and allow some time to adust to the sounds and smells. Keep your dog close to you, not in the path of shoppers or waiters. Reward your dog for good behaviour. Watch for signs or stress and be prepared to leave if neccessary. Dogs love exploring new places with the person they love most, they’ll receive attention, hugs, and smiles from many people. People around will enjoy seeing a wagging tail, and it may even be the bright spot that makes their day. And after a fun day with your best friend, you’ll have a tired, happy dog and hopefully some new goodies too!
