Beefing up basic blackjack strategy ‌John G. Brokopp / jbrokopp@comcast.net‌

t is crucial for basic strategy blackjack players to ascend to the next plateau if they are committed to being as successful as possible. The next plateau is keeping mental track of the cards that have been dealt. Since the odds during a blackjack game continually fluctuate, card tracking is the only way to take advantage of situations where the advantage tips in favor of the players. Master players have keen mathematical skills. They make a science out of card tracking and invest countless hours practicing. The time investment the masters make is beyond the capabilities of a majority of recreational players. There is an alternative system that’s simple and easy to use. Because it isn’t scientific, you won’t get the precise count that the masters get. You will have an idea of how the “middle game” is balanced in relation to the players as a collective group and the house. The model for the system is a sixdeck game. The 10-value cards and the aces are the most powerful cards for players. There are 120 such cards in a six-deck shoe, constituting 38 percent of the 312 total cards. To employ the system, you must stop being a passive player and learn to be an aggressive, observant player. This means that in addition to paying attention to your own hand, you must make note of the hands of all the other players and the cards that have been dealt. When a new game begins, keep mental track of the 10-value cards and

aces that are dealt. After two decks have been played (you’ll be able to estimate by keeping an eye on the dealer’s discard stack) your count will be extremely valuable as you proceed through the next two decks of the game. If your count of 10-value cards and aces is 38 after two decks have been played, it means the game is proceeding at an even keel and the advantage hasn’t tipped in either direction. If your count is under 38, it means there are a higher percentage of those cards remaining to be Read more played which can tip online at the advantage to the nwi.com/go players. If your count is over 38, it means a higher percentage of those cards have already been dealt and the advantage has tipped in favor of the house. Keeping a separate count of the aces is a bonus. It is only with aces that players can be dealt a blackjack. There are 24 aces in a six-deck shoe. Eight aces should have been dealt after two decks to keep the game even. Any less means the middle game could be exciting, any more means the chances of getting a blackjack during the middle game may have decreased. There is bound to be a phenomenon known as “card clumping” whereby concentrations of equal value cards may be found. You must also take into account, depending on the casino, that as many as two decks are cut out of play. Finally, even if you detect a player’s advantage has emerged, remember it is based on players as a collective group. If the table is full, not everyone is going to be dealt a 20 or a blackjack. But you at least you’ll know your chances have increased.

From Pat: Made-toorder pie

high energy, great stunt work, good makeup, several running gags that weren’t too bad and a screenplay made out of almost thin air, would be such a disappointment. (The movie still made $91 million.)

The best, the worst, the hits, the misses, the surprises and the biggest moments of the year

7. Worst Weather Moment: June.

I don’t remember the temperature getting above 60 degrees the whole month, although the research may never be complete, because this is way too depressing to continue on.

8. Worst National News: The Sequester that Grounded Air Shows.

We do not live in Washington, New York or other centers of big time political conflict and consequence. So, how come we were so impacted by the cuts that were never supposed to happen in the first place? It is a mystery that continues, but in the meantime, the biggest, best and most breathtaking planes and pilots are off the stage for now.

1. Best Food Trend: HalfPrice Wine Wednesdays.

A trend that began in a few years ago became stronger in 2013. Ciao Bella, in Schererville, implemented the mid-week discount this year with an award-winning wine list that includes a broad selection of Chiantis, a brilliant list of Reserve Reds and house-branded Pinot, Chardonnay, White Zin, Cab, Merlot and Italian Sangiovese.

2. Other Best Food Trend: A Reverence for Well-Rendered Pie.

The year 2013 may always be remembered as the year Hoosier Mama Pie took off, but made-to-order bakery pies are nothing new in Northwest Indiana where independent bakers thrive and grocers stay competitive with house-made goods that can stand up to the most deluxe concoctions of locally-sourced ingredients. Try ordering from Timbrook Kitchens in Munster.

3. Big Screen Hits: Civil War Brought to Life. Though the re-ignited interest in the Civil War has been led by award-winning movies like “Lincoln,” “Django Unchained,” and “Twelve Years a Slave,” new books are on continual roll-out—many due to anniversaries inside

The Newsroom on HBO ended with Mac and Will getting engaged again. Don’t get me wrong, this is not to take away from Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer who are great and Aaron Sorkin is a terrific television writer and there were many episodes I loved and I’m thrilled that there will be a third season, but the ending? Just a relief about the Mac and Will melodrama, and did anyone ever believe they were all going to quit—and what, maybe start their own show like Mad Men started their own advertising agency? Really? On the other hand, Downton Abbey’s sweeping exodus and killing off main players was over the top. Why not try a Doctor Who-type metamorphosis and just hire another actor to play Matthew? While I applauded the surge in pace at the end of the Game of Thrones season and the slaughter episode was an amazing shock to the casual viewer, the series still ended with a solid shrug.

Yes, there is a certain amount of guilt about laughing at the impaired but that goes away when the history stories are told ridiculously by famous actors and actresses and their friends who are known to not have permanent

5. Big Screen Misses: The Lone Ranger.

Probably the most interesting thing about Johnny Depp is that the movies he makes are so unpredictable. The only constant seems to be that his makeup artists do well at the Oscars. No one anticipated that the “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” released in July of 2006 would make more than $520 million. Or that “The Lone Ranger,” in spite of

1. The Eagles, who performed Sept. 20 at United Center in Chicago. The iconic group, masters at mixing rock and country, performed their show in a semi-chronlogical fashion highlighting their musical history in not only song but video and live commentary. The group made their way back to the Chicago-area Oct. 19 for a concert at Allstate Arena in Rosemont. 2. Paul McCartney, who performed his “Out There” tour July 14 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and July 16 at Miller Park in Milwaukee. The former Mop Top was in fine form on this tour as he delivered Beatles’ hits, Wings favorites and solo McCartney tunes. 3. Bruno Mars, who performed July 13 at United Center in Chicago. The pop singer, who burned up the charts this year, proved he’s a triple threat on the live stage. Mars showcased stellar dance moves, strong vocals and talents on guitar and drums. 4. Most unexpected death: Acclaimed chef and culinary icon Charlie Trotter dies at 54 on Nov. 6 at his Chicago home.

5. Favorite health trend: Superfood Kale emerges as one of the hot culinary trends of the year. 6. Favorite ongoing food saga: Tammy Pham’s Siam Marina in Calumet City’s River Oaks Mall closes its doors during the summer, with a promise to reopen in Tinley Park in the new year. We are patiently waiting! 7. Most unexpected resurgence: The reopening of Miller Bakery Café in Gary. 8. Most exciting restaurant we can’t wait to try: The opening of Eataly, a major Italian food market and eatery, in Chicago. By Tara McElmurry

1. Best food/drink trend: Craft beer

Craft breweries seem to be popping up everywhere around the country and right here in the Region. It may seem like overkill to some or too “hipster” to others, but as far as I’m concerned this trend is pushing brewers to come up with even more unique and delicious flavors to enjoy. Dark Lord Day, anyone? Or how about a nice, smooth Crown Brown?

1. Big Screen Hits: So Much Sci-Fi. From “Star Trek: Into Darkness” to “Ender’s Game” and “Thor: The Dark World,” Sci-Fi and fantasy movies dominated the box offices this year. Luckily, 90 percent of the cinema offerings were fantastic and left us wanting more.

2. Best thing on TV: The Walking Dead

2. Small Screen Blockbusters: The 50th anniversary of any TV show is nearly unheard of—even the longest-running American shows rarely last more than 10 years. “Doctor Who” proves that it can keep viewers of all ages interested, for generation after generation.

Although it didn’t start this year, “The Walking Dead” continues to bring thrills to my Sunday nights. I don’t know how those writers do it, but just when you think everything is going to be okay, the Governor comes back. And that last episode before the winter break? Heads did roll.

3. Worst Weather Moment: Big Thunderstorm/ Tornados on Nov. 17

Most of the Region and Chicagoland area came out of that storm unscathed, but my family in Morton, Ill. know 10 families in Washington, Ill. who lost their entire homes.

4. Best sequel (so far): Catching Fire

Disclaimer: I still have yet to see the second Hobbit and “Anchorman 2.” Although I really enjoyed “Thor 2” and have high hopes for the two listed above, I still think “Catching Fire” will come out on top. Based off the second book in the Hunger Games series, I think the filmmakers did a great job transitioning the story from the page to the silver screen.

5. Most shocking deaths (of my generation): Paul Walker and Cory Monteith

These tragic, untimely deaths are a reminder to not take things for granted.

6. Best athletic trend: Cycling/Triathlons

This trend may just be within my personal circle of friends and family, but it seems to be getting more popular. My boyfriend participated in a local triathlon at Crown Point High School

From Katie: Daft Punk this past fall. My family and I also rode in a few Pint Night rides with the Schererville Trek Store this summer.

7. Best health trend: Green Drinks

Before you gag in disgust, give them a try. Depending on what you put in the blender, they can be very delicious. I started drinking them in the summer after my dad made me one. Now, I drink one almost everyday. My current favorite: baby spinach, bananas and pineapple juice.

From Katie: Scifi on the big screen

From Eloise: Charlie Trotter

8. Best performance on stage: Book of Mormon

I was able to catch the show while it was in Chicago, and it was wonderful. The story and actors made you laugh out loud as well as think deeply about some of the metaphors/ exaggerations presented on stage.

9. Biggest moment in music: Beyonce crashing iTunes.

Queen Bey sure knows how to play her business. I loved her stealthy approach and personal production of this release.

10. Biggest architectural development: The new Lake Central High School

As an alumnus of the tri-town high school, I’m very impressed at the new building. I can’t wait to take a walk around to see what future students will be taking advantage of while they learn. One of my old teachers told me I won’t even recognize the place once the demolishing of the old parts and construction of the new parts are finished.

3. Most disappointing death: To me, the saddest celebrity death of 2013 is Joan Fontaine. The well-publicized feud between Fontaine and her sister, Olivia de Havilland, made many people wonder why these two lovely sisters couldn’t get along. Who was the instigator? And why, after so many years, did animosity still reign? I suppose we’ll never know. And now the world has lost another one of the treasures from Hollywood’s golden age. 4. Best Food Trend: Truffle oil. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve consumed so much truffle oil this year I feel I’ve started to permanently smell of the stuff. I can’t get enough of it. 5. Best Drink Trend: While in Europe this summer, I was introduced to one of this year’s most refreshing and popular drinks — the Aperol spritzer. Slightly bitter yet sparkingly sweet, this drink will keep you cool on a hot day and impart a touch of Italian sophistication to any cocktail aficionado. 6. Worst National News: The Boston Marathon bombing. This tragedy still leaves me speechless, not least because a year of intense scrutiny later, we still know very little of the perpetrators’ motives. Rolling Stone’s ill-considered Dzhokhar Tsarnaev cover fed the controversy that lasted long after the fateful race day was over. 7. Best Album of 2013: “Random Access Memories” by Daft Punk. Although the album’s popularity waned in the U.S. after the band’s snub of Stephen Colbert, for me it will forever be the soundtrack of the summer of 2013.

arle Howe, vice President of Hammond Community Theatre, is proud of the support and dedication of both the collected talent on stage and the eager audiences who make his productions a success. His says the group’s mission statement, proudly displayed on their web site, is simple: “To foster, promote, and increase the public knowledge and appreciation of the arts and cultural activities in the City of Hammond, Lake County, Northwest Indiana and surrounding communities for the enjoyment of the organization’s membership and audiences.” This month, anchored at their familiar partnership performance venue Beatniks on Conkey at 418 Conkey Street, just blocks east of Hohman Avenue in Hammond, they just completed a successful run of “Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol,” written by Tom Mula and directed by Howe and his wife Betty. “We presented this same play in the past and we’ve had audiences asking for us to bring it back,” Earle said. “So the time seemed right to make it our holiday stage offering.” Billed as a “coffee house and black box theater,” Beatniks, located in Hammond’s Hyde Park neighborhood, is a great fit for Hammond Community Theatre according to Earle. It was the Howes, and the active membership of their theater group, working together recently with the Hammond Community Corporation for assistance with the new seating risers for the audience area at Beatniks

in addition to new seats courtesy of help from office of Hammond’s Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.. Earlier this month, Hammond Community Theatre hosted auditions for Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap,” the longest running play in England. It will run at on the Beatniks stage for two weekends, Feb. 7 to 9 and 14 to 16. The play involves a group of strangers stranded in a boarding house during a snow storm, one of whom is a murderer. The suspects include the newly-married couple who run the house, a spinster with a curious background, an architect who seems better equipped to be a chef, a retired Army major, a strange little man who claims his car has overturned in a drift, and a jurist who makes life miserable for everyone. Into their midst comes a policeman, traveling on skis. The cast includes three women and five men. The Hammond production is being directed by Valerie Wotkun. “What makes this play even more interesting is how popular it has remained throughout the decades,” Earle said. “The film rights to the stage story were sold long ago, on the contingency that the film couldn’t be made until after the stage run. We’ll, this is a play that has been running ever since it started, so no film has yet to be made.” Hammond Community Theatre is a 501©3 non-profit Indiana corporation For more information or to become involved, visit hammondcommunitytheatre.org or Beatniksonconkey.com or call (219) 852-0848.

special New Year’s Eve show at 10:30 p.m. Eastern Dec. 31 at Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, Mich. During a recent telephone interview, Loggins said he’s only performed a few New Year’s Eve shows through the years. “I have five kids and the holidays have always been very precious. I like to keep the holidays with my family,” he said. Area fans, however, will have the opportunity to celebrate the festive season at the popular musician’s show

which will feature a variety of his signature tunes, spanning various facets of his career. “We’ll be doing a lot of the hits,” he said, adding the holiday favorite “Auld Lang Syne” will also be on the list. Expect Loggins chart toppers such as “Danger Zone,” “Celebrate Me Home,” “I’m Alright,” “Whenever I Call You ‘Friend,’” and “Conviction of the Heart” as well, among others. Loggins, a native of Washington state, was introduced to music fans first as part of the duo Loggins and Messina during the 1970s and later catapulted onto the charts as a soloist turning out hit pop, soundtrack and even children’s tunes. In addition to touring as a solo act, Loggins currently also tours with country trio Blue Sky Riders. The band, formed in 2010, features Loggins, Georgia Middleman and Gary Burr. For the Four Winds show, however, Loggins will perform solo. The singer said it’s been a rewarding experience touring and making music as part of Blue Sky Riders. The group released a holiday album this season titled “Finally Home for Christmas.” Also a current highlight for Loggins is his collaboration on a new “Frosty the Snowman” project. “It’s a book and CD all in one package,” he explained, adding the project was published by musician Peter Yarrow’s company. The book features illustrations by Wade Zahares and a 3-song CD by Loggins. When asked by Yarrow, of Peter, Paul and Mary fame, to be a part of the “Frosty the Snowman” project, Loggins said he was eager to participate. “What he (Yarrow) does as a publisher is very high quality,” the singer said. Loggins, who has had success with the children’s albums “Return to Pooh Corner” and “More Songs from Pooh Corner” said songs marketed to the younger set never go out of style. SEE LOGGINS, PAGE 10

Bodeans bring ‘Good Things’ to ’14 ‌Tom Lounges / beatboss@aol.com‌

T

he Bodeans have been Midwest rock perennials since 1983 when they broke out of Waukesha, Wisc. and stole across the border and became a major part of the Chicago music community and ultimately a national success story with their break out 1985 debut LP, “Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams.” Powered by a string of hits – “Good Things,” “You Don’t Get Much,” “Stay,” “American,” “All The World,” “Closer To Free” — and seemingly endless energy, these 30-year regional music veterans will ring in yet another year this Dec. 31 with guitars in hand on stage at The Copernicus Center (5216 West Lawrence Avenue) in Chicago at the official WXRT 93 FM New Year’s Eve Bash. Opening the show will be The Westies, the new full on electric band project anchored by renown Chicago singer/songwriters Michael McDermott and Heather Horton, also featuring members John Pirruccelo, Mike Davidov, Robert Dickie and Dan Ingenthron. More info and tix at: copernicuscenter.org or (773) 777-8898. Although there will be plenty of champagne drinking, dancing and reveling taking place all across Chicagoland in clubs, pubs and bars, here are a couple of options close to home to consider that sound like fun. Front Porch Music (505 East Lincolnway) in Valparaiso – as much a social gathering place for local musicians as it is a school and retailer – once again offers a place for the “under 21 crowd” to ring in the new year. “Our annual New Year’s Eve Open Stage (8pm) will be hosted by Mami Matsuda, and yes it will be a pajama party again,” notes FPM owner Chad Clifford. “Come in your favorite pj’s and slippers. There will be a toast with non-alcoholic champagne at midnight.”

LOGGINS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9

Quality songs for the younger set will always be popular because “people still keep having kids. That’s something that doesn’t stop,” he said.

This event usually focuses on under 21 performers, many being students of the school. Artist sign-up starts at 7:30pm with a $4 (performer) and $5 (patron) cover. More: (219) 464-4700. Those 21 and older might want to thaw out from the unseasonably cold winter the region has been having by “going tropical” at the “Cheeseburger in Paradise NYE Party” at St. Mary’s Hildebrandt Hall in Griffith featuring the classic rock party band, Mr. Funnyman. “This will be a fun evening,” said event promoter Garry Mang who encourages revelers wear beach attire like flowers shirts, sandals and shorts. “All the cheeseburgers you can eat, served until 11:30pm with a champagne toast and giant balloon drop ($20 advance/$25 at door).” Doors open at 7:30pm. A cash bar for margaritas and draft beer is available. More: (219) 712-6419.

Loggins said he’s thankful for how music fans have favored his work through the years. “I appreciate it very much. It’s great to have had this 40-year career.” For Loggins, touring and making music remains something he enjoys. His inspiration, these days, simply comes from performing and working.

MUSIC NOTES: • The news of Chicago radio personality Larry Lujack’s death after a long battle with cancer is of great sadness. Mr. Lujack’s biography – “Superjock” – was a major inspiration to me personally in pursuing my dream of becoming a radio “jock,” which has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of my ever-evolving career in the entertainment field. Thanks Larry for being the voice that kept me company while delivering The Times as a teenager in the 1970s and for unwittingly inspiring me to chase the microphone. If there’s a rock ‘n’ roll heaven… Ol’ Uncle Lar is there tossing a record on the turntable to keep St. Pete’s toe tappin’! • Chicago-based rock duo THADDEUS PROJECT’s sixth career album, “Sweet Dreams,” is an 8-song set of original songs deserving attention. Although this writer has enjoyed earlier TP albums, this is TP’s best overall effort to date from the creative partnership of guitarists/composers TED PUTBRESS and GLENN

“I love to sing and it’s nice to keep writing and recording. It keeps me young and happy,” Loggins said. 47 RONIN

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY

Director: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen

Director: Carl Rinsch

Director: John Wells

INSIDE LLEWELLYN DAVIS follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles—some of them of his own making.

Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to actionadventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts.

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name made its Broadway debut in December 2007 after premiering at Chicago’s legendary Steppenwolf Theatre earlier that year.

American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) who is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting.

Having survived the first part of their unsettling journey, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his companions (Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage) continue east. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood Elves, Bilbo and the dwarves journey to Lake-town and, finally, to the Lonely Mountain.

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge.

Madea gets coaxed into helping a friend pay her daughter a surprise visit in the country for Christmas, but the biggest surprise is what they’ll find when they arrive. As the small, rural town prepares for its annual Christmas Jubilee, Madea dishes her own brand of Christmas Spirit to all.

With the 70’s behind him, San Diego’s top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), returns to the news desk in “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.” Also back for more are Ron’s wife and news team, all of whom won’t make it easy to stay classy…while taking the nation’s first 24-hour news channel by storm.

Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his missing brother.

Foo Noodle Bar Horseshoe Casino delivers Asian fare ‌Eloise Marie Valadez / Eloise.Valadez@nwi.com‌

sian specialties star at Foo Noodle Bar at Hammond’s Horseshoe Casino. For visitors who are only familiar with the casino’s lavish Village Square Buffet, the fine dining eatery Jack Binion’s Steak House or Benny’s Pub & Eatery, where burgers and shakes have a starring role, it may be time to explore another culinary option at the entertainment mecca. Diners who are fond of Asian cuisine will find authentic dishes on the menu at Foo Noodle Bar. Various Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and other Asian recipes, which are reasonably priced, are featured at the casual eatery. Foo Noodle Bar is tucked into a corner of Horseshoe Casino, not too far from the high limits area, so it may be a little tricky to find if you’re not familiar with the cavernous casino. Once you enter the restaurant, though, the aromas of Asian spices and ingredients easily stir up one’s appetite. Foo Noodle Bar is not a huge restaurant and has a little more than a dozen seats around the open kitchen area in the center of the room and tables along one side of the eatery. During our visit there, guests seemed to eat their hearty offerings pretty quickly and then vacate tables in less than a half hour. The food is delivered to diners in a timely fashion here as well, perhaps with the idea of getting one more quickly back onto the casino floor. We were seated at the bar in the room’s center which proved to be a comfortable seat with a view of the whole restaurant. After reading the menu, which features an explanation of dishes in English and Chinese, we decided on a few items. We began with the Beef Stew Noodle

Soup, ($12) and also ordered the Grilled Lemon Grass Beef with Rice Vermicelli ($12) and Cashew Chicken ($12). Foo Noodle Bar’s Beef Stew Noodle Soup proved a hefty offering which was just perfect for a cold day. The Grilled Lemon Grass Beef, served with lettuce, carrots, cucumbers and vermicelli on the side, was a flavorful dish with a delicate use of spices. The Cashew Chicken, served with rice, featured a hint of sweetness and proved satisfying. Among other dishes at Foo Noodle Bar are Teriyaki Chicken Wings ($12); Salt and Pepper Pork Chop ( $12); Pot Stickers ($9); Turnip Cakes ( $9); Fillet of Fish Congee ( $12); Vietnamese Pho ($12); Roast Duck Noodle Soup ( $14) and Dumpling Noodle Soup, $12. FYI: Foo Noodle Bar is located at Horseshoe Casino, 777 Casino Center Drive, Hammond. Call (866) 711-7463 or visit horseshoehammond.com
