The songs of summer ‌Tom Lounges / beatboss@aol.com‌

‌A

s a radio DJ for many years, it is often my job to dictate people’s moods with the music I play and provide a soundtrack to their good times. Last week while cruising around Northwest Indiana with the car windows down, I compiled my Top 10 summer songs other than those Beach Boys songs that just scream — “Summer!” These tunes are perfect for trips to the beach, days in the park, sitting poolside, or firing up the backyard grill. Load these tunes on your MP3 player, grab some sunscreen and go

have some fun in the sun! 1) Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta – “Summer Nights” (1978) Nothing says “summer is here” more than a summer romance and who has not sung along with friends to the “Grease” film soundtrack? 2) Kid Rock – “All Summer Long” (2008) There is something magical in this modern summer classic blending warm weather memories with a musical “mash up” of Lynyrd Skynyrd (“Sweet Home Alabama”) and the late Warren Zevon (“Werewolves of London”). 3) Jan & Dean – “Surf City” (1963) How can a song about a road trip to the beach not make the Top 5 when

M&R RUSH will perform a free 7pm concert on Saturday for all ages at GOODFELLAS, 11200 West 129th Avenue in Cedar Lake. THE RIVIERAS featured members from South Bend and Michigan City and brought the West Coast Beach Sound of the Sixties to Northwest Indiana in 1964 with their No. 5 Billboard chart hit, “California Sun.”

it promises – surf, sand and sun, and “two girls for every boy”? Lyrics tell of teens “either out surfin’ or they’ve got a party brewin’.” 4) The Lovin’ Spoonful – “Summer In The City” (1966) Harsh lyrics about sidewalks “hotter than a match head” may not evoke pleasant thoughts, but they soon change focus to more summer nights where “cool cats go lookin’ for a kitty” for dancing and rooftop romancing. 5) Herman Ze German — “Wipe Out” (2011) The Surfaris original version from 1963 of this instrumental drum-driven tune is great, but this cover by former Scorpions’ drum Herman Rarebell with his Herman Ze German band is amped up with double kick drum for a powerful delivery. Another fun version of “Wipe Out” is the 1986 rap ‘n’ surf mash up by The Fat Boys and The Beach Boys. 6) Mungo Jerry – “In the Summertime” (1970) One of the best selling singles of all time (6 million copies sold), this 1970 tune by British band Mungo Jerry remains a perennial summer favorite. It became a hit again in 2005 when featured on the “Wedding Crashers” film soundtrack, and again when used in the

2013 hit film, “Despicable Me 2.” 7) The Rivieras – “California Sun” (1964) The Ramones did a great remake in 1977, but Hoosier rockers The Rivieras took this tune to No. 5 and only stalled there because The Beatles kick-started The British Invasion that same week when “I Want To Hold Your Hand” hit No. 1. The Rivieras’ members were from South Bend and Michigan City. They brought the West Coast sound of the Sixties to the Midwest in a big way. 8) Sly & The Family Stone – “Hot Fun In the Summertime” (1969) This mellow, funky and soulful celebration of summer features members of the group offering up what they love most about summer. This tune reminds me of when in the mid- 1970s, Sly’s tour bus pulled into the Miner-Dunn parking lot in Highland when I was a bus boy. They wanted coffee and directions to I-94. The best part was the $5 tip they tossed at me. 9) Chicago – “Saturday In the Park” (1972) Visions of Grant Park filled with a cool breeze off Lake Michigan come to mind with this brassy song about “a guy selling ice cream,” people laughing and celebrating summer. Maybe not a Top 10 summer contender outside of

Chicagoland, but it’s a hometown summer classic for sure. 10) Don Henley – “Boys of Summer” (1985) Remember those sweet summer fling romances celebrated in the No. 1 song on this list? This Grammy Awardwinning tune is about a guy waiting to rekindle things with an ex-love who left to enjoy a summer dalliance or two.

Belmont Stakes puts ‘horsepower’ in gambling spotlight again

T

‌JOHN G. BROKOPP / JBROKOPP1@GMAIL.COM‌

he Belmont Stakes puts thoroughbred horse racing in the gambling spotlight once again this Saturday when California Chrome bids to become the first 3-year-old since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown. The honor rolls of World Series, Super Bowl and Stanley Cup winners through the years all boast teams of varying championship qualities. There’s little doubt some were better than others. Some stand out as dynasties, others gather dust on the shelves of time. It’s inevitable when there has to be a winner. There doesn’t have to be a Triple Crown thoroughbred champion, yet the opportunity exists to have a winner every year. The events that comprise the Triple Crown are held annually. Individually they are difficult to win; collectively they represent nearly insurmountable challenges. Tens of thousands of thoroughbreds are foaled every year, but only an elite 11 have ever won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes: Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), and Affirmed (1978). There were no Triple Crown champions in the 50s and 60s; none in the 80s and 90s or the first decade of the new millennium. There was

a 25-year gap between Citation and Secretariat. It has been 36 years since the last Triple Crown winner, the longest drought in the long history of the competition. Triple Crown champions are in a class by themselves. Every thoroughbred has only one chance to join the exclusive club. The Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont are restricted to 3-year-olds. When you get right down to it, thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown just may be the most elite mantel of greatness in all of sports. The three Triple Crown stakes are held at three different race tracks in three different states at three different distances during a span of six weeks. The track configurations and running surfaces are different in every instance, plus there’s this little complication:

Many of the thoroughbreds who compete in the Triple Crown races are barely three years of age by the calendar. Since race horses celebrate a universal birthday on January 1, horses foaled in April turn a year old the following January, yet in reality they are only eight months old. The third and final jewel of the Triple Crown is held at Belmont Park in New York City, three weeks after the Preakness. The race is called “The Test of the Champion” and rightfully so. It’s a demanding 1 and 1/2 miles, in many cases the first and only time the horses will ever be asked to run that far. When you take into account the media hoopla that surrounds the Triple Crown events, the hordes of people who pack the stands, the noise, and all the hype, it’s a miracle any horse has been able to overcome the obstacles that stand in his way on the road to racing greatness! We’ll find out on Saturday if California Chrome will join the most exclusive club in all of sports.

love story for the ages, “Romeo and Juliet” is one of the world’s best-known plays. Thousands of performances are undertaken each year by theater companies around the world. But the Gary Shakespeare Company has a unique take on it. “It is not just a love story, it’s a tragedy, so our production focuses on the consequences of the senseless feud

between the families,” said director Morgan McCabe. McCabe has a long history in the arts, with multiple degrees and experience in theater, as well as work experience with many companies and groups near and far. She said Gary provides a unique opportunity for a theater company to tell these classic tales. “Personally, I love the element of surprise about our endeavor; people

weren’t expecting a Shakespeare company in Gary,” she said. “And they are pleased, delighted and interested in being part of the work, as actors, audience and supporters.” In addition, the company uses the talents of many local actors as well as artists and those interested in theater. “Several actors live and work in the Miller area and just happened to see our audition notice in the window, and stopped in to read for us,” McCabe said. “One of our youngest actors is the 12 year old brother of the actor playing Romeo [Curtis Lewis]. So there is a very strong sense of community.” During the production period of “Romeo and Juliet,” the company has also been working to restore their new performance space. “Not only have they all spent many hours in rehearsal, they have volunteered to hammer, drill, paint, build props and costumes. And keptaus

from fainting with hunger with homemade casseroles, chicken and crab cakes!” McCabe said. “We have the privilege of working with several actors already recognized in the Region for their talents. We are striving to work as an ensemble so everyone’s talents come into play.” This all-hands-on-deck approach has created a very exciting performance for audiences. “Because our space is so small this is up close and personal theatre. Sword play (extremely well choreographed by R&D Choreography of Chicago) is inches away,” McCabe said. All those involved with the Gary Shakespeare Company are looking forward to sharing their upcoming performances with their audiences. “Young and old, familiar with Shakespeare or not — we look forward to spending time with many people from the area as we share our work,” said McCabe.

The architecturally dynamic structure houses both an engaging, 500-seat courtyard theater and a 200-seat black box theater.

“Godspell,” which originally opened on the New York stage in May 1971, was revived on Broadway in 2011 and is now playing as a fresh, new run at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire until Aug. 10.

rehearsals for the stage space’s next production of “Godspell,” which features him playing the lead as Jesus. In “Cats,” he was cast as Skimbleshanks, the Railway Cat, who bemused audiences by buzzing around the stage in clowning attire while

riding a scooter. “It was a lot to keep up with doing both at the same time,” Bohr explained last week during a break in rehearsal. “During the two-week overlap, I had to make sure I didn’t step on stage in my mindset of being Jesus and while rehearsing in ‘Godspell,’ I had to remember not to act like a cat.” As a young, hard-working actor from Wheaton, Ill. who is blessed with staying consistently busy with stage projects, Bohr said it wasn’t unusual to be juggling “dual duties.” “What was different for me this time is I’ve never had two productions

going at the same time when I was learning roles and both of the roles are such principal characters,” he said. This new Chicagoland premiere of the Broadway revival of “Godspell,” started audience previews this week and opens June 11 to run through Aug. 10. “Godspell” was originally conceived and directed by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the composer of “Wicked” and “Pippin.” The production is directed and choreographed by Matt Raftery, who originally hails from Park Forest, Ill. and promises this stage story delivers a fresh, organic, intimate production, literally “illustrating” the parables of the New Testament and bringing its lessons to life on the Marriott stage. The musical also features the recent Broadway arrangements and orchestrations delivered under the musical direction of Ryan T. Nelson. “My idea for this staging has the cast treating the performance space like a giant canvas to bring these life lessons alive to the audience with imagination and music,” Raftery said. The musical highlights song hits like “Day By Day,” “Light of The World,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side.” For Bohr, he said his favorite

numbers are “All Good Gifts” and “Oh Bless the Lord.” “My favorite moment in the show is when I know that all of the people are ready to follow the lead of Jesus,” he said. “It’s a very special turning point.” Bohr is also excited about the set design created by Tom Ryan, which he said includes a large focal point tree and grass on stage. Raftery said once the cast gathered for the first of the rehearsals, he included all of the actors and actresses as part of the process for creating what he describes as the art landscape of the scenic design. “We gave the cast paint and brushes and let them design what colors and messages surround them and the audience for this production,” Raftery said. “It also served as an important bonding activity for the cast.” In addition to Bohr, “Godspell” also stars Devin DeSantis as Judas/ John the Baptist, along with Lillie Cummings, Elizabeth Lanza, Nate Lewellyn, Christine Mild, Eliza Palasz, Samantha Pauly, Zachary Piser and Tom Vendafreddo. The rest of the “Godspell” production team is led by the Marriott Theatre’s Lead Artistic Director Aaron Thielen, with costume coordination by Erin Wuorenma, lighting design by Jesse Klug, sound design by Bob Gilmartin and properties by Sally Weiss. The Marriott Theatre Orchestra is conducted by Musical Supervisor Patti Garwood. “There’s a lot of scenic symbolism that surrounds the characters, all set in an outdoor space with both wooden and chain link fences,” Bohr explained. The visual platform combined with the musical journey of the scenes both inspire and energize the audience, Raftery said. When it first opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, it was hailed as a spiritual, contemporary masterpiece, which was the same critical response the 2011 revival received when it played on Broadway from Oct. 13, 2011, to June 24, 2012. Structured as a musical woven through a series of parables, mostly based on the Gospel of Matthew, as well as the Gospel of Luke, it uses modern music and lyrics to contrast traditional hymns to

Hazel and Gus are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, based upon the numberone bestselling novel by John Green, explores the funny, thrilling and tragic business of being alive and in love. Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) is 16 years old. She alternately loves and tolerates her sometimes over-doting parents. Hazel has developed a crush on a young man, Gus Waters (Ansel Elgort), who seems equally smitten with her. As they grow closer, Hazel and Gus share their fears that accompany their health issues, as well as their love of books, including Hazel’s touchstone, An Imperial Affliction. She has tried many times to get in touch with the book’s reclusive author Peter Van Houten (Willem Dafoe), to no avail. When Gus manages to reach Van Houten through the author’s assistant, it results, astonishingly, in an invitation to meet the writer in Amsterdam. Gus is determined to take Hazel on a journey that will answer every question she has ever had about the book that has meant so much to her.

EDGE OF TOMORROW

‌MALEFICENT

The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski.

Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain, who, in the original version is miffed by the lack of an invitation to a child’s birth celebration. The classic villain famously puts a hex on the princess to sleep until she is kissed by a handsome prince. But told from the point of view of Maleficent, the new Disney of “Sleeping Beauty,” becomes a more complex story that explores the root causes of her feelings of betrayal and her motive for exacting revenge in this way. Ultimately we learn that Maleficent’s heart turns to stone for a reason and that in turn drives her fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides.

Pictures and Legendary Pictures unleash the epic action adventure “Godzilla.” From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (“Monsters”) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless.

But in order to enjoy high heels, adult conversation and food not served in a paper bag, they need their husbands to watch the kids for three hours— what could go wrong? Starring Patricia Heaton and Sarah Drew, along with Sean Astin and Trace Adkins, this movie is a comedic look at real life problems.

Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne lead the cast of Neighbors, a comedy about a young couple suffering from arrested development who are forced to live next to a fraternity house after the birth of their newborn baby.

Brick Mansions

The Other Woman

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important conflict has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he.

In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned homes from better times house the city’s most dangerous criminals. These are the grim, apocalyptic housing projects known as Brick Mansions. In Brick Mansions, only the strong survive. In this dog-eat-dog society, the ruthless, urbane, and deadly drug kingpin Tremaine, played by RZA, is at the top of the foodchain. Undercover cop Damien Collier, played by Paul Walker, is determined to bring Tremaine to justice for killing his father years prior.

After discovering her boyfriend is married, a woman (Cameron Diaz) tries to get her ruined life back on track. But when she accidentally meets the wife he’s been cheating on (Leslie Mann), she realizes they have much in common, and her sworn enemy becomes her greatest friend. The restaurant, established eight months ago, is owned by Toula and Ted Klideris while sons Pete and Vasily also help operate the eatery and other restaurants the family owns. In the Klideris’ family of restaurants is Theo’s in Highland and Ted’s Family Restaurant in Calumet City, Ill. People in the area who would like to have a steak can come to Crown Point. Why should they have to go to Chicago?” said Toula Klideris. Klideris said husband Ted and son Pete are the executive chefs for all their restaurants and recipes are inspired by favorite family recipes. Among popular items at Prime, Klideris said, are the 26-ounce Bone-In Ribeye, Alaskan Red Salmon and Surf and Turf. Cement walls are featured as well as an attractive tin ceiling. Prime Upstairs

After looking at the menu, we decided on the 12-ounce Ribeye ($18.95); 12-ounce NY Strip Steak ($17.95) and the 10-ounce Pork

Chop ($13.95). The steaks were juicy and flavorful while the Iowa pork chop proved tender and grilled to perfection. A baked potato and

asparagus accompanied the ribeye while Vesuvio potatoes were served with the strip steak and sauteed spinach was chosen for the pork chop. All entrees are served with salad and two sides. (Steaks, chops and other items ordered for dinner cost slightly more). Among other menu items starring at Prime for lunch are Oysters Rockefeller ($12.95); Chopped Salad ($9.95); Corned Beef Panini ($9.95); Tuna Salad Croissant ($8.95); Chicken Marsala ($16.95); Lobster Ravioli ($19.95); Shrimp DeJonghe ($16.95) and Scallops ($18.95). About the meat served at Prime, Klideris said, “We age our steaks for 20 days and butcher our own steaks.” She said they’ve long taken

care to serve quality steaks and other foods through the years at Theo’s as well. “We’ve been in the restaurant business for 40 years,” she said, adding the culinary field is a tradition with the family. With Prime, Klideris said, “We want people to feel at home and to feel like they’re part of our family. We want them to relax and enjoy a wonderful evening.” FYI: Prime Steakhouse is located at 109 W. Joliet St., Crown Point (It’s right across the street from the Courthouse).
