about.

Young people have something to say. Shopfront is a vehicle for creative young minds to make their voices heard. We would like to acknowledge the Bediagal and Kameygal people of the Eora nation who are the traditional custodians of the land on which Shopfront is built. We pay our respects to those elders past and present, and to all our brothers and sisters of our first nations people.

This is an inclusive space for all young people, a space where young people come together to express themselves. To learn, share and bring their imaginations to life. A space for celebrating the amazing ideas and creativity generated by young people and emerging artists. As a co-operative organisation, young people have a say in and lead everything we do. Through Shopfront, our young artists gain invaluable skills in artistic leadership and community building, shaping and becoming the next generation of creative content makers and community leaders. Our members make daring, adventurous and socially relevant work across Australia and internationally. Their combined voices are those of tomorrow’s leaders and are essential to Australia’s cultural and political landscape.

telling myths, telling lies

Five new works

A wax lyrical about a local Canberra myth, the reinvention of the myth, and who gets to dictate it. Performed by young and emerging artists, it is part talk-back radio and part live workshop. This semi-improvised performance goes haywire as both parties fight for control over the staging of the myth and its potential epic outcomes.

Shopfront presents five diverse new works created by some of Sydney’s most exciting emerging artists through the ArtsLab artist-in-residence program. Through a process of exploration, failure, and discovery comes a multifarious season split across two equally provocative weeks. Featuring a dance solo, a futuristic fashion parade, a new play, a live audiobook, a digital narrative. umami

In partnership with ATYP

Investigating how food brings the ones we love together and how conversations around the dinner table get us to the meat of the matter. Through the exploration of text, movement and local interviews conducted with community members, the Bodylines Ensemble will investigate the foods we like, dislike and why food emotionally connects to us all. The Ensemble will delve into discussions around the food they regularly eat and enjoy... and ultimately question themselves.

This explosive new work fuses movement, projection and sound with the personal stories of young adults. Shopfront’s Harness Ensemble joins forces with actors from ATYP to interrogate the worlds we find ourselves in. Merging performers with and without disability we hold a mirror to our preconceptions of what is appropriate, what is possible and what can be expected. There’s a dignity in the freedom to make mistakes. That’s where we learn the important stuff..

2017 Season Program

Shopfront takes over the St George region with performance, visual art, music and film. We’ll be covering the area in metre‑squared spaces which will be filled with the stories of St George brought to life through live and digital arts. Join us on a journey of exploration through this often overlooked corner of Sydney and experience St George’s diversity and vibrancy. Working with our local schools and community organisations, artists who live in the region and our Shopfront members, we’ll be making sure St George becomes a new go-to place for arts and culture.

In partnership with Lomandra School, Campbelltown

Looking at life at school playfully and more closely … this is a democratic process re-shaping school life, with art at its core.

Young people explore their connections to place through their own real and imagined stories. Partnering with Sydney Story Factory, young people will fill Campbelltown with their original stories. There’ll be performance, visual art and creative writing.

The project runs throughout the year, and you can join us in November 2017 to experience our large-scale public event.

Shopfront partners with local schools for an entire year to look at how art can enable us to see everything a little differently. Young people work with us to explore school space and their memories and connections within it. They hunt for school stories. They takeover the school with large events and installations which celebrate school life and look at what students want to change. They develop a functional, long-term art project which will have a sustainable impact on school life. We’ll even be developing our links between schools in Australia and Mexico through small-scale interventions. Join us in November and December as the projects are revealed. partner with us

Working in partnership with local youth, community, family and health organisations, Shopfront builds creative projects which use the arts to meet and explore local need, build confidence, imagination, and team-building.

The programs respond directly to local need, and are planned and built throughout the year. In 2017, programs include multi-faith work, socially‑engaged film making programs, and celebrating important days like International Women’s Day. We’ll keep you updated on these programs and everything you can do and see via our website, e-news and social media.
