Mary Mary to spread gospel spirit in Gary ‌Eloise Marie Valadez / Eloise.Valadez@nwi.com

T

he harmonious and spirited sounds of sibling singers Mary Mary will light up the stage Friday in Gary. “This is one of the acts we’ve been wanting to bring to the area for awhile,” said Mark Spencer, president of Mas Media 7 and director of West Side Theatre Guild. Mary Mary, comprised of sisters Erica Atkins-Campbell and Trecina “Tina” Atkins-Campbell, are Grammy-Award winning gospel singers whose contemporary gospel sound have won them much praise from critics and fans alike. Spencer’s Mas Media 7 is presenting the show, which the director said is bound to be one of the must-see productions of this season. He called the gospel sound of the pioneering Mary Mary not only poignant and powerful but one that encompasses various genres and greatly touches the hearts of listeners. “We also have other gospel artists performing that evening,” he said, adding it’s a full night of uplifting and inspiring entertainment. Mary Mary, whose name was sparked by the Bible’s Mary, mother of Christ, and Mary Magdalene, released their first album “Thankful” in 2000. Their latest album “Go Get It” was released in 2012. Their albums “Mary Mary” and “Incredible” have received Gold status on the charts. Television fans also had a chance to see the siblings on their own TV series

titled “Mary Mary” which debuted on WEtv in March of 2012 and ended in February 2013. Among songs fans can expect to hear during Mary Mary’s show are “Shackles (Praise You),” “Something Big,” “Incredible,” “Ordinary People,” “God Bless,” and more. Spencer has said, with the many concerts and productions he currently brings to the Region stage, his aim is to always “promote that the arts are alive and vibrant in Gary.” In the fall, Spencer also put Gary in the entertainment spotlight when he brought gospel icon Shirley Caesar as well as The Rance Allen Group to West Side Theatre. In addition, on the same day, he presented Tito Puente Jr. at Wirt-Emerson Theatre Auditorium. Spencer said his mission with all of the productions he presents is to “serve the community one performance at a time.” FYI: Mary Mary will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at West Side Theatre, 900 Gerry St., Gary. General admission tickets are $35 with a limited number of VIP tickets available for $50. Call (219) 293-5224 or visit eventbrite.com.

‘A Mother’s Breath’ helps local rocker’s family get by ‌Tom Lounges / beatboss@aol.com‌

‌L

ocal musician Dave Dodge of the popular Northwest Indiana club band Flashpoint and his family are discovering the true meaning behind those Beatles song lyrics about getting by with a little from friends. The Region’s music community is coming together this Saturday in support of Dodge and his family to take part in a special fundraiser that will feature performances by Flashpoint, The Shift, The Robots, Joe & Doc, Liz Horvath & Friends, The Dirty Mac, Bad Cadillac, The Goodrich Trio, The Picks, Little Daddy Blues, and Chicago Bob’s All-Stars. Other musical guests are expected to be added to the line-up of talent right up to the day of show. The local rocker’s wife Sharon Dodge is currently living with COPD, a very severe and sensitive lung condition for which she will soon undergo lung transplant surgery. All proceeds from Saturday’s “A Mother’s Breath” event at The Track Lounge (318 North Jackson) in Crown Point will go toward the needed home repairs, modifications and improvements necessary to accommodate Sharon’s current and future health needs. “My family and I have been taken back by the outreach and generosity of those who have taken part in the planning arrangements, those who have volunteered, and those who have donated and pledged donations. This whole process wouldn’t and won’t be possible without all of you. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts,” said David Dodge in a prepared written statement. “A Mother’s Breath” is a 21 and older event starting at noon and ending at 9 p.m., with plenty of live music, food, silent auctions, raffles and a cash bar. A $20 donation is requested. More info: (219) 765-8042 and online at: mothersbreath.tumblr.com

Intriguing ‘then and now’ slot machine facts J‌ ohn G. Brokopp jbrokopp@comcast.net‌

‌T

he dramatic evolution of slot machines extends beyond technological advancements. Today’s computer-driven games are also masters at manipulating the people who play them, thanks to the ingenuity of the researchers, mathematicians, and marketing specialists who develop them. There is much value in exploring the differences between slot machines “then and now” to better understand how companies have designed the games to entice people to play them. Then: Getting a winning combination of symbols across the pay line on a traditional spinning reel slot was just that; a winner. You won more

money than you bet. Now: Today’s multi-line video and reel slot machines yield winning configurations of symbols that pay less than the amount of the bet. In other words, you spin a winning combination but lose money. There are video and audio effects to celebrate “the win.” It’s all a subliminal marketing strategy to make players think they are winning when in fact they’re really losing. Look at it this way: If you get a winning configuration of symbols on every spin that pay you less money than you bet, you’ll ultimately go broke. What you did accomplish was fulfilling the goal of gaming companies to keep people on the machines for longer periods (time on device) in the hopes of entertaining them in exchange for extracting more of their cash. Then: The ultimate goal of everyone who played slots was hitting the jackpot, that unique set of symbols across the pay line that gave you the biggest win possible. Now: The introduction of the bonus round on multi-line video and reel slot machines dangles a tantalizing but illusive carrot in front of slot players. Instead of playing for the jackpot, people play for the bonus round which, depending upon the volatility of the machine, comes much more frequently than a jackpot. Virtually every gaming company has been highly successful with the bonus round concept as a way to drive revenue on machines. Some manufacturers have made the bonus rounds highly interactive. That is, players can make touch screen choices which determine, to a certain extent, the amount of the bonus they’ll receive. Other companies, such as Aristocrat, keep their bonus rounds as simple as awarding winning players a block of “free spins”. Sometimes the result is significant, other times it’s a bust, keeping in mind that the outcomes of bonus rounds are not based on random spins but rather on “bonus

reels” that are ruled by the machine’s internal computer program. No matter what the design of the bonus round, they are specifically designed to entice players to “chase” them. Just as it was never good advice to chase jackpots, neither is it good advice to chase bonus rounds.

BONUS ROUND-UP: Blue Chip: Area blackjack players will be delighted to learn tournament play has returned every Saturday in December. Registration for the Blue Chip’s Blazin’ Blackjack Tournament begins each tournament day at 11 a.m. The tournament starts at noon with the final table set for 5 p.m. The entry fee is just $20 with unlimited re-entry for $20 after each round is completed. The prize pool is dependent on the number of entries. Hollywood Joliet: Secret Santa Saturdays are scheduled Dec. 14 and 21 for your chance to win a gift valued at up to $300. Swipe in to enter at Club Hollywood or a kiosk between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. each promotional day to activate your entries. Earn one entry for very five points earned. Two winners will be randomly selected every 15 minutes between noon and 8 p.m. Horseshoe: Did you know that the Shoe makes it easy for you to enjoy a beverage while playing your favorite game? Simply touch the “beverages” button on the Total Touch interactive screen. You’ll be able to select a beverage just the way you like it from an extensive list. Your order is routed to the bar followed by quick delivery by a server. Play with your Total Rewards card inserted and a history of your past orders will appear. Majestic Star: Every Friday during December from noon to 5 p.m. is time to get in on a $5,000 slot tournament held on level three of Majestic Star I. The top 20 scores receive a share of $5,000 in Promo Cash.

or decades, Pete Basala’s home in the 3000 block of Crane Place in Hammond has been synonymous with holiday decorations and Christmas cheer. This year is the 26th season that Basala has turned his home — and the homes of four neighboring houses — into “Peteyville”. The stretch of homes are decorated with tens of thousands of lights, dozens of inflatables, a sleigh and reindeer, a giant greeting card and a Ferris wheel. The home has it’s own radio station that visitors can listen to, featuring an original song about the home as well as answers to the most frequently asked questions. The Peteyville Facebook page has more than 1,000 “likes.” Basala turns the lights on Thanksgiving night, and weather

permitting, they go on every night through New Year’s Eve. Although the display takes weeks to put up, it can come down in about 10 hours on New Year’s Day. Although the home used to be just a local attraction, the rise of social media has created an increase in the volume of traffic past his home. Last year, he said he had visitors from around Northwest Indiana, as well visitors from as far away as South Bend, Michigan City, Naperville and Rockford, Ill. ntertainer Ron Hawking is a famous and favorite stage attraction for his vocal stylings, all-star performance repertoire salute to great

names. Last year, he jammed-packed two exclusive New Year’s Eve performances at Theatre at the Center in Munster with audiences sampling his “Copa Chicago” show to spend the night enjoying the best of Ray Charles and Lou Rawls, as well as nods to Frankie Valli, Bobby Darin, Kenny Rogers, Burt Bacharach, Billy Joel and Roy Orbison. This year, he’s returning and bringing Frank, Sammy and Dean with him to the same stage at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts on Ridge Road in Munster “A year ago, I was in the middle of producing a new show and Theatre at the Center audiences got the first taste of what I’d come up with,” said Hawking, who now has a host of specialty shows he performs at venues around the country, including the popular “His Way for the Holidays.” But as a special treat for Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana audiences, he’s welcoming the new year with a return to his signature show that skyrocketed him to the top as an in-demand headliner. “I think they are billing my show this year in Munster as ‘a revival,’ “ Hawking said. “But I don’t know if the word ‘revival’ is even necessary. Frank and his voice and songs have never left. They are always around as audience favorites.” Hawking, who refers to himself as

“a musical messenger,” is familiar to fans because of the six year run of his successful and critically acclaimed show in Chicago called “His Way — A Tribute to the Man and His Music,” paying homage to the late and great Frank Sinatra. In addition to the two performances on New Year’s Eve, he is also presenting a string of three more concert the next weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In 2007, Hawking unveiled a new hit stage show that began to showcase the range and variety of his musical impersonations, staged at his familiar Windy City performance home Mercury Theatre. Called “The Men and Their Music,” it included iconic numbers from many great male vocalists including Paul Anka, Barry Manilow and others. During his New Year’s Eve performances at Theatre at the Center, which also includes the option of a buffet dinner seating at the theater prior to the show start, Hawking also promises to host a vocal return for his signature Las Vegas headliners that have become his claim-to-fame. “If I’m bringing Frank, then I have to have Sammy and Dean with me, because I can’t disappoint my favorite trio,” said Hawking, who has back-up singers to help create an even more dazzling stage effect. When it comes to the business of using his voice to spread messages, Hawking is an old pro. Long before he made his name on the Chicago stage, he earned his reputation as one of the most soughtafter jingle singers and commercial

voice-over artists in the country. His is the voice behind hundreds of TV and radio commercials, including providing the distinct voice of Starkist’s Charlie the Tuna, impersonating the voice of Jimmy Durante in commercials for Kellogg’s Frosted Mini-Wheats — and recreating Louis Prima’s vocal talents for Progresso Soups, Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” for Subaru and Nat King Cole’s signature “Unforgettable” for Hershey’s. “There are so many people who only know me from my Frank Sinatra tribute, so I decided the time was right to share Sinatra again not only with his fans, but also with a new generation of fans,” said Hawking, who spends as much as two years before unveiling his new shows. He has performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall with the Philly Pops Orchestra and has opened for such notables as Carol Channing, Sheena Easton, Robert Klein and The Temptations. Of all the greats Hawking impersonates so precisely, Davis is one of the few he actually met. “It was just a handshake after one of his concerts at the old Mill Run,

but I did get to meet Sammy Davis,” he said. “And even though I never actually met Sinatra, I did get to see him in concert a few times.” The walls in Hawking’s office also spotlight some star-studded photographs of the singer with other legends such as Shirley MacLaine and Tony Bennett. And even though he occasionally has played famous venues in Las Vegas and Reno as part of what he calls “corporate gigs,” Chicagoland remains his “main stage.” “The shows I do are intended to keep music and memories alive,” Hawking said. “No one can fill the big shoes of the big entertainers of our time.” WHAT: Ron Hawking‘s “His Way — A Tribute to the Man and His Music” New Year’s Eve and Weekend Performances • WHEN: 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. concerts New Year’s Eve and 8 p.m. Friday, Jan3 • WHERE: Theatre at the Center, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster • HOW MUCH: Individual tickets start at $55 and a New Year’s Eve buffet package is available for $79.50. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his missing brother.

On the last day of the first manned mission to Mars, a crew member of Tantalus Base believes he has made an astounding discovery – fossilized evidence of bacterial life. But a routine excavation turns to disaster when the porous ground collapses and he falls in.

Director: Spike Lee

Director: Gary Fleder

Fearless optimist Anna teams up with mountain man Kristoff and his reindeer Sven in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.

OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of Joe Doucette, a man who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement, for no apparent reason. When released, he begins an obsessive mission to find out who imprisoned him.

Hoping to escape his troubled past, former DEA agent Phil Broker (Jason Statham) moves to a seemingly quiet backwater town in the bayou with his daughter. However, he finds anything but quiet there, for the town is riddled with an underbelly of drugs and violence.

DINING

Teibel’s presents favorite meals in holiday setting ‌Eloise Marie Valadez / Eloise.Valadez@nwi.com‌

T

eibel’s restaurant has long been a bright dining spot in the area. During the holiday season, the eatery remains a Region dining hot spot not only for its menu of favorite staples but for its festive decor including sparkling trees and toy trains to snowmen, toy soldiers and colorful lights. The restaurant, co-owned these days by Stephen and Paul Teibel, is celebrating its 84th anniversary. Diners regularly visit the eatery, which stands on the corner of U.S. 41 and Route 30, in Schererville, for not only lunch and dinner meals but for party feasts during the holidays and throughout the year. Holiday time, according to the owners, has always been a big hit with the Teibel family and that shows in the interior and exterior decorations which abound at the restaurant. “Every year there are a couple of additions and a couple of pieces that are retired,” Teibel said, adding his father Stephen has been collecting holiday decorations for the past four decades. During a recent Sunday luncheon at Teibel’s, the eatery was filled with diners enjoying a meal with friends, family and co-workers. We were seated in the middle of the room and ordered from the special holiday menu which had a variety of items. “Our holiday menu has our staple dishes as well as specials,” Teibel said. “It’s a nice blend of items we’ve had in the past and a couple of things for the holidays.” Our choices for entrees included the signature Teibel’s Chicken Dinner ($16.95) and the combo Chicken and

P h o t o b y E l o i s e M a r i e Va l a d e z

Chicken and perch are staples at Teibel’s.

Lake Perch ($25.25). The fried chicken and lake perch have long been popular at the eatery and are the two dishes Teibel’s is most famous for. Both entrees came with a choice of soup or tomato juice, tossed salad or relish plate (starring cole slaw, cottage cheese and pickled beets), roll, potato or rice and ice cream. We chose the relish plate and enjoyed that appetizer portion with Teibel’s special dinner rolls, which are so favored by diners the restaurant also sells them separately on the premises and also makes them available at various grocery stores. Our meal ended on a sweet note with a dish of peppermint ice cream. Among other items on the special holiday menu this season are a Roast Turkey Dinner ($18.95); Honey Bourbon Salmon ($19.95); Center Cut Pork Chops, ($18.50); Broiled Filet Mignon ($30.95); Frog Leg Dinner ($20.95) Gulf Shrimp ($21.95) and more. Kid’s meals are also available at the restaurant. FYI: Teibel’s restaurant is located at 1775 U.S. 41, Schererville. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. Call (219) 865-2000.
