money through such normal means as donations, memberships, grants and other accounts,” explained WVLP’s Executive Director Gregg Kovach. “Paul came up with the idea then shared it with others and eventually other station activists refined the idea into what it is today – a musical revue comprised of a diverse collection of local talent,” continued Kovach. “The event last year was an enormous success which surpassed our expectations. We think this year’s event will be even better than the last one.” “Stars Over Valpo” features a non-stop parade of regional musical artists each performing one original

oretta Simonet, one half of the Minneapolis-based folk duo Curtis and Loretta, considers stops at Valparaiso’s Front Porch Music to be a longtime highlight of their regular touring regiment. “That listening room is one of our favorite places,” she said. “For the type of music that we do – story songs, traditional music – it’s a quiet room. There’s no coffee machines blaring in the background or people drinking. It’s people listening to you and your music. And it’s an excellent place to play.” Scheduled to perform at Front Porch April 12, Simonet and her duo mate, Curtis Teague, have been making merry music together for nearly four decades now. The paths of Simonet, who was reared in Minnesota, and the Dallas-reared Teague, first crossed in Santa Cruz, Calif. in 1977. Romantic sparks flew first, with musical ones following shortly afterward. Both vocalists and multiinstrumentalists, Simonet and Teague are icons in the Twin City music strata and have played to audiences at venues and festivals across the country to rave reviews over the course of the last three decades plus. They have shared stages with the iconic likes of Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie as well as folk/acoustic mainstays such as Anne Hills, Greg Brown and Bill Staines. Their current tour has them logging in a hearty amount of time on the road this year, and Simonet couldn’t be happier. “What keeps us going is that energy that you get from people,” she said. “It’s incredible. You get up on stage, and you may be tired, and it’s the energy that we get from the audience that just keeps us going no matter what.” Performing and recording as Curtis and Loretta, the duo put out their first recorded effort, “Haymarket Minstrels,” in 1989, and followed that up with more

than a half dozen sets of both original, cover and traditional works; their most recent set, “Our Heritage in Song,” came out in 2009. While Simonet and Teague have kept up a constant touring itinerary since the release of “Heritage,” they put new recordings on the back burner for several years to tend to Simonet’s ailing mother, who passed away last month. “We kept playing together the whole time for all those years … but now we’ll have more time,” Simonet said in regard to future recording. “I have written several new songs and will have a couple new songs for this tour. Right now we’re working on the (songs’) arrangements.” FYI: Curtis and Loretta will perform at 8pm April 12 at Front Porch Music, 505 E. Lincolnway, Valparaiso. Cost is $12. Fans will find characters such as Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster, Baby Bear, Grover, Murray, who makes his live stage debut, and others involved in the musical merriment in “Can’t Stop Singing.” O’Hara said a mix of signature Sesame Street tunes along with other popular songs and music written for this specific production will all be a part of the show. “The audience will experience brand new songs and parodies on popular music,” she said. singing soft versus loud and other techniques. For example, in the tune “It’s Raining Cookies,” a playful take-off on the pop song “It’s Raining Men,” Cookie Monster learns how to sing fast versus slow. “Sesame Street has made learning fun for kids and adults in the audience,” O’Hara said, about the popular television show and its live renditions. In “Can’t Stop Singing,” fans will also get a chance to see one of the favorite characters who hasn’t been on stage for the last decade. “Hoots the Owl makes a comeback,” O’Hara said, adding “he serves as wise counsel to Elmo and Abby Cadabby. Another surprise moment in the show, O’Hara said, will be Oscar the Grouch’s performance. She said people are used to seeing him sing and talk in his can but this time, fans will see Oscar dance. There’ll also be mini stages off to the side of the main stage where characters will perform. About the fact that audiences are so fond of Sesame Street and its
beloved cast of loveable muppets, O’Hara said, “Everyone knows who the characters are and each one has a definite personality. Everyone can relate to one of the characters.” The lessons learned through this show are varied, O’Hara said. “Elmo teaches respect for other people’s property, that magic is something to be dealt with very carefully and that even though singing is fun, anything done to the extreme loses its magic,” she said. The age appeal of the show, according to O’Hara, is wide, with young toddlers to adults, who have long been fans of Sesame Street, easily engaging in the storyline, action and music in the production. uring the 19 years actor Ivan Rutherford toured and starred in productions of the legendary musical “Les Miserables,” having logged more than 2,000 performances as the lead Jean Valjean, he never played any of the famed stages and marquees of Chicago. “While many of my years were in New York on Broadway, including the 20th anniversary revival, I also did the national tours, just never any through Chicago,” Rutherford said during an interview last week. He was in between curtain times reprising his role of Jean Valjean for a new production of “Les Miserables,” finally for Chicagoland audiences, at Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. “To be in this production with new staging, such a great cast and playing this intimate space gives this story and the musical numbers a new life so this also becomes a new experience for me as well.” In celebration of the stage space’s 30th anniversary, Drury Lane Theatre selected the passionate and moving musical journey, which opened Tuesday, April 8 and continues until June 8. Directed by multi-Jeff Award winner Rachel Rockwell, Rutherford is cast opposite Jeff Award-winner Quentin Earl Darrington as Javert and Jennie Sophia as Fantine. The sweeping tale of “Les Misérables” features a book by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg,
lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, and music by Claude-Michel Schönberg. Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, “Les Misérables” travels through three turbulent decades of 19th century France. Steeped with romance, passion, suspense and humanity, it is the story of the fugitive Jean Valjean, who is in a lifelong struggle to evade being captured as he is relentlessly pursued by the sanctimonious Inspector Javert. “Les Misérables” is the winner of more than 50 international theater awards, including eight 1987 Tony Awards (two of which were for Best Musical and Best Score) and the
musical has been translated into 21 different languages and has been seen by more than 65 million people worldwide. This production also stars Jeff Award-winner Mark David Kaplan as Thenardier as the story’s conniving innkeeper with Sharon Sachs as his bawdy barkeep wife Madame Thenardier and Christina Nieves as their long-suffering daughter Eponine while Skyler Adams plays Marius opposite Emily Rohm as Cosette. Jeff Award-winner Roberta Duchak serves as Musical Director. The colossal French Revolution-era set is by Scott Davis with Lighting Design by Greg Hofmann and Projection Design by Sage Marie Carter. his temporary home for four months during the musical’s run as a special milestone chapter in the Drury Lane history. During the past 30 years, Drury Lane Theatre has provided 10,208 performances staged, 7,683 actors have been employed, and more than 9 million people have enjoyed the venue’s 308 productions and concerts. And along the way, Drury Lane has hired more than 10,000 musicians, designers, and crew members. “Working with Rachel Rockwell has made this run something special because she understands all of the challenges of stage for both actors and the production process,” Rutherford said. “The story of my character Jean Valjean is also something special for me at this point of my career because I feel I understand him now better than ever. When I started in 1995 with this role, I only had one child. Now, I have three. The struggles faced as a father are so much more clear to me now, as I think about what Jean Valjean is going through.” As for the attention and audiences last year’s big screen adaption of “Les Miserables” garnered, Rutherford has his own opinion. “It was a movie and that treatment of the story was very clear,” he said. “Yes, it did attract new audiences who didn’t know the characters and the journey. But seeing the story on stage is the way this journey is intended.” WHAT: “Les Miserables” • WHERE: Drury Lane Theatre, 100 Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. • WHEN: Now through June 8 with performance 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays, 1:30 and 8 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays, 5 and 8:45 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and 6 p.m. Sundays. • HOW MUCH: $30 to $60 with lunch and dinner theater packages available. Student group tickets start as low as $30 and Senior Citizens start at $40 for matinees and $55 for a matinee luncheon package. • FYI: (630) 530-8300 or drurylane.com.

or Jason Utesch, helming Valparaiso’s Chicago Street Theatre’s production of “Play it Again, Sam” is an ideal fit. “In the shows that I’ve directed, I seem to be drawn to an imaginary character or something that’s offkilter, where there’s a playfulness with reality,” he said. “You have that, and you have this great humor already in the script.” Running through April 19, “Sam” tells the tale of Allan Felix, a shy, San Francisco-based screenwriter returning to the dating scene following a troubling divorce. To guide him through the singles strata, Felix relies on a fictional guide in the form of Humphrey Bogart. Allen penned “Sam” in 1968 and starred as Felix when it made its Broadway debut a year later. It ran with more than 450 performances and received a trio of Tony Awards, including a best supporting actress award for Diane Keaton. In 1972, Allen adapted his play for the big screen, with both himself and Keaton revising their onstage roles, to great acclaim. “Usually, if I read a script and I laugh out loud, it’s a good sign, and I did that a few times with this one,” Utesch said. “You have the humor that’s there, the tight writing, the whimsical play on reality, and then the opportunity to play this as a
n w i .co m /g o
period piece. All combined, it makes for something interesting.” Jordan Chaddock from Porter plays Felix and Valparaiso’s Jeff Schultz portrays Bogart in Chicago Street’s “Sam.” They are joined onstage by Lindsey Elderkin from Valparaiso as Felix’ ex wife, Nancy, Lowell’s Matt Stinnett as Felix’ friend Dick Christie, Valparaiso’s Mary DeBoer as Dick’s wife, Linda, and a trio of Valparaiso-based thesps, Lori Utesch, Rebecca Fortner and Melissa Daloisio, assuming multiple roles of women who catch Felix’ fancy. While remaining loyal to the era in which “Sam” was originally written, staged and filmed, Utesch and Chaddock made a point to put their own touches on the main character. “One of the things (Chaddock) and I talked about when he was cast was that we don’t want a Woody Allen impersonation,” Utesch said. “We want that type of character, the intelligent, awkward person who doesn’t realize that he’s awkward, but not Woody Allen.” Next up for Chicago Street Theatre is a production of the drama “Rabbit Hole,” scheduled to open May 23. FYI: “Play it Again, Sam” will be performed at 8pm. April 11 and 12 and April 17 to 19 and 2:30pm. April 13 at Chicago Street Theatre, 154 W. Chicago St., Valparaiso. Tickets are $18 adults, $15 students and seniors and adults in groups of 10 people or more, $12 students in groups of 10 people or more. Call (219) 464-1636 or visit CHICAGOSTREET.ORG

COURTESY THE STUDIOS
DRAFT DAY
1 hr 49 min | PG-13 | Released April 11
Director: Ivan Reitman In “Draft Day,” on the day of the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver Jr. (Kevin Costner) has the opportunity to rebuild his team when he trades for the number one pick. He must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on a lifechanging day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL. Director Ivan Reitman comments, “It was never my intention to make a great football movie. It was not a dream of mine, even though I’m a big football fan. I just happened to get this script, and I actually remember reading it in the middle of the night. I fell in love with it and couldn’t stop reading it. I read it in less than an hour. It’s a page-turner. You get totally caught up, the way I did there in the middle of the night. Kevin Costner’s character gets himself into a real bind, where he’s put his own career and his own team’s future in real jeopardy. Watching him unwind that is almost a mystery story, and we discover it as he figures things out.”

CASINO SCENE
Keep your head in the game J OHN G. BROKOPP / JBROKOPP@COMCAST.NET
P
eople have different reasons for making visits to a casino part of their entertainment regimen. The one incentive common among them is the hope of winning money. For some, winning money means hitting a jackpot. For others, it means just coming out ahead. As a rule, the higher you set your expectations the less your chances of walking out the door happy. Jackpots are not easy to hit. Chasing them is a recipe for disaster. The availability of gambling in a casino is now a short drive from home for a majority of residents of Northwest Indiana and the greater Chicago area. Frequent trips demand a mindset that will make you happy if you only win a little or simply break even. Let the jackpots come when they may. Going for broke every time you visit a casino will result in just that. Recreational casino gambling is a
world apart from that once-a-year trip to Vegas. One strategy is to establish a goal. This could mean being a specific amount of money ahead, or perhaps even doubling your money. Once you have attained the goal you set for yourself, the next hurdle to overcome is sticking to it. It can be so easy to take “just one more twenty” and try your luck before calling it a day. The danger is that twenty will lead to another one and still another. Before you know it you’ve given all of your winnings back and are starting to work on the bankroll you came with. Squirreling away vouchers instead of putting them back into the machines is one easy way to preserve a winning casino trip. Modern technology has its disadvantages, too. It’s easy to lose perspective of just how much money you have in a machine when it is revealed to you in the form of a lighted display on a credit meter.
