Musical funny man visits Valpo FYI: Dave Rudolf will perform at 8pm May 9 at Front Porch Music, 505 E. Lincolnway, Valparaiso. Tickets are $12. Call 219. 464.4700 or visit FRONT PORCH MUSIC.COM

N
early three decades ago, Frank Zappa released an album titled “Does Humor Belong in Music.” To Region-based songsmith and musician Dave Rudolf, the answer is, unequivocally, yes. “Frank Zappa of all people wrote ‘Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow,’” he said. “I think humor definitely should be in music. It depends on the song. Certain songs demand weight in their lyrics, and certain songs don’t.” Rudolph is scheduled to perform selections from his humorous side May 9 at Valparaiso’s Front Porch Music. The musician was reared in Bradley, Ill. and currently resides in south suburban Park Forest. Bitten by the musical bug at an early age, Rudolf made music his full-time vocation in the mid-’70s. Rudolf has released 17 adult-minded sets and 13 collections geared towards youngsters. His songs have been heard everywhere from the nationally syndicated “Dr. Demento Show” to Fox Sports Net to “Bozo’s Circus,” to name just a few. A hit with college audiences throughout and beyond the Midwest, Rudolf has received 15 “Entertainer of the Year” nominations by the National Association for Campus Activities, and has shared stages with the musically varied likes of Tim McGraw, the Beach Boys and Cheech and Chong. Lyrically, he finds inspiration in everything from current events to happenings in his life to his surroundings. Musically, he described himself as “all over the place;” over the course of his near four-decade career, Rudolf has released holiday-themed albums for yuletide listeners as well as summerminded sets for those who like a little fun with their sun. “I purposely made myself eclectic,” he said. “Much like many of the bands I admire, like the Beatles, they would experiment with all sorts of different kinds of music. There’s the funny comedy albums, then there’s the beach party albums, that are an amalgam of Jimmy Buffett and Marley and Harry Belafonte, and then there’s singer/ songwriter stuff and the rock stuff.”

Rudolf’s most recent set, “Acoustic Live,” was made available earlier this year and is a two-CD set. His next project is titled “All Folked Up” and will find him mixing a myriad of folk music styles and genre’s with humorous lyrics. At Front Porch Music on May 9, Rudolf will be celebrating the release of his most recent funny set and pay tribute to his musical past, as well as music’s past itself. “We’ll have some of my posters from the ‘70s and some early vinyl albums, which we’ll be giving away for free to people who come, just to make it fun,” he said.

umor has long been at the forefront of Billy Gardell’s life. As a kid, the comedian took notice of the classic comics, particularly his idol Jackie Gleason. “I’m a hard core Gleason fan,” said Gardell, during a recent telephone interview. “I was watching Jackie Gleason when I was 10 years old.” Gardell, who’s winning raves as the co-star of the hit CBS-TV series “Mike and Molly,” also starring Melissa McCarthy, looks forward to bringing his unique stand-up show to Region audiences. “I like the Midwest. I grew up in Pittsburgh,” he said, adding it was an extremely working class environment. The comedian performs at 8 p.m. May 17 at Stardust Event Center at Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City. He said his stand-up show is filled with down-to-earth, average Joe material. “I do a pretty blue collar show. I’m a family man and it’s really a working class show,” he said, adding he draws on his own life when crafting his stand-up material. “I just try to make people laugh and forget about their problems for awhile,” he said. “I try to make people laugh by looking at the human condition.” Gardell said he changes his live show every two years or so explaining it’s “a slow process” coming up with new content. “And if I have difficultly coming up with new material, I’ll just have a fight

with my wife,” he said, laughing. In addition to his work on “Mike and Molly,” Gardell said he’s really enjoying the comedy concert dates and has always loved getting up in front of a live audience to share his humor. “I’ll go out about twice a month now and in the summer I’ll do about 10 or 11 dates.” Gardell said it’s not a hectic schedule but one he likes, and he often brings his family along with him. “It’s much easier these days,” he said. His popularity on “Mike and Molly,” he said, allows him to experience having “a big stand-up career” as well. Gardell is the father of an 11-yearold son who’s now providing him with much material for his show. He and his wife just experienced the phase where his son “doesn’t like giving you hugs in front of other people.” The comedian is sure his child’s teen years will bring about many more subjects to talk about. “We hope we’ve treated him good enough so he’ll treat us good in his teen years,” he said. While Gardell said his son “has a little gift for performing,” he’s expressing more of an interest in being a chef these days. When enjoying the work of other current entertainers, Gardell admires comedians Bill Burr and Nick Griffin. He’s also a fan of actors Daniel Craig and Christian Bale. Besides “Great One” Jackie Gleason,
Gardell said he’s long respected the humor and work of ‘80s comics such as John Candy, John Belushi and others. “I think the ‘80s was the greatest decade for stand-up,” Gardell said. About the success of “Mike and Molly” and why audiences are so fond of it, Gardell said “I think people resonate with our show because there’s a lot of heart. We’re the only sitcom on TV that allows for a tender moment. And we look like real people.” The characters on the show he said may be a “dysfunctional mess” but they are loveable and speak to the everyday masses. “It’s been an amazing journey,” he
said, about being on the show. “I work with an amazing group of people. I couldn’t have drawn it up any better on paper.” Gardell said he’d gladly work on the sitcom for as long as he’d be asked to do it. Among upcoming projects for Gardell is the new movie “Dancer and the Dame.” “It’s geared to people 12 and up. It’s about me and a dog and we’re solving a crime,” he said. The film, by Pure Flix studios, started filming in April. FYI: Billy Gardell performs at 8 p.m. May 17 at Stardust Event Center at Blue Chip Casino, 777 Blue Chip Drive, Michigan City. Tickets are $35, $45 and $60. For tickets, visit ticketmaster.com or purchase in person at The Gift Box in the Blue Chip Casino pavilion. Guests must be 21 or older with a valid state or government-issued photo ID.

ctor Chris Lemmon is happy to continue to make his father proud while carrying on the family trade of entertainment. “I grew up in a household where Hollywood greats like James Cagney and Gregory Peck were family friends and Marilyn Monroe was our neighbor,” said a beaming Lemmon, who continues to savor every memory, while sharing the best stories and moments with fans of Hollywoood’s heyday era. “For anyone who says, ‘But it must have been tough being Jack Lemmon’s son,’ I say, ‘But it was even tougher being Jack Lemmon.’” Chris now has the chance to walk in his father’s famous footsteps, and Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana audiences get to be the first to join him at his side for the journey of a lifetime, in the spotlight and on stage. Producer Hershey Felder, whose string of stage hit successes like “George Gershwin Alone,” “Maestro Bernstein” and last season’s smash hit “Mona Golabek in The Pianist of Willesden Lane” have been boffo box office anchors at Chicago’s Royal George Theatre, is now presenting the World Premiere of Chris Lemmon in “Jack Lemmon Returns.” It’s a new play with music, with Chris starring as his father sharing his life story in this 90-minute one-man-show. The production began previews May 2 and opens on Monday, May 12 at The Royal George Theatre, 1641 North Halsted St. The production is written and directed by Felder and based on the true story of the legendary Jack Lemmon, the man from such iconic films as “Mister Roberts,” “Some Like it Hot,” “Days of Wine and Roses” and “The Odd Couple” and his relationship with his son, actor and musician Chris Lemmon. “When I first saw Chris last year performing an earlier cabaret show that was his stage story of his relationship with his father, I knew this was something I wanted to bring to audiences,

“This remarkable story told by Chris Lemmon in the voice of his father is performed in the style of musical storytelling that Chicago audiences have come to know from me.” Hershey Felder, playwright/director but it had to be presented differently,” said Felder. “Originally, it was Chris telling this story as himself and it wasn’t what worked best, because it came off wrong and in the wrong voice. But Chris telling the story as his father works and the result is something very special and very entertaining.” Like the earlier cabaret show, this stage treatment is based on the biography tribute to his father Chris wrote called “A Twist of Lemmon,” published in 2006 by Algonquin Books and rereleased in 2008 by Applause Theatre and Cinema Books. “This remarkable story told by Chris Lemmon in the voice of his father is performed in the style of musical storytelling that Chicago audiences have come to know from me,” said playwright/director Felder. “Being able to work with Chris to present this piece has been an incredible joy both because of Chris’ skills as an actor in the tradition of his father, and as a musician given that music was such an important part of his father’s life. Having an insider’s view into Hollywood and the craft of one of its prodigal sons makes for an extremely satisfying event.” Chris’ mother is actress Cynthia Stone. Father Jack died in 2001 at age 76. Associate Director Trevor Hay said working with Chris has been a great experience since the actor is always eager to learn and fine tune show

other’s Day is just around the corner. This Sunday will see plenty of carefully prepared breakfasts in bed, handmade cards and flowers. This year, think a bit outside the box for Mother’s Day. Take mom out for a fun family experience!
GIVE HER SOME ONEON-ONE TIME Some ideas gathered from local moms include: a gift certificate for a pedicure with a promise to take her go with her. Tickets to something you know she enjoys – the symphony, the ballet, theater or a concert and plan a date. Families with younger children might want to plan an outing to Lake County Park’s Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center. Their “Mom and Me Manners
Tea” uses real teapots, cups and saucers on a fancy table and includes a fancy hat making session, mint tea and cookies, and story time. Kara Mackey, General Manager of Bellaboo’s, said, “Last year is the first year that we included the ‘Mom and Me Manners Tea’ program in our Gaga for Mama week and it was a huge success!” Bellaboo’s Gaga for Mama week runs all week long, May 5-11, and moms are FREE on Mother’s Day. Visit their website for a full schedule of their Mother’s Week activities: http://www. mybellaboos.com/
TAKE HER ON A TRIP Sandi Blair of Crown Point noted, “Last year for Mother’s Day I took my mom on an overnight getaway. We didn’t go far but it was just the two of us. It was so nice that will be what I do for every year for as long as we can.” Another suggestion for adults and their mothers is to get together with siblings and take
mom out of town for a show and dinner. Whether you get away for a weekend or an afternoon, plan something you know mom wouldn’t plan for herself.
ENJOY THE OUTDOORS Consider visiting our local arboretum Taltree. Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is a 360-acre, dog-friendly oak preserve of formal gardens, woodlands, wetlands and prairies. “Spring is a beautiful time to come to Taltree,” said Anicia Kosky, Communications Director at Taltree Arboretum & Gardens. “Guests can explore a variety of landscapes — formal gardens, woodlands, wetlands and prairies. Our newest garden – the Adventure Garden – features ‘go green’ lifestyle initiatives, animals, an edible flower garden, prairie ABC trail and hidden music garden.” If you’re able to visit Taltree on Mother’s Day weekend you can take advantage of the spring open house on Saturday May 10 or if your mom is a

Moms’ Night Out PG-13 Released May 9
All Allyson and her friends want is a peaceful, grown-up evening of dinner and conversation . . . a long-needed moms’ night out. But in order to enjoy high heels, adult conversation and food not served in a paper bag, they need their husbands to watch the kids for three hours—what could go wrong? Starring Patricia Heaton and Sarah Drew, along with Sean Astin and Trace Adkins, this movie is a comedic look at real life problems. “Every mom and dad in America– whether they have toddlers, tweens or teens–is going to love this movie,” Heaton said. “It’s a hilarious familyfriendly celebration of the trials and triumphs of parenting–a joyous affirmation of the world’s hardest but most important job.”

t seems as if there’s always something exciting happening for poker fans at Horseshoe Casino, proud home of one of the country’s finest dedicated poker rooms. Now through next Monday it’s the 6th than $2.5 million in guarantees and $250,000 in added prizes. The Chicago Poker Classic is an event so spectacular that it is being held inside The Venue, the property’s 90,000 sq. ft. multipurpose showroom and exhibition complex. The tournament, which began on April 29, kicked off with a $350 No-Limit Hold’em Re-Entry $1-million event, followed by a $500 No-Limit Hold’em Re-Entry event with a $500,000 guaranteed prize pool. There is plenty of world-class poker action remaining! Event No. 8, the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event, is the second of the $1-million guarantees. The championship rounds out the series with two starting flights beginning at noon Friday and Saturday. In addition to first prize money (Blake Bohn from Burnsville, MN earned over $288,000 for his victory last year) the winner will be awarded a $10,000 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event seat. This year’s finale features a $1,500 buy-in as opposed to last year’s $3,200. If the Shoe’s WSOP Circuit Main Event held earlier this year is any indicator, the Chicago Poker Classic could be huge. A record field of 1,717 entries was recorded for that one which was won by James Dorrance from Hershey, PA. He earned $418,000.

$250 No-Limit Hold’em Re-Entry with a $250,000 guaranteed prize pool and a brand new 2014 Chrysler 300S waiting for the winner to drive home in. This tournament may have the smallest buy-in, but that quarter of a million dollar guaranteed pool certainly raises the stakes. There will be five starting flights: Two on Saturday at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and three more on Sunday at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. In this event the cash bonus for double qualifiers is $3,500. Just as in the $1-million opener, the double qualifier who surrenders the most chips earns a $10,000 WSOP Main Event seat while the players who surrender the second and third most earn $5,000 cash. Each starting flight pays 10 percent of the field while paying down to four percent. The added incentive of course is that 2014 Chrysler 300S valued at more than $30,000. There is plenty more poker action on tap
in addition to the headliners. Event No. 10 is a one-day event set for Monday, May 12. It’s a $350 No Limit Hold’em Buy-In Mega Deep Stack Turbo Tournament. Three $10,000 WSOP Main Event Seats have been added to the prize package. Visit the Horseshoe this weekend to catch a glimpse of some of the best poker players in the country.
