Nugent’s St. Holmes strips down songs for solo show

n recent years, Derek St. Holmes had been a key component of the “Voices of Rock” national tour that united famous singers behind famous radio hits; and rightfully so, since it was St. Holmes’ indelible voice that powered Ted Nugent’s biggest hits. That legendary voice will be unleashed on Sunday at Chicago Street Theatre as promoter Paul Braun pulls a real rabbit out of the hat with this latest installment of his “One Night Jam” concert series. “I really don’t do many of these shows where it’s just me and my acoustic guitar,” confessed St. Holmes. “Probably my biggest reason for doing this show is because I used to live in Chicago and getting back to that area is always appealing because it’s a lot of fun to get together with old friends.” “The cool thing about this kind of show is that people get to hear the song without all the bombastic craziness going on,” said St. Holmes. “They hear how it sounded when we first wrote it on acoustic guitars backstage or in some hotel.” Many do not realize St. Holmes contributed much more than just vocals on timeless FM radio classics like “Snakeskin Cowboys,” “Stranglehold,” “Cat Scratch Fever,” and “Hey Baby.” The singer also wrote or co-wrote many Nugent tunes and even laid down many of the famous guitar licks on those old records that most believe were performed by Nugent. Although St. Holmes is equally Sunday’s set list will be mostly Nugent material, but also include

songs from St. Holmes’ various side bands and projects. “I’ll probably do a song from St. Paradise album (a 1979 one album project with drummer Denny Carmassi of Montrose) and I’ll definitely do some from the Whitford-St. Holmes album (a 1980 project with Brad Whitford of Aerosmith),” said St. Holmes. Other tunes will come from his last solo release 2000’s “Then & Now.” When not playing dates with Nugent, he continues to perform shows with his own group, The Derek St. Holmes Band. “I just enjoy playing,” he said. “I’m getting ready to gear up the band for dates, because other than a 10-day Swedish rock fest, the Nugent group isn’t going out

this year (on the road) until the first week of July.” After taking a long absence from live performing, St. Holmes began popping up on selected live dates with Ted & Co. in 2008 and eventually returned full time to the gonzo guitarist’s side in 2010 to the delight of Nugent fans worldwide. “There was never any kind of issue between Ted and I. It wasn’t anything like that; I took the time away from it all because I needed to be with my family,” he said, reflecting on those years away from the public eye; years spent raising his kids and being by his wife’s side during her long fight against the cancer that finally claimed her. “I never left music,” stressed St. Holmes. “I just left the road for awhile, but I always was writing, playing and recording stuff at home.” His children now grown and busy making St. Holmes a very proud and happy grandfather, he is grateful to be back at Nugent’s side belting out the songs that made them both famous. “This morning I was sitting here at home playing with my grandkids who came to visit. Tomorrow I’m meeting Brad (Whitford) and the Nelsons in the studio. In a few days, I’ll fly out to see you guys in Chicagoland. he South Side’s most eclectic music club — FitzGerald’s at 6615 W. Roosevelt in Berwyn — continues to celebrate its 33rd anniversary by bringing two favorite artists back for consecutive nights of great music hot enough to melt away all memories of recent snow storms and frigid weather. The Marcia Ball Band will fire up the venue’s “20th Annual Jambalaya Cook-Off” first on March 3. Next up is C. J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band to give Fat Tuesday on March 4 a true Louisiana flavor. Marcia Ball was FitzGerald’s first national touring act back in 1981. Since then, the raucous piano great has returned year after year, bringing her brand of rollicking Golf Coast R&B, soulful ballads and Texas stomp. Ball has been nominated for several Grammys and has garnered scores of other awards during her career. Ball’s first set is 8pm with a second set after the “cook off” judging is completed and the winner crowned at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20. Truth be known, it was actually Marcia during her four-night stand in 1981 who convinced club owner Bill FitzGerald to book in more Louisiana music in his venue. One performer in

particular she suggested was Zydeco great Clifton Chenier who created a lot of excitement when brought to Berwyn for a four-night stand a few months later. Chenier, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the recent Grammy ceremony, returned to FitzGerald’s many times until his death in 1987. Since then, his son C.J. Chenier has carried on the tradition with the Red Hot Louisiana Band. The night begins with a traditional jazz set by Roy Rubenstein’s Chicago Hot 6 at 5:30 p.m., followed two sets by Chenier at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. “On Fat Tuesday, we will unveil a large framed photograph of Clifton Chenier taken by Chicago photographer Marc PoKempner during the Zydeco master’s first gig at FitzGerald’s, which will then hang in the club permanently,” reported Fitzgerald. FitzGerald’s celebrates Lundi Gras with the “20th Annual Jambalaya Cook-off Grand Finale,” featuring a competition between 10 past champions. Owner Fitzgerald is quick to note, “This will be the final year for jambalaya; gumbo is on the menu for next year.” As usual, free tastings will be offered of all entries. fter a world stage premiere in Dublin last October, director John McColgan realized immediately his new two-hour international salute to dance called “Heartbeat of Home” was meant to tour cities around the world. “This performance is a mulchcultural celebration that picks up right where ‘Riverdance’ ended,” said McColgan, speaking by telephone last Friday from his office in Dublin. “Audiences find this production to be heart-racing.”

Broadway In Chicago, McColgan and the producers of “Riverdance” are excited to have “Heartbeat of Home” make its U.S. premiere in Chicago for a run at the Oriental Theatre, 24 W. Randolph, for a limited two-week engagement March 4 to 16. “We did play Toronto in January, which was the first performance in North American,” McColgan said. “But our arrival in Chicago marks the U.S. premiere.” He said “Heartbeat of Home” is best described as a music and dance spectacular featuring the dynamic, vibrant components of traditional Irish, Latin and Afro-Cuban music

The show also employs highdefinition, cutting-edge projection technology and has an engaging narrative structure. Produced by Moya Doherty, devised and directed by McColgan with narrative and lyrics by award-winning Irish writer Joseph O’Connor. “When we marry the sexiness of salsa to the thunder of Irish dance, the lyricism of tango to the yearning of Sean-nós, what a night of storytelling we shall have,” are the welcoming words of O’Connor’s narration. The cast includes world-class Irish, Latin and Afro-Cuban dancers and with choreography by David Bolger, to create a dream-world of joyous, heartstopping, high-energy music and dance. “I say that everyone is a star in this show,” McColgan said. “From London to New York and in Dublin, we did an exhaustive open search for talent, with 10 of the dancers cast via an unprecedented online talent search resulting in a dancer roster that comes from the U.S., Canada, Australia and the UK. These dancers are the new generation bringing with them the versatility of other dance forms including tap, ballet, hip hop and street combined with their outstanding Irish dance skills. The online talent website received in excess of 2.2 million hits.” McColgan said a portion of the online auditions ask the dancing hopefuls to submit a minute and half video that not only showcased dance talent but also offered a nod to their home roots and scenery. “We had dancers who filmed

eff Casey, director of Hammond’s Towle Theater’s production of “Adrift in Macao,” has had nothing but fun with his cast being “Adrift” for their latest musical production. “This cast is phenomenal,” he said. “They’re very young and energetic, and it’s really fun to watch them on stage together. I laugh every night at rehearsal. It’s a very good time.” Opening Feb. 28 and running through March 16, “Adrift” chronicles the adventures of a handful of folks who make their way to Macao, China

for a humorous musical homage to film noir, a crime cinema genre popular primarily in the 1930s through the 1950s and a source of visual and thematic influence in more recent films such as “L.A. Confidential” and “Dark City.” “Adrift” was penned by American playwright Christopher Durang. Past Durang productions, such as “Why Torture is Wrong, and the ‘People’ Who Love Them” and “Baby with the Bathwater,” have been hits with area theater companies such as Hammond Community Theatre and Indiana Northwest University’s Theatre Northwest.

Featuring songs such as “Pretty Moon over Macao,” “In a Foreign City” and “Mambo Malaysian,” Towle’s “Adrift” staging marks the musical’s Northwest Indiana debut. The play made its debut off-Broadway in 2007. “Christopher Durang is, in my opinion, one of our brightest contemporary comedic writers in American theater,” Casey said. “His stuff has a quirky quality to it. He doesn’t take himself too seriously as a playwright. But while (his plays) are lighthearted, they’re also clever … once we read (the ‘Macao’ script), we saw that it maintained that quirky quality, and it also contained some really good music.”

ideo poker has been described by some groups that oppose gambling as being addictive. It derives this reputation because it is marketed as a game of chance that incorporates an element of skill. If any genre of electronic gaming device deserves to be accused of having obsessive qualities it would have to be the penny slots. The intriguing nature of the games is complex. They come in a wide variety of game formats that are attractive to the senses and to the nostalgic inclinations of “baby boomers”. They can cast a hypnotic spell on people who are lulled into thinking they are playing an entertaining game rather than gambling. They add an exciting interactive dimension that traditional reel slots never had. Penny slots are huge money makers for the casinos. The hold (casino win) dwarfs that of higher denomination slot games. Penny slots, because of the unit of currency required to play them, are perceived by the gambling public as “affordable”. Gambling neophytes and players on strict budgets are attracted to them, only to discover that they’re not the one-coin-ata-time mechanical antiques of yesteryear but rather computer-charged monsters with voracious appetites for money: As much as $1 up to $5 for a single spin. When you’re subjecting a couple of dollars to a 4.8 to 5.8 percent hold on dollar slots that’s one thing, but when you’re taking that same couple of bucks and exposing it to a 11.7 to 14.3 percent hold on one-cent play, you can see that the theoretical value of your gambling dollar is weakened appreciably by the penny games. When you play high denomination slots, the hold is comparable to the built-in house advantage found at table games, including roulette, Caribbean Stud Poker, and some bets at craps. he parties are already starting down in New Orleans to usher in Mardis Gras with beads and King Cakes, but up here in Northwest Indiana the Fat Tuesday preparations begin in the oven. Local bakeries are gearing up by taking orders and some are already offering the beloved, diet-breaking paczki. The Polish treat is basically a sugar Bismark pastry—or jelly doughnut— with more butter, egg yolks and sugar. The traditional flavors of paczki are apricot, prune and rose, said Craig Streicher, owner of Beck’s Crown Bakery in Crown Point. Though, he said his most popular flavor is the cream cheese filled paczki. “Our paczki stand out because they are authentic,” he said. Streicher uses his father-in-law’s paczki recipe, which has been in use since 1969. Last year, Beck’s sold between 800-850 dozen. They already have at least that many orders so far. “We also have an extreme paczki or paczki-on-steroids,” Streicher said. For this extra decadent version, Streicher said, the doughnut is split in half, lined with whipped cream, Bavarian cream on the bottom, and then filled with one of Beck’s pie fillings. Beck’s isn’t the only bakery putting a spin on the paczki. New this year, Calumet Bakery with various locations around the Region,

will be introducing a mango-flavored paczki. “I started making paczki when I took over the bakery in the 80’s, and they seem to get more popular around the area every year,” owner Kerry Moore said. “It think (paczki) is something different, and that’s why people like them.” Moore said sometimes the bakery would have 10 people packing up orders of paczki for more than 12 hours. He said they sell a couple thousand dozen each year. “If we run out of paczki and get more orders, we’ll just keep making more,”

Moore said. Continuously baking paczki is not the way Jean Theile does it at Branya’s Bakery in St. John. At Branya’s, customers have one day to get their hands on one of her square-shaped paczki because, like her recipe, Theile follows a long-standing tradition. Traditionally, paczki were only enjoyed on Paczki Day (Fat Tuesday), Theile said. “Paczki started in the old world by everyone going through their larders and getting rid of all the fats, sugars and preserves before Lent,” she said. “Today, I’ll give up Facebook or texting, but in the old days, people didn’t have those things. Their extravagance was the sweets.” The recipe Theile uses is from her busia (Polish for grandmother). “It had to be translated from Polish,” she said. “It’s straight from Poland and has probably been in use for more than 100 years. It’s the only recipe used in our family.” Theile’s paczki are square instead of the traditional round-shape to emphasize that hers are made from scratch and not from a box or mix. The same goes for her fillings. All

of the fillings in Branya’s paczki are homemade. Because they only sell paczki on Paczki Day, Theile said she and her husband are up for about 40 hours straight that day keeping up with orders. With all the popularity of paczki here, it’s almost baffling to travel just a state away or down to Indianapolis to find people don’t even know what the word means. Theile said paczki are so popular here because of the heavy Polish population. Streicher from Beck’s agreed. “The heavy Polish population and ethnic traditions of that culture spread from Chicago over to Northwest Indiana.” Polish or not, paczki seem to be deeply woven into the culture of NWI residents. t’s not difficult to feel right at home when visiting The Town Club Steak and Seafood Restaurant in Highland. Owner Mark Hines makes it a point to make sure guests are cordially welcomed to the eatery. In fact, he’s often on hand to greet diners and if he’s not, there’s always a friendly face to take his place. With his menu, Hines said he wants to continue to offer excellence and also variety. “We have something for everyone,” he said, about Town Club’s fare. While they specialize in seafood and steaks, guests will also find various specials at the restaurant and can enjoy everything from sandwiches and burgers to salads and ribs. The Town Club, currently celebrating its 67th anniversary, has been owned by Dyer native Hines and his wife Tina for the past 17 years. The eatery was originally established in 1947. Hines, who is the restaurant’s fourth owner, said in a past interview that although Town Club hasn’t been operated by the same family through the years, it is “the oldest restaurant under one name, under one roof in Northwest Indiana.” Among customer favorites at the restaurant are prime rib, lake perch, frog legs, barbecued ribs, ribeye steaks and donut shrimp. Town Club’s donut shrimp is best described as shrimp which has the inside and outside veins taken out. When the shrimp is fried, it curls and turns out shaped like a donut. The barbecued ribs ($21.95) are flavored with a special dry rub which Hines said is inspired by a friend’s family recipe and dates back 50 years. “We were also the first ones 3 years ago to introduce a 30-ounce bone-in ribeye for $37.95 for the whole dinner. Other restaurants just don’t have it (a special like that) or it’s all priced separately,” he said. Another special feature at the

quality ingredients are of utmost importance to Hines. “I also don’t have any farm-raised fish here,” he said, adding he serves fish that have been caught fresh every week. We visited Town Club on a recent Friday for lunch. The eatery, which was recently remodeled, proved a serene choice for a good late afternoon lunch. The interior, decorated by Hines’ wife Tina, had a warm, inviting look with browns, burnished reds, tans and golds throughout. Art work hangs on the walls and the decor has rustic winery-looking inspirations. Lunch items ordered were Tomato Blues ($6.95), a colorful salad featuring Beefsteak Tomatoes, red onions and bleu cheese; and lake perch, ($8.95 for the special lunch portion.) The salad, which was a good-sized entree salad, starred a light olive oil based dressing and the tomatoes proved sweet and juicy. The perch meal featured three perch filets and my choice of potato, which was

baked. A cup of delicately spiced clam chowder preceded the perch meal. While lunch entrees don’t come with Town Club’s relish trio, all dinners come with various relishes. A children’s menu is also featured. Among other items guests will find on the restaurant’s menu are sandwiches such as “Talk of the Town,” ($9.95) which is a huge chicken breast smothered in Swiss cheese and topped with ham and honey-mustard sauce; the “Big Bertha,” ($7.95), which is roast beef and cheese; Scallops ($18.95 for dinner); The Town Club Seafood Pasta ($15.95 for dinner); and Surf and Turf ($29.95 for dinner). Guests visiting Town Club will also find it has a type of retro and friendly “supper club” atmosphere. Diners will definitely feel welcome.
