‘PET ROCK’ Lives Up To Its Name with Music Celebrity Support

s “father” to some amazing rescue animals over the years, I have come to be passionate about the important work being done by my fellow animal lovers at local shelters and rescue groups. I spend a lot of personal time volunteering and campaigning on behalf of the region’s homeless and abused animals. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am donating some celebrity items from my personal memorabilia collection for the event’s silent auction and will be volunteering as stage emcee for this Saturday’s “Pet Rock” event. The rustic big barn at County Line Orchard (200 S. County Line Road) in Hobart is the site for “Pet Rock,” the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana’s family-friendly fundraiser featuring live performances by three regional music groups of various styles and a bounty of celebrity-signed items up for auction. The Fabtones kick off the event at 6 p.m. with a high energy set of nostalgic hits from the golden era of rock originally made famous by the likes of Chuck Berry, Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and other early pop sensations. Grammy Award-winner Jim Peterik, a founding member of both 1960s hit makers The Ides of March (“Vehicle,” “LA Goodbye”) and

1980s MTV-stars Survivor (“Eye of the Tiger,” “Burning Heart,” “The Search is Over”), will perform a centerpiece concert set billed as Jim & friends, featuring several of the radio hits he wrote and recorded for those bands along with famous tunes he has written for other artists like .38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Sammy Hagar. Although Peterik’s last few concerts in Northwest Indiana have been unplugged “Storyteller Shows” as he calls them, this Saturday’s performance will be a full electric throw down. “There’s always stories, but for this show we’ll be plugged in and rocking out,” said Peterik, who also donated an electric guitar for the event’s silent auction autographed by himself and more than a dozen of his rock star pals. Classic rock veterans Ripley Street close out “Pet Rock” with a set of classic rock covers (Beatles, Bill Withers, Grand Funk, Aretha Franklin, etc.) and select originals from their own two albums (“Ripley Street” and “Traffic Jam”). “It takes a lot of money to operate our shelter and care for as many animals as we do on a day to day basis,” said Betty Clayton, Director of The Humane Society of Northwest Indiana. “We are able to continue doing what we do because of private donations and fundraisers like ‘Pet

Golden era of TV revisited with ‘Laughter’

‌W

‌TIM SHELLBERG / TIMES CORRESPONDENT‌

ayne Puchkors, director of Hammond Community Theatre’s production of “Laughter on the 23rd Floor,” is admittedly not a fan of plays with gratuitous foul language. But he warmed up to the occasionally mature dialogue in his production of the Neil Simon comedy/drama rather easily. “Most of the time, you could cut out the adult language out of a play and it would be fine,” he said. “But for this one, Neil Simon used the language as a running joke, and you can’t cut it out, and it’s just really funny.” Opening April 4 and running through April 13 at Hammond’s Beatniks on Conkey, “Laughter” chronicles the experiences of green comedy writer Lucas Brickman and his small screen variety show in New York in the early 1950s. Simon drew from his experiences as a junior staffer on Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows,” which also included the legendary Mel Brooks and Larry Gelbart amongst his peers, for the play. “Laughter” made its Broadway debut in 1993, featuring Nathan Lane, J.K. Simmons and Bitty Schram in its cast, and logged in 320 performances. Gene Wilder led the cast of a production at London’s West End three years later. “What was great about (‘Show’) was that it was live,” Puchkors said.

“You didn’t have cue cards and the actors had to know what they were doing and if something got goofed up, everybody had to cover for everybody else. It was an amazingly funny show. It was comic genius.” “Some of the stuff that goes down in (‘Laughter’) is just really funny,” he added. “There’s some comedy bits in it that I’m sure the audience is really going to enjoy and have a good laugh at.” Puchkors’ cast is made up of nine area thespians, led by Patrick Pohrte as Brickman and John Sanchez as Max Prince, the volatile leader and star of the show. “We’ve got a really good cast on this one,” Puchkors said. “You just love to give them an idea, turn them loose, and get out of the way so you don’t mess it up as a director … we’ve been doing this for a while, and I know what’s coming up (in the play), and I’m still laughing, and I think that that’s pretty good.” Due to the adult nature of the material, “Laughter” is intended for mature audiences. Next up for Hammond Community Theatre is a production of the comedy “My Husband’s Wild Desires,” scheduled to open at Beatniks Aug. 15. omedian Rob Schneider is happy to be spending his weekends with some funny familiar faces from his days as a favorite cast member on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” “This touring idea as an ‘SNL’ trio sharing the same stage is fairly new, just started last year,” said Schneider, talking by telephone during a taping break last Friday from the set of his new television series “Real Rob.” “It’s three guys on stage sharing a mix of comedy and old

“Saturday Night Live” Comedian Jon Lovitz has reunited with fellow cast members from the NBC sketch comedy show for a new national tour called “The Veterans of Saturday Night Live.”

war stories from the same show that put us where we are today: still working.” Billed as “The Veterans of Saturday Night Live,” Schneider joins Tim Meadows and Jon Lovitz for a trek to the Hoosier state this weekend for one exclusive show at the Stardust Event Center at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa in Michigan City. “When we go out on tour, we like to mix it up for audiences,” Schneider said. “Sometimes I’m doing this show with Kevin Nealon and Chris Kattan. This time, I’m paired up with Meadows and Lovitz. Just seeing Lovitz make a face makes me bust into laughter. These are all great funny guys who’ve shared some very funny moments with TV audiences.” When Schneider was hired at “Saturday Night Live” in 1988, it was after he was booked as an opening comic for fellow “SNL” pal Dennis Miller, which earned him a spot for a quick appearance for an HBO comedy special. Originally hired as a writer for “SNL,” he soon earned billing as a featured player which eventually became a full cast member during his “SNL” stay from 1990 to 1994. Prized for his celebrity

impersonations, one of Schneider’s recurring skits was playing “Tiny Elvis,” a pocket-sized Presley with extra attitude and plenty of anger when called “cute” or faced with his diminutive size by his “TCB” (Taking Care of Business) entourage. But most fans still associate Schneider as Richard Laymer aka “Rich the Office Photo Copier Guy,” a popular character and simple, silly sketch series he dreamed-up one day after being inspired by his own confined office space at 30 Rockefeller Center, where “Saturday Night” is taped. “When I was a writer at ‘SNL,’ I had to share a tiny office and my side was right next to the wall where the heat came from and usually it was boiling hot,” Schneider said. “I’d do anything to have a reason to get out of there and near the photocopier area, there was a work space area where I would end up working. And as the people kept walking past time and time again during the course of the day, that’s when it occurred to me how awkward it is to have to keep coming up with something new and fresh to say when forced to address the same people multiple times

in an attempt to be socially polite. That’s when I thought it would be funny to just slightly keep changing people’s names with inspired nickname variations as a way to be friendly.” As featured in the now infamous sketch moments, Schneider as “Rich,” a character working in the accounting department but situated so his desk was hopelessly next to the office photocopier, sported an ear-to-ear sly grin while addressing the co-workers who crossed his path with a litany of hip name creations. Sandy, for example became Sandstra and The Sandster. (In a sketch themed about his company’s at-office holiday party, Rich becomes alarmed for his Xeroxing best friend after tipsy co-workers get silly and decide to make photocopies of their rear-ends by sitting on glass of his plugged-in office equipment pal. His co-workers make it up to him by giving him a bow-wrapped extra copy of the photocopier operations manual.) During his four seasons at “SNL,” Schneider was nominated for three Emmys and a Peabody Award. Among his many film credits, are writing and starring roles in “Deuce Bigalow,”

“Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo,” “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,” “The Hot Chick,” “The Animal,” “Shark Bait,” “The Waterboy” and “Big Daddy.” His collaboration with Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company resulted in starring roles in “50 First Dates,” “The Longest Yard” and “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.” Meadows also established himself as a versatile performer on “SNL” in the early ‘90s, with recurring characters like The Ladies Man and a variety of impersonations, including Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. Lovitz, who was on “SNL” from 1985 to 1990, brought to life an array of memorable sketch characters like “Tommy Flanagan, The Pathological Liar” who used the old catchphrase, “Yeah! That’s the ticket!” as he, after visible effort, finally finished constructing his latest lie. He also morphed into the identities of skit favorites like “Master Thespian,” “Tonto the Indian” and “Hanukkah Harry.” Schneider said like all of the “SNL” cast members, he worked hard to prove his comic versatility to the show’s producer Lorne Michaels.

“When Charlton Heston was the guest host one week, I did an impersonation of Edward G. Robinson for a sketch and I think I surprised a lot of people that I could pull it off,” Schneider said. “And sometimes, I think I was too good. I remember one time I had a good shot at being cast in one of Woody Allen’s projects. It seemed like

a done-deal. Then, I appeared in an ‘SNL’ skit as his daughter Soon-Yi and I never heard from him again.” Schneider, who turned 50 last year, has been busy producing, financing and starring in his new television series, which he says has already been sold for distribution deals and is airing in markets around the world. After his most recent network

series “Rob,” based on his own life of ups and downs and premiering on CBS in January 2012 as a midseason replacement for “Rules of Engagement,” ended in May 2012, he decided to re-imagine the series and continue it backed by his own finances. He scrapped the cast of actors and actresses hired to play his family and friends, including Claudia Bassols as his wife and Cheech Marin as his father, and decided to use his real wife, Mexican writer-producer Patricia Azarcoya Schneider and his friend, comedian Jamie Lissow. “It’s even funnier and a better fit for me, because everything is real,” Schneider said. “You don’t get that in Hollywood very often.” WHAT: “The Veterans of ‘Saturday Night Live’ “ Starring Rob Schneider, Tim Meadows and Jon Lovitz • WHERE: Stardust Event Center, Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa, 777 Blue Chip Dr., Michigan City, Ind. • WHEN: 8 p.m. Saturday, March 29 • HOW MUCH: $65, $49 and $35 • FYI: Ticketmaster. com or in person at The Gift Box in the Blue Chip Casino pavilion or bluechipcasino.com or call (219) 879-7711 . • NOTE: Guests must be 21 or older, with a valid state or government issued photo ID.

Majestic Star’s poker champ deals some tips

T

JOHN G. BROKOPP / JBROKOPP@COMCAST.NET

aking your poker game to the next level can be a challenge if your only experience is playing with friends or family. Your first step should be a visit to a casino poker room where you can always find a game with an affordable buy-in. Regional tours, such as the Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) and the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT), are the logical next step. Both organizations give average players the opportunity to experience tournament action. That’s precisely what Kenneth Baime did. The Glenview, Illinois native took home first place and a $77,681 paycheck when he won the Mid-States Poker Tour event at Majestic Star Casino in Gary, Indiana earlier this month. What words of wisdom does Baime have to offer fellow poker players who wish to take their game to the next level? “When I won the MSPT, until just before the final table I probably had a below average stack for about 90 percent of the tournament, and started day two in roughly 55th place out of 86 or so people remaining,” Baime said. “But, I waited, picked my spots, and just

tried to stay in the hunt and was fortunate enough to remain competitive until I finally could accumulate more chips. A few years ago, I probably would have forced the issue early, and likely would have been knocked out because I would have been playing subpar hands.” Therein rests the foundation of Baime’s philosophy. Comparing chip stacks too early in the tournament often leads to rash decisions on the part of the less-experienced player. “If there are some players in the early or middle stages of a tournament with a lot more chips than you, don’t panic,” he cautions. “Obviously, you are in a better position to win if you have a lot of chips. But, sometimes it’s not in the cards, and you can’t get a big stack early. As long as you have a credible amount of chips, just relax and play your best game. “As an oversimplification, I ask myself, ‘If I go all in, and a big stack was to call and lose this hand to me, will it hurt him?’ If I can answer in the affirmative, and my chip stack is pretty good relative to the blinds, I try not to force the issue and overplay mediocre hands, because I still probably have enough chips to last awhile.” Baime also reminds players to be very

conscious of how their playing style is perceived by the other players at the table. In other words, know your image. “If you have raised the last five hands, even though you may know you had premium hands every time, if the hands have not gone to showdown and you haven’t had to show your cards, other players are probably perceiving you as being quite loose and/or aggressive,” Baime observed. “By the same token, if you have folded for the last hour because you kept getting lousy hands, you are probably being perceived as overly tight. Keep that perceived image in mind as you decide how to play a hand. “If you are being perceived as tight, you may get away with a bluff that a loose player might have been called down on. “If you are being perceived as loose, and hit a big hand, maybe you can bet a larger amount and still get paid, or maybe you need to fold a pretty good hand you otherwise might have played. Know your image and act accordingly.” “And, finally, just get out and play. There are lots of low buy in tournaments. Play a few and experiment and see what works, and what doesn’t work, for you. A little experience goes a long way.”

‌NOAH

2 hr 0 min | PG-13 | Released March 28

Director: Darren Aronofsky From the inspirational story of courage, sacrifice, hope and redemption, Darren Aronofsky brings to the screen “Noah.” Academy Award winner Russell Crowe portrays the man chosen by God to undertake a momentous mission of rescue before an apocalyptic flood destroys the world. Noah suffers visions of an apocalyptic deluge and takes measures to protect his family from the coming flood. Never before has the full story been brought to life on screen in a vivid epic – inviting the audience to experience these spectacular events through the eyes and emotions of Noah and his family, as they journey through fear and faith, destruction and triumph, hardship and hope. The production took the film’s world-class cast and crew on their own unexpected journey as they set out to intensively research Noah’s world, honor the text and board an authentic Ark, hand-built to biblically-detailed specifications. In every aspect of the film’s performances, action and innovative specialeffects, the creative team’s aim was clear: to forge a contemporary experience of “Noah” that is immediate, vibrant and personal.

His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual’s ability to change the world.
