BUZZ UT prof is first Carnegie winner
For the first time, a UT professor has received a major Carnegie fellowship. Nathan J. Kelly, associate professor of political science, has been named a 2017 Andrew Carnegie Research Fellow. Kelly is one of 35 scholars nationwide who will receive up to $200,000 from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to complete a book or major study. Kelly will use the award to complete his book, “America’s Inequality Trap.� Kelly’s research shows that rising economic inequality reduces the prospect of major reforms and policy changes within U.S. political institutions.

a hit at Grace Christian Academy By Nancy Anderson Grace Christian Academy’s Middle School Theater Department performed “The adventures of Tom Sawyer� to an enthusiastic crowd at Grace Baptist Church on Thursday, April 4. The play, directed by drama instructor Tonya Wilson and acted by sixth-, seventh- and eighthgraders, centers on a week in the life of the irascible and ever charming Tom Sawyer. The play, adapted from the book by Mark Twain, adhered to many aspects of the classic tale. Tom Sawyer is punished for skipping school and fighting by having to paint the fence on a Saturday, but Sawyer charms all his friends into doing the task for him. He courts and finally wins the affection of Becky Thatcher after selflessly taking the blame for Thatcher destroying a book. The excitement heightens when Sawyer and his pal Huck Finn happen to be in the graveyard late

one night and see Injun Jo murder Doc Robinson then set up the hapless Muff Potter to take the blame. Fearing Injun Joe, Sawyer and Finn take off down the river, but Sawyer soon rues the decision and returns to town just in time for his own funeral. In the end, Sawyer testifies that he saw Injun Joe commit the murder. Injun Joe escapes and Sawyer then hints at a sequel, saying “Hunting for Injun Joe’s gold is an adventure for another day.� Of the production that was five months in the making, Wilson said the biggest challenge was rehearsal time, which was from 7:15 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. every day. Karns High teachers honored by church By Nancy Anderson
Fellowship Church Pellissippi honored 85 teachers plus principal Brad Corum at a special teacher appreciation celebration held at Karns High School on Sunday, April 30. The church calls the occasional fifth Sunday of the month “Outside the Box Sunday� and uses that time for community service rather than regular church service, which is held in the auditorium of Karns High School. “We normally use ‘Outside the Box Sunday’ for community service,� said associate pastor Brad Raby. “We might go to an area nursing home or homeless shelter and help out in any way we can, but this time we wanted
to honor the teachers at Karns High School with a celebration for everything they do to help mold the next generation. We have a question and answer session with principal Brad Corum and a video featuring the teachers of the year Cori Hackworth, Tucker Jackson, Llona Ray and Phillip Beeler followed by a catered luncheon. “Joshua Wilson, a carpenter in our congregation, hand-made personalized wall plaques from recycled barn wood from right here in Karns for each teacher at Karns High School.
