he annual “Livin’ It Up Benefit for Porter County Special Olympics” has grown considerably since last year and now includes a bike run, bike show, car show, beer garden, food vendors and several music groups performing between noon to 9 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm County Park (the corner of Route 6

and Meridian) on June 14. “It’s going to be a great event,” said John King, host of the “Livin’ It Up” radio program aired Thursdays on Valparaiso’s WVLP-98.3 FM and a member of the Special Sports Boosters board for the county. “This year we have teamed up with Porter County ABATE. We have been working with them the

last three years on with their Ultimate Bike show, in which they were donating the proceeds to Porter County Special Olympics,” continued King. “Their festival was always two weeks before ours. So this year we combined the Livin’ It Up music festival with the Ultimate Bike Festival to take it to another level. The Porter County Parks Department has been such a great supporter of both of

our organizations and has really made it possible to make the festival bigger. ABATE’s Cathy Szymanski is doing an outstanding job of organizing this year’s fest. We have numerous local sponsors which allow us to make this the best festival yet. It is a tremendous feeling for me to see our community rally around such a great cause.” There is a $10 entry fee for the bike show which follows the bike run. There is a $20 entry fee for the car show (includes ticket for the fest), judged by Special Olympic athletes. “I can’t say enough about the outstanding local musicians who are all donating their time to support Special Olympics,” added King. “We have seven top local bands performing this year starting at 2 p.m. with RITO, Upside Down & Backwards at 3 p.m., The Highway Band at 4 p.m., Residence 18 at 5 p.m., Robert Rolfe Feddersen at 6 p.m., Justified at 7 p.m., and Ripley Street closes out the night.” Bringing lawn chairs or blankets for the performances is recommended. “We are all volunteers putting on the fest and with Special Olympics, which mean all funds raised go to our 400-plus athletes in Porter County. Each county must raise their own funds. It costs over $30k per year to make it possible to provide our athletes an opportunity to be involved in something very special that most of us take for granted,” concluded King. Admission: $5 (children 6 and under free). More: Go to Livin’ It Up on Facebook or call (219) 309-0070.

Questions inquiring slot players want to know

I

s it possible for computer programs to control the speed of each reel on a slot machine? Slot and video poker machines have many play characteristics and settings. Among them is the speed at which cards are dealt or the reels spin. On many video poker games, there is a touch screen function that allows guests to select the speed at which they feel comfortable playing. When such a function is unavailable, as it is on most slots, the properties are set internally. Players will encounter traditional spinning reel slots on which decisions are reached faster than others. This characteristic has no impact whatsoever on the payback percentage of the game. The same outcome would occur had the reels spun slower. What faster play does affect, however, is a player’s bankroll. The faster you play, the more money you bet. The more money you wager within a given time frame means your bankroll becomes more vulnerable to the relentless “hold” percentage of the machine. Does using a player’s card affect the performance of a slot machine? Having your player’s club card inserted

in the machine wields no influence on the performance of the game, how much you win or lose, or whether or not you hit a jackpot. The card reader does not communicate with the game itself but rather with a database operated and managed by the property’s marketing division. Statistics on how often you visit, what games you play, how much you typically wager, what denomination you play, and how long you stay are tabulated to create a player profile upon which direct mail offers and communications are based. Using a card can only help you derive more value from your casino outings, especially by earning points for your play that can be redeemed for cash or comps. There is no doubt player’s clubs are self-serving for the casinos, but there is a give-and-take component that makes them beneficial to guests as well. How do you determine the payout for video poker machines? The individual payback percentages of traditional spinning reel and video slots are proprietary information, but video poker machines are a different ball game. The payback percentages of video poker machines are based on a mathematical

formula using information from the game’s pay table, which is in clear public view. The standard way to determine a video poker game’s payback percentage is to make a calculation based on the number of coins paid back for each one wagered for a full house and a flush. For example, a Double-Double Bonus game that pays nine-coins-to-one for a full house and five-coins-to-one for a flush is a “9/5” game that pays 97.87 percent. The best source for finding video poker game payback percentages is videopoker. com. Click “improve your skills” and then click “pay tables” in the box that opens. British theater ensemble ‘Taking Steps’ in Chicago Heights TIM SHELLBERG / TIMES CORRESPONDENT

T

ony Labriola, artistic coordinator at Chicago Heights’ Drama Group, described the difference between British and American farcical comedy as vast as the distance between the two lands. “American farce and American comedy tends to be kind of obvious and crude in some ways,” he said. “Part of the reason why some of the farce works in a different way in Great Britain, I believe, is that they have a lot of politeness and things that they don’t say in their comedy. That allows for the comedy to be achieved more easily. It’s more visual humor, and I would say the Americans’ is more verbal humor.” Drama Group is bringing those two lands together, as the British-based Stables Theatre holds court for a production of the comedy “Taking Steps.” Their production of the acclaimed farce is scheduled to run through June 15. Penned by Alan Ayckbourn, a Tony Award winning playwright whom Labriola compared favorably to Neil Simon, “Steps” chronicles the hijinks surrounding the purchase of a shoddy and possibly haunted house by Roland and the attempts to thwart the purchase by several parties. “Steps” made its debut in London’s West End in 1980 and, a year later, graced Broadway for the first time. “(‘Steps’) is not only a good example of what is typical in British comedy, but it’s one of the few actual complete farces that Ayckbourn has written,” Labriola said. “Ayckbourn has written a lot of comedies, just like Neil Simon has written a lot of comedies. But there’s

only one or two, just like Neil Simon, that represent completely a genre. And this represents the genre of farce.”

Since 1999, Drama Group and the Hastings-based Stables Theatre have participated in an exchange program, which has seen Drama Group cast and

crew cross the pond and grace the Stable Theatre boards, and vice versa, usually on a biennial basis. Two years ago, Drama Group made their way to Hastings for a staging of “Rabbit Hole,” which served as the U.K.’s premiere production of the acclaimed drama. To Labriola, the 15-year relationship between the two theater companies has been artistically beneficial on many levels. “We’ve shared various kinds of technical expertise related to theater,” he said. “We’ve shared organizational expertise. How we do props. How we do costumes. Different varieties of constructions. And of course, we’ve talked about different acting styles.” Nearly a dozen Stables Theatre cast and crew are making their way stateside, with several Drama Group members taking them in for their stay. “When we go there and when they come here, they are our guests,” Labriola said. “We put them up in our homes, we take them places, we feed them, we wine and dine them when we can. We have made long-term relationships that have really been wonderful in terms of sharing everything from theater stories to personal stories.” The Drama Group is scheduled to return to the stage with their production of the musical “Reefer Madness,” slated to open at their Studio Theatre Aug. 1. FYI: “Taking Steps” is presented at 7:30 p.m.

t was four years ago when Patty Bird decided to work with Theatre at the Center in Munster to create a summer opportunity to foster young new talent. “Our first summer, we had about 20 students who participated,” said Bird, education coordinator for the Theatre Summer Workshops program housed at the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road in Munster, which is the anchor for Northwest Indiana’s only professional theater. “This year, we expect more than 100 participants for sensational summer workshops for young theater enthusiasts. The workshops will not only provide professional instruction on acting, singing, choreography and theater, but will help students build their public speaking skills and confidence by using more nontraditional, artistic teaching methods. And by the end of the sessions, we offer free public performances for audiences to enjoy and witness the result of lots of hard work.” The workshops for summer 2014 begin later this month and span through July. Bird emphasizes the training offers more than just stage and artistic experiences. “We are teaching what also translates to life skills,” she said. “From learning how to work as a team to writing and communication abilities, these are qualities that are important for everyday expectations.” Bird described this summer’s offerings: CREATIVE DRAMA: Do you have a little performer at home? The workshop will end by providing the students the opportunity to see their script brought to life on the Theatre at the Center mainstage. ‌The Fault in our Stars

22 Jump Street

Words and Pictures

Hazel and Gus are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, based upon the number-one bestselling novel by John Green, explores the funny, thrilling and tragic business of being alive and in love.

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case — they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

An English teacher (played by Clive Owen) and an art teacher (played by Juliette Binoche) meet at a posh prep school and develop a relationship. Through their unlikely courtship, they battle their own demons in their struggle to connect on a more meaningful level. Their students, with Owen’s encouragement, also get involved in a competition between whether words or pictures are of utmost importance in educational and life settings.

Edge of Tomorrow

‌Maleficent

The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski.

Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain, who, in the original version is miffed by the lack of an invitation to a child’s birth celebration. The classic villain famously puts a hex on the princess to sleep until she is kissed by a handsome prince. But told from the point of view of Maleficent, the new Disney of “Sleeping Beauty,” becomes a more complex story that explores the root causes of her feelings of betrayal and her motive for exacting revenge in this way. Ultimately we learn that Maleficent’s heart turns to stone for a reason and that in turn drives her fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides.

ike and Karen Jesso have been offering creative Italian recipes to dining fans for nearly three decades. As owners of the popular Cafe Borgia in Munster, the husband-andwife team are happy to continue to serve the community and food fans from Northwest Indiana, Illinois and elsewhere. “We opened in Munster in 2007,” said Karen Jesso, adding they long had customers from Northwest Indiana who frequented their previous Cafe Borgia restaurant when it was located

on Torrence Avenue in Lansing. “We want to continue bringing authentic Italian food made to order and at great value to customers,” Jesso said. The Lansing Cafe Borgia debuted in 1986 and attracted many food fans through the years. It was a small eatery and since reservations weren’t taken, diners had to wait awhile for a table and many did. Fans of the cafe ran the gamut from community residents to chefs, area artists, politicians and others. This writer’s first visit to the now closed Lansing eatery was with

Carolyn and Gerry Buster, owners of the famed The Cottage Restaurant, which had been located on Torrence Avenue in Calumet City. (The late Carolyn Buster was considered one of the first well-known chefs in the Chicago area). “Carolyn and Gerry Buster introduced a lot of people to our cafe,” Jesso said. The Munster eatery is a much larger space than the Lansing restaurant as Jesso said the main dining room seats 120 while one of the private rooms seats 40 and the other party room seats 30. Cafe Borgia’s bar area can fit about 20 people. Cafe Borgia’s decor, Jesso’s brainchild, was “a lot of fun” to design, she said. Murals adorn the walls while lights designed by Crete artist Charles Lotton hang from the ceiling. The open kitchen is also a focal point. “Charles Lotton has been a customer since we opened,” Jesso said, adding it’s an honor to have his work displayed in the restaurant. (Lotton’s work is also in the Smithsonian). “We have the largest collection of

his lights (housed in one place) in the world,” she said. According to Jesso, many items in the restaurant come from Italy, including the glass tiles on the walls. During a recent visit to Cafe Borgia for lunch, the eatery was buzzing with a local work crowd enjoying diverse dishes. We were seated in the center of the room close to the open kitchen which also allowed us to enjoy the aromas of the recipes being prepared. We began our meal with stuffed mushrooms ($7), which were filled with crumbled sausage, rice and

Parmesan. The flavor of the stuffing as well as the marinara sauce covering the mushrooms received high marks at our table. Our entrees were Fettuccine Alfredo ($14) and Stuffed Eggplant ($14), both excellent choices. The eggplant was served with a tomato cream sauce and escarole on the side. Chicken was added to the Alfredo dish which made it an even heartier offering. Jesso said husband Mike, whose skills as a chef have been praised through the years, is still the executive chef at Cafe Borgia and has been at the helm of the kitchen since the Lansing days. “He finished third in the nation at McCormick Place (during a major culinary competition) even before there was an ‘Iron Chef,’” she said, about her husband’s expertise in the kitchen.
