Beatlemania impacted more than two generations of music makers

‌L

‌Tom Lounges / beatboss@aol.com‌

ove ‘em or loathe ‘em, The Beatles forever changed the pop music and culture when a flight from London to New York City brought them to American soil on Feb. 9, 1964 for their first U.S. television appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” “There will never be another Beatles,” said Chad Clifford of regional band, The Crawpuppies, whose sound owes much to The Beatles. “The fragmented, disposable structure of the music business, radio and media today has made another Beatles impossible. When there were only a few network channels and a few major radio stations, a group like the Beatles could have an impact. It was popular music’s ‘perfect storm’ we will never see again.” Storm is a perfect word for it. “Beatlemania” as it came to be called hit American shores like a hurricane 50 years ago this month when four lovable Liverpudlians – John, Paul, George and Ringo — in matching suits and sporting mop top haircuts enticed 73 million people to tune in CBS-TV to watch “The Ed Sullivan Show.” That’s 12 million more than had watched Elvis Presley’s first performance on the same program just eight years earlier. “I watched Ed Sullivan that night,” recalled Marty Mardirosian, drummer and co-founder of Chicago rock perennial, M&R Rush. “I was 7 years old and had just started playing drums. I remember wanting a drum set like Ringo, except blue. It took me five years to get it, but I finally did for my 8th grade graduation. My dad being a jazz drummer said he (Ringo) was holding the drum sticks wrong (doing a match grip) and told me to

keep holding them with a traditional grip. Now, 50 years later I still play using the traditional grip.” Scott Wielgos of the local band Got Issues was 9-years-old when he witnessed the Beatles TV debut. “I was immediately addicted,” he said, adding he still includes early Beatles hits in both his band and solo performances. “They had a fresh new musical sound with melody and harmonies that grabbed you. The audience reaction was entertaining as well.” “My sister was a sophomore in high school in 1964 and had a party at our house a little while before the Beatles were on the Sullivan Show,” recalled John Carpenter, guitarist of

The Nomad Planets band and owner of Hammond’s Thunderclap Recording Studio. “One of her friends brought ‘Meet The Beatles’ to our house and they played it over and over. I was 10 at the time and mesmerized. I stared at the high contrast black and white LP cover of their faces popping out of the black background while this exciting new music played. When the Beatles were on the Sullivan show a few weeks later I can remember vibrating with excitement and anticipation. It was the definitive beginning of how important music would become in my life.” “I was smitten. I thought they were fabulous,” recalled Chicago pop icon Mimi Betinis of Pezband fame. “My mother liked them but my father did not! It was a combination of things that made them succeed so quickly. The sound, the looks, the songs and the absolute visceral delivery they gave every time they recorded and preformed. Simply put, they were the originators. There was the Beatles and then there was everyone else.” Unlike Mardirosian, Wielgos,

Carpenter and Betinis, Chad Clifford was affected indirectly and secondhand by The Beatles. “I wasn’t born yet in 1964, but their appearance on Ed Sullivan had a profound impact on my father and mother,” said Clifford, who now owns the popular Front Porch Music retail store and school. “My dad went out the very next day and bought a drum set. His love of the Beatles and of rock ‘n’ roll was handed down to me at age 5. The Beatles were a breath of fresh air after the terrible winter of 1963 and the death of JFK. They were huge in Europe and they had nearly three albums of great material in the vaults to unleash on a hungry public. They were managed well and it was marketed brilliantly.” The Beatles fired the first shot of the British Invasion when they warbling through five songs on “The Ed Sullivan Show” — “All My Loving,” “Til There Was You,” “She Loves You,” “I Saw Her Standing There” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand” – and took a collective bow. Less than 48 hours later, the Beatles performed their first concert on U.S. soil in Washington, D.C. Sixties American pop singer Tommy Roe was witnessed the developing Beatles phenomenon firsthand and on February 11, 1964 opened for them in front of 8,000 screaming fans in our nation’s capital. “It was a pretty magical evening,” recalled Roe who performed only two songs that night, “Shelia’ and “Everybody.” The Beatles set opened with “Roll Over Beethoven” and ended eleven songs later with “Long Tall Sally,” clocking in at just over 30 minutes. Tickets cost $2. “My history with the guys began in 1963 when I was headlining my first tour of England with Chris Montez (of “Do You Wanna Dance” fame). The Beatles were a featured act on our tour,” said Roe. “That’s when I saw Beatlemania take hold. In 1963 nobody really knew who Beatles were outside of Liverpool (and Hamburg, Germany). Ringo had just joined the group a few months prior to our tour and their manager Brian Epstein who was a genius had started building the Beatles a fan base by the time Chris and I got over there to tour. Epstein had these groups of fans follow the tour from venue to venue and just go hysterical whenever the Beatles would play.

Tommy Roe — current live shot of Roe today.

We were the headliners, but it soon became impossible for us to follow them on stage because of all the chaos. So just a short time into the tour, the bill got flipped around and the Beatles closed the show. They went from opening act to headliner in a couple of weeks.” Like Roe, British teenager Laurence Juber who would one day share the stage with Paul McCartney as a guitarist in the band Wings, was hip to the Beatles early on. “We already had a slow build-up to Beatlemania in the U.K. and by early November 1963 they had become legit and my parents understood enough to buy me a guitar for my 11th birthday a week later,” recalled Juber with hindsight is not surprised how much impact the Beatles had on global culture. “Good timing, great marketing, killer songs, beautifully crafted image, a track record of hits and an audience that was demographically primed to explode. They were woven into the fabric of the zeitgeist, defining and then transcending the era.” Carl Giammarese, co-founder of The Buckinghams, a Chicago group whose very name reflected their desire to fit in with all the British Invasion bands on the charts in the mid-‘60s, remembers the time well. “I was one of the 70,000-plus people watching Ed Sullivan that night. I was very impressed by their melodic sound and original look,” he said. “Timing is everything and pop music was starting to stagnate.” The Beatles’ sound evolved quickly from pop to psychedelic.

“My favorite is still the early Mop Top-era,” said Giammarese, who was 16 in 1964. “It was so fresh and new. It was where I was at musically at the time, but I embrace all Beatle music, every album they released left all of us trying to catch up. They were always waaaay ahead of everyone.” John Carpenter agreed. “They were always evolving and never stagnant. They were always exploring musically, lyrically, culturally, emotionally, and taking us all along for the ride,” he said. “Their sound was so new and different at the time, but more importantly they were fun, loose and irreverent, which teenagers could relate to and claim as their own.” “They looked like they were having the time of their lives when they played the Sullivan show,” added Mardirosian on why kids across the country went out the next day and bought musical instruments. “They showed us those magical moments that come from playing music.” Email Tom Lounges at beatboss@aol.com

Symphony to deliver engaging ‘Tosca’ ‌ loise Marie Valadez / E Eloise.Valadez@nwi.com‌

usic and drama will blend in Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra’s latest production. The tunes from one of the most engaging of operas will come to life on stage when the symphony presents “Tosca in Concert” Feb. 14 at The Auditorium at Bethel Church in Crown Point. “The music is just astounding. It’s extremely romantic, passionate and dramatic,” said Kirk Muspratt, the orchestra’s music director and conductor. “Tosca” tells the story of singer Tosca, a painter, who is the object of her affection and a corrupt police chief who desires Tosca. Murder, passion, lust and greed are highly charged components of this classic tale. Muspratt said audiences love the “Tosca” score with its “gorgeous melodies” and sweeping sounds. “It’s gripping,” he said. “Tosca (as a character) is very complicated. She’s also a diva and is very fragile, jealous and not secure,” the conductor said. Starring as Tosca will be soprano Helen Todd with tenor Dominic Armstrong appearing as painter Cavaradossi and bass baritone Yohan Yi starring as police chief Scarpia. The Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus will also perform. Muspratt said the symphony’s production is technically a “concert opera” and not a full production of the opera itself. There will be select scenes from “Tosca” the opera showcased on large screens above the stage as well. In general, the production will have a minimal set and minimal costumes. “We’ll also have subtitles in English projected on the screen.” Muspratt will present a preconcert discussion as he does for other shows. For this discussion, the music director will go through the plot of “Tosca,” and also showcase key characters on screen to introduce who’s who. About singer Helen Todd, Muspratt said he’s worked with her three

times. “This is a big role and Helen has a powerful voice and is a talented actress,” he said. Muspratt encourages local music fans to see the show. “It’s not often we have the chance to hear “Tosca” and if we do, the only place to hear it is at The Lyric Opera in Chicago,” he said. Muspratt adds since the concert is

on Valentine’s Day, this would make an ideal present for a sweetheart. “It’s a very classy date,” he said. FYI: The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra will present “Tosca in Concert” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at The Auditorium at Bethel Church, on Broadway, south of U.S. 30, Crown Point. alerie Wotkun, director of Hammond Community Theatre’s production of “The Mousetrap,” came across Agatha Christie’s beloved murder mystery by unconventional means. “My daughter directed this when she was in high school, and I found the script in a pile of things of hers,” she said. “I found all of the scripts that she had through high school, and some of them were way too high school-ish to do. This one was more appealing to do because it was appealing to adults.” Opening Feb. 7 and running through

Feb. 16 at Hammond’s Beatniks on Conkey, “Mousetrap” finds a group of guests stuck in a manor during a snowstorm with a murderer in their midst. All of the guests, including a military major, an architect and the couple who own the grounds, are suspect in this beloved whodunit. Based on a short story penned by Christie in the mid 1940’s “Moustrap” has become a theatrical institution in the beloved mystery writer’s homeland. The play made its stage debut at London’s West End in1952 and continues to run in London today, with more than 25,000 performances more than six decades after first curtain. “Mousetrap also proved to be a

long-running hit with Canadian theatergoers; a Toronto production of the play ran for more than a quarter century. “We talked about (the play’s longevity) a lot in rehearsal, me and the cast, and we laugh and think ‘it’s a murder mystery. It’s been going for 60 years, hasn’t anybody figured it out?” Wotkun said. “I think the characters are interesting and Agatha Christie makes everyone look guilty, and it’s just a lot of fun.” Mike Lerner from Hobart plays boarding house proprietor Giles Ralston in Hammond Community Theatre’s production of “Mousetrap” and Betsy Archer from Munster portrays his wife, Mollie Ralston. They are joined onstage by Aaron Duncil from

Portage as detective Sargeant Trotter, Kali Rasla-Fitch as the elderly Mrs. Boyle and Dyer’s Rip Johnson as retired Army Major Metcalf. “The actors are all doing a really good job,” Wotkun said. “They’re all acting like they’re up to something. It’s really entertaining.” Next up for Hammond Community Theatre is a production of Neil Simon’s comic drama “Laughter on the 23rd Floor,” scheduled to open at Beatniks April 4. Monster Jam truck show ready for Allstate Arena excitement this weekend ‌Philip Potempa / philip.potempa@nwi.com

‌T

he world’s premier monster truck series, Monster Jam, is weighing in with more than 100,000 pounds of super-charged engine power for its annual hometown appearance this weekend at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. Billed as the most futuristic machine ever to hit the Monster Jam circuit, New Earth AuthoritySM, a.k.a. N.E.A. Police is one of the shiny new anticipated four-wheel stars of this weekend’s smash-ups in the spotlight. Unveiled just a few weeks prior to its arrival here, the chrome-plated New Earth Authority, driven by police officer Norm Miller already has a reputation “commanding order, seeking out and destroying those who stand in the way of peace.” “It’s all in in fun, but like any racing event, the competition is very real once you’re at the starting line,” said Miller, during an interview Monday. Produced by Aurora, Ill.-based Feld Motor Sports, Monster Jam events attract more than 4 million fans annually at the most prestigious arenas and stadiums throughout the world. Monster Jam trucks are customdesigned machines that average 12 feet tall by 12 feet wide, sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, Monster Jam trucks

New Earth AuthoritySM, a.k.a. N.E.A. Police is a new Monster Jam truck designed to look like a police riot helmet and in the spotlight this weekend unveiled to fans at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

Driver Norm Miller is a police officer who also enjoys driving Monster Trucks for the Monster Jam Show, including the newest vehicle called New Earth AuthoritySM, a.k.a. N.E.A. Police.

generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. They can fly up to 125 to 130 feet (a distance greater than 14 cars side by side) and up to 35 feet in the air. After 24 years working in the Monster Truck arena, Miller, whose “other career” is working as a police lieutenant in Warren, Ore., said he works 16 weekends a year doing Monster Jam truck events. “The question I get the most from fans is: ‘Are these trucks hard to drive?’” Miller said. “And the answer is they are just another form of racing vehicle, only much bigger.”

Miller said one of his favorite parts of any Monster Jam event is to participate in the “Pit Party,” which is the pre-show gathering meet and greet allowing fans of every age to get a close look at the machines and to talk with the drivers. Miller said among the field of 10 Monster Jam trucks competing at this year’s event will be a record-setting five World Champions, including the sport’s marquee machine, the best known monster truck of all time: Grave Digger, driven this time by versatile veteran Carl Van Horn. This weekend’s event, which kicks off with shows Friday and runs until Sunday, also stars the Monster Jam truck that many have called “the fastest machine in the sport,” six-time World Racing Champion Max-DSM, driven by Neil Elliot. In a nod to her “other” celebrity appeal, the woman tagged as “The Queen of Carnage,” former WCW and WWF star Madusa, also returns to Rosemont after a multi-year absence in the only truck in the history of Monster Jam to be named after its driver. Madusa, also known as “the First Lady of Monster Jam,” was the first woman to win a Monster Jam World Finals, claiming the World Freestyle

title in 2004 and, in a rarely duplicated feat, the World Racing championship the very next year. The two remaining World Champions on the roster are the wildly popular “crazy bull,” El Toro Loco with driver Chuck Werner of Paxton, Ill., and 2011 World Freestyle champion Avenger, driven by “Mr. Excitement” Jim Koehler. Also making their Chicago-area debut are the Stark Industries-inspired Iron Man, driven by Lee O’Donnell and cult favorite Metal Mulisha, driven by former off-road star and rising Monster Jam driver Todd LeDuc. Rounding out the line-up are Monster Jam’s 2013 “Fans Choice,” the unmistakable and hauntingly hard-core Zombie, driven by Sean Duhon, and the aptly named Wrecking Crew, driven by Steve Koehler. ‘Have you ever’? situations ‌John G. Brokopp‌/ JBROKOPP@COMCAST.NET

ave you ever thought of blackjack in terms of football? It can indeed be both an offensive and a defensive game. You’re on offense when you double down on 11 against a dealer’s 6. For the player, it’s first and goal in an attempt to capitalize on a favorable situation. You go on defense when you split eights against a dealer’s 10. A pair of eights gives you 16, a very treacherous hand. Splitting those eights means you’re gambling to turn one bad hand into two good ones in hopes of sacking the dealer at a price of doubling your bet. You also risk playing two bad hands instead of just one. Have you ever noticed that periodic two-second delay when the slot machine you are playing won’t allow you to initiate a wager? I’ve heard players say the machine is somehow recycling into a winning mode, or perhaps a losing one. Maybe it’s a tip that a jackpot is on the way. It’s all a myth about gambling devices that are fertile ground for misinformation. The delay isn’t a signal at all. It takes place when the machine’s internal electronic meters are being updated. The meters have no connection with the random number generator and therefore have no significance for the player or anything at all to do with winning or losing. Have you ever watched with anticipation as the reels on your slot machine stop one by one until a decision is reached? One jackpot symbol falls, two jackpot symbols fall, then a single bar. You see the third symbol that will generate a jackpot hanging enticingly above the pay line. Is the machine teasing you? Not really. The reels on traditional spinning reel and video slots do not spin independently of one another. The outcome of the symbols on the pay line or the grid of symbols on a video slot is predetermined the instant you initiate a play. The drama of watching the reels is an

illusion that is created to simulate a gameplaying experience. Have you ever walked away from a slot machine and see the next person who sits down hit a jackpot? The money should have been yours, you think. Well, as the old song goes, it ain’t necessarily so. Even when a slot machine isn’t being played, it is still processing combinations of symbols until one is revealed when somebody makes a bet. Everyone’s chances of hitting the jackpot are always the same during any given window of playing time. In the time it took you to get up and somebody else to sit down, thousands of combinations were presented but not revealed. Jackpots are always possible but they are never waiting to happen.

Earn additional entries playing slots and table games. HORSESHOE: Every slot player enjoys receiving free slot play offers in the mail every month. Imagine being the recipient of a $1 million offer? Karen S. from Oaklawn, IL doesn’t have to imagine. For her it was a reality after she won the $1 Million Bankroll promotion on Jan. 26. The first thing she did was call her mother and her husband, with whom she gambles at the Shoe several times a week. Ironically, her husband wasn’t with her the night she won because the cold weather and snow convinced him to stay home. Karen joked that it was her good luck charm. Her seven-figure bonanza will be paid off in $90,000 increments beginning this month. She received $10,000 in free play the night she won.
