By Sherri Gardner Howell Every year for the past four years, the fires have burned bright at Farragut High School to help bring attention and some needed funds to the problem of hunger in East Tennessee. The project, called Empty Bowls, is an example of art meeting need and a testament to what students can do. Empty Bowls is planned, implemented and staffed completely by the students in the FHS National Art Honor Society. It takes place this year at 6 p.m. Monday, March 9, at Einstein Bros. Bagels, 11693 Parkside Drive in Turkey Creek. Guests who have purchased $15 tickets in advance at the high school can choose a handcrafted

By Wendy Smith In spite of a crowd of Sweet Briar residents who came to Town Hall in opposition, the Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a rezoning that will result in commercial development adjacent to their subdivision. It was the second reading of a zoning amendment that changes the zoning of a two-acre Parkside Drive parcel from office and buffer to commercial and buffer. Before it was appealed to the FBMA, the rezoning was unanimously denied by the Municipal Planning Commission. Sweet Briar residents cooperated with town staff and leadership during the development of Turkey Creek shopping center,
year’s chair, and it is her third year to work on Empty Bowls. She says she loves everything about the project, especially making the bowls and the fact that the whole event is student-led. “As a group, the National Art Honor Society wants members who can develop their artistic style
through helping other people,” says Vagott. “In addition to Empty Bowls, we help with events at the primary school and create artwork for charity auctions. For Empty Bowls, we start three or four months in advance with the To page A-3

and because of that cooperation, they were assured that adjacent Parkside Drive property would be zoned for offices, said resident John Hoffman. There was no written agreement, but the zoning was the result of the agreement, he said. That zoning was recently changed to allow TVA Employees’ Credit Union and Panda Express to be developed on another adjacent parcel. The smell and noise from Panda Express have impacted property values in Sweet Briar, said resident Deborah Raines. Her neighbors were never notified of that zoning change, and if they had been, they would’ve fought it, she said. Developer Jim Nixon, who
plans to purchase the property on behalf of Farragut Land Partners, told the FBMA at its Feb. 12 meeting that he hopes to put a restaurant there. While he has assured neighbors that he will improve the buffer between the development and the neighborhood, Raines expressed concern that she’d listen to a drive-thru speaker all day. “What we see here is that the people who are getting asked to make a sacrifice are getting none of the benefit,” she said. Attorney Michael Kelley, who represents Nixon, said the rezoning would be consistent with the town’s long-range plan and the board’s previous decision to rezone the Panda Express property. Rotary barbecue cook-off headed to World’s Fair Park By Anne Hart Not since the 1980s has Knoxville seen an event like the one set for the World’s Fair Park in late May. If you’re a lover of barbecue, you might want to start dieting right now because QueFest, the 2015 Tennessee State Barbecue Championship, is going to be an opportunity to nibble your way to pork paradise. On May 29 and 30, the heavenly aroma of barbecue will waft over the park as it did when the events called “Riverfest” dotted the site for a few years after the fair closed, when local groups competed for the best barbecue in town.
