Crookhaven Headland Reserve Located at the mouth of the Crookhaven River and accessed through Crookhaven Headland Reserve, the Crookhaven Lighthouse is a point of much historical interest in the Shoalhaven. Crookhaven Headland Reserve has a rich Aboriginal history, with many shell middens and mythological sites known to be located around the headland. PT
Harry Sawkins Park This park is situated west of the Princes Highway near Shoalhaven City Council’s Administration Centre. The park features a large playground network which provides structured play opportunities for children in the 4 to 14 age group. Some equipment is also provided for younger children with parental supervision. Known for its abundance of ducks and geese that live on the central island in the lake (and are always waiting to be fed), the park is popular with young and old for its many recreational opportunities. Currarong
Marriott Park Adjacent to the Princes Highway in the centre of Nowra, Marriott Park has a high quality playground for children 2 to 14 and plenty of large grassy areas for other activities such as ball games and free play. Abrahams Bosom Reserve With easy access to the beach and the famous rock pool, this reserve is a haven for anyone wishing to take a break from the everyday, and is only about 40 minutes from Nowra. Huskisson White Sands Park This park is one of the foremost recreation venues in the Shoalhaven and one of the most popular reserves in the Bay and Basin area. It features modern play equipment for 2 to 14 year olds on the reserve at Hawke Street near to the toilets and car parking facilities. Wander down the hill into Voyager Park for a swim in the picturesque public sea pool, or take a stroll around the public wharf to enjoy the sights of Jervis Bay. BBQ (e) PT, T, PE, DS Moona Moona Reserve Located on the northern bank of the tranquil Moona Moona Creek at Huskisson, this reserve is accessed via Jervis Street and a short road leads from the street to the car park. Enjoy the wonderful views of Point Perpendicular and Jervis Bay National Park from one of the many picnic areas, or wander down to the beach for a quiet dip in the brilliantly coloured water of Jervis Bay. Plantation Point The magical Plantation Point at Vincentia (off Elizabeth Drive) is yet another of Jervis Bay’s beautiful foreshore reserves. Access to the beautiful beaches on either side of this reserve is via constructed walkways. BBQ (e) PT, T, DT, PE

Sanctuary Point Paradise Beach Reserve Located on the foreshores of beautiful St Georges Basin, Paradise Beach reserves provides BBQs, playground, shelters and toilet amentities suitable for community or family gatherings. BBQ (e) PT, T, DT, PE
SUSSEX INLET Sussex Inlet Foreshore reserves With a cycleway running from Badgee through to Chris Creek, the foreshore has easy access from the end of Sussex Inlet main street (Jacob Street). BBQ PT, T, SH
Swan Lake Foreshore reserves Just south of Sussex Inlet, between Swan Haven and Cudmirrah, is the beautiful Swan Lake. Cudmirrah National Park borders much of the lake, but there are also numerous Council-managed reserves, which are easily accessible and provide a range of facilities for visitors, including playground and picnic facilities at various locations, and toilets at the more popular reserves. Why not take the opportunity to hire a canoe (available during summer only) or go sailing on the lake? Fishing and swimming are also popular activities. Locals can probably advise you of the best spots.
Washerwomans Beach Located in the idyllic village of Bendalong. Walk from Bendalong throught the National Park to Monument Beach or simply relax and enjoy quiet isolated coastline north of Manyana. A perfect spot for the whole family to enjoy. BBQ, PT, T, DT, SH
Milton Mick Ryan Reserve At the northern end of Milton look for the giant Port Jackson fig that dominates this park. Mick Ryan Reserve amenities include picnic facilities, BBQs, and play equipment. Mollymook Mollymook Reserve Along beautiful Mollymook Beach there is a walkway with undercover BBQs dotted along the foreshore. A large car park provides ample parking, and a grassed area surrounding extensive play equipment is located behind the Mollymook Surf Club, which houses amenities including a beach shower. BBQ (e) PT, T, PE, DS Narrawallee Inlet Reserve At the end of Matron Porter Drive is a shaded family picnic area with play equipment, BBQs, amenities including a beach shower, and access to Narrawallee Inlet and ocean beach. picnic & play Burrill Lake Burrill Lake Lions Park The first major park when entering the Shoalhaven from the south is located on the banks of Burrill Lake. This park offers picnic shelters capable of holding larger groups, with formal pathways and challenging play equipment which make this park ideal for revitalising your energy after time spent on the road. BBQ (e) PT, T, PE, SH Foreshore Reserves There are a number of reserves along the foreshores of Burrill Lake. A large area of parkland has been developed by the Lions Club adjacent to the Princes Highway on the southern side of the bridge. It provides a scenic rest stop for long-distance travellers with access to Burrill Beach or to the lake itself. A delightful path takes visitors across a bridge and around the edge of the lake, providing access to several fishing platforms extending into the lake. Lake Conjola Foreshore Reserves Lake Conjola is one of the Shoalhaven’s most popular recreation areas. The foreshore reserves are located strategically around the lake from Cunjurong in the north, Fisherman’s Paradise to the west and the village of Lake Conjola to the south. Foreshore Reserves Towards the southern end of the Shoalhaven are these two popular holiday destinations. The foreshore is dotted with rocky outcrops and the sand is a rich yellow compared to the stark whiteness of the sand of the Jervis Bay beaches. Parks offer opportunities for all skill levels and include a range of bowls, ramps and street elements. A favourite family activity, walking gives everyone the chance to spend time together in the open air, enjoying the landscape and exercise. Whatever your fitness levels, you’ll find a great variety of walks in the Shoalhaven – something for everyone.
BERRY & THE VALLEY Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Farm Museum Located on the northern side of the Kangaroo River at Hampden Bridge. Drive into the parking area and pay a small entry fee at the office. Two circular walks can be done separately or together. For the full walk, after crossing the swing bridge, turn left and take the Red Walk. Soon the river will appear far below (you will have already passed a track which leads down to the water’s edge). Cross the little log bridge and follow the red tree markers. Keep to the left when you come to a junction (you will exit via this path later on). Climb down into Nelsons Creek, cross it and walk upstream to Toms Pool. While there, take the five minute circular walk around the Moss Gardens and back to the pool. Then climb up and out of the creek and continue along the top trail back to the junction previously mentioned.

After crossing back over the log bridge, turn left and follow the red and white markers in a clockwise direction back to the museum. You now have the opportunity to explore the museum together with its picnic facilities, shelter sheds, shop outlet, BBQs and toilets.
NOWRA & DISTRICT Bomaderry Bomaderry Creek Bushland Access to the principal track head is via Narang Road in Bomaderry. There are someparking spaces at the track head but extra spaces are available at the Bomaderry Tennis Courts 50 metres away. The route of the track follows Bomaderry Creek which has carved a course through sandstone forming impressive cliffs, rock walls, overhangs and caves. Commencing at the Weir/ Narang Road track head there is a choice of walks available;

Bens Walk, Nowra
• A 5.5km return walk along the eastern and western tracks taking about 3 hours. • A 1.4km return walk along the western track to Rock Crossing, returning to the track head via Mossy Gully, taking about 1 hour. The walk is mostly flat with a few steps and one vertical ladder approximately 1.5 metres high A detailed map of the walk, picnic and barbecue facilities is available at the Weir track head. The water in Bomaderry Creek is not suitable for drinking so carry your own drinking water.
North Nowra The Grotto This is a beautiful walk with steep entrances and exits zigzagging down 45 metres from the cliff tops to the banks of the Shoalhaven River. Drive from Nowra via Illaroo Road, McMahons Road, Hansons Road, Gunyuma Crescent and Yurunga Drive. Just past Kareela Crescent around the bend is the off-road carpark. A ‘danger’ signwarns of the cliff tops in the vicinity. Follow one of the signs to the lookout for magnificent views of the river, golf course and Nowra district. Then take the right track to The Grotto, keeping left to zigzag down a steep set of rocky steps almost to the river level. Go right, taking great care with children on the walk down. At the bottom is the site of a 1920s farm and orchard. Continue a short distance till you find the other set of zigzag steps leading up to a seven or eight minute climb to the top.
through Depot Farm Reserve (Depot Road) which offers car parking and picnic facilities. For a pleasant short walk, start from the Showground and Hanging Rock, walk down to the footbridge and return to the Showground via the lower track. Dogs are prohibited from using this track.
NORTHERN BEACHES Currarong Abrahams Bosom Reserve Known by seafarers for many years and named after the reference in the Old Testament to shelter of Abraham’s Bosom, this area has afforded shelter to vessels plying the coast in turbulent weather. The SS Merimbula ran aground on this headland during a storm in 1928. At first light all the passengers and crew were taken to safety on Abrahams Bosom Beach. Wreck Walk: A 2.5km return walk which takes a leisurely one hour on an easy gradient and takes in the site of the wreck of the SS Merimbula. Coomies Walk: This includes the Wreck Walk and is a 9km, hillier walk and takes about three hours. A feature of this walk is the panoramic view from the Trig Station. Both walks feature coastal seascape scenery of beaches, estuaries, ocean, rock formations, massive sandstone cliffs and headlands.

Bens Walk The well-loved Bens Walk track of about 5.5 kilometres, meanders along the banks of the Shoalhaven River through native bushland.
Wirreecoo Walking Trail & Mangrove Boardwalk This walking trail is accessible from the Crown Reserve adjacent to the Lady Denman Heritage Complex. There are two parts to the walk, the Wirreecoo Walking trail can take up to one hour and the Mangrove Boardwalk takes about 30 minutes.
TThe southern access point is at Nowra Showground, with parking, picnic facilities and spectacular views from Hanging Rock. On the northern side of the river, the track is accessible

The museum is open daily from 10am – 4pm, however, the walks are open to the public at all times. Jervis Bay National Park – Greenfields Beach walk Two tracks from Greenfields Beach provide a 1–2 hour walk along the coast and into the forest. The main track, White Sands Walk, also extends north (outside the National Park) to Blenheim Beach and Plantation Point. White Sands Walk (2km return) begins at the boardwalk, crosses the creek and follows the coast. Interpretive signs at the start and along the track highlight the importance of the bay. To continue to Hyams Beach, take the steps at the end of White Sands Walk, cross Duck Creek and walk through the forest behind Hyams Beach to Aster Street. From here you can return via Chinamans Beach, linking up with the track at Duck Creek.
Jervis Bay Booderee National Park Located on the southern peninsular of Jervis Bay, Booderee is an Aboriginal word from the local Dhurga language meaning ‘bay of plenty’ or ‘plenty of fish’. The National Park and Botanic Garden were handed back to the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community in 1995. The National Park is full of spectacular scenery and a huge array of animal and bird life may be spotted on the many walking trails. St Georges Basin The Basin Walking Track This tranquil walk along the foreshore of St Georges Basin (Paradise Beach to Palm Beach) is a popular short walk which takes about 40 minutes each way. The beaches along the Basin Walk are popular spots for swimming and fishing, or if you’re lucky enough to have a boat, there is access for sailing and water skiing.
There are three track heads for the Basin Walk. Greville Avenue leads to access points at Palm Beach Reserve and at Macleans Point, while Walmer Avenue provides access to Paradise Beach Reserve. Both reserves have carparking, picnic and toilet facilities.
MILTON/ULLADULLA Cunjurong Point Bowerbird Walk Just off Ottawa Street at Cunjurong Point is an area of Crown Reserve which forms the track head of Bowerbird Walk. Take the track at the right of the reserve entrance for a five minute stroll to an elevated lookout. From here, you can see across the rock shelf to Green Island. Watch for dolphins in the crystal clear water.
Milton/Ulladulla Pigeon House Mountain/Didthul (Note: because the access to Pigeon House Mountain/Didthul is by unsealed road, visitors are advised to check with the Visitor Centre on the road’s condition.) The climb to the summit of Pigeon House Mountain is becoming an increasingly popular activity with over 8,000 people making the effort each year. From the top of the mountain there are magnificent panoramic views of the rugged cliffs and gorges carved by the Clyde River and its tributaries. Dominating the view to the north-west are two elongated plateaux of Byangee Walls and The Castle. On a good day, coastline stretching from Point Perpendicular in the north to Mount Dromadery in the south can be seen, making the walk a most rewarding experience. How to Get There: There are two roads that lead off the Princes Highway to the Pigeon House Mountain walking track. 1. At Milton, turn into Croobyar Road 2. Approximately 3kms south of Burrill Lake into the Wheelbarrow Road. Travel to the car park and picnic area at the start of the track (approx. 27kms).

parks walks walking&the walk The walk to the top of Pigeon House Mountain and return takes about 4 hours. The walk can be divided into four stages: Stage 1: A steep climb of 800m from the car park to the first cliff line and the National Park boundary. The track follows a steep spur through a forest of black ash with an open understorey. The rock types of this first section are metamorphosed Ordovician sediments that are about 490 million years old (give or take a year). The first sandstone cliff line is early Permian, which is about 250 million years old. Stage 2: A flat walk of 1km from the top of the first cliff line to where the sandy track starts to climb again. Many wildflowers can be seen in spring and summer. Common plants are the Wattle and the Hairpin Banksia and many heaths. Stage 3: A steep climb of 500m takes us to the famous ladders. Initially, the sandstone soils support heath and sedge but as the track climbs, the soil gets deeper and clayier allowing taller, denser vegetation to grow. Towards the top of this stage a wet forest grows where the Pigeon House cliff line provides shelter from the sun. Lyrebirds may be seen or heard here. Stage 4: The summit of Pigeon House Mountain is reached by climbing a series of steel ladders attached to the cliff face. This peak is the southern most remnant of a once extensive sandstone plateau stretching north towards the Shoalhaven River. The plateau has been dissected by streams to produce the grand mountain scenery of the Budawang Range. From the summit the different layers of sandstone can be traced in the surrounding cliffs. The vegetation on the summit includes the Pigeon House Ash which is found only in the Budawang area.

Warden Head and North Head Three easy grade tracks have been developed around Warden Head and North Head at Ulladulla. All the tracks have been developed in conjunction with the local Aboriginal community, and incorporate local art as an educational tool. Guided tours can be booked through Budamurra Aboriginal Corporation on (02) 4455 5883, who also manage a local gallery and Aboriginal dance troupe. If you wish to walk without a guide, parking for the Coomee Nulunga Cultural Track is provided on the southern side of Deering Street, opposite Lighthouse Oval. Walk through the legs of the Corroboree Man and onto a track developed and maintained by the Aboriginal community. Follow the totems along the trail (which takes approximately one and a half hours) to gain an insight into the flora and fauna representative of the Ulladulla district. Beach access is available from the track. Track two, Snake Ground is a much shorter track which has only recently been completed. This track follows the headland from a trackhead at the lighthouse and terminates in a BBQ and picnic area. The North Head track will be a wheelchair accessible loop of approximately 1km, once completed. The track will incorporate viewing platforms and interpretive signage, as well as shelter sheds and seating. Tucked away on Ulladulla’s North Head is an experience which will delight and inform people of all ages. It is a cultural trail which tells the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal history of the local area. The track was constructed to provide access for as many people as possible, including those in wheelchairs and parent with prams. It has a gravel surface and consists of two 1 km loops. There are also carvings, signs and sculptures telling the story. The track head is at the end of Dolphin Street on the northern side of the harbour and east of the Princes Highway. Ulladulla Wildflower Reserve Located on the western edge of Ulladulla is a secluded haven of over 150 different species of native plants. The reserve is easily enjoyed on flat walking trails, the longest of which is 1.3kms.

lighthouses There’s always been something romantic and exciting about lighthouses. Perhaps it’s the fact that they often stand in wild and untamed places where the wind blusters, waves buffet and eagles soar overhead. Lighthouses are a vital and familiar part of the Shoalhaven’s maritime heritage. They range in size from the mighty beacon at Point Perpendicular to the smaller lights at Crookhaven Head and Ulladulla. Sadly, for some purists, the era of the lighthouse keeper has been relegated to history with the lights now unmanned. Point Perpendicular Lighthouse

The original lighthouse at Crookhaven Heads was constructed of timber in 1882. This was later demolished when a new lighthouse to the south of the Shoalhaven River mouth was built in 1904. The lighthouse incorporates the lantern from the former lighthouse on Cape St George which dates back to 1863.
Built in the wrong place about 1km south of the southern entrance of Jervis Bay, the Cape St George lighthouse was considered a navigational hazard. From 1864-1893, 23 ships were wrecked in the vicinity of Jervis Bay. Abandoned in 1899, the sandstone structure was destroyed by Naval shelling in the early 1920s.
The walk around the headland adjacent to the historical lighthouse follows a well-developed track and provides good views of the whole of the Crookhaven Bight and Shoalhaven River.
This ruined sandstone lighthouse in Booderee National Park is the perfect place to take in stunning views of the coast, watch out for whales or commune with the sea eagles cruising along the cliff line.
Point Perpendicular Built in 1899 to replace the Cape St George station, the imposing Point Perpendicular lighthouse stands on the cliffs more than 60 metres above the sea at the northern entrance to Jervis Bay. In 1993, John Hampson the last keeper left when the light was extinguished and replaced with an automatic navaid tower. Note: as Beecroft Peninsula is Commonwealth property and serves the bombardment range for the Royal Australian Navy, access to Point Perpendicular is restricted at times.

MILTON/ULLADULLA Ulladulla Originally located on the harbour breakwater in 1873 and one of only 2 NSW lighthouses constructed from wrought iron plates, the lighthouse was relocated to Warden Head in 1879. The lighthouse keeper’s cottage was constructed in 1889 and, after the light was automated, was relocated in 1922 to the Princes Highway in Milton where it operates as a medical centre.
