t’s happening again! South Side production company, SoPro, presents its 31st Annual Thanksgiving Chicago All-Star Blues Revue Saturday with a stellar cast of musical talents onboard. SoPro partners Bud Monaco and Red Rose have fine-tuned this event over the years, as players step on and off stage in a timely manner for mini-sets of blues classics and original fare. Although meticulously structured, the show never comes off mechanical, as participants embrace the jam-heavy, free form style inherent to the blues. “We’ve got a lot of the familiar faces back with us, and we’re back for

a second year at Sullivan’s Irish Pub & Eatery (4660 West 147th St.) in Midlothian,” said Monaco. “Sullivan’s is a perfect venue for this kind of multi-artist show because it has a full size stage, in-house sound and lights, and plenty of free parking.” Sullivan’s offers a varied menu, so blues fans can opt for a full dinner/ concert experience. This year’s event features performances by Francine Marie and Peaches Staten, harmonica player/vocalist Doug Lee, and guitarist/vocalist Billy King. Those folks and others will be backed by The Chicago Horns (featuring Bill McFarland, Hank Ford, Kenny Anderson and Tony Ferraro) and a crack band of instrumentalists — bassist John Falstrom, keyboardist Greg Wolfman, drummer Scott Bonshire,

ROCK TO THE RESCUE: Helping Tornado Victims At deadline for this week’s column came the news of a special benefit concert being organized by Midwest classic rock bands Styx and REO Speedwagon to help victims of the recent wave of storms and tornadoes in the Midwest. The event — “Rock To The Rescue: Extending A Hand To Those In Need” — happens Dec. 4 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Ill. It will feature both bands, plus a bevy of special guests unconfirmed at press time but soon to be announced. All artists, vendors, crew and local staff will forgo any personal compensation for the evening. Styx guitarist and Chicago native James “JY” Young said, “As we come to the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, I’m reminded of his famous quote, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.’ The good people of Illinois lent support and a helping hand to every artist on this bill at different times in their respective careers, and we owe a tremendous debt. It’s our turn to ask what we can do for this great state, and the best way we know to help those in need is to get on stage and let the incredible healing power of music play its part in rebuilding Illinois.” For updated show info: uscellularcoliseum.com. Steepwater fans can get an advance copy at the quartet’s CD release party this Friday at Chicago’s Double Door (1572 North Milwaukee) with special guests The Muggs and The Nick Moss Band. hen the poker craze was in full swing a decade ago, the game was an unlikely component of mainstream entertainment world wide. Its popularity was fueled by innovations which made it a perfect fit for television, the most significant of which were mini table top cameras that revealed player’s hands to the viewing audience. Although its widespread pop culture presence has waned in recent years, poker remains the most high profile form of gambling. The annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas has been embraced by sports fans as a spectacle worthy of hours of coverage on ESPN throughout the year. In the wake of the recent World Series of Poker Circuit Event held at the Horseshoe, big time professional poker has returned to the Chicago area at Majestic Star Casino. The Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) is currently hosting a tournament at the Gary property that will continue through Dec. 8. The Heartland Poker Tour, founded in 2005, was designed to capitalize on the popularity of poker by making high stakes tournament play affordable to average players. The lure of giving card playing enthusiasts the opportunity to showcase their skills in a spotlight outside of the poker room norm has proved to be a highly successful formula. Majestic Star has partnered with HPT by hosting tournaments every

year since 2006. More than $7 million has been awarded to participants in the 13 tournaments that have been held there. A record Main Event prize pool of $835,200 was distributed at the tournament held in December of 2007. The winner, Leon Morford, took home $233,016. In August of this year, the HPT Main Event at Majestic Star lured a record 520 entrants. It was captured by Schaumberg, Illinois resident Bob Chow who collected a $171,534 paycheck. Even though HPT prides itself on giving average players a shot at glory, the tournament has not been without established stars. Greg “Fossilman” Raymer, winner of the 2004 World Series of Poker, won three Heartland Poker Tour events in as many months in 2012 to secure Player of the Year honors. The current tournament at Majestic Star will be the first event to count towards points for Season X, the second year under which play is conducted according to a new tournament structure designed by one of the top professional poker stars of all time, Daniel Negreanu.

The Main Event competition will be held Dec. 5 – 8 with the televised Final Table set to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9. Santa’s stage helper New national Broadway tour of ‘Elf the Musical’ in Chicago ‌ hilip Potempa / P philip.potempa@nwi.com

‌A

ctor Will Blum is ready to spend his Thanksgiving in Chicago, but not so ready for the cold. Blum’s smiling face and boundless energy helped earn him the title role for the new Broadway national tour of “Elf the Musical,” the fun, silly story now set to songs about an extra-large elf in Santa’s North Pole workshop who doesn’t fit the yuletide expectations of his smaller, pointy-eared counterparts. “It’s going to feel like the North Pole in Chicago,” Blum joked earlier this month during a telephone interview from Raleigh, N.C., where the new tour launched the week of Nov. 15. “When I’m on stage, under the hot stage lights, even the elf tights get hot once you add the wig and hat to my costume. But walking around outside, is something entirely different.” Blum is spending his Thanksgiving morning waving from a float in downtown Chicago for the 2013 McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. of “Elf the Musical,” which opened Tuesday in Chicago and continues until Dec. 15 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Based on the beloved 2003 New Line Cinema hit film starring “Saturday Night Live” favorite Will Ferrell, “Elf the Musical” features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin of “The Wedding Singer,” with a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan of “Annie,” “The Producers” and “Hairspray” and Bob Martin of “The Drowsy Chaperone.” The production features direction by Sam Scalamoni and choreography by Connor Gallagher. “I remember when I first saw the movie version, I thought to myself the story and subject lent itself to being a musical,” Blum said. “It’s funny, with plenty for both kids and adults to laugh at, but there’s also a message to the tale.” The two-hour holiday stage romp tells of Buddy, played by Blum, who is a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities force him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. Blum, who was an understudy for the role of Elder Cunningham on Broadway for “Book of Mormon,” said he finds his “real life” constant smile and instant optimism, remain factors for his stage casting. “My agent submitted my name for the ‘Elf’ auditions last spring and I wasn’t sure I’d be what they were looking for,” he said. “The description for my character is this tall, more than 6-ft. guy and I’m only about 5’9” at the most.” “Chicago audiences are going to be a great way to welcome our big month of December run of performance dates.”

Will Blum as Buddy in the national Broadway tour of “Elf the Musical” playing in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre until Dec. 22.

Blum is especially proud about what he describes as “dazzling and creative sets to help tell the story.” “The sets are all beautifully handpainted and are made to look like a giant pop-out book that unfolds right before the audience’s eyes,” he said. “We’ve found a wonderful way to tell this story.”

Black Friday

John Luke, the times

Shoppers lined up early to cash in on super low prices at Target on Black Friday.

It’s all in the planning ‌ hristine Bryant / C chrstnwriter217@yahoo.com

‌E

ach Thanksgiving, Dana Parker wakes up and begins gathering coupons. Though many stay at home, safe from the crowds that will fill the stores and the malls beginning as early as tonight, Black Friday is one of the most exciting times of the year for Parker. “I look forward to this every year,” she said. “They all think I’m nuts, but this is my favorite time of year.” Parker doesn’t just spend her Black Friday each year shopping, however. As assistant manager of the Old Navy at Town Square shopping Center in Schererville, Parker spends part of the day on the other side of the counter — as an employee. “I’ll either go shopping and then come to work, or I go to work and then go shopping,” Parker said.

Retailers are counting on die-hard shoppers like Parker — ones who even when they have to work, make time to hit the stores in search of the best bargains. In fact, the National Retail Federation expects holiday deals to drive 140 million shoppers to stores and online this Thanksgiving 4-day weekend, and stores are pulling out all the stops to be competitive this season. Like several retailers this year, JC Penney is opening earlier than ever. Doors will open in locations throughout Chicagoland at 8 tonight. “Last year, we didn’t open our doors until 6 a.m. (Friday), and many of our shoppers came to our door to find they were locked,” said Ann Marie Bishop, spokesperson for JC Penney. “Our customers told us they wanted to shop and we listened.” Old Navy will open at 7 tonight and won’t close until 11 p.m. Friday, while most Macy’s locations will open their

doors at 8 tonight and won’t close until 10 p.m. Friday. “Following the success of last year’s midnight opening, our customers asked for expanded hours,” said Lauren Dolan Rapisand, media relations manager for Macy’s North and Midwest regions. Even retail stores like Bass Pro Shops plan to open early, with the

outdoor recreation store opening at 5 a.m. Friday at its Portage, Gurnee and Bolingbrook locations. “We have a 6-hour sale on Black Friday that will have people lined up to get inside,” said Tammy Sapp, spokesperson for Bass Pro Shops. “There are amazing deals at our stores with things that everyone in the family will want to find under the tree — from jeans to

smokers to toys for the kids.” This year, Bishop said JC Penney will bring back a popular holiday tradition from years past — offering Disney snow globes at 4 a.m. Friday. “We have some customers who have collected them for years,” she said. With more than 35,000 associates hired company-wide for the holiday season, JC Penney spends months prepping for the holiday rush — much of which store associates will see this weekend. “There’s a lot of preparation to get ready for this busy time,” Bishop said. “It’s exciting to see customers shopping in the stores and finding gifts for people on their lists.” Old Navy also is planning special deals as a reward for those willing to stand in line in the frigid cold, waiting for doors to open. The company is offering customers a chance to win a million dollars, and Parker says Old Navy is offering one of the best deals it’s ever had for Black Friday shoppers, though that deal is top secret until doors open. Though 33 million are expected to shop today, along with another 96 million on Black Friday, according to the National Retail Federation, several thousand more must work this holiday weekend to make sure doors are open for eager shoppers. Several associates, however, are offered incentives to give up their holidays, and many take the opportunity to earn extra pay and be a part of the hysteria the day offers. Macy’s, for example, surveyed store associates in advance, giving them an opportunity to share their preferences. The store is offering overtime pay to those who work tonight and until their shifts end. “Well over 90 percent of our opening selling shifts are being filled by regular associates who volunteered or did not indicate a specific schedule preference,” Rapisand said. She said, in fact, many associates prefer working Thanksgiving evening and overnight so they can be home or with family and friends on Black Friday. Parker said Old Navy puts up a sign-up list to help accommodate everyone’s schedules, and adds it fills up fast, with many choosing to work on Black Friday. “It’s the hustle and bustle,” Parker said. “All of the employees like it.”
