Market Mania Upscale artistry highlighted through local pop-up markets
P
op-up markets featuring antiques, handmade wares and repurposed pieces have become the place to do shopping for decorating and furnishing. The trend emerged partly due to the economic downturn of the past decade. A temporary retail space allows for less overhead, and it creates more of an urgency for customers to purchase, knowing that items won’t be there long. The idea of retailers creating short-lived spaces paired with the new shabby-chic craze and demand for quality handcrafted goods is a perfect combination with perfect timing that has brought about several pop-up markets in the Region. “I think the popularity of pop-up events has been driven by so many people taking the courageous leap to use their talents to generate income for their families,” says Carey Keenan-Rowell, founder of Crown Point’s Hunt & Gather Market, the first such market in Northwest Indiana. “It is so wonderful there are so many local venues for small businesses and artists.” Other markets have since popped up. All are run by inspirational and particularly crafty women who have used their business sense to bring together artisans from near and far. It’s a big win-win for the market creators, their many vendors and those who are in paradise spending a day browsing through an upscale market. The 2017 market season is underway, so be sure to mark your calendar.

Nearly four years ago in late spring, Keenan-Rowell exited a long creative career to be at home with her toddler twins and be there for her older child. “My son was struggling terribly with addiction. As a way to help cover medical and treatment expenses and help build business for local artisans, Hunt & Gather was born,” says Keenan-Rowell. “My motto for starting Hunt & Gather has always been, ‘We rise by lifting others.’” Over 165 vendors bring their antique, vintage and unique artisan-made goods to Hunt & Gather. “I strive to have a wide range of style and originality at each market,” says Keenan-Rowell. “What’s unique

Pamela Dennis always enjoyed flea markets and vintage stores, and for several years she owned a shop in Homewood that featured

local vendors and repurposed items, which were really starting to trend when the store closed. “I had about 45 vendors in the shop at the end and when it closed I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” Dennis says. “I decided to put my favorite things together. My passion is for treasure hunting and hosting events and then, of course, supporting small businesses after owning one myself.” Dennis approached the village of Lansing about holding a market at the airport’s historical Ford Hangar, a 1920s structure of exposed brick that had a vintage/retro feel. “It was a big hit and kind of boosted me into this fun job I have now. It really snowballed from there,” she says. Dennis’s Fetching Market at the Ford Hangar was repeated the following year and she’s since held pop-up markets at various locations in Indiana and

The market is named after its three founders, Kathleen Cusson, Kathleen O’Neill and Candace Jorden.
THREE LITTLE BIRDS MARKET
The “three” in the Three Little Birds Market represents the trio that founded the market, which debuted in 2016. Kathleen Cusson and Kathleen O’Neill are the owners of the Valparaiso store Sandpaper, and Candace Jorden has a business making custom signs and doing sign parties. Jorden says that she was selling her signs and doing monthly parties at Sandpaper and had participated in markets before. The three of them one day started talking about starting a market of their own. The Three Little Birds Market was born and Jorden says that the response to the spring market was so good that they scheduled two more dates in 2016. Each market features about 75 to 80 vendors with a big focus on handmade merchandise. “It’s all handmade or vintage/upcycled. Nothing is commercially mass-produced,” Jorden says. “We have some vendors that make just beautiful handcrafted items.” Among the artisan products are dolls, soaps, jewelry, signs, facial products, candles and food items. “We bring in food trucks and it’s at one of the nicer venues. It’s a whole experience,” Jorden says. Valparaiso’s Central Park Plaza is the setting for each Three Little Birds Market. “They were just finishing the pavilion when we thought about doing a
market. We thought we’d try one and we absolutely fell in love with it. It’s a beautiful spot for having a show there.” The trio plans to repeat its schedule in 2017 with Saturday markets in the spring and fall and a nighttime market in the summer. Blue Moon Vintage Market is heading into season number three as a stylized pop-up market that happens on the fourth weekend of each month and on three holiday weekends in a warehouse about a mile north of downtown Three Oaks, Michigan. Jen Kerr, who runs the markets with her business partner and mother Vicki Kerr, says they started after a nearby market she’d been a vendor at decided to discontinue. “That market was seasonal, but then we found this location and it was heated and we could have markets year round,” says

ouples planning a wedding are always looking for special touches to make their big days stand out. One of the hottest trends in the culinary category for weddings is the concept of a food bar. Whether brides and grooms want to offer something as whimsical as a retro candy bar for guests or choose gourmet options such as seafood with different-flavored cocktail sauces, a satay or shish-kebab station or decadent dessert bar, the possibilities are endless. “We do a fairly large number of weddings and other parties,” says Nick Walker, manager of ChicagoLand Popcorn in Merrillville. pretty elaborate for more flavors. The business features 141 flavors of popcorn, Mogda says. Among some of the favorite flavors for weddings and events are Caramel Sea Salt, the ChicagoLand Mix and Loaded Baked Potato. Nick Walker says other popular flavors include White Chocolate Macadamia Nut and Kettle Corn. “A lot of people are interested in the (food) bar trend,” says Allison Smith, retail manager of Albanese Confectionery Group in Merrillville. “Many people are doing a candy buffet in addition to desserts and cake for their weddings.” She says brides will often request favorite candy for the bar or choose candy in the color scheme of the wedding. According to Smith, some of the popular selections for a wedding candy buffet include Albanese’s twelve-flavor gummi bears, chocolatecovered and yogurt-covered pretzels, and more. Sometimes people are interested in providing nostalgic-type candy and may go with selections such as Sixlets or cherry sour balls. Smith says items such as Sixlets are good because they come in various colors which can correspond to a wedding party’s special colors. Albanese, which has been in business since 1983, carries a variety of candy ranging from chocolate-covered treats to other types of candy, gum and confections.

Nikitaras, who owns Unveiled Weddings and Events, says many of today’s weddings are indeed featuring food bars, or what she calls midnight snacks. After a traditional reception and after everyone starts drinking and dancing, she says, many of today’s weddings will have special bars set up featuring items such as tacos, cheeseburgers, pizza and more. Candy and popcorn bars, she adds, are especially popular. “I think (food bars are) popular because they look pretty and are necessary,” Nikitaras says. If guests are drinking throughout the event, she adds, it’s good to give them something else to fill their stomachs before they leave. Nikitaras has worked with a number of brides who’ve had creative food bars, including everything from a hot dog cart and nachos to colorful candy and popcorn buffets, and says, “Those are fun things to add.” ■ ELOISE MARIE VALADEZ

VIGORATE Tone Up in Time

re you shaping up for a big event? Summer weddings, a cruise, a stage performance—these kinds of occasions make us want to look our best. Who doesn’t want to be photogenic? But rather than trying to drop a few pounds overnight, try focusing on your health in advance. Take some nutrition and fitness advice from area experts who can tell you how to eat clean and tone up the healthy way. When it comes time for photos, you won’t have to worry about the camera catching your “good side.” The more time you give yourself to prepare for a big event, the better. So, if you’ve got a couple of months, you’ll see more results. If you’ve only got a few weeks or even a few days, make sure your goals are realistic. Take it from Phrosini SamisSmith, fitness assessment and program outreach coordinator and certified personal trainer at Community Hospital Fitness Pointe. “When people have specific goals in mind, it helps them stay on track and [they] are less likely to abandon the effort in achieving what they want,” says Samis-Smith.
Make a Commitment

TONE UP! routine gets challenging. Have a support system in place, a workout buddy or some friends and family. They can listen and encourage you along the way.
Clean Up Your Diet
Cut the refined carbohydrates and sugar and focus on whole foods, advises Kelly Devine Rickert, registered dietitian with Franciscan Alliance and media spokesperson for the Illinois Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She recommends replacing the unhealthy foods with whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and unsalted nuts. “Eat every few hours throughout the day with fresh foods you prepped from home. Set aside your snacks and meals the night before so you are not in a rush in the morning. This helps to eliminate excess salt you consume from various fast food restaurants and vending machines.”
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
It can be challenging to stay hydrated, so drink up, Rickert says. “Water will help increase your energy levels and decrease hunger.” Some possible benefits of your newfound water habit may also include:
clearer skin, healthier hair, improved digestion, and a boosted immune system.
Hit the Gym (or the Home Gym)
It doesn’t matter where or when you exercise, just incorporate daily movement. “Aim for 45 minutes, 5 days a week of moderate physical activity; aka, get those heart rates up! Add in some strength training twice a week as well,” Rickert says. Start where you are and work on practical, achievable goals. Seek help from a trainer who can assess your current fitness level and help you develop a plan.
Strike a Balance
Combine clean eating and proper exercise and you’ll see the results. “Everything is a balance, which means what you put in your mouth, you have to burn. It is similar to a teeter-totter that if you go out to eat every night and don’t make wise choices and then on the other side of the teeter-totter you don’t exercise, the likelihood is that you will gain weight,” says Samis-Smith. “If you make smart choices in your eating habits and in combination with exercise, the results should be favorable.”
Use dumbbells in these basic moves to strengthen and tone.
Curtsy Salute
This move helps you tighten up your core to improve stability and support your back. ■ Stand
with feet hip-width apart; hold a dumbbell in your left hand over your head, palm facing forward, with your right hand on your hip. ■ Lunge your right leg back diagonally, bending both knees (as if doing a curtsy), bending your left elbow to bring the dumbbell near your right ear. ■ Stand on your left leg, extending your left arm up as you raise your right leg out to the side. Return to curtsy. ■ Do ten reps and repeat.
Overhead Press
This simple move works your shoulders, arms, trapezius muscles, abs and legs. ■ Stand
with feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Raise your dumbbells to shoulder height, palms forward. ■ Exhale as you push the dumbbells above your head until the ends touch together. Don’t allow your elbows to flare out to the sides. ■ Inhale as you release the dumbbells to shoulder height. ■ Do twelve reps and repeat.

Eclectic finds and artistic ingenuity maximize a minimal space in Miller Beach
T 1 1. Plants provide the window treatment at the home of Nuco and Camela Villanueva in the Miller Beach neighborhood of Gary. Careful planning, with cheery and neutral colors, makes the 600-square-foot apartment in a downtown commercial building seem much roomier. he tall, narrow commercial building constructed in 1909 sits inconspicuously amongst others in the downtown Miller Beach area of Gary. But one of its doors opens to a surprise: Upstairs, where Nuco and Camela Villanueva dwell, is bright, aweinspiring, innovative. It has to be. With just 600 square feet of living space, it rivals any tiny house featured on TV and surpasses most in achieving a spacious feel. The couple bought the building a year ago and has clearly enjoyed making their apartment lovely and livable, incorporating their interests, artistry and energy. “We’ve lived in an apartment for years,” says Camela, “Cami” to her friends. “So this smaller space is fine.” Still, it’s 600 square feet, a challenge no matter what, yet it displays a delightful mix of the practical and the unexpected, achieved with inexpensive finds and an eye for style. Camela’s visage and conversation reflect vibrant energy. “We want to travel! Japan is one of the places we want to go, so we’re saving money and not accumulating too much stuff.” She found an apartment-size stove at Yesterday’s Treasures Antique Mall & Artisan Gallery in Chesterton. A small refrigerator fits under the kitchen counter (a wide table against a wall, with a small sink). The simple, small, round table for dining—purchased from the original owner at Chicago’s former Merchandise Mart—sits against a wall separating it from the stairwell. The apartment is a long stretch with an L-shape at the end. Two banks of four very narrow lockers against one wall provide the only closet space. It’s practical, yet between the two sets of lockers the couple placed a narrow door with metal latticework. It’s accents like this that add interest and a sense of space.

Of the former original Miller Beach library, now 108 years old, “Its bones are really good,” says Camela— and some of those bones were visible. Someone had begun a renovation, but there was no drywall, no HVAC, no bath. But the history of Gary had intrigued Camela for some time, and when she and Nuco investigated the inexpensive properties, “We liked the Miller Beach area and this 1,300-square-foot commercial building. There were windows and the 4 flooring is solid,” though it took 30 passes with a sander to get through layers of paint to reveal the lovely, original maple flooring that provides a light canvas for the place. Downstairs, a business owner had “changed the building’s whole facade,” Camela says with regret. She brightens as she adds, “But the original tin ceiling is in good shape,” and she and Nuco want to restore the downstairs inside and out. Nuco owns the Studio One Chicago tattoo business in the Windy City, where the couple lived and Camela owned Revival A Go-Go vintage store. She plans to reopen her store this spring downstairs

in their Miller Beach building, with antiques and “lots of books—I want to buy and sell books! It’s so much fun being a curator.” Nuco will have a separate area there for a second tattoo store and space for him to paint in the Japanese style he loves. Camela has her husband’s artwork on her arms—softly colored roses, vines, a pretty little snake. “See how the colors are done? It’s special,” she says, proud and happy. Of the move from Chicago she muses, “I had a little bit of an epiphany. I wasn’t really creating new memories. I wanted new surroundings for inspiration and Miller Beach is a neat little enclave. We like the community, and the properties we like are affordable.” Living three 7 blocks fom the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is a plus for this couple who has poured such energy into their newto-them home. She adores finding vintage treasures; some of them here are from Re-Used Depot in Mayfield, Illinois, including the lockers, fireplace mantel, pedestal sink, and Japanese-style soaking tub. Other, local finds: the curved coffee table, two guitar pick tables, an arch lamp. Like the sofa, all have wood bases that coordinate the living room area. All the while, Camela speaks in the breezy, friendly way that is her free-spirited self.

Deep windowsills were created by framing the interior perimeter to cover walls of original, exposed plaster with drywall. It expanded the space and preserved the integrity of the building, and spray-foaming the inner wall space keeps the abode warm in winter. Another, more arresting advantage of the deep-set windows is space for Camela’s plants. Nuco put multiple shelves in each window, now filled with varied pots of plants, from cactus to ivy. There are so many throughout the apartment that Camela, with irrepressible cheer, exclaims, “Let’s count them!” She does, and announces, “One hundred thirty-four! I didn’t include the air plants, though.” She notes the healthful aspect of having plant life indoors.

Between the top of the stairs and a window is a large, vintage Indiana map, its hues of orange and yellow echoing the cheerful vibe. Some wall spaces are empty of any adornment, making the spaces seem larger, though in the living room area are two long 1960s scrolls of tiger images. There are real animals: two tiny dogs and one large one. An L-shape at the far end of the long living space provides an alcove for the bedroom, just room enough for the 1960s Kent Coffey bedroom set of full-size bed, a dresser, and nightstand. 9 Yet ingenious use of the space allows for such quirky accents as a large, Japanese koi fish-shaped kite in an opposite corner. Tucked in amongst the window plants here are natural elements like a whole puffer fish and small animal skull; the entire delicate, curled-up skin and fanged head of a small, jade boa constrictor rests on the dresser. Walls in yellow and orange reflect Camela’s bright personality. The effect is not a mishmash of “stuff.” There’s a mod, restrained style and room to move, to live, to breathe. Camela loves vintage lamps, so two round, enamel ceiling lights near the kitchen area are from an airplane hangar. In the entryway stairway ceiling, two vintage 10 globes hang from wood panels and each has large flower petal-shape bases her brother, Rob Christopher, fashioned from veneer woods for guitar making he’d found from a former tenant at Camela’s Chicago store. Owner of Emotive Reclaim, “He’s sooo talented!” Camela says. One wall in the stairwell has framed posters of the indie movies Nuco favors. At the top landing, another find: a Buddha. “I see it when I come home and it’s peaceful; it symbolizes a calmness,” she says. Off the kitchen where there was just a roof, a wall had been extended to create a porch, a storage area for now. The couple plans to enlarge it and install another staircase. Mornings find Camela at a corner of the sofa, where she reads and meditates. “The sun comes in, it’s very quiet, and it seems like the Earth is very still,” she says of the space. It comes as no surprise that she has taught yoga and practices it. Their little home “feels like a secret space because you’d never know it was here from the outside,” Camela says. “It’s our first winter here; it feels like we’re setting a tone, for a healthy lifestlye and to nurture ourselves.” It seems to be working. “My husband says, ‘I can’t wait to get home.’”

New rules in nursery décor

very mom-to-be delights in dreaming of baby’s room. Whether the dream’s imbued with pastel shades of blue or pink, or veers outside of tradition with neutral-shaded palettes that allow whimsical and bold accents to shine, baby room décor always has heart, as the primary resident is fiercely beloved. And, though nurseries’ themes are as varied as the babies who sleep in them, we always protect what we love. Is there a way to make baby’s room safe without compromising on style? Mary Puntillo, neonatal nurse clinician for Community Hospital in Munster, recalls the first time she saw a local store get it right when it came to showing a baby-safe nursery in its floor display. It was three years ago, when she walked into the Schererville Bed Bath & Beyond’s Buy Buy Baby section. As part of her job, she says, “I scope out stores for baby supplies, and seeing unsafe elements incorporated into showroom displays would get my blood pressure up. I absolutely loved what I saw at Buy Buy Baby. Families are drawn to pretty stuff, and this set-up was also perfect for safety. It’s a service to the public.” Puntillo was so impressed that she sought out a store rep to commend them, and met Patricia De Boer, bridal manager and baby registry representative and expert for Bed Bath & Beyond, Schererville. De Boer says, “I’m proud to be in a registry department that doesn’t just hand a scan gun to a customer. We’re trained to know our products, assist customers in choosing what is best for their homes, and help them with information on how to install such items.” De Boer’s and Puntillo’s shared passion for baby safety led to a partnership between Bed Bath & Beyond and Community Hospital in which Bed Bath & Beyond provides baby bags filled with vendor samples, coupons, and a baby book with safety advice to new moms. The two entities have also sponsored baby fairs with vendors and baby care and health experts.

A few different finger foods are great for mingling guests, and I always make sure to have fresh fruit and sweets. For this fiesta I prepared black bean street tacos, cilantro lime mini shrimp kabobs, fresh fruit with chile lime salt, chips with individual corn salsa cups and cactus cookies. You can make everything look more gourmet by garnishing. I used crumbled Mexican cheese, cilantro, green onion and lime wedges to garnish the appetizers. For a larger group, you could also try a taco and nacho bar instead of finger foods. You can easily make a couple of different meats for a crowd in slow cookers and then have an assortment of toppings with chips and tortillas. My favorite slow-cooker meats for a fiesta are shredded chicken, pork and beef brisket.

diamond isn’t just a diamond anymore. As wedding season is around the corner, couples are discovering there are many options for unique displays of their love. The wedding jewelry industry is constantly evolving, and local jewelers are working to stay ahead of trends. Whether it’s the type of jewel or the cut of the piece, engagement and wedding jewelry has a lot of different options to meet the unique individual tastes of the buyer. At Albert’s Diamond Jewelers in Schererville, even how diamonds are created is increasing buzz in the wedding industry. The store now sells a selection of diamonds that are grown in a lab rather than acquired through mining. Though the technology to create diamonds has existed for decades, the practice is now making its way into the jewelry industry due to the desire among consumers to purchase more environmentally friendly options. “Any of these diamonds we sell are set in recycled gold,” says Joshua Halpern, owner of Albert’s. “Not only do we have a diamond that caused no destruction to the planet, we’re also using recycled gold to create jewelry we place the diamonds in.” Only a handful of manufacturers worldwide are able to create the Type IIa diamonds, which are extremely rare in nature and allow the highest amount of light to pass through the stone, making them more brilliant and valuable. Lab-created diamonds, also known as engineered diamonds, are made using technology that mimics the conditions in which diamonds naturally develop beneath the Earth’s crust using extreme pressure and heat. “Every one has been tested for light performance,” Halpern says. “Though it’s a very small segment of our product assortment right now, as it gets more popular, we might increase our assortment.” Currently, Albert’s features labcreated diamonds in a variety of pieces, from earrings to bracelets, and as loose diamonds.
Markie White, marketing and merchandising manager at Martin Binder Jeweler in Valparaiso, says fancy cuts, such as pear shapes and ovals, have increasingly become more popular. “For those who are looking to go more nontraditional, colored stones are popular, particularly sapphires and most currently, morganite,” White says. “Rose gold has been more popular lately as well.” Jewelers also are seeing a trend in the setting of the ring, with brides-to-be opting for a large stone on a very thin diamond band. “And as always, diamond halo engagement rings are still among the top sellers,” White says. Engagement and wedding rings aren’t the only pieces of wedding jewelry attracting attention. BEACH GLAM
You have an opportunity to allow your centerpiece to reflect the things you love! While it’s great to pick something just because it’s pretty, try to steer clear of solely incorporating ideas you see online that everyone else is doing. We selected this beach theme for those who love the beach or maybe have it as part of their story. The centerpiece features soft beach tones of white and gray with a soft aqua coming from the beach glass vase. We added three medium shells, a lantern, and several mercury glass votives. The table number was stamped on a tag and hung on the vase.
ENCHANTED FOREST
A really fun theme for an event is an enchanted or woodland forest theme. This theme uses a lot of moss and natural elements along with deep jewel-toned flowers, wood slices, and fairy lights. Manzanita tree centerpieces are fun to work with and create a unique look for your event. We secured the tree in a wood box and covered it in moss. There are two glass globes hanging off the tree filled with moss and tapioca flowers, along with additional flowers glued on the trees. The table is covered in a green organza overlay, which creates a softness and ties the tables together.

We love the romantic feeling of this pink- and gold-themed centerpiece. Kris Livovich of Sugarfield Flowers created this beautiful floral arrangement featuring pale pink roses, lisianthus, hyacinth, Queen Anne’s lace, orchids, baby’s breath, silver tree and seeded and dollar eucalyptus. hen planning a wedding, never underestimate the flowers. Flowers add so much texture, color, and life to your wedding dÊcor. When it comes to a bouquet, it’s important to focus on the time of year of your wedding and your vibe or theme. I prefer lots of variety when it comes to the florals that will make up the bouquet; not only does it add dimension and character, but also adds a unique aspect to it. All bouquets do not have to be perfectly round, and greenery is a great way to create a different shape and a more unexpected bouquet look. We chose softer tones for our spring bouquet, went with the bolder jewel tones for our Indian Summer bouquet, and used a beautiful red for a more classic play on our holiday bouquet. Finish your bouquet off with a special twist such as pretty buttons or leather wrapped with a sentimental brooch. Really, there are no rules when it comes to bouquets, which is the best part! We worked with Jessica Granger of Thode Floral in LaPorte, who provided the following descriptions of each bouquet.

Keeping true to our color palette, bundles of greenery draped around a few ivory roses for the bridal bouquet. Having greenery at an indoor reception can add the element of nature most brides are looking for without the bugs and threat of bad weather. A simple greenery boutonniere wrapped in kraft paper and copper wire had all the pop without having to add colorful flowers.
