he members of the country music group Hazzard County have circled the wagons and are coming to the aid of a longtime fan and friend – Dan Berrisford — by putting together a multi-band event at the Fraternal Order of Eagles (13140 Lakeshore Drive) in Cedar Lake. The doors open at 4pm with Hazzard County scheduled to kick off the live entertainment at 5pm, followed by full sets from two other area country bands, Falls Creek and Bridgewater.

Lifelong region native Dan Berrisford has suffered five heart attacks and three open heart surgeries coupled with long hospital stays and multiple tests all with no insurance, so the bands have rallied together to produce this event to raise funds to help Berrisford and his wife Ellen battle the mountain of medical bills and day to day living expenses Along with the bands, a pork chop dinner is planned from 4-7:30pm, along with raffles and a silent auction. A donation of $10 is requested and the event is open to all ages. More

I first met Charlie when he was booking shows at Poplar Creek Music Theatre and was thrilled when Dean and Bruce White wooed him away from New York’s Nederlander Organization and officially gave him the reins at Star Plaza in March of 1989. Blum’s vision has guided it since; expanding the range of talents from standard Vegas fare to top Country, R&B, Jazz and Rock artists; while also inserting his personal passion for live theatre productions. It has been my great pleasure to know and work with Charlie Blum for all of his 25 years as the premier talent wrangler of Northwest Indiana and I look forward to the next 25 to come. •  ‌Chicago combo Dean III & The Wagers have released their full length original CD “Dirty Souls” helmed by veteran producer Sean O’Keefe (Plain White T’s, Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights). ate Ryan, director of Crown Point Community Theatre’s “Time Stands Still,” saw an immediate connection with the four actors and their respective characters in her production of the acclaimed drama. “From the moment they auditioned, they felt the story in their bones,” she said. “And because these actors like good writing, they took to the play immediately. The cast is just great.” Opening March 28 and running through April 12 and kicking off Crown Point Community Theatre’s 10th season, “Time” tells the tale of Sarah Goodwin, an American photojournalist who, along with her longtime boyfriend and fellow war journalist, James, adjusts to life at home in the Big Apple after nearly being killed covering the Iraqi War. “Time” was penned by American playwright Donald Marguiles, who received a Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for his “Dinner with Friends” and also won raves for works such as “Sight Unseen” and “Brooklyn Boy.” “Time” made its debut in Los Angeles in 2009 and made its way to Broadway a year later, with Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Laura Linney portraying Goodwin. Crown Point’s production of “Time” marks the play’s regional debut.

“It’s beautifully crafted and should be done,” Ryan said. “(Sarah and James) are both pretty banged up on a lot of levels when they first get back (stateside). They’re, of course, very relieved to be home, but then the other battle begins. How do we cope with trying to move forward and make decisions as a couple … now they have to face and examine the day to day traumas of trying to connect with each other and commit to each other.” KeriAnne Valuckis from Hobart stars as Goodwin in Crown Point’s staging of “Time” and is joined onstage by Griffith’s Hal Kilgore as James, Marc Ryser from Crown Point as her editor, Richard and Rachel Livingston from Chesterton as Richard’s girlfriend, Mandy. “It’s a deceptively modest series of conversations among just four characters, and I have four extremely talented actors who contribute (to the play) in very different ways,” Ryan said. Due to adult language and themes, “Time” is recommended for mature audiences. Next up for Crown Point Community Theatre is a production of the comedy “Sordid Lives,” scheduled to open May 16. Rainbow effect Performance couple ready for lead roles in new ‘Joseph’ Broadway tour I M A G E C O U R T E S Y O F F O X “ A M E R I C A N I D O L”

Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young, both finalists from different seasons on Fox Network’s “American Idol,” met while appearing on Broadway and married in June 2013. The couple are now the starring leads in the new national tour Broadway tour of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

‌I

t’s only the second week for the new national Broadway tour of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” and stars Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo have already made it a friendly habit to give credit to one of their stage predecessors from under the most flowing and flashy items of any musical’s wardrobes. “We have the blessing of Donny Osmond,” said Young, chatting from telephone last week from the tour’s first city stop in Cleveland. “We know just how special the role of Joseph is for so many.” Young, whose flash of a smile is familiar from Season 5 of “American Idol” in 2006 when he was a favorite finalist, stars in the title role made so famous by Osmond for a long, year-after-year extended run in Chicago spanning more than 2,000 performances, including his time in New York on Broadway, before he left the role in 1997. Broadway In Chicago and the Independent Presenters Network launched this month’s 2014 national tour of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blankenbuehler, with the new tour playing the Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W Randolph, now for a two-week run that concludes March 30. “It’s not only just the songs audiences love so much about ‘Joseph,’ it’s also the story,” said DeGarmo, who joined Young for the same telephone interview, and stars as the Narrator for the stage story based on the biblical tale of kinship, rivalry, greed, lust, love and hope. The duo of Young and DeGarmo and

their matching smiles and entertaining stage enthusiasm are a natural fit for the leading roles of the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. DeGarmo, who was a finalist on Season 3 of “American Idol” in 2004 and also starred on the popular CBS daytime soap opera “Young and the Restless,” shares another common bond with Young. After announcing their engagement in 2012, DeGarmo and Young married last June. The couple met after sharing the same Broadway stage in the 2009 revival of “Hair.” “Even though I still wear Joseph’s loincloth in scenes, it’s still more clothes than the big final scene from the first act of ‘Hair,’ “ Young said. For this new production of “Joseph,” they are joined by Paul Castree as Simeon, William Thomas Evans as Jacob/Potiphar, Brian Golub as Reuben, Will Mann as Judah and Ryan Williams as the

“Elvis-inspired” Pharaoh. The ensemble includes Chip Abbott, Amanda Braun, Jonathan Burke, Claire Camp, Richard Cerato, Vincent D’Elia, Lisa Finegold, Lili Froehlich, Sasha Hollinger, Brandon Hudson, Patrick John Moran, Mark Roland, David Rossetti, Leigh Scheffler, Christine Cornish Smith, Brett Stoelker, Tricia Tanguy, Matthew Tiberi and Katie Whetsell. “The Narrator for this show is the very role I once looked up to years ago as a child in the choir for a production,” DeGarmo said. One of the most enduring shows of all time, “Joseph” is the family musical about the trials and triumphs of Joseph, Israel’s favorite son. The first collaboration of composer Webber, whose creative talent has given audiences “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Phantom of the Opera” and “Cats,” and lyricist Tim Rice, blends pop, country and rock into an uplifting,

technicolor story of biblical themes and lessons for all ages. Retelling the story of Joseph, his 11 jealous brothers and the now legendary coat of many colors, the magical musical is filled with unforgettable songs including “Those Canaan Days,” “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.” This tour features scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, costume design by Jennifer Caprio, lighting design by Howell Binkley, sound design by John Shivers and David Patridge, projection and video design by Daniel Brodie, music supervision by David Kreppel and music direction by Wayne Green. Both Young and DeGarmo are especially impressed with the costume design and detail for Joseph’s famed flowing robes as recreated for this tour by Caprio. “The technicolor coat was custom created for me so it has to fit perfectly for every performance,” Young said. “It’s not only modeled from the original Broadway designs, but it also features all 29-intended colors to blend to create the stained-glass window effect. When I’m on stage wearing it, there’s no trouble seeing me.” WHAT: “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” starring Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo • WHERE: Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Director: Neil Burger This story takes place in the city of Chicago in the near future. The city is divided into 5 factions: Abnegation, meant for the selfless; Amity, meant for the peaceful; Candor, meant for the honest; Dauntless, meant for the brave; and Erudite, meant for the knowledgeable. MUPPETS MOST WANTED

‌VERONICA MARS

THE SINGLE MOMS CLUB

Director: James Bobin

Director: Rob Thomas

Director: Tyler Perry

Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais.

On the eve of graduating law school, Veronica Mars has put Neptune and her amateur sleuthing days behind her. While interviewing at high-end New York law firms, Veronica Mars gets a call from her ex-boyfriend Logan who has been accused of murder. Veronica heads back to Neptune just to help Logan find an attorney, but when things don’t seem right with how Logan’s case is perceived and handled, Veronica finds herself being pulled back into a life she thought she had left behind.

Brought together by an incident at their children’s school, a group of single mothers from different walks of life bond, and create a support group that helps them find comedy in the obstacles of life, inner strength to overcome their personal challenges and inspiration and laughter in their new sisterhood.

Majestic Star deals a winning hand

‌JOHN G. BROKOPP / JBROKOPP@COMCAST.NET‌

ajestic Star Casinos in Gary have always been very proactive in bringing big money poker tournament action for everyday players to the Chicago area. The property’s most recent venture was partnering with the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) earlier this month for an event that attracted 301 poker enthusiasts from around the Midwest. When the dust of battle settled at the final table of the Main Event, the winner was Kenneth Baime from Glenview, Illinois. He took home a $77,681 first prize, reason enough for him to make plans for MSPT’s next stop at Majestic Star August 16 – 24. The runner-up in the tournament was Leon Morford of Rockford, Illinois. His second place prize money amounted to $42,504. This marks the fifth season for MSPT, which was founded by Bryan Mileski, the Minnesota Poker Player Alliance State Director and president and publisher of Minnesota Poker Magazine. Each stop on the tour is a deep stack Texas Hold’em tournament. The lure of course is affordable buy-ins and blinds, something which allows players with a passion for poker to experience the thrill of big money excitement without having to put up big money. The victorious Baime utilized skillful play to secure his victory. He stayed out of the biggest pots for the majority of Day 2 of the tournament. It was not until he was one of seven players remaining at the Final Table that his relentless drive for first place began. He became the chip leader with jacks against Brian Zimcosky, a young man with a reputation for being the most aggressive player at the Final Table. The death knell sounded for Zimcosky when Baime induced from him an all-in check-raise with a board showing a 5 and Jack of spades, 7 of diamonds, and 4 of hearts. Baime held a 4 and 5 of clubs for two pair, while his opponent held a king and 10 of

Interior of Gayety’s Chocolates and Ice Cream in Lansing

ce cream and chocolate fans will always satisfy a sweet tooth at Gayety’s Chocolates and Ice Cream. The sweets shop, which originally debuted in 1920 in the South Chicago neighborhood of The Windy City, has locations in Lansing, Ill. and Schererville, Ind. (The Schererville location recently reopened on U.S. 41). Those who have a taste for quality ice cream, an old-fashioned malt or shake, hand-dipped chocolates and other sweets, will be in their glory perusing the

offerings at Gayety’s. Blend all of that goodness with a pleasant, retro atmosphere and you have a winning dessert experience. Established by James Papageorge in 1920 on South Chicago’s bustling Commercial Avenue, Gayety’s was carried through the decades by his nephew Lee Flessor and now continues with Flessor’s son Jim and wife Beth as co-owners of the iconic sweets shop. This writer’s family members have long been fans of Gayety’s and have frequented the business since the South Chicago days when PapaGeorge would man the cash register at the entrance of the shop.

A trip to Gayety’s, whether it was just blocks away from home or miles away, was always something to look forward to. During a recent visit to the Lansing location for a late afternoon treat, my co-worker and I enjoyed a couple of favorite sundaes. The atmosphere in the shop is definitely welcoming with its pastel colors, sweet aroma and cases of chocolates, various candy and cupcakes on display. Pictures dating to the South Chicago days and a massive photo of Papageorge situated on the wall near the entrance are nice touches to the decor and bring back memories for those who’ve been longtime fans. If you’re looking for a sweet break, Gayety’s is a perfect spot for gathering with family and friends or for just a little relaxing time alone to conjure up memories and dig into a bowl of confectionery delight.
