orthwest Indiana author and songwriter Ken Churilla is among the Chicagoland celebrities dancing their way closer to a cancer cure next month as Arthur Murray Presents “The Dancing with Chicago Celebrities — Pink Carpet Premiere” ninth annual charity ball to fight against breast cancer. The all-star 7 p.m. event happens March 7 at Hyatt Regency Chicago (151 E. Wacker Drive). Net proceeds benefit the Northwestern Memorial Foundation, directed to an innovative research effort focused on a breast cancer vaccine trial, and Imerman Angels, a non-profit group helping provide 1-on-1 support among cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers. Among those stepping out on the ballroom floor is Highland, Ind., native/resident Ken Churilla, a long time local/national music journalist this columnist once mentored, who is also a songwriter by night and the Director of Marketing for Balmoral Park by day. Churilla, a 1990 Highland High School graduate recently authored his first book “No One Said It Would Be Easy: A Husband’s Journey Through His Wife’s Battle with Breast Cancer,” with celebrity endorsements from the likes of country music star Gretchen Wilson and former White Sox great Ron Kittle. Other regional celebrities – to be paired with a professional partner provided by Arthur Murray Dance Centers – include Daniella Guzman of NBC 5, Kris Gutierrez of CBS

MUSIC NOTES: • Chicago broadcast legend and Radio Hall of Famer Dick Biondi will host an old-fashioned “sock hop” March 1 presented by The Carmelite Home of East Chicago from 8pm to Midnight at The Wicker Park Social Center (8554 Indianapolis Blvd.) in Highland. Cost is $20 with a cash bar. Advance tickets only, no walks ups. More info: (219) 397-1085. • The Hobart Jaycees may move their popular annual “Jaycee Fest” to a new location this summer after several years spent rocking the Strack & Van Til grocery store parking lot on U.S. 6. The length of the beer ‘n’ bands-driven fest may also

be cut from 10 to 4 days if the event (tentatively scheduled June 26-29) is relocated to Hobart’s Rugby Field across from Festival Park. • Scott May – long time member of the iconic Chicagoland group, The Ides of March – has just stepped out with his debut solo CD, “Outside The Inside,” an 11-song original music collection largely performed all on his own. Scott does get some nice assistance from his capable band — The Scott May One-Armed Orchestra – and The Ides’ horn section on my favorite song, “Love Song 369,” which he lovingly dedicates to his wife Chris May. Adding guest vocals on the tune are two ‘80s Chicago pop stars in their own right, Sandy Caulfield (of Tantrum fame) and Thom Griffin (of Trillion fame). More thoughts about video poker

‌W ‌John G. Brokopp‌

hen you play video poker, the result you obtain after making a bet and initiating a play is a random event that determines whether you

have won or lost. The dictionary defines random as “of or characterizing a process of selection in which each item has an equal probability of being chosen”. Because of this, video poker is generally regarded as the best casino game to play over the long haul if expert strategy is used with an optimum pay table. The very nature of the game makes this possible given the fact that cards are randomly “dealt” from a virtual computer program driven deck. There are precise mathematical calculations that can be made based upon the hand you are dealt and the cards that remain. Video poker results are governed strictly by random generation of cards. There is no internal software program which controls the cards you get on the deal or the cards you get on the draw. Remember that when you are dealt 3-ofa-kind, the one card you need on the draw to make it a premium paying quad is among the 47 cards still be shuffled in the virtual deck. When you discard two cards from your dealt hand, you have two chances to get the card you need. Clearly the odds are against you drawing

n w i .co m /g o

that card. The good news is that when it does happen, it makes you forget about the times it didn’t. Which brings us back to the random factor that governs video poker play: How are players able to rationalize a losing session or even a prolonged losing streak if they play an optimum pay table using expert strategy? Every player knows the frustration of being dealt numerous 3-of-a-kind hands during a session of play and never drawing to a 4-ofa-kind. Every player knows the agony of only sporadically completing a 4-to-a-flush hand or drawing two pair and failing to complete a full house. There are those fortuitous sessions where you can’t do anything wrong. The card or cards you need pop more often than not, even when your 3-card draw on a pair of aces results in the other two aces and the kicker to boot! Is randomness thrown out the window just because you are not achieving the results you desire during each and every playing session? No, not really. John Robison, a nationally recognized gambling authority, has written eloquently on the subject. “There are cycles on machines, but who ever said that cycles disprove randomness? On the contrary, streaks (referred to as local non-randomness) are a requirement of randomness. “If an event is random anything can happen,” Robison cautions. “That includes long cold streaks, long hot streaks, short streaks, and choppy results.”

ctor and singer Michael Goodman says playing the role of Johnny Cash, “Young Johnny,” to be specific, is an intimidating challenge while trying to capture not only the legendary vocal sound, but also a larger-than-life personality. Dubbed “the Man in Black,” which was the name of his 37th album released on Columbia Records in 1971, he stood 6-ft 2-inches.

Goodman plays “Young Johnny” in a dual lead performance with Kent Lewis playing “Johnny Cash” in the Chicagoland premiere of “Ring of FireThe Music of Johnny Cash” starting previews tonight at Theatre at the Center in Munster and opening Sunday night for a run through March 30. “Johnny Cash lived his life and career in his own way and was a strong presence in every way both on stage and off,” Goodman said.

“He ranks as a man with his own unique style that connected to others through his music.” From the iconic songbook of Cash, who died far too soon at age 71 in September 2003, comes this unique musical about love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and home and family about a man with a personality and talent so big, it takes two people to portray him on stage.

More than 35 of Cash’s hit songs including “I Walk the Line,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison Blues” along with the title tune, paint a musical portrait of Cast that the show’s director Brian Russell promises is “a foot-stompin’, crowd-pleasin’ salute to the uniquely American Legend.” Jeff Award-winner Cory Goodrich stars as Cash’s also talented performing wife June Carter, who died at age 73 in May 2003. direction is by Malcolm Ruhl for the Theatre at the Center production. “This is the story of this country music legend, but as told through the performances of his songs and music,” Russell said. “Our cast playing the roles of Johnny and June and the others share the stage with some very talented musicians.” Four talented multi-instrumentalist/ performers round out the cast: Greg Hirte, Billy Shaffer, and William Underwood join Ruhl. “The only other run of this musical I know of anywhere close to our area is when The Milwaukee Repertory Theater did ‘Ring of Fire’ a year ago last March,” Russell emphasized. “So I don’t consider Milwaukee, Wis. close enough to be a Chicagoland premiere, compared to having it staged as a fresh production right here on stage in Munster, which is just 30 minutes from Chicago. So yes, in my mind our production really is the Chicagoland premiere. And we’ve added new elements, like a piano and drums to the stage.” Russell describes the production as “a musical revue that guides audiences on a journey through Cash’s storied life and celebrated music, from the cotton fields of Arkansas to the Grand Ole Opry.” The show was created by Richard Maltby, Jr., conceived by William Meade, with orchestrations by Steven Bishop and Jeff Lisenby. “We have not set out to impersonate

n w i .co m /g o

Johnny Cash, we are celebrating Johnny Cash, and his incredible life of ups and downs,” Russell said. “This is someone who at age 10, had his brother Jack die. Later, Cash once said that when that tragedy happened, he recalled his father saying ‘the wrong son was taken from him.’ Cash’s incredible life is reflected in his music.” Russell said this version is a re-imagining of the original Broadway production, more intimate, but with a full musical soundscape. After successful test runs in outside cities, the production opened on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 12, 2006 but closed only one month after opening, with critics attributing the result as the show booked into a theater too large for the intimacy of the show. The original Broadway production featured Tony Award winner Jarrod Emick as Cash. While Cash is primarily remembered as a country music artist, Russell reminds the entertainer’s style spanned from gospel to folk, rock to blues, and country sandwiched in between it all. Russell, working with musical director Malcolm Ruhl, cast Goodman as “Young Johnny,” realizing he had grounded talent for singing and acting, as well as a history with “the identity of Johnny Cash.” When he was cast, Goodman, 35, was at the time playing the role of Cash in Chicago’s long-running stage hit “Million Dollar Quartet,” which he left in November after two years of

playing the Man in Black. Originally from Bowling Green, Ky., Goodman moved to Chicago nearly four years ago and studied at the famed Second City comedy stage. “It was really because of word of mouth that I auditioned for this production of ‘Ring of Fire,’” Goodman said. “The musical director Malcolm had never even met me before.” Goodman grew-up around country music legends since his own father worked as a “banjo picker” sharing the stage with many famous names, including many performances at The Grand Ole Opry. “I have many photos from when I was kid with these legendary Grand Ole Opry stars,” Goodman said. “I don’t have any photos of myself with Cash, so if I ever did cross paths with him when I was just a kid, I have no recollection. But my family was very good friends with Bill Monroe, and I recall I attended his funeral back when I was still so young, I had no idea what a legend he was.” [Monroe died at age 84 in 1996.] The design team for “Ring of Fire”

includes Scenic Designer Angie Miller; Lighting Designer Shelley StrasserHolland; Sound Designer Barry G. Funderburg; Costume Designer Brenda Winstead and Props Designer Jessie Howe. Theatre at the Center Artistic Director is William Pullinsi and the stage manager is Rebecca Green, with Technical Director Ann Davis. “One of my favorite photos I have from growing up is at the Grand Ole Opry with Minnie Pearl when I was 2-years-old,” Goodman said. “I wasn’t sure who she was at the time, but what I knew was she seemed like such a nice lady with a big smile.” WHAT: “Ring of Fire- The Music of Johnny Cash” • WHERE: Theatre at the Center at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster • WHEN: Starts previews today, opening night performance Sunday and continues until March 30 with performances 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays, with select Thursday night and Saturday matinees. • HOW MUCH: $40 — $44. • FYI: (219) 836-3255 or TheatreAtTheCenter.com with group discounts are available for groups of 11 or more and gift certificates also available. Beatniks continues ‘Monologues’ production

Jennifer Pellar, from left, Rachel Livingston and Abigail Michelle perform in “The Vagina Monologues” at Beatniks on Conkey.

onnie Johnson, director of Hammond’s Beatniks on Conkey’s fundraising production of “The Vagina Monologues,” has an idea why the women-themed play has been a smash with audiences throughout the world. “It touches so many women, and men, in so many ways,” she said. “Each and every monologue has a powerful message. Some are funny. Some are very clever. Some touch the heart. They all hold their own with the strength of their message.” Running Feb. 22 and 23, “Monologues” is a series of soliloques which both seriously and humorously chronicle a myriad of women’s issues, on both personal and global scales. Penned by American playwright Eve Ensler, “Monologues,” which was originally based on interviews with more than 200 women, was a sensation when it was first staged in 1996. Ensler has regularly updated her “Monologues” in the years since, and productions of the play have found audiences throughout the globe. Beatniks’ 2014 “Monologues” production marks their seventh annual staging of the play. More than a dozen region-based thesps are lending their talents towards “Monologues” this year.

“Every actress brings their own touch to their performance,” Johnson said. “Every (actress) has their own take on it, or has their own memory or experience in life, or knew somebody (who has experienced what is being recited). Everybody has their own feeling, their own touch from their heart, on that monologue, and that makes it powerful.” In what has also become tradition for Beatniks, proceeds from their production of “Monologues” will go to Hammond’s Haven House, which is a shelter for domestic violence victims. Ensler created “Monologues” as a vehicle for theater companies throughout the globe to raise awareness for organizations such as Haven House as well as for the V-Day Foundation, created by Ensler to end atrocities and violence toward women worldwide. Proceeds from Beatniks’ “Monologues” will also benefit the V-Day Foundation. Due to mature language and subject matter, “Monologues” is not recommended for young or sensitive audiences. FYI: “The Vagina Monologues” will be presented at 8 p.m. Feb. 22 and 5 p.m. Feb. 23 at Beatniks on Conkey, 418 Conkey St., Hammond. Cost is $25. Call (219) 852-0846 or visit BEATNIKSONCONKEY.COM

nother year has passed, and instead of marking the time with milestones like birthdays or anniversaries, some of us mark it with movies. So once again this year, we present picks in every category. Best of luck in your pools!

Best Picture The nominees: 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, The Wolf of Wall Street Things got complicated when “12 Years a Slave” and “Gravity” tied at the Producers Guild of America awards, which is the best predictor of what will win the Oscar. But the thinking is that it’s between “Slave” and “American Hustle” with voters likely to reward “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuaron. “Slave” is just too important of a film to be denied. MattE’s pick: 12 Years a Slave

(American Hustle), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) McConaughey wasn’t considered a frontrunner in this category early on. It was first Bruce Dern after last spring’s Cannes Film Festival. Robert Redford had some buzz, but was snubbed. Ejiofor looked good. And then McConaughey won at the Golden Globes and SAGs. Now he’s a virtual lock, though Ejiofor is lurking as an upset candidate. MattE’s pick: Matthew McConaughey

Actress in a Leading Role The nominees: Amy Adams (American Hustle), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena), Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) I didn’t love “Blue Jasmine.” But Blanchett’s performance truly was magnificent. Adams’ performance in

Directing The nominees: Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), David O. Russell (American Hustle), Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) What Cuaron did with “Gravity” was absolutely remarkable. He’s even on record as saying he has no idea how he and his crew accomplished such a technically difficult piece of filmmaking. His only underdog challenge would come from McQueen if “12 Years a Slave” has its momentum carry across the board. MattE’s pick: Alfonso Cuaron Actor in a Leading Role The nominees: Christian Bale

“12 Years a Slave” had been considered a frontrunner for Best Picture Oscar, but has received competition from both “Gravity” and “American Hustle.”

“American Hustle” is the one I loved the most this year, and she presents the closest competition right now for Blacnhett, who has cleaned up at all the precursors. MattE’s pick: Cate Blanchett

Actor in a Supporting Role The nominees: Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) Leto has led this thing pretty much wire-to-wire, and there’s no reason to think he won’t be on stage for his first Oscar. The pressure is off the rest of the pack on this one. MattE’s pick: Jared Leto Actress in a Supporting Role The nominees: Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County), June Squibb (Nebraska)

The talk in this race is whether the Academy voters will want to give Lawrence Oscars in two straight years at such a young age. That, and there’s always love for awarding a new face on the scene – and that’s Nyong’o. Frankly, for me, it’s a tossup, and they’ve each won at several key precursor awards. But Nyong’o may have a slight edge. MattE’s pick: Lupita Nyong’o

Writing (Original Screenplay) The nominees: American Hustle (David O. Russell, Eric Singer), Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen), Dallas Buyers Club (Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack), Her (Spike Jonze), Nebraska (Bob Nelson) This seems to be a two-film race between Spike Jonze’s imaginative “Her” and “American Hustle,” yet another home run for David O. Russell after last year’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” this time with co-helmer Eric Singer. But Jonze won at the writers’ guild, and that gives him the edge. MattE’s pick: Her

Writing (Adapted Screenplay) The nominees: 12 Years a Slave (John Ridley), Before Midnight (Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke, Richard Linklater), Captain Phillips (Billy Ray), Philomena (Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope), The Wolf of Wall Street (Terence Winter) This one is a little tricky. Ten of the past 15 years, the winner of the Writers Guild of America award for adapted work goes on to win the Oscar. That was “Captain Phillips” this year. But “12 Years a Slave” was not eligible under the WGA’s criteria – and given its acclaim everywhere else, it probably would’ve won. So take your pick. MattE’s pick: 12 Years a Slave Animated Feature Film The nominees: The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest & Celestine, Frozen, The Wind Rises For the first time, Disney out on its own, without Pixar by its side, looks like a slam dunk for “Frozen.” The good thing is, it’s more than deserving. (But if you have a chance to see “The Wind Rises,” do so.) MattE’s pick: Frozen

P h o t o c r e d i t: M a r y C y b u l s k i

The Wolf of Wall Street

Documentary Short Subject The nominees: Cavedigger, Facing Fear, Karama Has No Walls, The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life, Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall The shorts are always a crapshoot, but they could win your Oscars pool for you if you nail them. “The Lady in Number 6” may have a little more resonance with voters than “Cavedigger.” MattE’s pick: The Lady in Number 6

American Hustle, The Grandmaster, The Great Gatsby, The Invisible Woman This is a tough one, but the elaborate party gowns and formal wear of “The Great Gatsby” could be a winner for Catherine Martin over the great 1970s get-ups Michael Wilkinson put together for “American Hustle.” But “12 Years a Slave” could surprise here. Martin won an Oscar for another Baz Luhrmann film, “Moulin Rouge!” MattE’s pick: The Great Gatsby

Cinematography The nominees: The Grandmaster, Gravity, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, Prisoners “Gravity” seems to have been preordained to win here. You can pencil it in for the first Oscar for Emmanuel Lubezki, who has worked with director Alfonso Cuaron on five previous films. MattE’s pick: Gravity Costume Design The nominees: 12 Years a Slave,

Documentary Feature The nominees: The Act of Killing, Cutie and the Boxer, Dirty Wars, The Square, 20 Feet From Stardom “The Act of Killing” is an absolute mesmerizer despite its horrific content. The leaders of the 1960s genocide in North Sumatra reenact the murders they committed against the backdrop of film genres like musicals and westerns. It’s hard to imagine “20 Feet From Stardom” having enough to upset “Killing” here. MattE’s pick: The Act of Killing

or the past eight years, Memo’s Taco Mex has been bringing quality Mexican cuisine to Highland. Memo’s, which is located in Porte De Leau Plaza, is the brainchild of Guillermo (Memo) Munoz, who learned the art of preparing excellent Mexican cuisine from his mother. Munoz and his wife Martha run Memo’s Taco Mex. The restaurant is inspired by his parents Teresa and Carlos Martinez’ former eatery Taco Mex, which they opened in Chicago’s South Deering

neighborhood in 1987. Locals knew that South Deering eatery first as The Hamburger Joint before it evolved into Taco Mex. Through the years, various members of the family ran the restaurant and it even closed for awhile. (This writer was recently informed that the South Deering Taco Mex, which Munoz is not involved with, has reopened). During a past interview, Munoz said he began perfecting his cooking skills by preparing salsa which he’d watch his mother make. “You learn a lot from observing,” he said. At Memo’s, diners will find a variety of items, featuring everything from
