ummer has officially arrived in Northwest Indiana now that Hammond’s 11th annual Festival of the Lakes has kicked off at Wolf Lake Memorial Park (2338 Calumet Avenue). The five-day summer celebration which began last night and ends July 20 includes all the carnival rides, midway foods and game booths one would expect to find – only the real focus is on the top name entertainment. Gary, Indiana’s own Kinsey Report struck the opening chord last night while sharing the stage with reggae music icon Jimmy Cliff. Tonight features regional country favorites The Jimmy Sarr Band opening for Big & Rich (featuring Cowboy Troy). John Rich and Big Kenny shot to nearly instant fame years ago thanks in no small part to their monster party hit – “Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)” – that became a staple song in set lists of night clubbing country cover bands around the world. The zany musical duo are back with a new single, “Look At You,” from their fifth studio album titled “Gravity” released via their own imprint, Big & Rich Records.

You do everything you can as an artist and just keep doing what you’re doing.” Rounding out the weekend musical fare at Wolf Lake Pavilion is a double-punch of regional rock faves History’s End and The Craw Puppies, who open for national groups Sublime with Rome on Friday. It’s a cavalcade of stars as touring mini-music fest “The Under the Sun” rolls in to Hammond Saturday featuring a trio of national headliners — Sugar Ray, Blues Traveler, and Uncle Cracker. Closing out Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.’s 2014 parade of music stars on Sunday will be the Latin sounds of Los Jefes Del Rancho and Banda Los Recoditos. All Festival of The Lakes concerts start at 7pm. Although a $25 per car parking fee is charged, admission to the festival itself and all the entertainment is free. More: (219) 853-6378 or southshorecva.com/events/ festival-of-the-lakes Another annual event that brings top stars to the region is Porter County Fair (today through July 26) where the Grandstand for the first few days hosts a huge stage and plenty of great music. All Porter County Grandstand concerts begin at 7:30pm. This year’s musical fare begins with a headline performance by country music star Jake Owen (“The One That Got Away”, “Anywhere With You”, “Alone With You”, etc.) on Friday with an opening set by the rising country quartet, Parmalee (ticket range: $20$50). Saturday’s concert is by multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning contemporary Christian group Casting Crowns (ticket range: $20-$35). Then wrapping up the Grandstand series Sunday is fast-rising singer/songwriter Thomas Rhett (son of 1990s country hit-maker Rhett Atkins) whose sound is country, but with

oss Music Theatre’s production of “Spamalot” is a bittersweet affair for the region-based theater company. Opening Friday and running through July 26 at the Reinhart Auditorium in Merrillville, “Spamalot” marks Ross’ 51st summer musical production in 50 years. It also marks their first summer show without Ross founder and longtime guiding light Jerauld J. Reinhart, who died in February. “We’re carrying on something that he loved, something that he started,” said Mike Reinhart, “Spamalot” director and Jerauld J. Reinhart’s son. “It’s always going to be hard that first year without the founder.” Adapted from the beloved 1975 comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and co-penned for the stage by Python alum Eric Idle, “Spamalot” is a musical spin on the Court of Camelot. Featuring classic Python songs such as “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” and “The Fish-Slapping Dance” alongside numbers penned for the play including “The Song that Goes like This” and “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway,” “Spamalot” made its stage debut in Chicago in 2004 and was a Tony Award-winning smash on the Great White Way when it opened a year later. To bring “Spamalot” to the stage, Reinhart put together a cast and crew of nearly 100 participants. Ross Theatre first brought “Spamalot” to the boards in January, but Mother Nature intervened. “We had a snowstorm on our dress rehearsal week and then we got that

subzero weather, and no one wants to come out for that,” Reinhart said. “We had some people come out, but not that many, and a lot of people asked if we could do it in the summer, because they wanted to see it. “It was also, for my dad, one of the last shows that he wanted to do,” Reinhart added. “He did help cast this show, because a lot of the cast (from the January production) is back in this show.” On July 26, Ross Music Theatre will pay tribute to Reinhart with a screening of “The Musical Man.” A near-hour long documentary which chronicles the lives of the senior Reinhart and

his wife, Margilee Reinhart and their artistic contributions to the region, the film was created by Bryan Reinhart, an Arizona-based filmmaker and another son to Jerauld. The Merrillville High School choral department, choir alumnus and Ross Music Theatre are also scheduled to perform at the tribute to perform selections from some of the senior Reinhart’s favorite musicals and choral pieces. “I hope that by coming to see (the tribute, attendees) will see his life’s work and what he worked so hard to accomplish,” Reinhart said. “I hope that they’ll want to become part of

(the theater community), whether it be part of the audience or a member, something to keep his legacy alive.” All of the proceeds from Ross Music Theatre’s production of “Spamalot” will go to Merrillville High School’s Jerauld J. Reinhart Scholarship Fund. “Spamalot” runs 7:30 p.m. July 18-19 and 3 p.m. July 20 and 26 at Reinhart Auditorium, Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Pl. Merrillville. Cost is $9-$14. Call (219) 577-5953 or visit m-mproductions.com. Also, the Tribute to Jerauld J. Reinhart runs 1 p.m. July 26 at Reinhart Auditorium, Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Pl. Merrillville. Cost is free.

Stage storybooks CST’s ‘Seussical’ brings favorite Dr. Seuss characters to Navy Pier for summer fun ‌PHILIP POTEMPA / PHILIP.POTEMPA@NWI.COM, (219) 852-4327‌

ctor George Andrew Wolff, along with so many reading generations, realized long ago that the stories and characters dreamedup by Dr. Seuss share very important lessons wrapped in whimsical illustrations and whirlwind rhymes. “All of the Dr. Seuss stories are so clever, but they also have such important themes, when you really start to think about them,” said Wolff, who is cast as Horton the Elephant from the 1954 classic tale “Horton Hears a Who!” for the Chicago Shakespeare Theater summer family stage run of “Seussical,” running until Aug. 17 at Navy Pier. Filled with both the humor and silly fun of Dr. Seuss, served up with plots to ponder and songs to smile about, the popular Broadway musical brings to life the colorful world of Dr. Seuss, as imagined by the Tony Awardwinning team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, whose works include “Ragtime,” “Once on This Island” and the current Broadway production of “Rocky, The Musical.” Eric Idle of Monty Python and “Spamalot” fame co-conceived the musical, which opened in 2000 on Broadway. This new Chicago summer run, ideal for audiences age 5 and older, is directed by Scott Weinstein with musical direction by Michael Mahler and every performance features special opportunities for audiences to interact with the actors for one-on-one conversations and photo opportunities. partners with the Chicago Children’s Museum to offer hands-on craft activities in the theater lobby. Based on the stories created by children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, who died in 1991 at age 87, “Seussical” is narrated by his bestknown character, The Cat in the Hat, as it intertwines the tales, characters and themes from 14 cherished Dr. Seuss classics in the 75-minute, no intermission performance. In addition to “Horton Hears a Who!,” other featured segments include stories and characters from “The One Feather Tail of Miss Gertrude McFuzz,” and “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!.” This year marks the 110th birthday of the beloved author, whose work has been translated into more than 20 languages to be enjoyed by children worldwide. Alex Goodrich performs the narrator role of The Cat in the Hat and actress Lillian Castillo makes her CST debut as loveable one-feathered Gertrude McFuzz. The additional cast includes Emily Chang, Lisa Estridge, Cory Goodrich, Aaron Holland, Ericka Mac, Liam Quealy, Joseph Sammour, Allison Sill and Krystal Worrell. As for actor Wolff packing his trunk to perform on the Chicago Shakespeare Theater stage for this summer, he’s also been a favorite face of the venue’s previous summer family shows. “I was the royal secretary to his Highness in ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ in 2010,” Wolff said. “And in 2008, I played Augustus Gloop when Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s summer production was

Alex Goodrich as The Cat in the Hat and Emily Chang as Jojo in the Chicago Shakespeare Theater production of “Seussical.”

“This staging doesn’t need a lot of costuming because the stories and all of the other production elements are so through the roof, it’s easy to get the audience excited about these characters,” GEORGE ANDREW WOLFF, Actor ‘Willy Wonka.’ “ Most recently, Wolff was all about whiskers and fur while starring as Gus the Theater Cat in the spring production of “Cats” at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. But unlike the heavy, hiding animal costuming used in “Cats,” Wolff explains “Seussical” asks audience members to use their imagination, with very little make-up and costumes incorporated into the production. “This staging doesn’t need a lot of costuming because the stories and all of the other production elements are so through the roof, it’s easy to get the audience excited about these characters,” he said. “Chicago Shakespeare Theater spares no expense for these summer productions, and yet the tickets are so reasonable for families to be part of the fun.” The artistic team is Tommy Rapley

Chicago Shakespeare Theater continues its annual partnership with the Chicago Children’s Museum, presenting the following series of programs featuring “Seussical” fun opportunities: • CCM staff and volunteers offer free hands-on art activities in the theater’s lobbies for one hour beginning

at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays (prior to the 11 a.m. performance) and for 90 minutes beginning at 12:15 p.m. on Thursdays (between the 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. performances). • Seussical cast members visit CCM’s Great Hall on Kraft Free Family Night for a short program followed by an opportunity for visiting children and families to interact with cast members at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 24. “Even with all of the silly fun and songs, this is an important show with important themes we can all learn from,” Wolff emphasized. “Especially, the theme of bullying, which we are all talking about because of so many stories that make the news. I’m a dad with two kids of my own, so I’m very glad to be part of a production that offers a chance to talk about the lessons the characters share on stage.”

‌Boyhood

2 hrs 44 min | R| Released July 11 “Boyhood” is something different entirely. Filmed over 12 years, for a few days each year, the movie follows one family — two parents, two kids — as they navigate love, marriage, divorce, school, work, pain, pleasure and everything else a family can go through. Yet the story isn’t particularly dramatic — certainly not by the standards of typical Hollywood storytelling. Indeed, its utter simplicity — some might say even banality — is its strength. What happens to this family, and specifically to Mason, the main character, over 12 years? Life. That’s what happens. While everything about “Boyhood” is done with extraordinary care, the master stroke was clearly the casting, 13 years ago, of a little Texas boy named Ellar Coltrane, with a mop of light brown hair and dreamy eyes. The film tells a story of a divorced couple, Mason and Olivia, raising their young son, Mason Jr. The story follows the boy for 12 years, from first grade at age 6 through twelfth grade at age 18, and examines his relationship with his parents as he grows.

THINK LIKE A MAN TOO

‌HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

‌THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

1 hr 45 min | PG | Released June 13

2 hr 5 min | PG-13 | Released June 6

In the ingenious adaptation of comedian and nationally syndicated radio host Steve Harvey’s New York Times best-selling book Act Like A Lady, Think Like a Man, we meet a group whose romantic entanglements with the women they pursued made for plenty of sharp comedy and heartfelt reflection. Leave it to a big wedding in Las Vegas to make the next stage in these couple’s lives fraught confluence of fears, desires and good intentions gone wrong.

In the thrilling second chapter of the epic trilogy, five years have passed since the heroic young Viking Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) befriended an injured dragon and forever changed the way the residents of Berk interact with the fire-breathers. Now, Vikings and dragons live sideby-side in peace on the fantastical isle that has been transformed into a dragon’s paradise. But when grown-up responsibilities loom on the horizon, Hiccup and his faithful dragon Toothless take to the skies in search of answers.

Hazel and Gus are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. The Fault In Our Stars, based upon the number-one bestselling novel by John Green, explores the funny, thrilling and tragic business of being alive and in love.

WORDS AND PICTURES

EDGE OF TOMORROW

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case — they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship.

An English teacher (played by Clive Owen) and an art teacher (played by Juliette Binoche) meet at a posh prep school and develop a relationship. Through their unlikely courtship, they battle their own demons in their struggle to connect on a more meaningful level. Their students, with Owen’s encouragement, also get involved in a competition between whether words or pictures are of utmost importance in educational and life settings.

The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again and again.

Quarter slots stand the test of time ‌JOHN G. BROKOPP/JBORKOPP1@GMAIL.COM‌

‌B

efore the penny slot revolution captured the imagination (not to mention bankrolls) of average recreational gaming enthusiasts, quarter slots were the games of choice for a majority of players. According to statistics released by the Indiana Gaming Commission in its June report, 25-cent slots should still be at the top of their list. Even though quarter games at casinos in Northwest Indiana have done a disappearing act in recent years, players stand to derive a bigger bang for their gambling buck by playing them rather than the pennies. Here’s a casino-by-casino breakdown: Ameristar: Players wagered a total of $100,576,558 on the property’s 1,339 penny games, of which $11,760,275 was retained as casino win. That’s a “hold” of 11.7 percent. Compare that to the $10,464,666 that was wagered on the 122 quarter games. The win of $567,288 yielded a hold of 5.4 percent, less than half of Ameristar’s win percentage on the penny games. Blue Chip: The Michigan City casino’s 948 penny games generated $49,898,255 in play, of which $5,900,344 was held, a percentage of 11.8. On the other hand, $30,043,073 was wagered on 384 25-cent machines for a win of $2,004,209 and a hold of 6.7 percent. Horseshoe: With a huge inventory of 1,651 one-cent machines, it’s no surprise the Hammond casino attracted $114,411,133 worth of play. That produced $14,567,783 in revenue for a 12.7 percent hold, the highest in the NWI market. The Shoe’s 451 quarter games pulled in $33,948,493 from players. The casino’s win on that play amounted to $2,866,247 for a hold of 8.4 percent, once again highest among the five NWI destinations but still 4.3 percent lower than the pennies. Majestic Star I: The 574 penny games produced $32,779,398 in handle, from which the casino derived $4,065,008 in revenue. Factor in a 12.4 percent hold and casino-goers

paid the price collectively for playing them. There are only 68 quarter games on the casino floor. Players wagered $7,521,255 on them, giving the property $381,335 in win. That breaks down to a hold of just 5.1 percent, the most generous of any 25-cent slot inventory in NWI. Majestic Star II: Not much difference here. There are 615 one-cent games in place on the vessel. A total of $4,140,420 in casino win was retained from the total handle of $35,224,114, a hold percentage of 11.7. The 111 quarter games took in $6,912,564 of which all but $499,252 was returned to players, but that still makes for a hold of 7.2 percent. Penny games create the illusion that you’re stretching your gaming bankroll further, but statistics reveal that playing quarter games may be your best choice.
