In Brief Sea turtle season starts May 1 CLEARWATER BEACH - Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1 and ends Oct. 31. Newly hatched turtles find their way to the sea by following the natural light reflected by the water. If they disorient and head the wrong way, they may starve to death before landing in the floating sargassum weeds that are their food source. Clearwater city ordinances determine specific lighting requirements for beach parking lots, streets and promenades to protect sea turtles. If you live near the beach, make sure you shut off or dim your lights at night. In May 2018, Clearwater also approved a voluntary resolution that promotes the long-term goal of reducing the harms of plastic pollution and single-use plastics. Residents are encouraged to choose reusable or paper-based items when playing at the beach, and properly dispose of all garbage to help protect sea turtles and other marine life. If you find an unmarked turtle nest on the beach, don’t disturb it and noti-

Animal Services looking for dog and kitten fosters
By Sandra Nickless
PINELLAS COUNTY - This time of year, Pinellas County Animal Services receives 40-50 new kittens every week that need a temporary, safe foster home to live for two-to-four weeks as they get ready to find a forever home through adoption. Fostering is easy and flexible: you just fill out a volunteer application online, take a brief orientation course and Animal Services will take care of all medical support, food and other supplies during the fostering experience. The next orientation course is planned for May 10 at 10:00 a.m. at Pinellas County Animal Services, 12450 Ulmerton Rd., Largo. There are also fostering opportunities available for dogs. Those interested in the fostering program can call 727-582-2592 or visit: pinellascounty.org/animalservices/foster-care.htm.
n an effort to boost pedestrian safety in Indian Rocks Beach, city officials are planning on moving three current crosswalks and installing five new crosswalk locations along Gulf Boulevard. The city also has plans to paint crosswalk locations on every side street abutting Gulf Boulevard as an additional safety measure. Three of the crosswalks that are currently located in the middle of the block will be moved to the actual intersections where people like to cross. These crosswalks will be relocated to Eighth Avenue, 12th Avenue and 26th Avenue. The five new crosswalk locations will be installed at 10th Avenue, 15th Avenue, 16th Avenue, 23rd Avenue and 24th Avenue. These will include a median in the roadway, bollard light fixtures and flashing lights that are triggered when a pedestrian pushes a button. According to City Manager Gregg Mims, the crosswalk work will be done

in phases and the county will cover the bulk of the tab. The city has not yet determined when the project will get underway. Florida is by far the most dangerous state for pedestrians, with Tampa Bay consistently ranking high on the list of fatalities. In Florida, pedestrians have the right-of-way while using a crosswalk and cars are required to stop.

Clearwater Beach looks to the future with driver-less buses By Jason Coffman

n their ongoing battle against traffic congestion in Clearwater Beach, Clearwater city officials recently laid out their most recent plan of attack: a driver-less, autonomous minibus that would be used to ferry tourists around the north end of the beach. In December of last year, the federal government made available $60 million in grant money for communities that are willing to test drive the “safe integration of automated driving systems” on our roadways. According to Clearwater’s Senior Transportation Planner, Richard
Hartman, the Clearwater City Council recently agreed to show its support in a grant application for the utilization of a driver-less 12-passenger bus that will make a loop up Mandalay Avenue to Juanita Way and back, a stretch of about one mile. According to the vehicle’s manufacturer, French-based company Navya, the bus is an electric vehicle that will stayed charged all day if the proposed route is less than one mile. It will only go about 12 miles per hour and uses sensors and wifi to detect other vehicles and determines when to stop. The city is proposing to run the test
program between October and January, before the roads get too busy. It will be a collaboration between the city, Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) and engineering firm Stantec. If successful, PSTA officials have said they would like to eventually expand the service in areas throughout Pinellas County. The cities of Dunedin and St. Petersburg have also been discussing rolling out the buses. According to Navya, the buses are already in use at a variety of private sites and cities across the globe, including on the campus of the University of Michigan, Chalmers University in
Sweden, Curtin University in Perth, Australia, Sydney Olympic Park in Australia, and numerous other cities throughout Europe, Australia and Asia. Stateside, the first driver-less mass transit test program launched in November 2017 in downtown Las Vegas.

fter months of uncertainty, the Madeira Beach Board of Commissioners and the John’s Pass Merchant’s Association recently agreed to a deal to hold the John’s Pass Seafood Festival in the city for at least one more year. After last year’s 37th annual seafood festival, the Merchant’s Association said they would no longer sponsor the event after conflicts with the city about who paid for what and who received what revenue from the event. Parking costs and revenues were a big sticking point at that time. The city has since hashed out a new agreement with the Association, whereby the city will be in charge of the parking situation during the festival. In exchange for picking up all of the associated costs, such as sanitation and
In Brief Lifeguards still needed for 2019 beach season PINELLAS COUNTY - The county is hiring lifeguards to monitor county beaches and help visitors have a safe and fun time. Lifeguards will be stationed on county beaches at Fort De Soto, Sand Key and Fred Howard parks through September. Requirements for the position include: American Red Cross certifications (or equivalents); three months of responsible lifeguard experience within the last five years; must be able to complete a 500-meter swim in under 10 minutes, a one-mile run in under eight minutes and execute a simulated open water rescue exercise successfully; must be at least 18 years old; must be able to work at any county beach park as schedule and staffing demands and able to work a variety of schedules, including compulsory work periods in special, emergency and/or disaster situations; and must possess a valid Florida driver license.
dealing with road closures, the city will receive all parking revenues. According to City Manager Jonathan Evans, the city stands to make over $20,000 in parking revenues, especially since they plan to charge a flat parking fee of $20, as opposed to previous years, when people parked at meters where it costs $2.50 an hour. Evans and Madeira Beach Mayor Maggi Black were in support of extending this agreement for a two-year time period, but other members of the Board disagreed, feeling it would irresponsible when so many of the logistical details were still up in the air. Last year, the festival boasted the largest in-person attendance of any event in Pinellas County, with crowds of over 200,000. The Seafood Festival is held every year in October.
By Sue Warren Positions are available for full-time or part-time seasonal employment, with pay starting at $13.42 per hour for new lifeguards and ranging to $15.17 per hour for senior-level lifeguards with an EMT certification. Visit pinellascounty.org/careers to apply. Indian Rocks Beach ranks high in vacant properties INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - According to a study released by ATTOM Data Solutions, Indian Rocks Beach’s zip code of 33785 has the ninth highest home vacancy rate among U.S. zip codes with 1,000 or more single-family homes and condos. Belleair Beach (33786) came in at number 10. According to the study, IRB had 1,106 vacant properties in the third quarter of 2018, which translates to 21.58 percent of homes. This number was down from 23.47 percent a year earlier. The zip code on the list with the highest number of vacancies belonged to Gary, IN.

In Brief County’s reclaimed water restrictions in place until June 30 PINELLAS COUNTY - Pinellas County’s seasonal reclaimed water restrictions will run through June 30. Due to supply fluctuation in both the north and south county reclaimed water systems, the restrictions schedule for reclaimed water users will be different for north and south county customers. Enforcement of watering restrictions is currently being intensified to encourage responsible use of reclaimed water. North County reclaimed water customers may only irrigate two days per week based on their property address, either on Tuesday and Saturday or Wednesday and Sunday. Watering is prohibited between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and the system will be shut down between those times on all days of operation. The system will also be completely shut down on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays as needed to replenish the supply. South County reclaimed water customers may irrigate three days per week based on their property address, either on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday or Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Watering is prohibited on Mondays and between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any other day. Customers should monitor the reclaimed water restrictions website for up-to-date information on shutdowns and schedule changes at pinellascounty.org/utilities/reclaim-irrigation.htm or call 727-464-4000.

DINING FEATURE
Breakfast Station: The best of both worlds
I
t seems like I am always trying to find a great place to go for breakfast. Or lunch, for that matter. JD’s Restaurant & Lounge in Indian Rocks Beach has long been a family favorite, but let’s be honest, sometimes it’s a struggle to get there before they stop serving breakfast at 11:00 a.m. Hey, I don’t judge you, you don’t judge me. Deal? I guess I should back up a little and explain my whole breakfast vs. lunch dilemma. In short, I can never figure out what I’m in the mood for. Breakfast. Lunch. Sweet. Salty. You get the drill. I don’t think I’m alone here. So imagine my delight--yes, delight!--when I learned that the Breakfast Station, just over the bridge in Seminole’s Oakhurst Plaza, serves breakfast AND lunch from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Every. Single. Day. Are these guys smart or what? The Breakfast Station has been there for a couple of years now, but I am ashamed to admit that I had no idea! It’s not the first time I’ve been late to the party, but the Breakfast Station has obviously built up a stable
of local devotees, one of which I am now happy to call myself. When I first walked through the door at the Breakfast Station, it felt like I was transported back to the days of yore, when my grandpa used to take me out to eat at his favorite diner on Saturday mornings. I could tell right away that the Breakfast Station is the sort of place where customers quickly become friends, and my dining companion and I were no exception. We were greeted right away by our server, who would prove to be exceptional at her craft. Talk about on the ball! She made some fantastic recommendations from the menu, and thank God she did, because one of her recommendations was the Cinnamon Swirl pancakes. I am not even kidding, they were delicious! When you go to Breakfast Station,
Breakfast Station 9342 Oakhurst Rd. Seminole 727-330-6094 and I insist that you do, you have to order the Cinnamon Swirl Pancakes. I mean, get something else if you want to but order the pancakes, too. You can thank me later!
My date and I shared the pancakes and the sounds coming from our table were practically R-rated. Just kidding, but they were so, so good. Now that I have devoted half of this dining feature to a pancake (so good!), let me move on to the rest of our meal. Our trip to Breakfast Station was, ironically, supposed to be for lunch, so we also ordered the Sante Fe salad (a garden salad
with tomato, fresh spinach, cucumbers, peppers, onions, egg and grilled chicken breast, all for just $7.59). It was tasty and fresh, and I think it is worth mentioning the homemade “caboose crispers” that come with all the salads. They were definitely yummy and a really nice addition. We also ordered Jim’s BLT, the Breakfast Station’s take on the simple yet classic bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, for only $6.99. It was delish, super fresh, and served with hot french fries. At this point, I really couldn’t have asked for anything more, except maybe a bed for my nappy time. The Breakfast Station features an array of breakfast and lunch items, including what I will be ordering on my next visit, the stuffed french toast, as well as burgers, wraps, quesadillas and various daily specials. I get the feeling you really can’t go wrong here. Our overall experience at Breakfast Station was superb, from the excellent service and atmosphere to the affordable prices. Coming from the beach, we sometimes get a little sticker shock when we dine out, but that’s definitely not the case at the Breakfast Station. Now go check it out for yourselves and tell them the crazy people from Beach Scene said hi! Bon appetit!

An affordable way to maximize the space in your place Making the most out of the space you have is important whether your house is small or large or somewhere in between. More Space Place is here to help.
“
I have a problem finding places to store things. I really need to get organized!” Does that sound like you at all? Organizing is about decluttering and arranging your home or office space in more efficient and beneficial ways. So stop storing everything in your garage or piling up your clothes and shoes and make a decision to get everything in order. It will make you feel so much better, I can promise you! More Space Place offers an extensive array of custom-built furniture specifically designed with your home and organizational needs in mind. They provide attractive, affordable and functional solutions that will help you get organized and create more space within your home without the hassle of a home remodel, a costly addition or an outside storage unit. More Space Place's numerous products include custom closets, home office furniture and organizational systems, Murphy wall beds, garage systems and kitchen organization solutions. Starting off as a single retail location in the early 1980's, More Space Place has grown to become a nationally recognized and
trusted company that continues to expand due to their high level of attentive customer service and quality organizational products. Today, the company has 28 nationwide stores that are locally owned and operated by community members. Clark Williams and Bob Schmidt are the owners of the three Tampa Bay area showrooms and Design Centers, conveniently located in Palm Harbor, St. Petersburg and Lutz. “We have seen some very innovative designs created when a client comes in with an idea and our designers work with them to make it a reality. It makes the business both fun and exciting,” said Williams. Custom furniture may sound expensive, but with today's technology and computerized woodworking equipment, that is no longer the case. Personalized furniture is now available at very affordable prices and offered in a full spectrum of attractive colors and finishes. Home organization has benefited greatly from this trend. In particular, custom closets are quickly becoming a standard option for homeowners. Improving the storage and organization
in a closet can add as much as three times the usual capacity of the old standard rail and shelf. Beyond the benefits of extra storage, custom closets look great and can add value to the home. More Space Place offers complimentary in-home design consultations as well as the Bay area showrooms where clients can check out the vast options of styles and finishes and see the quality of the products.
“When someone visits one of our three Showroom Design Centers, they'll find trained and experienced professionals who will introduce them to a full array of wall beds and cabinet options,” says Williams. “They will also find complete furniture collections for beautifully functional offices, media rooms, closets, garages, pantries, laundry rooms and so much more.”
