Watch and Pray
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Mark 14:38
“Keep watching and praying so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”
Our Lord is now in Gethsemane and certainly His most distressing and challenging time, preparing Himself for the cross. This is His hour of agony as the crucifixion is at hand. We see the Lord watching and praying, He commanded the disciples to do the same. His temptation would be to turn from the cross as He prayed “take this cup from me; nevertheless not what I will, but what You will.” (Mark 14:36) Truly this is one great purpose of prayer; enablement and resolve to do the will of God no matter the cost
The emanate temptation the disciples were about to face was to deny their Lord. At this point, fear of the Jews would prove to be an overwhelming influence.
Peter just proclaimed that he would never deny the Lord but would die first.
This night would be the proving ground for Peter’s commitment; and he would deny the Lord three times. Here our Lord gives two commands that enable victory for every kind of temptation; watch and pray. First we should watch. There are several associated concepts and commands in the Bible that are all very similar…be sober, be vigilant, be alert. These admonitions are prevalent in scripture, (1st Peter 5:8) explains why; “Be sober, be on the alert, your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” We have a dreadful enemy who will stop at nothing to destroy us and any good work God wants to do in and through our life. We need to realize that we are in a battle, even hand to hand combat at times, with the forces of evil.
The Bible says, “be not conformed to the world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
(Romans 12:12) We need to be alert, and watch or slowly we will conform to the world and its views on life instead of God’s worldview. Slowly, little by little, we slip comfortably into the world and its philosophies if we are not vigilant and on the alert. This temptation may well be the most deadly of all because it can influence all of our life and we become as the church of Laodicea; lukewarm and good for nothing.
In Hebrews 2:1, we are instructed to, “Pay careful
