Everlane Introducing radical transparency

2.

Everlane is an American fashion e-retailer for men and women, who openly share on their website the cost for each product from materials, hardware, labour, duties and transport; making it all transparent; even showing their mark-up. If you are a lover of basics such as T-shirts, jumpers, pants, shirts and accessories but don’t want to pay ridiculous prices you will love Everlane. Before writing this article, I bought a few pieces for myself because it did cross my mind that these inexpensive products couldn’t be of high quality. I’m talking $135 for Wool Flannel pants, $88 for woollen jumpers and only $15 for cotton T’s. I ordered a pair of pants, jumper, tracky pants, hoodie and 2 white T’s; all things I will flog throughout winter.

14

My big box arrived about 10 days later, I tried everything on and the quality is top notch the only thing I found was that the pants were way too long and I had to get them taken up. The tracky pants and hoodie have been wash n’ wear, so comfy, actually thinking of buying them in other colours. I never understood or could justify spending BIG BUCKS on basic pieces, seriously $120 for a T-shirt? So, $15 for a T, a great quality T is a cracker find. It can be overwhelming with all the choices we have when it comes to fashion now that we have shopping at our fingertips. Finding Everlane feels like a lottery win, basics at amazing prices without compromising on quality; it’s now my first choice for hubby and I.

Here’s what I bought *note all prices are in US dollars*

1. Premium Wool Flannel Pant - True Cost $57, Everlane $135, Traditional retail $285 The Luxe Wool Square Turtleneck - True Cost $36, Everlane $88, Traditional retail $180 2. The cotton V T - True cost $8, Everlane $15, Traditional retail $45 3. The classic French terry hoodie - True cost $20, Everlane $48, Traditional retail $100 The classic French terry track pant - True cost $22, Everlane $55, Traditional retail $110 3.

. pooch report

Time for my own bed WRITTEN BY MAUI SHEERAN We’ve been lucky here in Sydney; our Autumn days have been warm and sunny but boy the nights are getting cold.

I’m the first to admit I am spoilt, I have a bed in just about every room, blankets and more toys than you could imagine. Even though I have my own bed/beds and blankets I love squishing up in between mum and dad on the lounge and they don’t ask me to move even though I know they are uncomfortable. They love me so much and I love them. When they go to bed they make sure I’m tucked in and warm but at around 2 o’clock in the morning I jump up on the bed and worm my way up in between them and I hog the blanket. I think it’s starting to wear a bit thin but their quilt is so soft and snuggly. Poor dad isn’t getting a good sleep and mum, well she’s not a morning person and I’m not helping. I started looking online for a solution and found this dog sleeping bag by Cloud7, I pointed it out to mum and she has agreed to buy me one. For the large bed, it is $290 but

you can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep, right? I know it’s ordered and on its way so I’ll keep you posted In the meantime, you should check out www.lavishtails. com.au they have some really cool stuff. I have my eye on a few more things but don’t want to push my luck. I think that Mum got me the Cloud7 waterproof coat too for when I’m at Rugby training with dad, paws crossed.

YOU CAN’T PUT A PRICE ON A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP, RIGHT?

Wow, this blew my mind and I have better ways of spending $1036 than throwing it in the bin. I bought the exact same veges and put half in the swag and half just in the fridge. Love

WHAT MONEY PROFILE ARE YOU? The money profile is a fun and quick way to determine what motivates you to make and spend money. Suncorp have partnered with a behavioural expert and utilised recent research to develop the Money Profile survey.

Freedom

Each Money Profile is characterised by specific emotional meaning that we attach to money and finances. I’ve completed the survey and it was no surprise after I read my profile that I am the LOVE profile. Those close to me know I’m always generous with gifts, I get so much joy from giving and I do love a bit of retail therapy. I’ve always said a good pair of shoes fixes everything.

Security

TAKE THE QUIZ HERE

Power

26

Love For people with in the love profile, money is representative of emotion and affection; it can be used to buy loyalty, prove one’s commitment and express love or generosity. The love profile is the spender among the Money Profiles. Spending money makes them happy, and is often a recreational pastime. They tend to engage in ‘retail therapy’ to relieve anxiety, boredom, disappointments and feeling down or angry.

Freedom For people with a freedom profile, money represents autonomy – freedom from as well as freedom to. It provides the opportunity to pursue whims and interests, freeing them from daily routines and restrictions. People with a freedom profile tend to view money as a tool to free themselves from obligations and provide a sense of adventure. For this profile, the purpose of money is to feel self-sufficient and free to do what they want in life. To have choices rather than feel trapped.

Security For those with a security profile, money is a serious topic that is worth focusing on and talking about. They tend to view money as a security blanket, ensuring they sleep easier at night knowing that they and their family are protected for the future. They are more likely to get greater satisfaction from saving rather than spending money. People with a security profile are across the latest tools and services, so it’s no surprise they like to be firmly in control

Power Those with a power profile tends to view money as a reflection of their drive and ambition. They put pressure on themselves to achieve the goals they set themselves, and are very self-critical if they fall short. To them, money enables success (through tools and services that their money buys) and as a result, affords them success and recognition for their efforts. It can reflect their accomplishments or aspirations, and make them feel successful.

Vanuatu stole part of our hearts Winter has just arrived and I’m already daydreaming of tropical destinations, even if it is only for a few days. It’s always around this time of year that Mike and I feel we need to recharge the batteries to tackle the rest of the year. If this sounds like you then Vanuatu is your answer. Vanuatu never crossed our minds as a destination for a holiday. I think we always thought that it was only a cruise ship destination, we were wrong. By the end of the 4 days

Vanuatu stole a bit of our hearts and we can’t wait to get back. It’s the perfect destination for a long weekend, it’s only a 3 ½ hour flight from Sydney and they are on the same time zone. While in Vanuatu we stayed at the adults only Breakas Beach resort. Mike and I have done lots of family holidays with the kids when they were younger now they are all grown up it’s time to have our honeymoon(s) all over again. We love kids but we also love ‘adults only’ accommodation too.’

Our little beach bungalow was simple yet perfect. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We were welcomed with flowers and cocktails. A perfect start to our empty nesters vacay. Mike and I aren’t that big on tours we love exploring; getting lost is half the fun. We hired a mini moke and drove around the island, you can do this in a day. The moke was hilarious; as we drove through each village we were like rock stars, we had to slow down as the kids

were chasing us to give us a high fives. You would be driving along palm tree filled roads and a spot of fluorescent blue would catch the corner of your eye, you had to stop. Some of the beaches we found were breathtaking with only the local villagers there. You did have to pay a few dollars (this goes to the village) to enter but worth it. Eton and Esacape beach were two of our favourites. Soaking up the sun and watching the local kids play while the whole extended family were preparing lunch or singing, it was so beautiful to watch.

29

TRAVEL TIP A MINI MOKE IS THE PERFECT WAY TO EXPLORE THE ISLAND

ADVE

We decided to keep the car for the rest of our time in Vila. We found a couple of popular tourist spots: The Blue Lagoon swimming hole, it was crowded but beautiful, worth visiting. ▪ Hideaway is a little too touristy for us but good for a giggle and amazing for snorkelling. It’s a short ferry ride, it has a restaurant on the beach, an underwater post office which you can post mail from, beautiful sea life and colourful coral. Of a night make sure you dine at some of the restaurants in town, there are quite a few choices. I was told before we left for our trip that we must try the Coconut Crabs, at first, I thought they meant crab cooked in coconut milk, they were talking about the species ‘coconut crab’ (they eat coconuts, hence their name) but after reading an article that they are becoming extinct I couldn’t bring myself to try one. I’ll leave that decision to you.

THE FLOWER MARKETS MADE MY HEART SING

The local markets are also a must. Full of colour. Fresh fruit and vegetables and flowers that will take your breath away. The sweet smell of the local fresh produce was delicious, you must try the pineapples. There’s not much to buy in Port Vila but next to the markets are locals showing their handicrafts. I always buy local products as a memento of our travels. We did manage to buy some beautiful timber carvings and being the basket collector that I am bought 3 baskets that I have hanging on my wall at home.

On our last day, we asked the kitchen at Breakas if they could put a picnic basket together for us so we could return to our special little beach, it was a great way to end our trip.

An easy 20 minute walk through beautiful lush forests. When you get to the top the most magnificent waterfall and swimming holes. I would do this again in a heartbeat.

A must is the Mele Cascades.

So, if you’re looking for the perfect little getaway and only have a few days we could not recommend Vanuatu enough. It really did steal a little piece of our hearts. Just over a 3-hour flight from Sydney, perfect for a long weekend. We had a little taste of this beautiful place and can’t wait to go back and discover more, there is so much more to see. We now know why Vanuatu has been named one of the happiest places on the planet.
