his Sunday afternoon at 3pm, a story that began 58 years ago with a Christmas gift that changed the life of a young boy will come to life in the very city where it all began, as “The Signal: A Rhapsody” is presented on stage at The Gary Aquatorium on the lakefront of Gary’s Marquette Park. That young boy was Henry Farag whose sleepy eyes opened wide when he un-wrapped an old-fashioned crystal radio on a frigid Christmas morning in 1956. “The Signal: A Rhapsody” is a live family-friendly musical presentation featuring the legendary groups The Soul Stirrers (the backing group for Chicago R&B icon Sam Cooke) and The Spaniels (famous for one of the most radio-played oldies of all time, “Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight”), along with Farag’s own doo-wop revivalist group, Stormy Weather. Tickets are $10. The production tells the story of Farag’s journey in music and how that radio ultimately took him from the rundown house at 1132 Whitcomb Street he shared with his parents and 10 siblings, to touring the world and performing four times at the White House in Washington, D.C. with Stormy Weather. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Farag recalls in his book, “The Signal” (published in 2001 by Indiana University Northwest) that for the entire week after Christmas he worked and worked to put together his radio. One clear, cold and starry evening the radio crackled to life. “I heard a

woman talking and I heard a song,” Farag recalled. Once over the thrill of making his radio work, a new thrill set in for the youngster when a series of odd vocals sounds like — “Ooom papa mow mow” and “doe doe de doe doe” — came through the speaker. Farag had discovered the street corner sound of doo wop music, the pre-rock ‘n’ roll urban music of inner city folks from New York, to Chicago, to Philadelphia, to the rough and tumble turf of Gary. The woman’s voice who introduced him to this exciting music was future Gary music legend Vivian Carter. Carter was a DJ on Gary radio station WWCA at the time and the owner of the fledgling local music label, Vee Jay Records; the recording home to some of the first doo wop groups Farag discovered, including The Dells out of Harvey, Ill. and his hometown future legends, The Spaniels. Farag eventually became close with Carter and the artists on her label, becoming friends with many of them, especially The Spaniels’ founder/lead singer/songwriter James “Pookie” Hudson. For Farag and many vocalists who grew up in the 1950s and early 1960s in Gary, the Aquatorium holds a special place in their hearts. “We call it ‘the Cathedral of Echo’ because it had just the right echo for singing as we grew up,” he explained. For that reason, Stormy Weather, The Spaniels and The Soul Stirrers will revisit their old music rehearsal haunt on Sunday to give something back to “the old girl” for all she did for them so many years ago. “I brought up the idea of having us get together for this show at The Aquatorium to Greg Reising who is a board member of The Society, the group who run, maintain it and publicize the place. Greg wanted to do it. So on Sunday, Feb. 16 we’ll debut the show there.” “The Signal: A Rhapsody” — an all original production Farag has written and produced — tells the tale of life in Gary and the rise of what is now called “The Street Corner Sound” of the urban vocal groups. The presentation is similar to what the creators of “The Million

Dollar Quartet” assembled to tell the famous story of the four biggest stars of Memphis’ Sun Records. “I call it a ‘rhapsody’ because I am prone to ad lib and improvise as I tell the story,” said Farag, who supplements live singing segments by narrating the story behind the music that inspired him to look beyond the steel mill future he seemed destined for and instead become part of the harmonious sound that caught his ear the night his crystal radio crackled to life. “The Signal: A Rhapsody” reflects back upon and honors many famous artists who contributed to the “Street Corner Sound” legacy, including Jerry Butler, The Impressions, Jimmy Reed, The Dells. It tells the story of their music in an improv setting of musical and historical celebration and it is fitting that the first performance takes place Sunday in the landmark building, the Gary Aquatorium, which contributed to the legacy. hile the nation celebrates the most significant of musical anniversaries this month, fans in the Region also have the opportunity to mark The Beatles’ 50th anniversary of coming to America in a grand way. Fab Four tribute band American English will transform the stage of Star Plaza Theatre to Beatles land as the group performs a special Valentine’s Day concert Friday in Merrillville.

The show, presented by Lakeshore Public Media, features a celebration of all eras of Beatles’ music, from early Fab Four to Abbey Road days. “This will be our fourth year in a row there,” said Eric Michaels, the performer who portrays Paul McCartney in the band. Michaels said Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland audiences, in general, have been loyal admirers and regularly attend American English shows.
Friday’s concert, he said, is significant for a number of reasons. First of all, he noted it’s a fundraiser for Lakeshore Public Media and ticket sales will assist in supporting The Lakeshore Public Radio 89.1 FM. “It’ll be a great weekend and a fun show,” Michaels said. He’s thrilled the concert coincides with the dates 50 years ago that the Beatles first hit American soil. In a recent press release from Lakeshore Public Media about the concert, James A.

Muhammad, president and CEO of Lakeshore Public Media, said “American English is a great way to remember The Beatles and a huge opportunity for Lakeshore Public Media to rekindle Beatlemania in Northwest Indiana and support our mission of educational programming.” American English performs more than a hundred dates every year and gets a great deal of repeat audience members to join in their Mop Top celebration. “It’s an accomplishment to celebrate 50 anything. And it comes once in a lifetime. It’s a hallmark of the strength of The Beatles,” Michaels said, about the fact their music continues to live on and interest in them never wanes. Michaels said portraying McCartney in American English is an honor. The band, he said, respects the Beatles’ music, talents and personalities and always strives to do justice to them. Michaels believes the public’s continued attraction to The Beatles comes down to the music first and foremost. “You’ve got to love the music. You never get tired of it,” he said. American English’ concert will be a multi-phase show. Their first set will chronicle “The Ed Sullivan Show” songs and also feature some of
the songs from “A Hard Day’s Night,” Michaels said. “It’s also the 50th anniversary of the release of ‘A Hard Day’s Night,” he added. Other Beatles’ musical periods American English will deliver in the two-hour concert are the Sgt. Pepper’s era, Abbey Road and Let It Be days. Michaels praised area fans and Midwest fans, overall, for their support and for “getting” what they do. “We would be nothing without them. They keep us working,” he said. “We love the people of the Midwest.’ American English has been paying tribute to The Fab Four for two decades now. Michaels said they’ve had the same lineup in the band for the past five years. Interest in The Beatles surely spans the generations and Michaels and his bandmates even see that at American English shows. “It’s being handed down from grandparents and parents to kids.” The performer said American English strives to give “a good history” of The Beatles’ music. He encourages fans at the shows “to take it all in” and enjoy.

here is something extra special about the Broadway musical “Chicago” for actor, singer and dancer Drew Nellessen. “It was the very first Broadway show I ever saw,” said Nellessen, who is once again part of a national tour, his third time touring in the stage hit, which is playing it’s namesake city later this month. Trained dancer-actors know that the jazzy moves of master choreographer Bob Fosse are critical to their education and experience. Nellessen, a 2003 graduate of Valparaiso High School and a May 2007 graduate of Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., spent nearly two years in the spotlight for the step-by-step favorite choreography feat when “Chicago” last played the Windy City on tour in 2009. As a member of the Broadway tour of “Chicago,” Nellessen traveled the world, performing in Thailand and other exotic destinations, as part of the ensemble. And just like the last tour, Nellessen is sharing the stage with John O’Hurley of “Dancing with the Stars” notoriety, who plays slick, singing attorney Billy Flynn. For this latest run, Nellessen is also playing an attorney, Aaron, the mouthpiece who must defend Hunyak, the Hungarian murderess who faces hanging for doing-in her husband “who had it coming.” The tour run plays Bank of America Theatre in Chicago Feb. 25 until March 2. “Even though I live in New York

City and have my apartment there, I’ve always known what a great theater city Chicago is,” said Nellessen, son of Ann and Dan Nellessen of Valparaiso. So when producers from Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre in Lincolnshire, Ill. put out a casting call in 2010 for a new production of the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning musical “A Chorus Line,” Nellessen was ready to get in line and was cast for a plum role for the two month-run in September 2010. Nellessen in the role of Bobby, a young, quirky and promising dancer. He played Bobby, who uses humor to hide his unhappy childhood and confesses his hobby is secretly re-arranging other people’s furniture. Next, he dusted off his passport for the international tour of “West Side Story” playing the roles of Riff and Diesel. While on this national tour of “Chicago,” last September, Nellessen
stopped by his college alma mater between opening engagements in St. Louis and Peoria to meet with senior musical theater majors to discuss a variety of industry related topics. He also taught a “Fosse master class” to students enrolled in Theatre Dance and Upper Level Jazz and Ballet classes. Most recently, he also served as the performing dance captain for the recently revised production of “Good News” at the prestigious Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. “The focus for musicals is entirely on the ability to connect with the audience as each character shares his or her story and background,” Nellessen said. At tour stop in Chicago is also special to Nellessen, since the large and grand stage spaces served as his “outside the classroom” education preparing him for his one-day career. “It means a lot to me because these are the Chicagoland theaters I grew up going to with my parents,” Nellessen said. He is also hopeful that he could be spending this summer in Chicago, if cast in new adaptation of “Brigadoon,”
the musical by Alan Jay Lerner, with music by Frederick Loewe to be directed by Chicago’s own Rachel Rockwell in the Albert Theatre at Goodman Theater June 27 to Aug. 3. An unforgettable musical adventure comes alive in a bountiful hailed as an artist of “astounding and very rare talents” by Chicago Tribune. “Brigadoon,” which launched on Broadway in 1947, details the story of American tourists Tommy and Jeff, who get lost on vacation in Scotland and stumble into Brigadoon, a mythical village that appears for only one day every 100 years. As the plot details, no “outsider” can stay in Brigadoon unless they fall in love, and no resident can ever leave or the village will vanish forever. So when Tommy falls for a village girl, he is forced to choose between returning to the world that he knows—or taking a chance on life and love in the mysterious Brigadoon. am always reading about different things that you should have on you bucket list; skydiving, traveling, learn a musical instrument, and perform in front of a crowd. I have already been skydiving; I have been to Cancun, Vegas, and Alaska; I don’t really care for musical instruments, so all that is left is to perform. On February 20 starting at 7pm my dance partner, Hannah Pender, and I will be performing in front of a crowd at the Radisson Star Plaza in the Celebrity Ballroom. The Dancing with the Local Stars program is based on the TV version, but the cast of characters is made up of locally-familiar faces. All five pairs will

perform and be judged by the National Dance Council of America and by crowd noise. Each amateur dancer has received ten free private dance lessons with a local professional instructor. The other 4 amateurs are: Melissa Bohacek from Northwest Indiana Community Action; Dave Pishkur, a teacher and Varsity Baseball Coach at Andrean; Rosa Maria Rodriquez, a financial secretary from United Steelworkers 1010; and Michael Feldman from Unilever. All proceeds from this event will go to support the United Way charity foundation. The competition also includes a professional ballroom dance competition in the morning. with Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Schererville and Valparaiso. Outside of weddings and middle school dancing in gym class, I haven’t danced a day in my life, so as you can tell Hannah had her hands full. We start each lesson with a warm up, which leads right into our routine. Hannah taught me our routine in about six different parts, and she made sure that we didn’t move on until I had that part memorized. Now we can run through the whole thing with minimal problems or mess-ups, and we are working on the technical things that make it
look good. We are doing a form of the rhumba, which I have learned is more difficult than you would think. You have to able to focus on your feet, hips, hands, arms, and partner all at once and ensure that they all move properly. I actually look forward to my dance lessons, and get excited when they are coming up. Never in a million years would I think of myself as a dancer, but I have fun doing it and it is very challenging and rewarding, especially because it’s all for a good cause. ABOUT LAST NIGHT 1 hr 40 min | R | Released Feb. 14
Director: Steve Pink Based on the classic romantic comedy of 1986, which itself was based on the 1974 David Mamet play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” the 2014 film brings a modern outlook to this timeless story. In this version, starring an all African-American cast including Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, Joy Bryant, Christopher McDonald and Paula Patton, the audience follows two new couples who journey from the bar to the bedroom and encounter the real world in between. This version is set in sunny Los Angeles rather than frigid Chicago, and promises to be a fun and lighthearted examination of the motives that drive men and women on the search for a relationship. Kevin Hart’s recent popularity seems set to continue as About Last Night becomes his second large box office draw in the last eight weeks.
