The stories behind the creation of songs you know

‌T

‌Tom Lounges / beatboss@aol.com‌

oday’s column is about a skinny kid from Berwyn, Illinois who has mined a considerable amount of precious metal over the years, both gold and platinum. Not with a pick-ax, but rather with a pen, a notepad and a piano. Jim Peterik’s walls are full of gold and platinum albums and there is even a Grammy Award to underscore the songwriting skills he has mastered over the decades since his teenage girlfriend (now wife) Karen inspired him to scribble down some words on paper about how he felt he was being used as a private taxi. Once put to music and with the help of one of the most instantly recognized horn parts in rock history, those scribbled words became the first number one single of Peterik’s career as recorded by his band, The Ides of March, who this year celebrate their 50th anniversary together. The story behind that 1970 charttopper song “Vehicle” is one of many “behind-the-song” tales to be told when Peterik returns February 9 at downtown Valparaiso’s Chicago Street Theatre. And Peterik is still scribbling notes down in his ever present notepad or humming a melody into a pocket recorder, which he later sits down with at the grand piano in his home or takes into his private state-of-the-art recording studio. “I’m always writing,” said the man from whose prolific pen sprang such infectious radio hits not only for his own legendary Ides band (“You Wouldn’t Listen,” “L.A. Goodbye,”) and his ‘80s MTV group Survivor (“Eye of the Tiger,” “Burning Heart,” “The Search Is Over,” etc.), but for other artists including .38

Special (“Hold On Loosely,” “Rockin’ Into The Night,” “Fantasy Girl”), Sammy Hagar (“Heavy Metal”) and others like Lynyrd Skynryd, REO Speedwagon, Van Zant, and Henry Paul Band. Peterik said some of his biggest and best loved songs were written while sitting with friends like .38 Special’s Don Barnes at his kitchen table drinking coffee. The stories on how the songs were written, what inspired them and other fun factoids are the basis for Peterik’s intimate solo shows like the one on February 9, where he strips away all the arrangements and production to showcase the raw song with just his voice and an acoustic guitar. The Valparaiso venue itself has played a part in some of the stories he shares about the songs, including how his Pride of Lions writing/performing partner Toby Hitchcock used to sing in the CST building before it was converted from a church to a theatre. Playing CST even prompted Peterik to resurrect a fan favorite that he had all but forgotten how to play. “For years I had been apprehensive about performing ‘Heavy Metal’ the

big one I wrote with Sammy Hagar, especially the idea of doing it unplugged and all alone,” recalled Peterik . “One night a few years ago during one of my first shows at CST while performing a solo show like the one I’ll be doing February 9th, Paul Braun who promotes the concerts at CST yelled out – ‘Play Heavy Metal!’ When others in the audience joined him in the request, I felt I had no choice. I had to re-learn it on the spot and gave it my best shot. It was pretty rough, but the crowd went nuts. The song has been a part of my show ever since.” Do not expect to hear songs sounding just like the record at this performance; expect to hear them as they sounded at the time they were written. Peterik’s “Storyteller Concert” gives fans a chance to feel like a fly on the wall watching as songs that are part of their life’s soundtrack were created. What inspired “Eye of the Tiger?” Did The Ides of March really get bumped off an early world tour because they were getting better reviews than headliner, Led Zeppelin? What Survivor song did Peterik give away that later went #1 for another group? The answers to these and other questions will be discovered February 9 when the man behind the music tells tales and plays tunes at Chicago Street Theatre. Peterik is raffling off a guitar autographed by himself, the Ides of March members and several of his famous World Stage friends like Mike Reno of Loverboy, Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger, David Pack of Ambrosia and Keith Burns of Trick Pony at his February 9 CST concert with all proceeds benefitting The Humane Society of Northwest Indiana. Tickets for the raffle will be $10.

At Blackjack, there’s nothing sweet about 16

‌T

‌John G. Brokopp‌

here probably isn’t a blackjack player around who looks forward to being dealt a 16. It’s a hand that is so uneasy to stand and so tempting to hit. Draw a card and only an ace through five will help you. Anything else and you bust. What’s a player to do? The best percentage play from the basic strategy standpoint is to stand on any 16 when the dealer is showing two through six. When the dealer is showing a seven through ace, the best percentage play is to take a hit. There is an important exception. If the dealer is showing a ten and you happen to be holding a three-card 16, the best play is to stand. To illustrate, say you are dealt a 10 and a six, and the dealer is showing a 10. On this hand you’ll stand. If you are dealt a deuce and a four then take a hit and draw a 10 for a 16, the best strategy is to stand if the dealer is showing a 10. If you happen to be holding a 16 in a casino that offers the surrender at its blackjack tables, basis strategy dictates that you exercise the option (surrendering half your bet in exchange for not playing out your hand) if the dealer is showing a nine, 10 or ace. Variations of 16 calls for changes in strategy. For example, when the dealer is showing a four, a five, or a six, a player’s “soft” 16 (ace-five) is a prime opportunity to double down. Taking a hit on a soft 16 can never hurt you because you can’t bust. Of course you’re always looking for a five because that’ll give you a 21. At the other end of the spectrum, draw a six on your soft 16, and you’re stuck with a hand of 12. Doubling down is a great opportunity for players to make money. In exchange for doubling your bet you are dealt one card. The variation of 16 that puzzles many players is a pair of eights. Basic strategy advises that you always split a pair of eights (except versus an ace when surrender is available). When you split a pair, you make an additional bet for the privilege of playing two hands. Splitting is another opportunity to make money at the blackjack table, but caution is always advised.

Splitting eights is a pure defensive move. Depending upon the value of the dealer’s card you are playing against, the strategy sometimes is a recipe for disaster. A pair of eights is the only 16 that gives you the opportunity to take one bad hand and attempt to make two good hands out of it. The price, of course, is an additional wager equal in value to your original bet. Splitting eights against a weak dealer’s up card generally puts players in the driver’s seat. You are always hoping to capitalize on a favorable situation, especially if one or both of your split hands gives you a double down opportunity. If you happen to draw another eight you can re-split and set yourself up for a big pay day if the cards are right. When you split eights against a strong dealer card (seven or higher), that’s where the defensive strategy comes into play. Giving yourself a fighting chance to win is ultimately what it’s all about.

Chicago Street takes trip to ‘Leenane’ ‌Tim Shellberg / Times Correspondent‌

‌‘T

he Beauty Queen of Leenane” is often referred to as a dark comedy or adult comedy, but Traci Brandt, co-director of Valparaiso’s Chicago Street Theatre’s production of “Leenane,” sees more to the story than just laughs. “This one has funny moments, but it also has dramatic moments and also has that quality of being a thriller, which is such a unique experience in a theater,” she said. Opening Jan. 31 and running through Feb. 15, “Leenane” tells the

6

tale of Maureen, a middle aged woman with mental and emotional issues living in County Galway, Ireland in the early ‘90s. There, she cares for her domineering mother, Mag, and struggles with neighbors Pato and Ray, who are also having issues with their lots in life. “Leenane” was penned by U.K.based playwright Martin McDonagh, whose CV includes acclaimed plays such as “The Pillowman,” “The Cripple of Innishman” and, on the big screen, last year’s “Seven Psychopaths.” “Leenane” made its debut in Ireland in 1996 and received six Tony Award nominations, including Best Play

when it made its way to this side of the pond two years later. Chicago Street Theatre’s production of “Leenane” marks their third McDonaugh play. In the past, they have brought both “Pillowman” and “Innishman” to their stage. “The characters are incredible, along with the humor and the conflict that develops between the characters,” said Brandt, who is directing “Leenane” with Jonni Pera. “The conflict that develops with the characters is just really compelling for an audience.” Lisa Formosa-Parmigiano from Crown Point portrays Maureen in Chicago Street’s production of “Leenane” and is joined onstage by a

trio of Valparaiso-based thesps: Tom O’Neil as Ray, Timothy Gleason as Pato and Sheri Nash-Braun as Mag. “We’ve got a strong, strong cast, which is something that’s great when you only have four characters,” Brandt said. “You get the chance to showcase each actor in a play like this.” Next up for Chicago Street Theatre is a production of the comedy “Play it Again, Sam,” scheduled to open April 4. hen fighter Mike Tyson served his prison sentence in Indianapolis for rape after an incident in Indy while judging a beauty pageant in 1992, his who’s who list of approved celebrity visitors made headlines. Rapper Tupac Shakur, the O’Jays (yes, the whole group), Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick (who happens to be Whitney Houston’s aunt), BB King, Phyllis Diller and Florence Henderson of “Brady Bunch” fame were all on the list leaked to media. (Diller said later, while friends with Henderson, she wasn’t sure why her name was on the list, since she didn’t “even know the poor devil” and “never intended to visit him in prison.”) After a successful bout on Broadway,” fighter Tyson brings his one-man stage show, “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth” to The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 for one exclusive performance as part of his national tour. During the two-hour narrated

looked at ups and down of Iron Mike’s life and career, narrated in person by the man behind his now famous tattoo, Tyson explains why he refused to see Henderson, who was in Indianapolis at the time to attend the Indianapolis 500 Race, during his incarceration. It was in February a year ago when Tyson brought the same show to Chicago for two sold-out shows at the Cadillac Palace Theatre as part of the 2013 Broadway in Chicago season. The concept for Tyson to make the rounds and talk to the masses is the idea of Spike Lee and producer James L. Nederlander. After what’s described as “a successful run at the MGM Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre,” the show has charmed both critics and audiences eager for a fascinating discovery into the roller coaster mind that is this built-like-a-machine man. “The show is only about 5 percent boxing related,” Tyson, 47, reminded last week while chatting by telephone. “This is a look at my life and where I came from and where I’ve been and

where I’m going.” As audiences discover, no topic is too delicate for Tyson to tackle while

sharing his stories, photos and video clips during the nearly two house journey, which includes the infamous

“ear bitten-off” moment, when Tyson chomped Evander Holyfield in the ring in 1997. The show is a mix of personal life, pop culture and his own preachings and laments. Tyson covers his life from his family and early start in the ring at age 14, to his ill-fated marriage to actress Robin Givens and his prison sentence in Indianapolis and his newest life chapter working as a fight promoter. During one segment, he shows a video clip of him and Givens being interviewed by Barbara Walters, freeze-frames it and describes the pair on screen as “the classic chump and the tramp,” claiming Givens and her mother Ruth worked together to trick him and gain as much financially as possible. He also says a young, yet-tobe-discovered Brad Pitt was having an affair with Givens to further his career, while she was in the midst of their divorce drama. Tyson also gives his manager Don King a working over for “stealing from him” with “double billing” and charging $8,000 a week for towels for Tyson. Created by Adam Steck, CEO of SPI Entertainment, “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth” is presented by Nederlander, directed by Lee, written by Kiki Tyson, executive produced by Mike Tyson, Kiki Tyson and Adam Steck and originally directed by Randy Johnson. In addition to his touring, Tyson also admits he gets plenty of other offers for television and film guest appearances, like his funny cameo role playing himself in “The Hangover” and “The Hangover II.” “I did a version of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in Italy and then I was approached to do the American

It’s the best time of year

or me, it all started about nine years ago. It was the time of year that basically excites everyone—the Super Bowl. I wasn’t doing anything in particular, but my dad suggested that I invite some of my friends over, and he would invite some of the family over and we could have food, and it would be a

good time. He had no idea what he was getting himself into. From there on out, our party has gotten bigger every year with more and more food and desserts. I’ll start with all the amazing food we have. One of the staples at our parties is chili cheese dogs. We have had these since day one. We

now have a hot dog warmer that keeps them warm, and the chili is homemade by my dad’s girlfriend Jeanie. It will simply blow you away. Another big hit are the shish kabobs, exclusively sourced from a place in Hegewisch called Baltimore Foods, which stocks pre-cut seasoned pork. It takes a couple of hours to prepare them, but it is

definitely worth it, and some people come just for those. We also added, a few years ago, a triple crock-pot where we have all kinds of chip dips ranging from buffalo dip to chili con queso. We are always thinking of new foods to add throughout the year, and we also have lots of other snack foods. Of course there is always plenty of beer

to go around to wash down all that great food. When it comes to dessert, we don’t skimp either. We recently added a chocolate fountain with all sorts of sweets to dip into it. Of course we keep the football theme going with football helmet-shaped cupcakes and Jell-o. Jeanie also makes her famous bird nest desserts that are crunchy goodness covered in chocolate and butterscotch. She also makes an assortment of other desserts as well. Now that I am beyond hungry talking about all that, I am going to move on to what we do throughout the night. Up until 2007 when the Bears tragically lost to the Colts, we would always play poker. We set up a table in the middle of living room, leaving plenty of viewing space for the others that didn’t want to play, and we would start a tournament as soon as the game started. Now we all crowd around the TV with just enough room for

everyone and we eat and laugh and focus on the game and of course the commercials. It seems that there is always a split between the fans, which makes it more fun because half the room cheers while half the room boos. When halftime rolls around we could all care less about who is performing—we all make our way to the driveway for a pick up game of basketball. Despite wind, sleet, snow or hail, we are always out there playing. All that basketball is sure to make anyone hungry, and by the time halftime is over, we are all ready to partake in round 2 of food. My favorite part is when the game is over. As I watch the game, I get more and more in the football mood, so after the broadcast, we all make our way back outside where I have set up about eight spot lights that illuminate the whole football field. We have a vicious game of tackle football, which usually ends in all of us covered head to toe in mud. We start setting up for this amazing party the Friday and Saturday before, but the real prep work happens at about 10 a.m. on Sunday, where we prepare the food, get the football field ready and set up chairs and more. So if you are having your own party this year, or are thinking about it, I wish you luck, but it is all worth it in the end to make memories to share with family and friends.
