Climb to the top of a lighthouse

“This area is the best, I always tell my friends that.” Taj Burrow, Pro Surfer

The Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste lighthouses stand guard at the tip of each cape, proudly protecting mariners for over 100 years. Climb to the top and be inspired by breathtaking views over the ocean, national parks and beyond. Visit the famous Busselton Jetty Take a stroll along this coastal icon, the southern hemisphere’s longest timber piled structure and home to the world renowned Underwater Observatory. Jump on the Jetty Train for a chilled out, scenic trip almost 2km out into Geographe Bay. Watch whales at play

The Margaret River Region is home to hundreds of kilometres of stunning coastline, abundant with life and colour. From rugged rocky bays, dramatic limestone cliffs, white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters to thunderous surf beaches, it is a spectacular aquatic playground just waiting to be explored. With over 75 surf breaks (not including the secret ones!) and exceptional dive and snorkelling spots, there is something for everyone. Calm and protected bays provide perfect conditions for sailing and fishing, and our forest-lined rivers are fantastic for kayaking and water sports. Your most memorable holiday moments may well be taking in the breathtaking views along the coastline. In 2014 Cape Leeuwin was ranked in the world’s top 10 ocean views by National Geographic magazine, and Busselton’s sunsets were proclaimed ‘Best in Australia’ by leading travel website Experience Oz. Be sure to keep your camera at the ready!

With not one but TWO whale seasons, this is the place to see these huge creatures up close. Between June & August, head out from Augusta to catch Southern Right and Humpback whales, or take a trip off Busselton or Dunsborough from September to December to see the bay transform into a ‘nursery’ of mothers and their newborn calves. Hit the beach Paddle in gentle waters at a familyfriendly beach, with BBQ facilities, toilets and ample parking close by. Get active with a wide range of watersports, or simply laze away the day on sun-drenched white sands. See the surfers With some of the world’s most loved surf breaks in our backyard, there’s a wave for everyone from novices to professionals. Catch the action at one of the many surf competitions held throughout the year... or take a lesson and get out there yourself!

Ocean Life Best beaches The region’s beaches are exceptional for swimming, diving, snorkelling, sailing, kayaking and watersports – there is something for everyone. These are our favourites: • Gnarabup: Popular family swimming beach that’s also great for snorkelling or stand up paddling • Meelup: Protected beach near Dunsborough, with shady trees, BBQs and aqua blue water • Smiths: Sheltered from the southern elements with plenty of space to relax • Hamelin Bay: Popular family swimming beach; spot the friendly eagle rays close to shore

Two working lighthouses Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste each boast one of the few remaining operational lighthouses where you can take guided tours. Cape Leeuwin Situated at the most south westerly tip of Australia where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the Australian mainland. Frequent guided tours depart daily from 9:00am - 4:20pm, or undertake an audio tour of the grounds – available in English, Mandarin and German. Cape Naturaliste This working lighthouse marks the start of the Cape to Cape Track and provides breathtaking panoramic views over the Indian Ocean and the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

“The surf, the beaches, the food, the wine, the people, the air. It’s all good mate. You should go there.” Hugh Jackman, Internationally acclaimed actor

The Margaret River Region is one of the most visually stunning regions in the world. Tremendous rugged cliffs reach down into wild, electric blue seas, while bright green expanses of grape vines contrast with the towering majesty of our rare and ancient forests. Delve deeper and in just one day, you could find yourself contemplating a prehistoric stalactite formation inside a cave, meandering Australia’s best walk trails or exploring the rivers and wetlands that nourish the region. The Margaret River Region is one of only 34 internationally-recognised biodiversity ‘hotspots’ in the world, and the only one in Australia. Nature lovers revel in the dazzling display of native

flora, birds and animals which call this part of the world home and provide some of the best photographic opportunities you could ask for, no matter the season. The region’s warm Mediterranean-style climate is perfect grape-growing weather, and no one appreciates this more than our 200-plus wine producers, who are part of a thriving industry cultivated from a small group of fledgling winemakers in the late 1960s. Vast rolling hills of grapevines dotted with cellar doors meld seamlessly into surfscapes and back into the land like the tide.

e r u t a n o t k c a B t e G Biodiversity and wildflower hotspot The Margaret River Region is Australia’s equivalent of the Amazon basin – part of one of only 34 biodiversity hotspots in the world. Biodiversity hotspots are the richest and most threatened reservoirs of plant and animal life on earth. Botanical enthusiasts delight in the 2500 wildflower species, including rare orchids and Kangaroo Paws which are indigenous to the area. The surrounding environment is a haven for wildlife lovers. Brilliantly coloured parrots, sapphire-like splendid wrens and native wildlife including kangaroo, emu, chuditch and ringtail possum make the forests their home.

Underground wonderland Beneath this awe-inspiring terrain lies a world-famous hidden labyrinth of limestone cave systems, formed around 1 million years ago. Don’t miss:

• When to go: Spring is wildflower season Peak months - September and October • Where to spot wildflowers: ask your local visitor centre for the current hotspots • Need a guide? Guided wildflower tours are available – book at your local visitor centre

Jewel Cave: The largest show cave in Western Australia, Jewel Cave’s four massive chambers make you feel like you’re in a lofty natural cathedral.

Get outdoors and experience the region’s many walk and cycle trails. Autumn and spring are the best times to hit the trails due to mild weather, autumn’s pumping surf and spring’s whales and wildflowers.

These two beautiful walks will provide around 3.5 hours of serene strolling. Enjoy brekky at a café in Dunsborough, before heading to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse for the 2km, relatively flat ‘Lighthouse Walk’. Enjoy spectacular scenery which includes whales and wildflowers in spring. Next, take the short drive to Yallingup for the 7km Wardanup Trail. The steep sections will reward you with views of the coast and Canal Rocks. Put your feet up and quench your thirst at a nearby restaurant or brewery. If you’re keen for more activity, the Twilight Didgeridoo tour at Ngilgi Cave is a magical way to end the day.

Art, history and culture have been an essential aspect of life in The Margaret River Region, since times of the earliest inhabitants of the land some 50,000 years ago. These traditions continue today with celebrations of Aboriginal indigenous art, food and heritage specific to the Wardandi people forming some of the most genuine experiences you can have within the region. European settlements and landmarks still stand much as they did when they were originally built in the late 1800s as housing for early farmers, timber workers and mariners. Visiting these structures is a great way to understand how many of the townships you can visit today first prospered at the turn of the century. Since those early days, people have found creative inspiration from the land, the sea and beyond. In recent years, The Margaret River Region’s art scene has blossomed and grown into
