TWO GUYS & A GAL PROVIDING YUMMY EATS IN THE COVE The ice cream you know and love, Bootleg, is back and better than ever. Bootleg’s store on 11/15 in the Cove was originally opened by Perry County’s own Jeff Trout and his family, who operate a large dairy in Blain, PA. Jeff’s dream of providing a terrific, creamy ice cream took off and exceeded his expectations, but demand of his time soon overwhelmed him, and he knew if the Bootleg ice cream brand was to continue to grow, he would need a little help. Ed Tietje, after serving Duncannon and Perry County for 29 years along with his bride Laura and trusty sheltie, readily stepped up. With Ed’s business expertise, his community connections, and his long-held dream of opening an ice cream shop of his own, this was the perfect combination to continue to deliver quality ice cream to the town and surrounding area. Ed reopened the Bootleg storefront as Pap’s Sweet n Treats in April 2021 and now offers several varieties of Bootleg flavors as well as other brands, along with ice cream pies and cakes, and locally-made baked goods. Ed hired Chandra Houseman as his pastry chef and does she make some wonderful mouth watering treats. They get together and talk about what wonderful treats they can create for their customers; amazing brownies and cinnamon buns, pumpkin rolls, pies. Chandra loves to bake and she is ready to bake all your Holiday goodies as well. You can stop by Pap’s Sweets n Treats and place your order or you can give her a call yourself at 717-585-7164. Anyone who knows Ed, knows he thinks big and he was also thinking how can he provide a variety of foods to go along with his special treats —enter Don McKee. Don has continued on page 22...

Tales from Perry County Storytellers... So often today when I ask “are you from Perry County and would you like to learn more about Perry County history, I get the answer “my Grandpap or Grandma lived here and told me lots of stories”, as if that is all there is to know. More than sixty folks who grew up in Perry County have shared their stories in Cherished Memories. They are heartfelt, unedited, and in some cases straight from their mouths as I interviewed and wrote their approved stories. Learning from every story regardless of how short or long, I am so proud to publish them in Cherished Memories for the world to read and to create a lasting keepsake for Perry County’s future generations. I’ll share the storytellers and tidbits in Cherished Memories. Chuck Lamoreaux, originally from Wila, was the first person to respond to my request for “Growing up Perry County” stories. Jim Kain, Carl Tressler and Larry Reisinger, members of the “Wila Tech” gang, joined Chuck. Bill and Crista Lyons, Cisna Run, shared about their century farm, and transcribed Jeremiah Lyons WWl diary. They describe cows floating through the fields. Mercy Sakes! Those cows certainly could have used one of Larry Little’s, of Marysville, homemade rafts or submarines. Larry and Jim McConnell’s livin’ in Fowler Hollow comes to life “just like their dynamiting and rebuilding barns in western Perry County”, through the interview by Bill and Crista Lyons. Famous for homemade ice cream, they were kind enough to share the recipe. Carol Gabel Ulsh, from Newport, and Lynn McMillen, from Ickesburg area, participated in 4-H by showing their animals at the annual 4-H Roundups. Sue Reisinger Binger, Polly McMillen Eby and Deb Reisinger Nyce, all from the Ickesburg area, tell about their farm chores. One of them burned down the outhouse, served up milkshakes, and disliked school lunches! Jane Neely Stambaugh, another farm girl from outside Loysville, ended up with black walnut stained hands till the holidays. Jane Smith Dobbs, of Stoney Point, loved raising pens of chickens at the base of the Conocheague Mountain. Linda Dum Rock “Rocky”, of Landisburg area, gave up her milking stool to Governor Lawrence, only to have him topple over as he attempted milking a Farm Show cow. Linda Martin Gilmore relates the story of the night the barn burned at Cisna Run. Another Elliottsburg area farm girl, Dorothy “Dee” Shiffer Wesner, relates the last year of the Elliottsburg one-room school house. Craig Wallis “Diamond” never tried to make Liverpool disappear in his magic acts, as he shares his upbringing all over the world. Myrtle Holman, age 95, grew up in Centerville, outside of Liverpool, while her niece Julie Shumaker Harvey was a townie. Noted Liverpool historian, Patty Campbell reflected on growing up in the 1950s/1960s. One of them tipped “two-seaters” as Halloween pranks! Jim Roush, of Millerstown, played pick-up games of baseball, while Jane Cameron Simonton, walked about town crunching barrel pickles. Jane Hoffman Roush wanted to graduate from Greenwood High School, so her mother drove her daily from Ickesburg to Millerstown, after they opened Hoffman’s Store. Pat Kerr Brodisch lived on the outskirts of Millerstown and learned the construction trade from her father. Cathy Urich Gilbert and Terry Urich tell about the loafers at their family store “Urich’s” in Mannsville. Vicky Rudy Johnson grew up on Erly Road not too far away. Pleasant Valley siblings Pat Dunkleberger Kretzing, William Dunkleberger and Flo Dunkleberger Loy loved visiting their grandparents, Scott and Cora Bender, at the base of Limestone Ridge. “Hanging out in Bloomfield” as told by Gary Eby is very different from Fran Owen, who snatched pesky bugs from the fields earning money to attend the Bloomfield Firemen’s Carnival. Donna Rudy Neely from Little Germany and Lorie Bolden Goss, from outside Duncannon, tramped through fields and woods searching for wild berries. However, Heather Little Reed preferred playing in the creek at Meadow Grove Road. But it was the Susquehanna River north of Duncannon, that called to Jeannie Maguire, Fred Noye, and Bradley Halter, who lived in New Buffalo. They recant stories of swimming, canoeing and escaping ice jams, Barb Stokes, of Marysville, liked to chat up the local storekeepers, as did Galene Guiles Weller in Loysville. Recalling businesses in the western end of Loysville was Dean Robinson owner of Robinson’s Store. November, 2021

Neighboring Landisburg’s history is garnered from Mary Lightner’s diary by Kathy Henry Hughes, along with helping out in her mother’s Apparel and Gift Shop. Connie Wilt Lupp and Sue Wilt McElhiney were responsible for sorting the soda bottle returns at Wilt’s Self Service, Landisburg. Shirley Burd Reisinger, from “Swamp Poodle”, saved the bottle cap from her first bottle of Pepsi. Kistler and Landisburg were once homes to Gay Russ Irwin. Steve Metzger, Oliver Township, had the honor of interviewing his folks, Judy and Ray, who shared their early years in Bloomfield, Duncannon and Newport. The car dealerships, catalog stores, and manufacturing in Newport are important in this family’s history. The notorious “bungalow town” of Perdix comes to life through the story telling of Franklin Delano Reidinger, whose family donated the land for the Perdix Fire House and Community Park. They also ran a thriving store and dance hall, where Franklin’s mother crafted and bottled homemade sodas. Amity Hall Inn and Restaurant is described by Judy LePere Armstrong, who lived on the campus of Carson Long Military Institute in New Bloomfield. She enjoyed playing with food and knives, as well as serving customers in Amity Hall. Deidre Neidigh Hinkle and Christine Cressler Morrow, from Newport, would dance the night away, as did Ginnie Jones Clark, of Duncannon. I’m sure Ginnie met a lot of people from Duncannon and Marysville, but did she know their real names? Harriet Magee, Duncannon, solves that mystery with an extensive list of nicknames. Ever wonder if veterans of the Spanish American War were in your family tree. James McAteer, former Perry Countian, has done extensive research on the subject and shared it in Cherished Memories. Jeff Dobbs, Loysville, honors his father, Leo, by reciting the challenges of serving in WWll. Co-Founder of The Perry Historians, Jerry Clouse eagerly shared his youthful treks into Henry’s Valley. “Lan’s sake!”per Steve Hower, Elliottsburg, upon learning Penny Rudy Nicholl, Loysville, discovered Grandpap Nicholl’s glass eye in Granny’s treadle sewing machine. “And so it is” – Cherished Memories. Compiled by Debra Kay “Debby” Noye.
