Ephrata High School

Desiree Martin

Senior

Getting into college may seem like an ordinary task, but to Desiree Martin, it is a major accomplishment.

Now accepted into seven colleges, Martin says, “Before applying, I was worried I wasn’t going to get accepted into some schools.” After this achievement, Martin admits she feels “very accomplished” because her “hard work has finally paid off.”

Daughter of Brian Martin Sr. and Cleante Zimmerman, Desiree Martin participates in many different school activities such as German National Honors Society, where she is president, Student Council, National Honors Society, Science National Honors, Society Link Crew, and the Mounts Buddy Program. With all of these activities, it is not surprising that Martin’s favorite part of school is the social aspect. She says, “I enjoy interacting with my peers and working on group projects.”

As standing president of German National Honors Society, Martin is an avid member of Ephrata’s German language programs. She says that AP German is her favorite class for many different reasons. She mentions that she feels like she is always learning: “Every day, I learn something new in that class. I enjoy the cultural comparison between the U.S. and Germany.” Another reason Martin likes her German class is because she is always laughing and having fun.

Outside of her German studies, Martin enjoys weightlifting, collecting vinyl, traveling and occasionally drawing.

After high school, Martin plans on attending university to major in biochemistry. She is considering many colleges such as University of Pittsburgh, Drexel University, George Washington University, and University of Connecticut.

Even with all the successful role models in her career path, Martin admires her mom the most. Martin says, “She’s a hardworking and generous woman that has taught me a lot. She’s one of the most positive role models I have in my life, and I appreciate the sacrifices she’s made for me and my brothers.”

Madison Bills

7th Grade

Madison Bills is a fun, talkative, bubbly, responsible, and quirky 7th grader at Lititz Area Mennonite School. Madison likes LAMS because it feels like a safe environment because the people and teachers are kind and caring. Her favorite subject in school is social studies because the teacher is fun and because when you start learning a topic, you work with it until you know it well, and then you move on.

At school, Madison participates in basketball, the worship team, and track. She won the MVP award in basketball and got 2nd place in the 400-meter dash at a track meet. She plays soccer for the PMG soccer league.

Madison’s hobbies are basketball, singing, and soccer. The best accomplishment in her life so far is getting 1st place in the Hershey Cup with her soccer team. She is planning to go to Warwick for high school.

After high school, Madison wants to get a job doing something with hair styling. Her role models are her parents and her Aunt Roxanne. Madison attends Grace Church, Lititz where she helps with childcare for the little kids.

Her favorite verse is Psalm 46:5: “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”

Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck

By: e Late C. Richard Beam

A collection of “Deitsch Eck” columns from past issues of e Shopping News honoring the late C. Richard Beam.

(Continued From Page 8A) for a section where large quantities of potatoes were formerly grown.

Es Katze Miehl - the location of an early grist mill on the Allegheny Creek. It is no longer in operation, however, the name survives.

Es Drucke Wattshaus - an old hostelry in Fivepointville, Brecknock Township, Lancaster County. In the dialect, Am Druckene is still used to designate what is termed “Fivepointville” in English. (In the winter of 1985, this ancient building was converted into a restaurant.)

How Are Mom & Dad Doing?

Die Rot Kuh - An old name for a section in Brecknock Township in Lancaster County, where in the past there was a thriving hotel and a hamlet named “Red Run.” I had a sweetheart there in the long ago. (Bischli-Gnippli was born in that former hotel building on February 15, 1925.)

On May 27, 1982, our dear nonagenarian friend, Paul B. Horning of Bradenton, Florida, compiled and mailed to us this list of 26 dialect place names with which he is well acquainted. He wrote at that time: “All of these places are dear to my heart, and I can well remember that I met many people years ago, who were justly proud to say that they lived at or near these various places.”

This week our Deitscher Schtrohhut is lifted in salute to “Papa” Horning for recalling these ancient dialect place names and to all those who call these places home!

S.O.S.

LIEWER LESER!!! - We again encourage you to send us a list of place names in the dialect (together with their English counterpart) and their location of which you have heard or know of from personal experience.

We have the impression that Dutch place names are more numerous in the eastern settlements than in the Midwest, possibly due to the fact that in the East the Dutch were among the earliest settlers. Be that as it may, every effort should be made to record and preserve ALL Dutch place names, whether eastern or western. Please share with us any Dutch place name you recall - even if it’s only one.
