he third annual “Mike Ratley Memorial Rock & Roll Benefit Concert” named for longtime Highland resident and regional musician Mike Ratley happens at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1400 South Broad Street, Griffith, Ind. on Saturday (March 8) from 6 p.m. to midnight. All ages are welcome. Mike Ratley played drums in a variety of Northwest Indiana club bands over the years. due to diabetes. Friends remember him as a devoted family man, an accomplished musician and avid fisherman. “His death made us all realize how fleeting life can be and how much our friends enrich our lives on a daily basis,” explained his wife Rita Ratley in a written statement. “In an effort to keep Mike’s spirit alive, we decided to sponsor a fund raiser in his honor to raise money for diabetes related charities that has now become an annual event. As music was a lifelong passion of Mike’s, we knew the event would feature music provided by friends and
acquaintances, giving us all a positive occasion to remember our fallen colleague and not wait until the ‘next funeral’ to meet again.” A $10 per person door donation gains access to a full evening of live musical performances by Chad Clifford (of The Crawpuppies), The Guilty Party, and The Hotts. Mike’s 18-year-old son, Luke Ratley who learned to play drums from his father will also Mike Ratley perform with his modern rock band The Day Nine. “I’m right handed, but dad was left handed and that’s the way I learned to play drums. He also taught me to play ‘behind the beat’,” said Luke who proudly plays his father’s first drum kit. “It’s the one my grandparents bought him when he was about my age back in the 1970s.” “Last year, we raised money for the Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana ‘Camp Until a Cure’ program,” explained Rita Ratley. “This year we will be donating the proceeds to HealthLinc of Lake and Porter Counties, an organization that provides a wide array of compassionate and quality healthcare and assistance for those in need. They also provide medication to individuals with diabetes. Our goal is to raise funds for testing strips which are not normally provided but are a necessity for diabetic patients.” Along with the variety of entertainment, many raffles and food provided by “Valpo Vienna,” a cash bar will be provided by the Knights of Columbus. March Madness Mania From brackets to gamewatching gatherings, annual sports excitement builds Stephen Lesniewski / Times Correspondent
E
very March, millions flock to their television sets to watch the best that college basketball has to offer. Sixty-eight teams playing 67 games in a span of 21 days – with one team taking home the crown. Let the madness begin. “I love the fans and the excitement of the games,” said Keith Campbell of Chicago. “It’s just fun, and the atmosphere is exciting.” Cinderella-outcomes and stunning upsets are par for the course, and that doesn’t even include the conference tournaments leading up to “the Big Dance.” While the Super Bowl attracts the most television viewers in a single event, the NCAA tournament, as a whole, captures more viewers, per Forbes, as alumni, and new found fans, of the 68 teams watch the tournament unfold. Among the memorable stories from past tournaments, Campbell said one of his favorites was from last year after Louisville won the title and helped Kevin Ware, who broke his leg earlier in the tournament, cut down the net. “It was touching,” he said. “And even though they were the top seed, it felt like a Cinderella story with the team winning and helping him cut down the net.”

To prepare for the best possible bracket picks during March Madness, fans scour stats for various college basketball teams, spanning favorites to possible “Cinderella stories” on the court.
• WHERE TO WATCH While living rooms are a common preference for some viewers, the tournament games are easily accessible to fans away from home – as all the games are being streamed online and countless sports bars
will have the games on. Among them is the designated one of the “official hangouts of March Madness,” according to national promotional campaigns targeted to this favorite time of college basketball season, is the
Buffalo Wild Wings chain. “Our 50 TVs usually get people in,” said Darci Lopez, manager of Buffalo Wild Wings in Calumet City. “We have the most amount of TVs [among sports bars] in the area, and we put the games on people want to watch. Plus, our wings also keep bringing them back.” Lopez also said her store is reaching out to alumni groups of local teams playing in the tournament for viewing parties of games those teams are playing.
BRACKETS While fans flock to TV screens, a common pastime is the filling out of the tournament brackets. Millions of brackets are filled out each year in office pools, among friends and online, and this year will likely surpass those numbers with the added incentive of Warren Buffet’s $1 billion perfect bracket challenge, which could award the maker of a bracket to correctly guess every match-up through the National Championship a $1 billion prize. “Setting up the bracket is fun but difficult,” said Matthew Rosado of East Chicago. “You don’t know what is going to happen with upsets, and you never know what to expect with small schools, like Butler with back-to-back National Championship appearances. No one ever would have guessed that.” The odds of filling out the perfect bracket are improbable – near impossible – and every year has its handful of so called “bracket busters.” One such bracket buster was 15-seed Florida Gulf Coast, with its first NCAA tournament appearance ever, not only beating 2-seed Georgetown, but making the Sweet 16. “March Madness can go any kind of way,” Campbell said. “It really is unpredictable.” • No 16-seed has ever beat a 1-seed, although a few games have been close • Typically, at least one 12-seed beats a 5-seed every year • All four No. 1 seeds have made the Final Four only once • A Final Four without at least one No.1 seed

ausha Campbell, who hails from Lehi, Utah, just finished earning her college degree from Utah Valley University studying dance, with a resume that includes doing competitive cheerleading for four years. But lately, it’s the world of Walt Disney, both new and old, that Campbell has included as part of her latest homework. She is cast as Sofia the First, Disney’s first “little girl princess” and the star of kids’ favorite cable channel Disney Junior. A new touring live stage show produced by Feld Entertainment called “Disney Junior Live on Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure,” puts the spotlight on the newest character in the Disney Family, Sofia, along with other new and old characters starring in the shows on Disney Junior. “This is my first tour and it’s a new live tour, so we are all learning and having a great time meeting young fans and parents at each show,” said Campbell, during a telephone interview last week while playing cities in Florida. Due to tremendous public response, “Disney Junior Live on Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure” has already extended this month’s Rosemont Theatre Chicagoland engagement. A new performance has been added at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 17, for a total of eight performances, for the run March 14 to 17. In addition to Sofia and

her friends, other new popular characters from the top performing cable TV series for preschoolers from Disney Junior include story spotlights featuring characters from the smash hit “Jake and the Never Land Pirates.” There’s also a special interactive “pre-show” for the audience starring the loveable 6-year-old doctor to toys and stuffed animals, Doc McStuffins. Children and their parents will sing “The Check-Up Song” along with Doc as she provides tender love and care. This new 2-hour stage show launched for this 90-city national tour in July 2013. “The Feld Entertainment mission of providing quality live entertainment experiences that the entire family enjoys starts with Disney Live! because it is often a young fan’s first theatrical experience,” said producer Alana Feld. “Children everywhere are falling in love with Sofia and Jake, and we are thrilled to bring these popular Disney Junior characters to the stage for the first time ever.” In this original storyline, Mickey and Minnie lead the audience on an exciting adventure that has families rooting for their favorite pirate Jake and Sofia. Audiences then embark on a journey to the magical world of Enchancia, where Sofia, her stepsiblings Amber and James, and the entire kingdom are preparing for the annual friendship festival. to her royal subjects at the celebration, and the one-and-only Cinderella visits the castle to help Sofia in her mission to find just the right present. The second half of the live stage show continues when families cast away to Never Land where Jake and his Yo Ho pirate friends Izzy and Cubby are in a race against time to locate a mysterious treasure-filled volcano. Danger, thrills and adventure lurk around every turn when our swashbuckling friends battle Captain Hook for the ultimate prize. Peter Pan makes a special appearance, aiding the team in their heroic quest, and with the help of Tinker Bell’s pixie dust, Jake and his crew fly above the stage in their journey.
Campbell said it took some time to learn about how to navigate the beautiful and very full signature purple ball gown that Sofia wears. “The dress is very authentic and very heavy,” Campbell said. “When I meet all of the fans in the audience, they always ask about my dress.” WHAT: “Disney Junior Live On Tour! 300: Rise of an Empire 1 hr 43 min | R | Released March 7
Director: Noam Murro Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel, Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster 300, this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. 300: Rise of an Empire pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Artemesia (Eva Green), vengeful commander of the Persian navy. It is a follow-up to the 2007 film 300, taking place before, during, and after the events of that film. The film will also focus on the naval Battle of Salamis (480BC), just south of Athens, in which Artemisia played a major role, as well as possibly the much earlier Battle of Marathon (490BC), from the first Persian invasion of Greece.

Director: Rob Minkoff
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
The Grand Budapest Hotel tells of a legendary concierge, Gustave H, at a famous European hotel between the wars and his friendship with a young employee, Zero Moustafa, who becomes his trusted protégé. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting, the battle for an enormous family fortune and the slow and then sudden upheavals that transformed Europe during the first half of the 20th century.
Mr. Peabody (Ty Burrell), the most accomplished canine in the world, and his boy, Sherman (Max Charles), use a time machine called the Wabac to embark on outrageous adventures. However, when Sherman takes the Wabac without permission to impress his friend Penny (Ariel Winter), he accidentally rips a hole in the universe and causes havoc with world history. It’s up to Mr. Peabody to mount a rescue and prevent the past, present and future from being permanently altered.

‘Binionaire’ slots a red hot tradition
S
John G. Brokopp
ome slot machines come and go, others go on and on. So it is with the “Who Wants to Be a Binionaire” progressives at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond. The machines are a time-honored Horseshoe tradition that dates back when gaming industry legend Jack Binion acquired the property and rebranded it. Binionaire made its debut at the Shoe in November of 2000. Nearly 14 years later it is still going strong as evidenced by the doublebarreled jackpot frenzy that took place on Saturday, February 22. That evening at 9:35 p.m. a player identified as Donna H. lined up the three jackpot symbols across the pay line to hit the progressive for a whopping $222,587.43 for a three dollar investment. Just minutes later as the Horseshoe slot staff was processing the lucky winner, they watched as Colette T. won a jackpot of $75,195.77 for a $1.50 investment on the fifty-cent bank of Binionaire progressives. Legend reminds us that jackpots which hit with relative frequency are part of the lore of Binionaire. During one memorable four-week period early in its history at the Shoe, the progressive jackpot was hit four times for a total of $611,163. The hot streak started with a $156,222 hit, followed 15 days later by one for $152,217. Less than 24 hours later it popped again for $150,042, followed just 15 days later by a $152,682 bonanza one month to the day when all the excitement started. A harbinger of things to come took place during its first year of operation when Binionaire was won three times in less than a month for jackpots of $278,000, $153,000, and $172,000. Similar binges have taken place in more recent years. The longevity of Binionaire is even more remarkable because the machines are traditional three-reel spinners on a slot floor dominated by multi-line video slots with bonus rounds. “Who Wants to Be a Binionaire” first appeared in 2000 at the Horseshoe branded property in Tunica, Miss. Jack Binion and his staff monitored the game, liked what they saw, and decided to duplicate it in Hammond. The burning desire of slot players to line up the images of a smiling Jack Binion jackpot symbol across the pay line on the dollar

progressive quickly spawned a fifty-cent bank of progressive machines The dollar bank is seeded with $150,000 every time it is claimed, while the fifty-cent carousel of machines starts with a $75,000 jackpot. A percentage of the money that people play on the machines is added to the jackpot until someone wins. It takes a three-coin max bet to be eligible for the jackpot, which means a bet of $3 per spin on the dollar progressive and $1.50 on the fifty-cent progressive. It’s a fact that veteran slot players often target an attractive progressive jackpot, be it on a video poker machine or a traditional slot. The higher the progressive the higher the potential return on investment.

enedict occupies the restaurant space previously housing Svago’s Ristorante. Tosh, who mans the kitchen with two additional cooks, owned and operated A.G.’s Dining Room in Crete, Ill. for a few years. With Benedict, Tosh said he’d like to offer guests a pleasant dining experience starring a standout menu. “We’re bringing quality food, quality service and a quality price to people,” Tosh said. The owner/operator said he’s always been a fan of breakfast and wants to offer diners a way to “start their day out right” with a great meal. At Benedict, diners will find
a pleasant atmosphere with the setting decorated in brown, gold and rustic hues, attractive lighting and a bar situated at the entrance to the eatery as well as a bakery on the premises. Tosh said within a full weeks, he plans to start serving dinner at Benedict. Items for dinner will change seasonally as the lunch menu offerings and specials do now. When we visited Benedict for a recent Saturday breakfast, the eatery was filled with guests enjoying a variety of menu favorites from Eggs Benedict to omelets and pancakes. After perusing the menu, we decided to try the Traditional Bennie ($7); the Breakfast Nook breakfast bowl ($7); and Texas French Toast ($4

The Traditional Bennie proved a flavorful treat with smoked ham, poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce over English muffins while the Breakfast Nook bowl was also a winner piled high with a slightly spicy sausage, fresh green peppers, onions, tomatoes, hash browns and cheese. It was presented attractively with sunny side up eggs (customers can choose their style of eggs) and pumpernickel (customer’s choice of toast) placed in the bowl. Tosh said with Eggs Benedict being the signature item at the restaurant, he regularly features a special benedict in addition to the recipes on the regular menu. Among Eggs Benedicts featured are the Roasted Red Pepper Bennie ($7.50); Smoked Salmon Bennie ($9) and Tomato Bennie Florentine ($7). Breakfast bowls are another big seller and include creations such as the Mighty Irish ($8) featuring homemade corned beef hash, with
