usic, food, RVs, ATVs and boats — lots of boats. That’s what’s in store for this year’s Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show. The Ludington Daily News will host its second annual show in and around the Ludington Municipal Marina Friday through Sunday, Sept. 8-10 — and it’s expected to be bigger and better than the inaugural event in 2016. “There will be hundreds of boats,” said Daily News Show Operations Administrator Steve Leedham. “We’ll have pontoons, runabouts, aluminum fishing boats and sailboats, and we’re hoping some dealers bring center console fishing boats.” Great Lakes Sailing plans to bring a 35-foot Gemini Legacy catamaran and 31foot Marlow Hunter as well as boating apparel For 2017, the show has even more city streets closed for pedestrian traffic and boat/RV/ATV-viewing — William Street from Filer to Loomis streets, Loomis Street from Robert west to Lewis streets and

(See related stories.) The marina’s concrete landing along Loomis Street will feature a tent for sales of beer and other beverages. The Lakeside Weiner Wagon and Taco 'Bout It, a food truck based out of Kaleva, will offer food during the event. Tacos can be enjoyed all weekend, while the Weiner Wagon will be on hand Friday and Sunday. More food vendors are expected to be added as the event nears. Rockin’ the boat show
By Brooke Kansier Daily News Staff Writer

heryl Wolfram is ready to rock the boats at next month's Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show — literally. The Brethren-based artist will perform from a pontoon boat stage in the water at the Ludington Municipal Marina. "I'm quite excited about it — performing on a pontoon will be a first-time experience," Wolfram said. Wolfram, who has performed throughout the community, at Shagway Arts Barn, local pubs and during shows like Ludrock, Girls Rock and other festivals, first picked up a guitar in third grade. By eighth grade, her instrument of choice was a 12-string guitar.
‘I had always been nervous to perform by myself, and
(Ludrock founder Ed Santarelli) encouraged me.’
Cheryl Wolfram Since then, Wolfram has performed both in bands and as a solo artist, and has released three albums which have earned rave reviews. "Most of the tunes I perform solo are upbeat radio hits," Wolfram said. She has a wide-ranging setlist planned for the show. "I will be starting with older tunes, ’60s and ’70s, then moving into songs from this century as the
afternoon progresses," Wolfram said. She's also played blues rock and rock ‘n' roll. Wolfram has headlined Girls Rock with all-female pop trio Peace Love Music, and earlier this summer reprised a solo performance for Ludrock, which she has performed in for the last four years. “I had always been ner-
vous to perform by myself, and (Ludrock founder Ed Santarelli) encouraged me,” she said. “It made a big difference for me, to be able to perform at Ludrock.” Wolfram also plays electric guitar for Babe Ruthless, an all-girl rock band. She can be found singing at pubs, tasting rooms, farmers markets and oc-
casionally busking on the street. "Ludington has a vibrant, happening music scene," Wolfram said. "I'm grateful to be a part of it." Wolfram performs from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday from a pontoon boat stage at the Ludington Municipal Marina. brooke@ludingtondailynews.com

an Quinn enjoyed being a part of the 2016 Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show in Ludington and he’s excited to be coming back this year. “I’m looking forward to it. We sold a lot of product last year, including pontoons, wave runners, side by sides and dock assemblies,” said Quinn, owner of U-Win Motorsports. “Last year, we just got into boating and since last year we’ve added another line of miniature Paddle King pontoons and paddle boats and floating docks,” he added. “We already have sold a bunch of them.” Quinn said U-Win Motorsports has also hired a new mechanic — who has 18 years of service in the community — during the past year.
The new mechanic is Kevin Freese and Quinn said Freese is certified to work on the Evinrude and Suzuki engines U-Win sells as well as Honda and Mercury engines. “And he can take care of winterizing needs and shrinkwrapping boats,” Quinn said. U-Win Motorsports is located at 2284 W. U.S. 10 and Quinn said it’s been in business now for almost 15 years. The business sells Manitou and Sweetwater pontoon boats and has now added Paddle King boats this year. Quinn said Manitou produces pontoon boats using VToon technology that makes them steer like V-bottom boats. “It’s a performance boat,” he has said. “We can put twin 300 horsepower motors on them and they can go up to 65 mph. At that speed, if you aren’t holding onto your seat, you could go in the water
when you turn.” This year’s Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show, which is sponsored by the Ludington Daily News, is scheduled for Sept. 8 to 10 in and around the Ludington Municipal Marina. The show’s schedule is 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8 and Saturday, Sept. 9 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. Quinn said people visiting his exhibit will have an opportunity to test their casting skills while trying to win a pull-behind tube for a boat. He said contestants will stand on a pontoon boat and cast a lead weight at a fish-shaped mailbox. People who land their weight in the mailbox will then have their names placed in a drawing for the tube.

ndy Usik, general manager of Hall’s Sport Centers, enjoyed the 2016 Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show in Ludington, and he’s excited to return for this year’s show on Sept. 8 through 10. “Last year, we were pleasantly surprised by the traffic,” Usik said, adding the September event came when many boaters are thinking more about putting their boats up for the winter. He believes Hall’s Sport Centers sold two or three boats as a result of the show. “And we felt residual affects throughout the year,” he said, adding that he thinks the company’s presence at the 2016 show accounted for at least five boat sales. “We’re going to devote

been in business for 45 years, with two stores in Muskegon and one each in Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. “My dad, Harold Hall, started it out of his parents’ front yard,” Usik said. He estimated his business delivered more than 10 boats to the greater Ludington area in the last year and is glad for the community support. Usik said he plans to bring in seven or eight pontoon boats from Bennington and Manitou as well as fiberglass runabouts from Four Winns and Glastron. He also plans to bring a Scarab jet boat and a Wellcraft center console boat. “It’s the time of year for model year conversion. dam Lamb, owner of Ludington Yacht Sales, says he can’t imagine another location better for the three-day show than at the waterfront wrapped around the Ludington Municipal Marina. He’s optimistic about the Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show Sept. 8 through 10. “I’m excited to see this great event come to Ludington,” Lamb said. “Ludington is really a popular destination with boaters and having sold well over a hundred boats in and around Ludington the last few years, the town is ready for a show like this — we’re a boating community. “We’re so excited to be involved with the boat show this year,” he added. “I’m going to push the show and tell all of my boat dealer friends
and brokers that this is the show of the fall in West Michigan. I want to help make it something special.” Lamb is bringing an “eclectic array of boats,” ranging in “something for everyone,” he said. “We’ll have boats up to 50 feet in the water and almost another dozen or so on land that will be on trailers,” said Lamb, whose business recently moved to Ludington Avenue. “Pontoons, runabouts and yachts, just like our normal lineup, we aim to bring boats for all budgets.” Ludington is a lake town, Lamb said, and the area needs to take advantage of it with this show. “We have one of the most majestic freshwater lakes in the world in our front yard,” Lamb said. “It’s no secret — boaters spend money, and they typically spend money where they boat. So beyond the beauty of Ludington,
boaters come here because Ludington has so much to offer.” Lamb said the boat show can only help an area already centered on community values. “Everything is in walking distance: great food, great beer and cocktails, great shopping and a welcoming community,” Lamb added. “The dollars that boaters bring to town are vital. I’ve experienced it firsthand — I’ve sold boats to folks from different parts of the state and even out of state who have decided to keep their new boat here. They buy fuel here, they buy a slip here, they store here, they eat here, they shop here, and then their families come here. “It’s just incredible, and I’m so happy to see folks fall in love with our town.” mitch@ludingtondailynews.com (231) 843-1122 x348

Bloomer Cup offers 2 divisions
By COLTON MOKOFSKY The Bloomer Cup is set to take place this year on Sept. 9. With two different divisions, the race offers something for the sailing professional as well as the hobbyist. The spinnaker division is typically for those who do more racing, the more serious sailors, said Bloomer Cup Race Chairman Dale Fitch. Opposite the spinnaker division is the main and jib fleet, which allows for the sailors looking to take part just for the fun of it. The race is named after Bob Bloomer, a brother of Betty Ford, who helped to popularize sailboat racing in the early 1960s. “We’ve put it on for a number of years,” Fitch said. “(Bloomer) lived in this area and taught many people to sail. There are many people my age that knew him. He basically taught them to sail and he did that in Ludington.” Fitch said he hopes the event will draw many participants, especially those who might have not felt comfortable being a part of a Ludington Yacht Club event before. “The yacht club is much more informal, so we welcome anyone to come in there,” he said. “Anyone that’s not a member on this event can have full access to all our facilities.” Free dockage throughout the weekend of the event will also be included for those participating. The weekend events include cocktail hour Friday with the film “Captain Ron” projected on a sail as a “welcoming” event the day before prior to the Saturday race. A steak dinner will be served Saturday night. “We’re going to allow people to grill their own and if they want someone to cook it, we will have someone there to do that,” Fitch said.

Boats & bands Brad Lee brings top-notch songwriting to show stage

inger/songwriter Brad Lee will bring his Grammy-nominated, finger-picking tunes to the Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show. The Ludington transplant has been playing since childhood. “My uncle Paul taught me to play guitar when I was about 9 years old. He would always check my fingers for callouses to make sure I was practicing,” Lee said. “Around the age of 16, I was

introduced to Thom Bresh, the son of Merle Travis, who came up with what is now well-known as ‘Travis-style’ finger-picking. Right then, I knew that was the path for me to follow. It spoke to my soul.” Lee names James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young as influences for his 200-plus songs. Songwriting is his true passion. “I prefer to write and perform my own material because I have learned and played every popular song that has intrigued or interested me, and I have never felt that I could do it better or the same as the original artist has done it,” Lee said. “My music and lyrics are an expression of myself, what I feel and how I look at life.” He’s produced three albums. “A lot of my popularity has also come from international radio play,” Lee said. “I was never looking to be a star — I just wanted to write good songs for the people who wanted to record them.” He will perform from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the show.

Two Dudes in Flip Flops to bring trop-rock tunes By Brooke Kansier Daily News staff writer
I
f laid-back, tropical tunes are more your style, then Loomis Street is the place to be during the second annual Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show, slated for Sept. 8-10 at the Ludington Municipal Marina. Two Dudes in Flip Flops is a local favorite based in Muskegon, known for its “troprock”-style guitar, steel pan and tight vocal harmonies that bring a distinct island feel. They’ll play from the back of a toy-hauler at Loomis Street near the Fun-NSun RV display. The two dudes — brothers Greg and Jeff Grossenbacher — began playing with a bluegrass band, the Cedar Shack Gang, later forming Jimmy Buffett-style party band Sons-of-Beaches.
Eventually, Greg joined Jeff at his Thursday night Island Breeze steel pan show, and the Two Dudes in Flip Flops were born. Now, the duo plays up and down the west Michigan shoreline through the summer. Greg, of Coopersville, is an avid boater who is also known for his solo performances. Jeff, who resides in Muskegon, is an expert of all things steel pan. The duo is known locally for performances at sunset beach bonfires, the Buccaneer Bash and other Pyratehosted events. The band also headlined last year’s Love Ludington events.

The company currently has two locations that offer full service. “We have two pro shops — fully stocked pro shops. One Grand Rapids store in Coopersville and the Richland store for southeast operating.” Krutel said the company is excited to be showing product for the first time in the Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show,
‘We’ve got a couple new lines that I think are going to be a tremendous success.’ Brian Krutel sponsored by the Ludington Daily News, at the Ludington Municipal Marina Sept. 8 through 10. “I am most excited about introducing your market place in West Michigan,” Krutel said. “We’ve got a couple new lines that I think are going to be a tremendous success.” Among the recent additions is a new boat model that allows surfers to ride the wakes it creates. “A new Centurion and also Supreme. Those are considered a tow boat,” Krutel said. “They are designed to put out the massive wakes for people to surf behind.” Don’t know how to surf?
Gull Lake Marine will be offering instructive camps during the summer months. The company will also bring a well-recognized brand for show-goers to check out. “Obviously we will be bringing some Boston Whalers. They are a center console boat as well, but also one of the most recognized brands of center console boats,” Krutel said. And what’s a day on the lake without a cool beverage? Gull Lake Marine will also bring many Yeti coolers and cups for purchase during the show. colton@ludingtondailynews.com

oint North RV of Ludington will be a firsttimer to the Western Michigan Boat, RV, Outdoor and Home Show the Ludington Daily News is sponsoring in and around the Ludington Municipal Marina Sept. 8 through 10. The new company is ready to show off what it’s all about. “We’ve just recently opened so it’s going to be our first time down there (at the show),” said Point North RV staff member Matt Priemer. “We’ve seen (the show) down there before and we thought that it would be good opportunity to let people know we are here.”
‘The recession has eased up a bit and people can now
afford to go outdoors in these good economic times.’ Matt Priemer The business has a large selection of new and used RVs, fifth-wheels, traveltrailers, and toy-haulers. “We’re going to have a couple different campers (at the show),” he said. “Fifthwheels — we have brand new club cars on board and we’re going to have some of those down there.”
In addition to sales, the company also offers mobile RV and golf cart repair, and hopes to offer a full store for parts and accessories in the near future. “Right now, we’re in the process of having our existing building removed, because we are in the process of building a new facility,” he said. “We will have a golf car parts store and have an RV as well as golf car accessories, so wheels, life kits, paints, etc.” Everyone who works for the company already has experience with RVs. “We saw the opportunity for a new game in town. (We thought) we would put our hats in and give it a whirl,” he said. “We’re just working hard to earn everybody’s business.”
