hicago Street Theatre’s “One Night Jam” series continues tomorrow with a performance by singer/ songwriter Gurf Morlix and special guest Ralston Bowles. The two artists team up for an intimate evening of storytelling and Americana/Roots music in the venue’s upstairs Edith B. Wood Performance Studio. Gurf Morlix is touring in support of his latest album, “Gurf Morlix Finds the Present Tense,” ten songs of desperation and desire, delivered in an almost unsettlingly honest style.

Though Morlix is best known for his production skills on successful albums by artists like Ray Wylie Hubbard, Lucinda Williams, and Robert Earl Keen, his own records are top spins by Folk/Roots stations across the country and in Europe. More: gurfmorlix.com Sharing the bill with Morlix for this “One Night Jam” is Grand Rapids singer/ songwriter Ralston Bowles who has been called “the godfather of West Michigan’s acoustic music scene.” An award-winning musician, Bowles has opened concerts for many top names during his career, including Shawn Colvin, T Bone Burnett, Arlo Guthrie

occupations. A veteran songsmith with a dozen albums recorded over the course of the last two decades-plus, the East Coast-based Sheridan is also an acclaimed playwright and performance artist and passionate music instructor. “It kind of has to work that way,” she said. “If you’re going to be a full-time artist, you’ve just got to have a lot of arrows in your quiver. Scheduled to perform April 25 at Valparaiso’s Front Porch Music, Sheridan studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In the early ‘90s, she wowed folk audiences with performances at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado. Finding lyrical inspiration in everything from life experiences to current events and politics to ancient history and mythology, Sheridan released her debut, “Quietly Led,” in 1992 and has regularly released a string of recordings since. Away from the studio and stage, she has also taught music at camps and workshops throughout the country and, in 2008, created the Moab Folk Camp, which brings acclaimed musicians throughout the country to Southeastern Utah annually to pass on their skills and knowledge to aspiring musicians and songwriters. Additionally, 10 years ago, Sheridan debuted “The Pomegranate Seed,” a one-woman show that chronicles her life experiences as well as those of other women. Sheridan still performs the show occasionally today. Sheridan, who now resides in Massachusetts, after residing for

Smiling at success Vince Gill happy with 25-year career and return to Star Plaza stage ‌PHILIP POTEMPA / PHILIP.POTEMPA@NWI.COM‌

sk singer Vince Gill about the music and performers he was inspired by in his youth, and his answer varies with his reflection. “It changes with whatever age you are at the time,” said Gill, talking by telephone earlier this month from his home in Nashville. “My list is long and ranges from Chet Atkins, Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton to bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt.” An ever-relaxed Gill took a break from recording work in his home studio to do the telephone interview on Wednesday, April 9, just three days prior to his 57th birthday on April 12. “Yep, it’s a special birthday this year because I turn 57 and I was born in 1957,” said Gill, who returns to Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville for one 8 p.m. concert Thursday, May 8. He last performed for Star Plaza audiences in April 2012. Gill reminds his musical journey began long before he launched his professional career. Born in Norman, Okla., it was his father, J. Stanley Gill, a lawyer-turned-administrative law judge who also played in a country music band part-time, who encouraged his son to learn to play several instruments, including the banjo and guitar, bass, mandolin, dobro and fiddle. While still in high school, he performed in the bluegrass band Mountain Smoke, which he said built a strong local following and opened a concert for Pure Prairie League, the group he would eventually join as the lead singer in 1979. He left the group in 1981 and joined Rodney Crowell’s backing band the Cherry Bombs. “I’ve always enjoyed being part of the supporting artists for a performance,” Gill said. “And I’m proud of the great history and support that have always been part of the country music industry for welcoming new talent.” In 1983, Gill signed with RCA Records and moved with his wife Janis and daughter Jenny to Nashville to pursue his dream of being a

country music artist. By 1987 he achieved his first Top 5 single, “Cinderella,” from his album The Way Back Home. In addition to performing as a solo artist, Gill also worked frequently as a studio musician, wrote songs for other artists and toured with Emmylou Harris. It was when Gill signed with MCA Records in 1989 and released the album When I Call Your Name that his debut single “Oklahoma Swing” with Reba McEntire reached the Top 20. But it was the title cut that firmly established the singer as a new force on the Country Music scene when the song peaked at No. 2 and earned Gill his first CMA Award for Single of the Year and his first Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1990. “To have the chance to be invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and have my parents be able to see me perform on the same stage as their heroes, was something very special because those same names are my heroes, like Roy Acuff, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Bill Monroe and Little Jimmy Dickens,” he said. Becoming an in-demand duet partner, Gill sang with Amy Grant on “House of Love,” the title cut of her 1994 album which became a hit on adult contemporary radio stations. He said The Key, released in 1998, was a return to Country while chronicling “the turmoil in his life including the death of his father and the breakup of his first marriage.” Gill married singer Amy Grant in 2000, and released Let’s Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye

that same year. The album celebrated his new relationship and featured the hit “Feels Like Love.” The couple celebrated the birth of their daughter Corrina Grant Gill in 2001. “I love performing at Star Plaza Theatre because the audiences care about who they are seeing on stage,” Gill said. “Sure, there are times I get offered big money to play a big casino, but you don’t always know who’s going to be in the audience and if they are there because they want to hear the music and see the performer or if they just received a comp ticket. Do I still play some of these dates? Sure, because you have to pay the bills. But performance is like a conversation. It needs to be two-way, so you don’t want an audience that is indifferent.” Gill has sold more than 26 million albums. He has earned 18 CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year in 1993 and 1994. He is tied with George Strait for having won the most CMA Male Vocalist Awards (five), and is currently second only to Brooks and Dunn for accumulating the most CMA Awards in history. He has received 20 Grammy Awards to date, the most of any male Country artist. An avid golfer, he helped create the annual Vince Gill Pro-Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament (“The Vinny”) in 1993 to help support junior golf programs throughout Tennessee. In August of 2007, the Country Music Association inducted Gill into the coveted Country Music Hall of Fame. As for today’s young singing and music artists, Gill said he doesn’t agree with criticism of television programs created to spotlight potential performance talent. “I dont’ really think shows like ‘American Idol’ or ‘The Voice’ are all that different from way back when it was Ed Sullivan and Arthur Godrey introducing new faces to the public,” Gill said. “If there’s really talent and drive, careers will happen and the platform is just a springboard.” As for Gill’s association with reality TV, he said he gets approached to participate but his management team knows him well. “Everyone knows what I will and won’t do,” Gill said. “I’m a singer. So when they keep asking me to be on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ I just tell them that they really don’t want to see me dancing.” WHAT: Vince Gill in Concert • WHERE: Star Plaza Theatre, I-65 and U.S. 30, Merrillville • WHEN: 8pm Thursday, May 8 • HOW MUCH: $37 and $47 • FYI: 800.745.3000 or starplazatheatre.com

Lyric Opera is alive with the ‘Sound of Music’ New production stars Billy Zane as Captain von Trapp ‌Eloise Marie Valadez / Eloise.Valadez@nwi.com‌

ince its debut on stage in 1959 and its 1965 film premiere, the iconic musical production “The Sound of Music” has been a beloved favorite with theater and music fans. With its lively score by Rodgers and Hammerstein and its engaging story of the Trapp Family singers, the show has become one of the most popular musicals in the last five decades. Now, Windy City audiences will have another version of the hit musical to enjoy. Lyric Opera of Chicago opens its new production of “The Sound of Music” Friday at The Civic Opera House in Chicago. The musical, starring actor Billy Zane as Captain von Trapp and Jenn Gambatese as Maria, runs through May 18. The show is part of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s American Musical Theater Initiative. Chicago native Zane, who has portrayed Billy Flynn in the Broadway production of “Chicago” and starred in the movie “Titanic,” among other roles, said he’s looking forward to stepping into the role of Captain von Trapp in this new production. “It’s thrilling and it qualifies as a pinch-me moment,” said Zane, about portraying the “extraordinary character” of the Captain. About making his Lyric Opera debut, Zane said “I have been blessed to play in a few of the finest theaters in the world, from the Royal Haymarket on London’s West End to the Shubert on Broadway. The Lyric takes the cake!

The scope, the history, the beauty. I am humbled, which as you now can imagine is no easy task,” he said. For Jenn Gambatese, bringing Maria to life on stage is also a great honor. “And to be doing it here in Chicago is wonderful,” Gambatese said. “I love Chicago.” Gambatese said the glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein score can’t be beat. “The songs are classics for a reason. The melodies are rich and the songs are such a joy to sing,” she said. The tunes, she added, resonate with many people. Among the popular tunes in “The Sound of Music” are “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “Do Re Mi,” and the title song. Gambatese anticipates performing at the Lyric Opera will be “simultaneously thrilling and a little scary. It’s such a hallowed hall.” The story of “The Sound of Music” as it relays a segment of the life of the Trapp family singers and the relationship between the Captain and governess-turned wife Maria, captures Zane’s attention on many levels. He said what he finds most interesting about the story is “Thematically, it’s the national pride and character of von Trapp’s Austrian position and emotionally, the dealing with the virtues and shortcomings of a slightly militant perspective on life and how it melds in the family fold.” He added it’s also touching to see

Billy Zane and Jenn Gambatese star in “The Sound of Music,” now at The Civic Opera House in Chicago. Provided

how the Captain is guided to a more sensitive space through his love for Maria. One of Zane’s favorite moments in the production, he said, is “When the Captain hears his children harmonize so beautifully and his world changes.” Zane commented that he enjoyed as much as he could of the recent live production of “The Sound of Music,” starring Carrie Underwood, that aired on television. “I actually had the curious opportunity of watching it in the bar at the Hyatt in Chicago,” he said, adding it was “the closest place he could find a television” after he attended a ceremony to receive a “Man of the Year” honor from Men’s Health Magazine. “It was muted,” he said. So he caught the whole broadcast later on YouTube . He mentioned the bar had many televisions but securing one of them and turning the channel from a hockey

broadcast probably didn’t go over well with other patrons. Zane said he’s long been a fan of live television broadcasts, including the variety shows of decades past. “I was impressed with the choreography and the direction of ‘The Sound of Music’ live broadcast,” he said. Taking a cue from a favorite song in the production, Zane commented about some of “his favorite things.” “With respect to the wicked winter (Chicagoans) stomached, certainly not snowflakes that stay on your nose and eyelashes! Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes never disappoint.” Actress/singer Gambatese calls “The Sound of Music” a “joyful and exuberant production and one that’s so full of love and heart.” FYI: “The Sound of Music” will be performed Friday to May 18 at The Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago. Tickets start at $29. For tickets, call 321.827.5600 or visit lyricopera.org/soundofmusic

Keeping ‘Company’ at Memorial Opera House

‌S

‌Tim Shellberg / Times Correspondent‌

cot PJ MacDonald, director of Valparaiso’s Memorial Opera House’s production of “Company,” expects viewers to leave the theater with their own unique take on the acclaimed musical. “I hope they walk away and take a look at the relationships that they’re in and that these characters are in,” he said. “I hope they say ‘wow. I’m glad I’m not in a relationship like that’ or ‘I know someone who’s in a relationship like that’ or ‘I’ve experienced that.’ I hope they walk away feeling love for themselves or the relationships that they’re in.” Running Friday through May 11, “Company” chronicles, through brief vignettes, the trials and tribulations of Robert, a 30-something single man, his married peers, and a series of

girlfriends, making their way through their lives, both individually and amongst each other, in the Big Apple. Penned by Chicago-reared playwright and thesp George Furth, it features music by Stephen Sondheim. Songs include “Being Alive,” “Someone is Waiting” and “Have I Got a Girl for You.” “Company” made its Broadway debut in the spring of 1970 and ran for more than 700 performances and took home nearly a half dozen Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Music and Lyrics for Sondheim. In 1995 and 2006, “Company” was revived along the Great White Way. “It’s a nice, appealing look at how relationships work,” said MacDonald, who also serves as Memorial Opera House’s artistic director. “It’s not an ‘Oklahoma’ or a classical musical.

doing such a great job in presenting the realistic side of the story and have stayed true to their characters.” While “Company” was penned and set in the Big Apple in the early ‘70s, MacDonald and his cast and crew opted to turn the clocks back a few years, placing his characters in 1967. “The social issues that took place (in 1967) were a little bit softer than, say, putting it in today,” MacDonald said. “By today’s standards, a lot of the social issues (in 1967) weren’t that big of a deal.” Next up for Memorial Opera House is a production of “The Glass Menagerie,” scheduled to open June 13.

We’re trying to expose our audience to work that’s a little more contemporary and, while this is a little bit of an older show, (the stories) still ring true today, and it is a little more contemporary, style-wise.” Michael Snyder from Cedar Lake plays Robert in the production. He is joined onstage by JoBeth Cruz, Michael Glorioso, Heather Clark, Colleen Peluso, John Peluso and Andrew Brent from Valparaiso, DeMotte’s Laura Simmons, Schererville’s Justin Treasure and Lisa Woodruff-Hedin from Munster as his married peers. Additionally, Miller’s Kelli Manigrasso, Munster’s Madolyn Hedin and Chesterton’s Stephanie Rice portray Robert’s girlfriends. “I could not ask for a better cast or a better crew to work with,” MacDonald said. “The cast is just top-notch. They’ve really worked hard and are

Straight slot talk from an industry giant

‌S

‌JOHN G. BROKOPP /JGBROKOPP1@GMAIL.COM‌

eeking practical information about playing slot machines can be a very frustrating pursuit. It seems as far as the gaming industry is concerned, the less people know about the machines and how they really work, the better. In light of the total lack of useful information about slot machines coming from the casinos, it’s easy for curious players to become jaded. Allowing slot play to remain veiled in mystery and superstition has served the gaming industry well, so why should anything change? Even the best books written about slot machines can’t reveal everything simply because much about every individual machine’s play characteristics are the proprietary knowledge of the manufacturers and the casino owners. A while back while doing some research, I surfed International Game Technology’s Website (www.igt.com) and discovered what is the most valuable, precise and

thought-provoking information about slots available to the general public. Best of all, it’s free. Click “news room” on the home page and go to “press kits” where you’ll see “understanding gaming”. The topics you’ll discover include “Slot Machines: Separating Fact from Fiction”, and “Different Types of Electronic Gaming”, There’s also this gem, “Introduction to Slots and Video Gaming”, a Pdf download which was compiled by the folks at IGT, one of the world’s leaders in the research and development of slot machines and other services and products for the gaming industry. The booklet doesn’t contain the publicity “puff” info you’d expect to find from a publication of this nature, but rather a substantial compilation of facts and insight. What’s more, it’s written from a casino insider perspective that gives outsiders a rare glimpse into slot dynamics as seen through the eyes of casino owners. The ultimate wish for players is access to a machine’s so-call par sheets which reveal details about the hold (casino win) percentage, payback percentage, hit frequency, odds against winning the top award and other vital statistics. All of it is proprietary information to which the gambling public has no access, and while the section in the booklet titled “Slot Math” certainly isn’t the mother lode, it just may be closest the average player will ever get to it. It begins with a definition of terms such as stops, reel cycle, hits per cycle, jackpot odds, hit frequency and pulls/hit (which, incidentally, refers to the “theoretical number of plays between pays”), followed by examples of elementary slot math for three

different game formats using equations that “represent the most basic operations only”. For example, if, on a 3-reel slot game the reel cycle (number of possible combinations) is 32,768 and the top award symbol appears twice each on reels one and two and once on reel three, the jackpot should hit once every 8,192 reel spins. On a 5-reel/15-line video slot with a reel cycle of 62,015,625 where the top award symbol appears once each on lines one, two and four and twice each on reels three and five, the jackpot should theoretically hit once every 15,503,906 reel spins. Some of the marketing strategies found later in the booklet give average players an idea of the psychology behind slot design, casino floor signage, slot placement and the mix of games. Overall, it’s a great source of information and a must-read for everyone who plays slots.

BONUS ROUND-UP: HORSESHOE: The property teamed up with Chicago Gateway Green to celebrate Earth Day on Tuesday of this week. At 8 p.m. a “lights out” ceremony was held which included turning off the 7,500 light bulbs which make up the famous Horseshoe marquee, mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest free-standing structure in the state of Indiana. Throughout April, the Shoe has been collecting donations from guests to support Chicago gateway Green, a non-profit organization dedicated to greening and beautifying Chicago’s expressways, gateways and neighborhoods. The casino will match donations up to $5,000 to help plant trees in the Chicago area.

he marriage of delicious dishes with the right libation is both an art and a craft. During Horseshoe Casino’s “Perfect Pairings” special events, the culinary staff is currently getting that recipe right. For the last few months, Horseshoe Casino in Hammond has been presenting its “Perfect Pairings” events held from 7 to 9 p.m. on select Thursdays. In the spotlight are various wines, beers and liquors paired with locally sourced foodstuffs. Guests gather in the casino’s Lakeview Room to taste the offerings. Live entertainment is often featured as well. “All the food is paired with the vendors in mind,” said Mark A. Angelus, executive chef of Horseshoe Casino Hammond. Angelus, who’s been at the culinary helm at Horseshoe for the past six months, said he pairs the flavors of the food with the flavor characteristics of the libations carefully. Before crafting the menu, Angelus takes a look at what vendors will bring to showcase and then gets to work creating the dishes. At the pairings event on April 17, a diverse selection of food and drink took the spotlight. Starring on the menu were: • Roasted ramps with sweet lemon vinaigrette, paired with Tabor Hill’s Demi Sec Red, Demi Sec White and Chardonnay • Stuffed suckling pig with fresh

• Parsnip and caraway eggs with sweet breads and foie gras along with a Cadbury Egg Station, paired with Traverse City Cherry Bourbon Chef Angeles said he tastes to see if a wine has “light, dry, fruity” or other overtones and tests what dishes will go best with each one. He said while many of the same vendors participate in the Perfect Pairings nights, they’ll often bring different wines, beers and liquors to try each time. So, Angelus’ menu is always changing to fit those offerings. “But nothing is so hardcore when you’re matching (the drinks) to food,” he said. Sometimes people just have to go with what they like. Angelus said if he’s looking to pair a heartier meat dish with a wine, he’ll opt for something with a crisp taste as well as something with a bit of a bold taste. Matching the intensity of the drink with a recipe is a good way to pair. The pairings events, Angelus said, have been attracting a good deal of attention. “It’s growing,” he said, adding interest in local wines and beers is popular now. “This is a nice event
