Madeira Beach capping future building heights MADEIRA BEACH - After a monthslong battle (years-long?) over new real estate developments in the city, the Madeira Beach City Commission is wrapping up a new proposed ordinance that will cap the height of any future buildings at five stories. That’s four stories plus a ground level parking garage. Up until now, the city never had an actual limit to building heights in its Planned Development Codes; previously, this was something that was discussed with developers and decided on a case-by-case basis. According to Madeira Beach’s Community Development Director, Linda Portal, developers had been using this planned development loophole to circumvent the city’s standard height restriction of five stories. Basically, the new ordinance will ensure that any and all new buildings in Madeira Beach will not exceed five stories. For the most part. But that’s a story for another day.

This year’s ranking of the 10 best hotels in Florida features seven properties on the Gulf of Mexico--and two of those are in Clearwater Beach. The magazine’s readers rate the hotels on their facilities, location, service, food and overall value. Coming in at number four on the list is the Opal Sands Resort, located at 430 S. Gulfview Blvd., a comtemporary $50 million beachfront getaway that opened in early 2016. The Sandpearl Resort, another Ocean Properties hotel, was ranked

erhaps with an eye to such tourist shopping destinations as John’s Pass Village, St. Pete Beach City Commissioners recently approved spending up to $250,000 in 2019 to give the historic Corey Avenue district a cosmetic overhaul to better attract visitors. Jerry Dabkowski with St. Petersburgbased civil engineering and planning firm George F. Young, Inc., was tasked by City Manager Wayne Saunders to devise a comprehensive plan to beautify the area. Dabkowski offered a plethora of ideas to update Corey Avenue. Some of his suggestions included perhaps adding a prominent archway at Gulf Boulevard

as an entrance to Corey Avenue; installing plenty of dought- and heatresistant landscaping, as well as LED lights; perhaps incorporating new “green” pavement materials that would allow rainwater to be absorbed rather than running off and creating puddles and other hazards; and reworking the current parking configuration to allow for more parking spaces. Another suggestion was the installation of “hidden” electrical boxes in the pavement underfoot that could be accessed by vendors during the city’s numerous street fairs and festivals. Dabkowski noted that the Corey Avenue area has not seen many improvements over the years, so pedestrian safety enhancements

should be a priority for the city. To that end, Dabkowski suggested the construction of intersection “bulb-outs” to provide pedestrians with a more visible place to cross that also has the effect of actually narrowing the roadway. A bulb-out is an extension of the curb or sidewalk into the road; the features have been proven to dramatically improve pedrestrian safety. Another important safety feature the city was urged to consider as part of the project is improvements to the current ADA ramps, which Dabkowski said are

in poor condition and in need of general updating. According to Saunders, the overall beautifcation project will be a work in progress over the course of several years as the city is able to budget for more and more enhancements over time. City commissioners agreed to earmark the initial $250,000 to move forward with renovation projects for 2019 and asked Dabkowski to work on a conceptual plan for them to take a look at and get the ball rolling.

edington Shores’ iconic Redington Long Pier, which has stretched 1,200 feet into the Gulf of Mexico for nearly 60 years, could soon be demolished after more than a decade of damage and disrepair have made the structure potentially dangerous to beachgoers. According to Assistant County Attorney Brendan Mackesey, after a report was filed by Pinellas County staff recommending the demolition of the pier, state and county officials recently took steps to prepare a lawsuit against the owner of the pier, Tony Antonious and his company, JERMC Ltd., for the pier to be torn down. The county’s report says, “In 2006, Pinellas County obtained an injunction against JERMC Ltd. to secure the pier and prohibit any public access to the pier unless and until the pier was properly repaired. Although remaining closed to the public, the pier has con-

tinued to fall into a state of disrepair such as to become a hazard to public safety for those who may be recreating below it.” The pier received extensive damage from last year’s Hurricane Irma, and current repair estimates stand at between $300,000 and $500,000. Antonious says he doesn’t have the money to make the repairs, but over 1,900 Redington Shores residents have signed a petition imploring the various government officials to find a way to save the pier.

Text-to-911 now available in Pinellas County

PINELLAS COUNTY - Citizens who cannot place a call to 911 in an emergency now have the alternative option to text for police, fire or medical response. The new text-to-911 capability was announced earlier this month at the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners meeting. Texts should only be used under circumstances when callers are unable to call for help. Calling 911 is still the best way to share information with emergency telecommunicators for a quick response. Those who use text-to-911 should remember the following tips before sending a message: • Always call 911 if you can; text the number 911 if you can’t. • Send a brief message including your address and description of the emergency. • Do not send pictures, videos or emojis; avoid using slang.

news In Brief Pinellas County continues to rake in tourism dollars CLEARWATER - According to Visit St. Pete-Clearwater President and CEO David Downing, Pinellas County’s bed tax collections for fiscal year 20172018 came in at $59.7 million, an increase of 9 percent over last year, something Downing called an “extraordinary achievement.” The Tourist Development Tax - or bed tax - is a 6 percent tax collected on all room rentals in addition to the total rental amount. January and September were the only months out of the year that were slightly down, .59 percent and .2 percent respectively. The downtick in September was likely attributable to Hurricane Michael and the red tide epidemic. Pinellas County has booked more hotel rooms this year than any other area in Florida. TradeWinds undergoing $13 million renovation ST. PETE BEACH - The TradeWinds Island Resorts in St. Pete Beach is currently undergoing a more than $13 million room renovation at both the Island Grand and Guy Harvey Outpost properties. The Island Grand room renovation began with 288 rooms in the Jacaranda building earlier this fall, with all rooms slated to be redone by the end of 2020. All 211 rooms at Guy Harvey Outpost are currently being

FREE MEAL Redington Beach aims to update code of ordinances REDINGTON BEACH - Redington Beach Town Commissioners recently set about updating a number of outdated ordinances, in particular in the town’s building codes. Several were approved with nary a whisper of conflict, until an ordinance pertaining to the hours that construction can take place came up for discussion. Currently, construction is only allowed on a weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The new proposed ordinance, which was previously approved by the town’s Planning Board, stipulates that construction can also occur on Saturdays between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. but will still be banned on Sundays and holidays. Despite one resident’s vehement objection, commissioners unanimously approved the ordinance

Breakfast Station: The best of both worlds

t seems like I am always trying to find a great place to go for breakfast. Or lunch, for that matter. JD’s Restaurant & Lounge in Indian Rocks Beach has long been a family favorite, but let’s be honest, sometimes it’s a struggle to get there before they stop serving breakfast at 11:00 a.m. Hey, I don’t judge you, you don’t judge me. Deal? I guess I should back up a little and explain my whole breakfast vs. lunch dilemma. In short, I can never figure out what I’m in the mood for. Breakfast. Lunch. Sweet. Salty. You get the drill. I don’t think I’m alone here. So imagine my delight--yes, delight!--when I learned that Breakfast Station, in Seminole’s Oakhurst Plaza, serves breakfast AND lunch from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Every. Single. Day. Are these guys smart or what? Breakfast Station has been there for a couple of years now, but I am ashamed to admit that I had no idea! It’s not the first time I’ve been late to the party, but Breakfast Station has obviously built up a stable of local

devotees, one of which I am now happy to call myself. When I first walked through the door at Breakfast Station, it felt like I was transported back to the days of yore, when my grandpa used to take me out to eat at his favorite diner on Saturday mornings. I could tell right away that Breakfast Station is the sort of place where customers quickly become friends, and my dining companion and I were no exception. We were greeted right away by our server, Eileen, who would prove to be exceptional at her craft. Talk about on the ball! She made some fantastic recommendations from the menu, and thank God she did, because one of her recommendations was the Cinnamon Swirl pancakes. I am not even kidding, they were delicious! When you go to

My date and I shared the pancakes and the sounds coming from our table were practically R-rated. Just kidding, but they were so, so good. Now that I have devoted half of this dining feature to a pancake (so good!), let me move on to the rest of our meal. Our trip to Breakfast Station was, ironically, supposed to be for lunch, so we also ordered the Sante Fe salad (a garden salad

with tomato, fresh spinach, cucumbers, peppers, onions, egg and grilled chicken breast, all for just $7.59). It was tasty and fresh, and I think it is worth mentioning the homemade “caboose crispers” that come with all the salads. They were definitely yummy and a really nice addition. We also ordered Jim’s BLT, Breakfast Station’s take on the simple yet classic bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, for only $6.99. It was delish, super fresh, and served with hot french fries. At this point, I really couldn’t have asked for anything more, except maybe a bed for my nappy time. Breakfast Station features an array of breakfast and lunch items, including what I will be ordering on my next visit, the stuffed french toast, as well as burgers, wraps, quesadillas and various daily specials. I get the feeling you really can’t go wrong here. Our overall experience at Breakfast Station was superb, from the excellent service and atmosphere to the affordable prices. Living in Indian Rocks Beach, I sometimes get a little sticker shock when we dine out locally, but that’s definitely not the case at Breakfast Station. Now go check it out for yourselves and tell them the crazy people from Beach Scene said hi! Bon appetit!
