Art and About

The glorious natural landscape of Shoalhaven has inspired artists and creatives for generations. Today, the region is abundant with museums and galleries, boutique stores with local artisans’ wares, and arty things to see and do.

The newest attraction in town is the recently re-opened Bundanon, Arthur Boyd’s historic homestead and studio, which now hosts a state-of-the-art gallery. Sitting on 100 hectares of gardens and bushland next to the Shoalhaven River, Bundanon hosts seasonal exhibitions as well as experiences like forest bathing, Aboriginal cultural walks, even weaving and painting workshops. New executive chef Douglas Innes-Will heads up the reimagined Ramox Café so there’s plenty of gastronomic treasures to discover to compliment your arty adventures. You can even stay the night!

Along with Bundanon, locals and visitors alike have long loved our local galleries. Shoalhaven Regional Gallery in Nowra features contemporary and traditional art exhibitions by leading Australian and Shoalhaven artists. Take a piece of art home with you at Precinct Gallery in Berry, Huskisson Framing and Gallery or Shoalhaven Fine Art and Framing in Jervis Bay, or Van Rensburg or Millhouse Galleries in Milton. Learn something new and revel in our past, with an array of historical exhibits, maritime collections and antiques to discover. The Fleet Air Arm Museum showcases the region’s naval history, and Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, our coastal and cultural heritage, including the full-size Lady Denman Ferry. In Nowra, head to Sydney Living Museums’ Meroogal, an 1880s home, open to the public, which showcases life back in the day for the generations of women who lived there. Experience colonial life in Kangaroo Valley’s Pioneer Village Museum, a collection of cottages and exhibits throughout seven hectares of bushland. Other historical highlights include the Berry Museum, Fossil House and walk in Ulladulla, Lake Tabourie Museum, and the South Coast Railway History Museum.

Shoalhaven provides the perfect backdrop for events, and year-round, there’s plenty to experience at the many venues dotted along the South Coast. The Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre stages everything from local theatre to large touring productions. The historic Milton Theatre is a live music venue like no other, or you can head out to one of the local wineries or breweries to have local bands serenade you over a cool beverage.
