Slow-Cooked Beef Stew Makes An Ideal Cold Weather Comfort Food

The term “comfort food” can be used in reference to a host of dishes. Some see Mom’s homecooking as the ultimate comfort food, while others may insist hearty dishes that fill the belly are the only true comfort foods.

Regardless of one’s definition of comfort food, one characteristic many might agree about is that foods must provide more than mere sustenance to qualify for entry into this wide-ranging category. Beef stew certainly fits that criteria, as many feel nothing is more comforting on a cold winter day than a warm bowl of slow-cooked stew. As winter settles in, those looking for some slow-cooked comfort can try this recipe for “Crockpot Beef Stew With Potatoes and Peas” from Lines+Angles.

CROCKPOT BEEF STEW WITH POTATOES& PEAS

Makes 6 servings

2 pounds boneless stew beef

1 teaspoon coarse salt

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1⁄3 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped

2 celery ribs, rinsed, trimmed and sliced

2 cloves of garlic, peeled and pressed

2 cups baby carrots, sliced

6 small new potatoes, rinsed and cut into bite-sized pieces

6 ounces tomato paste

4 cups beef broth

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon dried parsley

2 cups frozen peas

1. Rinse the beef under cold running water and pat completely dry with paper towels. Using a sharp knife, cut the beef into generous bite-size pieces.

2. Combine the salt, pepper and flour. Place the cubed beef in a large resealable plastic storage bag. Add the seasoned flour and shake to thoroughly coat the beef with flour.

3. Heat the oil in a heavy bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the flour-coated beef and brown on all sides.

4. Place browned beef in the crock pot. Add onions, celery, garlic, carrots, potatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and parsley.

5. Cook on low for 10 hours or on high for 6 to 7 hours. About 30 minutes before serving, add the frozen peas, cover and continue cooking for an additional 30 minutes.

6. Ladle stew into individual serving bowls and serve. Tip: Cooking time may vary depending on age and size of crockpot.

HEALTHY WAYS TO COPE WITH STRESS

Stressful experiences are a part of life, and the physiological responses that occur in response to these challenges are natural tools humans developed as survival mechanisms. People learn and grow as they deal with positive stressful occurrences, such as when speaking in public or taking a test. But when stressors cannot be avoided or prove chronic, the body’s response to stress can take a toll on a person’s mental and physical well-being.

The COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, an uptick in strong storms and subsequent weather-related disasters, and global conflicts have proven stressful for people around the world. According to a report from the American Psychological Association titled “Stress in America 2023: A Nation Recovering from Collective Trauma,” the long-term stress sustained since early 2020 has had a significant impact on well-being, as evidenced by an increase in chronic illnesses. The report found people between the ages of 35 and 44 have been particularly affected. Long-term stress poses many health risks, including wear and tear on the immune system and an increase in worry, anxiety and irritability. Some people turn to drugs or alcohol to combat stress, but there are healthy options. The following are better ways to cope with stress.

• Reduce the number of stressors. It is not possible to remove all of the stress of life, but people can try to reduce some forms of stress. Think about sharing some responsibilities or asking for help. If a person is causing you stress, then distance yourself from this person as much as possible. Work is a major source of stress for many people. Finding a new job or cutting back on tasks could help.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Deadline: 20th of each preceding month. Distributed by the 1st week of each month.

Ad Design: Included in the cost of ad. No extra charge. Terms: Ads from new agencies and first-time advertisers require full payment in advance. All others on receipt of invoice.

Guaranteed Position: An additional 10% of ad space cost, when more than one business request same location.

Policies: All advertising is subject to publisher’s approval and agreement by the advertiser to indemnify and protect the publisher from loss on claims or suites based upon the subject matter of such advertisements.

• Get quality sleep. Prioritize sleeping better and longer. Fatigue can exacerbate the ability to deal with even minor stressors, leaving you more irritable and edgy. Most adults require between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, so adjust your schedule to achieve this.

• Plan for daily exercise. The APA says brisk movement improves sleep and can combat stress. In one study titled “Relationships between Leisure Time Physical Activity and Perceived Stress,” first published in 1996, researchers found that working adults who engaged in moderate physical activity had half the perceived stress when compared to working adults who did not participate. A 30-minute session each day can work wonders.

continued on next page...

• Engage in pleasurable activities. It’s easy to drop fun things from the schedule when stress is high. But the Cleveland Clinic advises making time for pleasurable things as a means to combatting stress. Laughter and humor can go a long way towards reducing stressful feelings, so a night out at a comedy show or watching a funny movie can help.

• Improve your diet. Well-nourished bodies can handle stressors, illnesses and life in general much easier. Aim for a well-balanced diet that is low in processed foods and sugar. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and nicotine, as each can worsen stress in the long run, according to Sutter Health.

Stress is a natural part of life. When stress becomes too much to take, individuals can cope in various healthy ways.

BINGO: A VERSATILE GAME FOR ANY OCCASION

An estimated $90 million is spent on bingo games each week in North America. What began as a humble county fair game using numbered discs and beans to mark cards has expanded to be one of the more beloved games — and fundraisers — of all time. Bingo attracts people of all ages. Bingo is usually won by compiling a pattern of numbers covered on a bingo card, typically vertically, horizontally or diagonally. However, alternative ways of playing bingo have been introduced to increase the excitement and chances of winning. By modifying game play, everyone from teachers to students to party hosts to entertainment coordinators can expand bingo’s versatility.

In the classroom. Teachers can use the game of bingo in their classrooms as an entertaining way to engage students. Bingo cards can be marked with just about any image or word to coincide with lessons. World Leader Bingo, for example, requires students to recognize and cover various world leader’s faces. Verb Conjugation Bingo can help foreign language students familiarize themselves with the various conjugates of common verbs. Teachers also can encourage students to come up with their own versions of bingo that they can play with fellow classmates and use during study sessions.

At parties Bingo is a fun way to entertain guests at various events, such as bridal showers, birthday parties or anniversary parties. While anyone can make his or her own bingo card grid, plenty of pre-made templates are available online. At parties, when the guest of honor opens gifts, party guests can mark off those items on their cards. Not only does the game keep guests engaged in the gift-opening process, but it also presents a way to give them trinkets and other prizes without guests having to do too much. Depending on the audience, modify the bingo cards according to age and skill level. Young children may enjoy a birthday game of bingo with pictures printed on the cards instead of words.

In the workplace Employers often seek out ways to boost employee morale, and entertaining games and small gifts are one way to do just that. Raffle off baskets and other prizes while using bingo to lighten up the work atmosphere and keep employees happy. Dedicate one day each week for bingo play toward the end of the workday when everyone is winding down. Ask employees to gather at a central location or let them play at their desks, with numbers called over the office PA system. The first person to reach bingo must call out and have his or her card verified. Prizes can include a free day off from work, sports tickets or gift cards to a restaurant.

Bingo has been entertaining players since its inception in 1929. Its versatility makes it a winner in any number of settings and applications.

A CALL TO LISTEN TO

Hebrews 12:14-28

Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal. You know that afterward, when he wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears.

You have not come to a physical mountain, to a place of flaming fire, darkness, gloom, and whirlwind, as the Israelites did at Mount Sinai. For they heard an awesome trumpet blast and a voice so terrible that they begged God to stop speaking. They staggered back under God’s command: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.” Moses himself was so frightened at the sight that he said, “I am terrified and trembling.”

No, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to countless thoursands of angels in a joyful gathering. You have come to the assembly of God’s firstborn children whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God himself, who is the judge over all things. You have come to the spirits of the righteous ones in heaven who have now been made perfect. You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks of forgivenss instead of crying out for vengeance like the blood of Abel.

Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the peoople of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven! When God spoke from Mount Sinai his voice shook the earth, but now he makes another promise. Once again I will shake not only the earth but the heavens also. This means that all of creation will be shaken and removed, so that only unshakable things will remain.

Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe. For our God is a devouring fire.

Hebrews 13:15 —Therefore, let us offer through Jesus, a continual sacrifice of praise to God, procliaming our allegiance to his name.
