That is important because it is one of the biggest days of their lives.” McColly explains that Leto has been responsible for helping build Innsbrook’s current team. “I admire the autonomy of our management team, namely Jim Formas our Golf Pro, Marko Avorio the Executive Chef, Joel Sanders our Grounds Superintendent and Carmen Regalado our Comptroller. with the members and the planning and execution of special events and all aspects of banquets. “The friends you make become an extension of your family. That is part of the allure of a country club. The challenge, Leto says, is keeping the exclusivity of a private club for the members while continuing to grow and cultivating a banquet department that is open to the public. Leto said her proudest accomplishments at Innsbrook include
the smooth day to day running of the clubhouse, especially when the members are fully engaged and benefitting from all the amenities that the club has to offer. Secondly, Leto said, starting with the first wedding back in 2006, she developed the banquet department/ special events and with McColly’s blessing, opened the banquet facilities to the public. “We have watched the event business grow very successfully over the years,” Leto says. “Mr. McColly also renovated the northwest end of the clubhouse to incorporate three additional meeting rooms.” Future plans include installing a Bocce Ball court within the year, she said. “We want to continue to enhance the holiday events such as the Halloween party for the kids, and the Mother’s Day and Easter buffets,” Leto says, “Not to mention, our pool mimics a mini water park. Each year, we continue to grow and draw new members. Our central location has been very advantageous in that regard.” Leto grew up and was educated in Belfast, Northern Ireland. “I came to America and started my career in the hospitality industry and here I am 30 years later,” Leto “I CA ME explains. Her personal goals are “to always produce the best quality work and “to be true to myself, the clients, and my coworkers.” Leto finds the commitment of Innsbrook to the community fulfilling. “At this time myself, Ron McColly, his daughter Rhonda McColly-Fleener, and her daughter Randalynn McColly-Fleener are very active with the Methodist Hospital’s Foundation,” Leto says. “We, along with other members of our staff and club members, have all been working very hard to support the Foundation’s Mardi Gras Season, which, for us, is actually a year-long process.” Innsbrook Country Club also silently partners with the McColly Foundation, which raises funds and supports local charities including Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana, the American Heart Association, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, Dollars for Scholars and Purdue University. Innsbrook Country Club will be 95 years old this year, she explains and the club has been completely renovated and has an amazing Member Grille that overlooks the greens. “Our steakhouse restaurant, Langford’s Grille, boasts the best prime aged steaks in the area,” Leto says. “We try to get across the message that Innsbrook is not just a golf club, we offer a great social membership. I would go as far as to say we are the Region’s best kept secret for dining.” — DIANE POULTON A SPECIAL PUBLICATION OF THE TIMES MEDIA CO.

Guilty pleasures
L
live up to their name
ast week, I was entertaining a group of friends at my home, and one of them asked to see a snippet of a show we were discussing that happened to be recorded on my DVR. When I turned on the TV and accessed the menu of my recorded shows, one of them exclaimed conspiratorially, “Ooh, let’s see what she watches!” and I found myself becoming flustered as I raced to exit the screen containing my list. In retrospect, I had nothing too serious to hide— no episodes of “The Bachelor,” “Big Brother” or “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” were lurking there alongside the more universally accepted “Parks and Recreation” and “Parenthood” entries. (And since “Access Hollywood” is essentially a continuation of the local news, that makes it serious journalism, right?) But still, I felt open to judgment. Sure, there are lots of trends we can hide behind these days (“hate-watching” is the new “notwatching,” and “binge-watching” is…well, just new), but the type of program that has really stood the test of time is the notorious “Guilty Pleasure,” a catch-all description for a show that we know we shouldn’t watch because it’s either too uncool, racy, mainstream, violent, old-fashioned, poorly written/acted, derivative, or just plain bad. In other words, we just can’t seem to get enough of it. Wacky guilty pleasure shows may go back to such gems as “Gilligan’s Island,” 1970’s Friday night double billing of “The Brady Bunch”/“The Partridge Family” and the back-to-back late ’70s Saturday night delights of “The Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island.” I spent a large portion of the ’80s watching “Dynasty” and “Dallas,” and I was keeping up with the long-suffering casts of “General Hospital” and “Days of Our Lives” long before anyone considered keeping up with the Kardashians. Like many, many, many people, I went through an embarrassing singing competition phase as well. It started innocently enough with the mother of them all, “American Idol,” peaking during the epic Kris Allen/Adam Lambert Season 8 showdown (full disclosure: I may or may not have actually spent a couple hours voting after the finale…and my guy lost).
8 |||||| PRIME ||||| MARCH 2014
“Say Yes to the Dress,” a guilty pleasure broadcast on TLC. Of course, “American Idol” turned out to be a gateway to even more singing competitions, and before I knew it, I was mixed up with the hard stuff: “The Voice,” “The X-Factor,” and even the occasional episode of “The Sing-Off.” I knew it was time to get help after I watched the entire abysmal second season of “The X-Factor” because I wanted to see if newly minted judge Britney Spears could provide the star-struck contestants with any insightful advice (spoiler alert: she couldn’t). I will never get back those hours of my life. So—emboldened by the helpful disdain of my young-adult children—I managed to quit the singing shows cold turkey. No more “Idol,” “Voice,” or “X-Factor.” As with any addiction, I had to avoid enablers, which mainly consisted of the morningafter “water cooler” performance dissections with colleagues. I felt liberated, and stayed clean for what seemed like an eternity… although as I look back now to count the number of seasons of “American Idol” that I missed, it comes to a grand total of…one (Season 12). Which brings me to my confession: I fell off the wagon a couple of weeks ago. I am a big fan of Harry Connick Jr., and have followed his music, film and television career for
years, so when I heard that he was going to be the new judge on “Idol,” I was intrigued. It started innocently, as so many relapses do: I was alone, bored, and flipping through the TV listings when I noticed that “Idol” was premiering. Wanting to sneak a quick peek at HCJ’s judging style, I tuned in, and just like that…I was hooked again. But in my defense, it turns out that I’m not alone. Entertainment news stories have been rife with such superlatives as “Six Reasons Harry Connick Jr. Will Save American Idol” and “Harry Connick Jr. Steals ‘American Idol’ Spotlight.” In short, HCJ is hilarious, has a great connection with the contestants, crew and other judges, is honest to a fault (earning his nicknames “Harsh Harry” and “Hatchet Harry”), and exhibits an impressive technical musical proficiency. Overall, the new season boasts sharper editing and fewer sob stories in the audition phase, which bodes well for the performance shows. So I’m all in, watching this season of “Idol” with enthusiasm again. Maybe I’m in denial, but I’m pretty sure I can still manage to avoid “The Voice” and “The X-Factor.” Just don’t ever ask me to give up “My 600Pound Life” or “Say Yes to the Dress.” I’m only human, after all. — KATHY MACNEIL

THE CULINARIAN BLOOD ORANGES: THE FESTIVE CITRUS In my opinion, blood oranges are the most gorgeous variety of citrus there is; the deep red color the result of a mutation that appeared in Sicily’s cultivated oranges during the 17th century. Once so exotic Americans rarely saw or tasted them, this small, sweet and nearly seedless fruit is now also grown in California, Arizona and Texas, making them readily available to us in season (December-April).

New Techniques in Joint Replacement Computer modeled cutting blocks, custom designed for each patient and based on their own X-Ray and MRI imaging helps the surgery become even less invasive, faster and with less blood loss.

There are several advantages to this. One, as already mentioned, is precision and customized component placement. Additionally these blocks are smaller than even the minimally invasive instruments, so the surgery can be less invasive. Since they come “pre-aligned,” there are no larger alignment instruments needed, so the surgery is often done in significantly less time. Finally, there is no rod placement down the central bone canal as in traditional techniques, which can lead to extra post-op blood loss.
