Detective still making a difference

T PROVIDED

Late Hammond Detective Joe Betustak Jr. continues to “make a difference” in local young lives nearly a decade after his death as the inspiration and namesake of the “Joe Betustak Jr. Memorial Foundation” that helps area families with seriously ill children.

he 9th annual Joe B. Memorial Bike Run and Concert produced by the family and friends of Detective Sgt. Joe Betustak Jr. returns to Hammond’s Wolf Lake Memorial Park Saturday. What began as a lone event to help with the sense of loss felt when bone cancer took their son and brother in 2005 after a long battle has evolved under the guiding hand of Joe Betustak Sr. into The Joe Betustak Memorial Foundation – a 501(c)(3) charity honoring the Hammond native who served his city for 13 years as a motorcycle officer, a member of the SWAT team, before

ending his career with the narcotics unit. The event always includes a motorcycle run assisted by The American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association (AVMRA) and a multi-band concert sponsored by The Cavalier Inn of Hammond. All money raised each year helps the families of specific Region youngsters currently battling cancer. The Foundation board has selected 5-year-old Jazmine DeJesus of Merrillville and 15-year-old Amber Gallagher of Highland to be this year’s recipients. “Joe always wanted to be a police officer and wanted to make a difference,” recalled younger brother, Scott Betustak.

“Doing this enables Joe to continue making a difference in the lives of local families who are in need.” This year’s all ages event begins with the morning motorcycle run (sign ups at 9 a.m., first bike out at 11 a.m., last bike in at 4 p.m. — $15 single rider, $25 double rider) and continues throughout the day with live music (11 a.m. to 10 p.m.) donated by area bands – TNT Jams (acoustic music), Remember When (doo wop vocal group), Just4That (pop/rock), and Pearl Jam tribute act, Rearview Mirror featuring Steve “Beaver” Lopez. ‘Killin’ Time’ for 25 years with country music’s Clint Black ‌TOM LOUNGES / TIMES CORRESPONDENT‌

‌I

t’s been a quarter century since Texas hitmaker Clint Black galloped onto the country music charts and into stardom with his debut album “Killin’ Time” that spawned five No. 1 charted singles – “A Better Man,” “Killin’ Time,” “Nobody’s Home,” “Walkin’ Away,” and “Nothing’s News.” That remains an unprecedented feat from any debut album of any musical genre. During his musical journey from the triple platinum “Killin’ Time” release to now, Black has collected an abundance of industry awards and accolades, the number of which surpasses the number of hit records he has made over the years. “Sometimes you gotta shake your head and wonder where the time has gone,” said Black, reflecting on his career and that first landmark album. The time has been spent releasing 10 more studio albums (plus two “Greatest Hits” packages, two holiday albums and a limited edition EP) and putting nearly two dozen additional No. 1’s and nearly as many Top 10s on the charts. Time has also been spent enjoying 20-plus years of marriage to fellow performer and wife Lisa Hartman-Black and sharing with her the joys of parenting 13-year-old daughter Lily Pearl. Black’s latest album “When I Say I Do” (a collection of re-recorded hits and a trio of newly written songs) hit in 2013 via Cracker Barrel Records which has become a favorite home for many veteran country stars, including Dolly Parton, The Oak Ridge Boys and Kenny Rogers. “A lot of my fans go to Cracker Barrel and eat there, so it was a really good fit,” said Black. “They are a great company to work with; very professional. My dealings with them have been fantastic.” An album of all new songs is already well underway. After a decade of running his own record label, The Equity Record Company, Black would like to bypass all the red tape that

comes with a record deal. “We’ll probably be doing things more direct online for this next one,” he said. “The gatekeepers are no long standing between artists and their fans. The barriers are down from the way it used to be and I’m really hopeful I can have a direct artist to fan relationship from this point forward.” Black includes a couple of new tunes in his current show. Black said he and wife Lisa Hartman-Black are planning to record another duet together. Their two previous pairings fared well on radio and the charts – 1999’s “When I Said I Do” (No. 1) and 2001’s “Easy for Me to Say” (No. 27). Although dates on Clint Black’s current 100-city tour are billed as “An Intimate Evening With…,” don’t expect just the man and his guitar up on stage. “I’ll do a little bit by myself, but then the band joins me,” said Black. “I’ve got three guys I’ve been sharing the stage with for almost 30 years with me on drums (Dick Gay), bass (Jake Willieman) and guitars (Hayden Nicholas), and Dwayne Roe has joined us for the first time on tour playing keyboards. When we

first started this (tour) we stayed on acoustic guitars the whole show, but we’ve since added in some electric guitars and the keys.” This tour has Black doing nearly double the dates of recent years. “This is the heaviest touring I’ve done in a while,” said Black, adding how his manager suggested he step back from doing huge arenas, fairs and multi-artist tours in favor of a small theater tour. “Some theaters we’re doing are only 400-seaters and I love the intimacy of it.” Being the only artist on the bill this time out, gives Black the chance to play more songs than usual. The current show has all the hits people come to hear and some tunes he has not played live in a while. “I try to include something from every album,” he said, with a special emphasis on deeper cuts from “Killin’ Time.” To commemorate the 25th “Killin’ Time” anniversary, Black plans to create some special things for his YouTube channel and web site (ClintBlack.com). Those things may include interviewing musicians and the production folks who worked on that first album with him and maybe some live recordings of songs from it. On stage, Black likes to set up some of the songs with stories. “Don’t worry, I don’t get all longwinded,” he promised. “My stories are really designed for laughs. Talking to an audience is as much fun for me as singing the songs.” Black did a stint a while back on the CBS-TV show – “Secret Talents of the Stars” – revealing razor-sharp timing and a real knack for comedy. Black told a story about being at some industry event in Nashville or Los Angeles when a technical problem sidelined his performance. “I had to stand up there with nothing to do but talk to an audience filled with some of the biggest names in the business while they worked on fixing the gear,” he said. “That’s when I went for some laughs. I wouldn’t want to do it full

time, but I love comedy and joke writing. I’ve worked some of that into my show over the years.” Looking back over the 25-year stretch since the release of “Killin’ Time” made him a superstar attraction, Black spoke of the real “high water marks” of his career. “Getting to write a song with Merle Haggard and other musical heroes like Kenny Loggins, Jimmy Buffet, Edgar Winter, Bruce Hornsby,” cited Black. “To work with artists I respect and artists I never dreamed of even being in the same room with. Awards are wonderful symbols of accomplishment, but creating a song with one of your heroes is even more wonderful.” “Realizing I’ve transcended my own aspirations as a musician is a personal high water mark,” continued Black. “I practice all the time and I’ve worked hard to push that boulder up a hill so to speak, so to see that paying off as my skill set becomes much better than I ever expected it could, to be playing at a level I thought was out of my reach, gives me a sense of achievement and accomplishment.” Another notable accomplishment is Black’s hard work and dedication to the International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF), a neurological and developmental disorder that struck home for the artist when he lost a niece to it. Black is the Honorary Chair for the IRSF’s “Research to Reality: Funding Progress” campaign and has links on his website so fans can learn more and help him fund research for a cure. Black said he’s enjoying the closeness to the fans his current theater tour is affording him because when all is said and done, he said the fans matter most. FYI: An Intimate Evening with Clint Black will be performed at 7:30p.m. Sunday, May 18 at Star Plaza Theatre, Interstate 65 and U.S. 30, Merrillville. Tickets are $37 and $47. ‘Golden Boy’ Frankie Avalon still capturing fans’ hearts ‌ loise Marie Valadez / Eloise.Valadez@ E nwi.com‌

‌H

e was one of the first of the teen idols to capture fans’ hearts. Today, legendary singer Frankie Avalon is still entertaining admirers and retro music lovers with his engaging shows filled with hits such as “Venus,” “Why” and “Beauty School Dropout.” Avalon is scheduled to perform two shows in Chicagoland next week. He’ll take the stage at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 20 at Drury Lane Oakbrook in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. “I’ve loved playing there,” he said about Drury Lane, where he’s graced the stage before as well as other theaters that were part of the Drury Lane family through the years. The singer said he’s long been a fan of Chicago-area audiences as well as the city itself. “I love the people,” he said, adding he’s grateful for the fans and the friendships he’s made through the years he’s been touring. “The most important thing is the fact they didn’t ever leave me.” His fan base remains supportive and dedicated. Avalon’s history of playing the Chicago area is rich and varied. He’s performed at places such as Navy Pier and the former Edgewater Beach Hotel. Back in the mid-’90s and early 2000’s, he even performed a mini show featuring his hits during the popular interactive theater piece “Tony and Tina’s Wedding” in Chicago’s Old Town where he played the role of Tina’s Godfather. While “Tony and Tina’s Wedding” was also a hit in New York, Avalon said he starred only in the Windy City version of the comical show. “I only did it in Chicago because it was very well done.” He commented he not only enjoyed doing that show but it also gave him a chance to bring his wife and other family members to the city since he’d perform a

couple of weeks or so at a time in the production. Avalon said Drury Lane audiences this time around can expect a concert featuring his ‘50s and ‘60s hits as well as popular tunes from his beach party movies with Annette Funicello and more. The singer said after all the years of touring and performing, he’s still enjoying his career. “The most important thing about being a true performer is just enjoying getting up on stage and making people happy. I’m in a profession that’s really very uplifting,” he said. When he listens to other artists’ work, Avalon usually gravitates toward the retro music makers. “I still love the ‘50s and ‘60s,” he said, counting Nat King Cole and Sinatra among favorites. He believes the music of that time was, and still is, special. “I don’t down what’s happening today but there were the wonderful melodies and something you could get emotional about” in that music. The singer, who looks back on his beach party movie making days with Annette, with fondness, said he misses the actress/singer. Funicello, who fought a long battle with multiple sclerosis, died in April 2013. “We just had the same mutual admiration for each other. We were friends. And I was godfather to her daughter Gina. I miss her dearly,” Avalon said. In addition to a regular touring schedule across the country, Avalon is also busy at work on another creative project. “I’m in the midst of doing a cookbook for St. Martin’s Press,” he said. The cookbook will feature dishes he’s created and family recipes his mother gave him. There’s no formal release date yet. FYI: Frankie Avalon performs at 1:30p.m. May 19 and 20 at Drury Lane Theatre, 1 Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace. Tickets are $65. ctor Mark A. Harmon is convinced fans of the Broadway musical “Mamma Mia!” rank in dedication and enthusiasm at a level comparable to no other stage show following. “When I talk to our audiences, I meet people who are sometimes driving five hours or more just to see ‘Mamma Mia!’ when it comes to the nearest city to their home,” said Harmon, who plays one of the fickle could-be fathers-of-the bride in the musical tale of weddings and what ifs set to the songs of ABBA. Broadway In Chicago is hosting this week’s limited engagement for Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ “Mamma Mia!,” playing through Sunday at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago. Seen by more than 54 million people around the world, “Mamma Mia!,” is celebrating 5,000 performances on Broadway and ranks as the 9th longest running show in Broadway history. The original West End production is now in its 15th year and has celebrated more than 6,000 performances in London and the international tour has visited more than 74 foreign cities in 35 countries and been seen by over 4.3 million people. The blockbuster 2008 feature film adaptation of “Mamma Mia!” is the most successful movie musical of all time grossing $600 million worldwide. However, Harmon admits he’s still among the ranks of those who have

not seen the movie version. “I am going to see the movie, and I know I’m way overdue to watch it,” said Harmon, who lives near Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and has logged more than 200 performances with this tour, which will end its U.S. run on June 15. “Mamma Mia!” is the tale of independent, single mother Donna, who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, as she prepares for her daughter Sophie’s dream wedding, with some help from gal pals, the practical and no-nonsense Rosie and the wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya, who were part of her past life as the singing trio Donna and the Dynamos. When Sophie secretly invites three guests of her own, three possible dads as the final puzzle piece of her parentage, the walk down the aisle becomes a wait-and-see mystery set to the memorable songs and music of ABBA. All of the favorite hits like “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” keep audiences returning to the fun and fantasy of musical romance. This tour is produced by Work Light Productions. Harmon said he auditioned for his role after some urging from the tour’s casting director. “About a year earlier, I had auditioned for the national tour of ‘Catch Me If You Can’ and didn’t get a role,” said Harmon, whose only other national tour was playing the role of Wilbur Turnblad in “Hairspray” in 2010. “But when it came time to cast

It features choreography by Anthony Van Laast, production design by Mark Thompson, lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken.

Harmon said he’s also found this tour has served as his stage inspiration to stay fit and trim. “Besides the now infamous spandex costumes in tribute to ABBA, I also have a scene in my bathing suit,” Harmon said. “Fortunately, I’ve been blessed with a metabolism that is very forgiving so I don’t gain weight easily.” WHAT: “Mamma Mia!” • WHERE: Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Proper table etiquette applies if you play craps ‌JOHN G. BROKOPP / JBROKOPP1@GMAIL.COM‌

‌C

raps, more than any other casino game, is filled with superstition. There are certain things you must do before you step up to the table to play to avoid having that beginner’s spotlight shining brightly upon you. First of all, never, EVER, talk about the number “seven” or even cheer for it on the come out roll. It is a word that quite simply is not said or talked about. If craps players could read minds, it’s also something that is never even thought about. That’s why it is referred to as “big red” or “red” by anyone who wishes to play it as a proposition bet. Keep your hands out of the pit when the stickman is ready to push the dice to the shooter. Dealers are often heard to admonish players with the warning “hands high.” If the dice happen to hit your hand and seven out, you’ll probably wish you were never born. Don’t toss in chips and call instructions to the dealer haphazardly. The dealers take instructions from players in order. They have plenty to do, calculate, and think about. You’ll get your timing down once you become familiar with things. The dealers will let you know if you speak out of turn. Many experienced dealers will even anticipate your moves once they pick up on your playing method. Learn the proper method for tossing in chips. If you throw them wrong, they’ll roll all over the layout and create havoc for the stickman and dealers. Hold the chip(s) by the sides between your thumb and index finger and “spin” them Frisbee style onto the layout. They won’t roll and in many cases the stickman will catch them in midair and set your wager. Don’t be a table hog. There should be

N W I .CO M /G O

room for seven or eight players on each half of the table. If you’re spread out all over the place with elbows resting in the rails on either side of you, you are being inconsiderate to others who may want to join the game. Finally, don’t be afraid to tip courteous and helpful dealers, especially when things are going well. There are many ways to tip craps dealers: Proposition bets, place bets, pass bets with odds, etc. If you want to make a dollar bet on the hard eight for both you and the dealers, just toss in the chips and announce to the stickman a “2-way on the hard eight.” He’ll know to position your chip in the appropriate place and place the dollar dealer chip in the center. You can make a line bet for the dealers yourself (if you lay odds for them they gleefully announce “dealers have shoes”), or even a place bet by announcing your intentions to the dealer. Dealers always love to be “in the game.” Learning how to play the game of craps is only half the battle. Recognizing proper table etiquette will make you fit in just like an experienced pro!

reddy’s Steak House has been a Northwest Indiana culinary mainstay for the last five decades. The restaurant, owned for the last nine years by Jim and Tammy Kamradt, originally opened in 1962. Freddy’s menu, from the beginning, starred quality steaks, ribs, chops, seafood and more. With it’s supper-club like feel, the restaurant has long attracted food fans from not only Northwest Indiana but Chicago and its suburbs

and other locales. Walking into Freddy’s, these days, guests still find that old-fashioned club atmosphere with friendly servers and ample food portions. “We want to continue getting back to our roots and giving people what they really love and want,” said Valerie Martinelli, general manager of Freddy’s. “We’re also trying to bring more specials (to customers) but also keeping our core menu the same.” Martinelli said Freddy’s has long

been a place where people knew they could always get “a good oldfashioned steak.” Freddy’s chef Martin Gomez, who’s presided over the kitchen for the last three years, called Freddy’s a Hammond “landmark” with a staple menu he never wants to change completely but always “perfect.” “We’re keeping (the quality) of steaks and other items that have been here for the past 50 years but also giving people a variety of new things,” he said. “We want to give people a good wholesome meal and more than what they pay for.” Chef Gomez said he regularly tries out new specials. Among popular items at the eatery are the signature Bone-In Ribeye ($38.95) and Freddy’s Famous Poor Boy Steak Sandwich ($10.95 for half portion and $14.95 for full portion). During a recent Wednesday dinner at Freddy’s, we ordered the poor boy steak sandwich as well as the Chopped Steak ($14.95). The poor boy, which was the half portion, was a good size and was served on garlic bread. The meat proved tender and was well-seasoned. The Chopped Steak

entree also received high marks at our table for its juiciness and flavor. The chopped steak was topped with a large amount of grilled onions and also served with a baked potato. Entrees at Freddy’s are served with a relish tray, tossed salad, soup and homemade bread. Fresh steamed vegetable of the day or fresh grilled vegetables are extra. Among other menu items guests will find at Freddy’s are Baby Back Ribs ($15.95 for a half slab and $22.95 for a full slab); Porterhouse steak ($29.95); Filet Medallions ($23.95); Fettuccine Alfredo ($17.95 for chicken, $19.95 for shrimp); Frog Legs ($18.95); Grilled Honey Mustard Salmon ($16.95) and Fresh Lake Perch ($22.95 for deep fried and $24.95 for sauteed in garlic butter). Guests longing for a retro-style dinner experience will surely find it at Freddy’s. FYI: Freddy’s Steak House is located at 6442 Kennedy Ave., Hammond. Hours are 11am-9:30pm Mondays through Thursdays; 11am10:30pm Fridays; 4:30-10:30pm Saturdays and 3-8pm Sundays. Call 219.844.1500 or visit freddyssteakhousehammond.com.
