Understanding Hearing Loss What causes hearing loss and how it can affect you. Hearing loss is one of the most common health issue in the world. Nearly one in five Americans age 12 and over experience hearing loss severe enough to interfere with daily communication. 1 There are many reasons for the high volume of cases, with longer-living population high on the list. Called presbycusis, aged-related hearing loss is slow loss of hearing that occurs as people get older. Other causes of hearing loss can be from: Repeated loud noise exposure; ear infections; injuries to the head or ear; birth defects or genetics; and ototoxic reaction to drugs or cancer treatment. While the causes of hearing loss may be varied, there are only two types of hearing loss. Conduction hearing loss is a problem with the outer or middle ear which is often medically or surgically treated. A common example is chronic middles ear infection. Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type, with a problem of the inner ear or hearing nerve. This loss is usually permanent and can usually be rehabilitated with amplification through the use of hearing aids. Many people put off getting help for the hearing loss because they think it’s insignificant or are in denial that their hearing loss is interfering with communication with their loved ones. But research has linked untreated hearing loss to significant issues such as 2: Irritability, negative and anger; Fatigue, tension, stress and depression; Avoidance or withdrawal from social situations; Social rejection and loneliness; Reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety; Impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks; Reduced job performance and earning power; and Diminished psychological and overall health. Are you one of them? Do you: Ask others to repeat themselves? Turn up the television volume to levels others find too loud? Have trouble understanding conversations in noisy places? Having trouble with women’s and children’s voices? Have trouble hearing over the telephone? Have difficulty following a fast-moving conversation?
CONFUSION & HEARING LOSS – There may be a link
Growing evidence indicates that older adults with hearing loss are more likely to experience the symptoms of cognitive decline. A Johns Hopkins Study found that cognitive diminishment was 41% greater in seniors with hearing loss.3 Think of hearing as a partnership between your ears and your brain. When someone speaks, your brain processes the sounds so that you can understand them. That’s called cognitive load. With hearing loss, the speech signals coming in to your brain are degraded, so your brain has to work much harder to process them. When more brain resources are used for understanding sounds, other brain tasks, such as memory and comprehension suffer. What can you do? If you suspect that you may be experiencing the effects of hearing loss, find a local hearing care professional to conduct a comprehensive hearing evaluation. If the results show a conductive component to your hearing loss, the professional should recommend you to a doctor. If the results indicate sensorineural hearing loss, they will discuss the benefits of hearing aids. Hearing aids process sound signals so it’s easier for the brain to understand them. They also reduce the cognitive load, making it easier for your brain to perform other tasks. Benefits of wearing hearing aids may include 4: Reduced mental fatigue; Decreased feelings of isolation and depression; improved ability to do several things at once; improved memory, attention and focus; and improved communication skills. Audiologists recognize a significant benefit of early intervention with hearing aids. When you lose hearing ability over time, your brain can actually “forget” how to hear certain sounds. This is called “Auditory Deprivation.” For example, the longer your brain is deprived of highfrequency sounds, the harder it will be to process those sounds even after being fitted with a hearing aid. The old adage of “Use it or Lose it” is quite appropriate here.

How Gum Disease Affects Your Health You might think brushing gently twice a day, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist regularly make sense for good oral health. But the health of your mouth could affect the health of your whole body. More and more evidence shows a strong association between gum disease and heart disease, stroke, diabetes, poor pregnancy outcomes, and other conditions. Some early research has even found a higher risk for certain cancers. What could the connection be? In some cases, such as heart disease, one theory blames bacteria in the mouth. When these bacteria enter the blood stream, the theory goes, they settle on existing coronary artery plaques and help form clots in the arteries that feed your heart.
Your oral health is more important than you might realize. Oral Health impacts the whole body and problems in the mouth increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, infection and cancer. Maintaining oral health can help protect overall health.
Contact us to improve your dental health. WE WELCOME NEW PATIENTS
Another possibility: The chemical signals given off from the chronic inflammation caused by gum disease bacteria could directly increase atherosclerotic plaque buildup. This could also play a part in such inflammatory conditions as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease, and some forms of cancer. As harmful as periodontal disease can be, men and women should know it can be prevented. Taking good care of your teeth and routinely visiting the dentist for cleanings are great ways to prevent periodontal disease.

Where to seek medical care: Convenient Care clinics provide more options. When to visit your primary care office or head to the nearest emergency department is a decision that seems pretty clear...except when it isn’t. For obvious emergency situations, we typically know to call 911. But, there are plenty of times when we just don’t know the right choice. For example, it’s a weekday evening, you’re just getting home from the office and you dis-

Why is it so difficult to decide what to do? cover that your child has a painful eye that is very pink and oozing. Is it contagious? Should he stay home from school the next day? Should you put drops in? What’s the best choice? Or, let’s say that situation is a Friday evening, and you decide to wait it out. But on Saturday, your child with the pink, inflamed eye wakes up covered in a red, itchy rash as well. Now what should you do? Wait until Monday and call your pediatrician? Take him to the emergency department? Why is it so difficult to decide what to do? The reason it’s difficult to make decisions in situations like what is described above is because the vast majority of us don’t have the information right at our fingertips.

We know that emergency care can be more expensive and sometimes very necessary, but what about non-life threatening situations that can’t wait? To help with exactly these situations, Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital is developing two new Convenient Care clinics—one in Hart and one in Ludington—opening soon to provide extended access to medical care that is nonemergency. The clinics will provide extended weekday and weekend hours, and offer walk-in services with no appointment-needed. Spectrum Health has developed a helpful guide, putting the information at your fingertips so it’s easier to decide what to do and where to go in a situation involving your health. Look at the graphic presented at the right to help you make the best decision about where to go for care.

West Shore Medical Center: Specialized Care in a Special Place The natural beauty that surrounds Manistee, from its sparkling Lake Michigan shoreline to its deep forests, continues to draw people to this picturesque, historic community. Amid the splendid scenery stands another vital part of any successful community – a first rate health care facility. West Shore Medical Center blends the professionalism, skill, and expertise of a large medical facility with the personalized, attentive care people expect in their hometown hospital. West Shore offers a surprising array of services, including the recent addition of the only hyperbaric oxygen chambers between Traverse City and Grand Rapids. West Shore’s Wound and Hyperbaric Services operates two hyperbaric chambers to care for patients with chronic wounds, including diabetic and pressure ulcers, burns, surgical incisions, and trauma wounds. It is just the latest example of the hospital’s commitment to continue investing in the kinds of medical technology that will help patients stay closer to home for their medical care. “Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an exciting treatment option that will benefit many patients in the region,” said West Shore Medical Center CEO James Barker. “These chambers extend West Shore Medical Center’s efforts to provide high quality care to our community.” Specialized care comes in many different forms at West Shore Medical Center. You might not expect to find specialty care, such as urology, in a small community, but patients with kidney stones, prostate issues, or those dealing with incontinency can find the help they need at West Shore Medical Center. Urologist Charles Keoleian, M.D. offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options for male and female patients. He focuses on the urinary tract, the bladder, and kidneys, and the male reproductive system. Painful kidney stones are one of the most common problems associated with the urinary tract. “Here at West Shore, we can treat many patients through a lithotripsy procedure which involves using focused sound waves to break up the stones. This allows them to pass more easily through the urinary tract,” Dr. Keoleian said. “People often think that incontinence comes with aging, and that is just not the case. It typically is something that we need to address and is ultimately fixable.” Today, a growing number of sophisticated procedures take place in West Shore’s Surgical Services department. Procedures are routinely performed in gynecology, orthopedics,

ophthalmology, and general surgery, as well as dental and ear, nose, and throat surgery.
features home-like rooms with queen-size beds and private whirlpool baths.
More than 50 specialists in the Manistee area provide a wide range of care to the community. When a higher level of treatment is needed, West Shore physicians work collaboratively with specialists at Munson Medical Center and other health care facilities. West Shore also has access to pediatric specialty services through its affiliation with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Those kinds of personal touches result in high patient satisfaction throughout the hospital. Nowhere is that more evident than in West Shore Medical Center’s Maternal and Newborn Center, which features comfortable, private rooms with plenty of room for the whole family. The clinical team includes obstetricians/gynecologists, pediatricians, and highly specialized nurses who provide great care for newborns and their mothers. Highly rated for patient satisfaction, West Shore’s women’s services team is the first choice for growing families.
Manistee residents also do not have to leave town to find advanced diagnostic technology. West Shore was the first hospital in northwest Michigan to have a 160-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner, which provides clearer images at lower radiation than the previous technology. West Shore also offers digital mammography with mammatome biopsy around-the-clock, fixed-base magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and mobile positron emission tomography (PET) services. Local state-of-the-art diagnostics mean physicians and providers have faster access to the information they need to make treatment decisions and healing can begin without delay. That’s especially important during the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. West Shore Cancer Services include laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, biopsies, surgery, and chemotherapy. A chemotherapy infusion clinic adjacent to the hospital makes it more convenient for Manistee-area residents to receive care close to home. For additional specialized treatment, including radiation therapy, Manistee physicians work closely with specialists at Munson Medical Center and other medical centers. Because sleep is a vital component of everyone’s good health, West Shore Medical Center offers a Sleep Disorders Center recently accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The accreditation verifies that the hospital program meets or exceeds all standards for professional health care as designated by the academy. Standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assurance. “West Shore Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center is an important resource to the local medical community and provides academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders,” said Timothy Morgenthaler, M.D., president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The Sleep Disorders Center
While no one wants to suffer any lingering effects from illness or injury, sometimes people need ongoing help to fully recover. West Shore’s expert Rehabilitation Services team provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient therapy, including physical, occupational, and speech/language therapies. Care is tailored for each person to help patients return to their every-day activities and improve their quality of life. The Rehab staff also provides personalized aquatic therapy in a specially-designed therapeutic pool. West Shore Medical Center is a countyowned, 45-bed acute care hospital. It has partnered with the Munson Healthcare system since 1998. West Shore Medical Center’s Board of Trustees recently voted to explore strengthening its current relationship with the regional health system. In exploring a closer relationship with Munson Healthcare, the Board is focused on positioning the hospital for a strong and successful future – ensuring the right mix of close-to-home health care services in Manistee and surrounding communities for many years to come. “Many rural community hospitals across America are struggling to survive. Our hospital’s strong clinical quality and sound financial position make this the best time to explore our options from a position of strength,” said West Shore Medical Center CEO James Barker. “This hospital is a valued community resource and our board is committed to taking the steps needed to ensure it remains strong for many years to come. Building on the close relationship and integration we already have just makes sense.” For more information about services available at West Shore Medical Center, call (231) 398-1000 or 1-800-533-5520, or visit westshoremedcenter.org.

Choosing The Right Medical Equipment Provider Proper medical equipment can greatly improve the lives of people living with chronic or severe illness or injury. After obtaining a doctor’s prescription for any equipment recommended for optimal patient health, the next step is to find a local supplier that can provide the best for those needs. It is important to find a company that carries the equipment and supplies that best serve individual requirements, and promises continued ease of service. Continuing health issues can take their toll on resources. The right provider helps to ensure the highest quality of life for their clients.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Customer service is never more important than when dealing with someone’s health and well-being. A good medical equipment provider will assist with any problems concerning equipment or supplies promptly and in a way that lets the client know that their comfort and safety is their number-one priority. A local business serves friends and neighbors, giving them an edge over the nameless/faceless outof-town companies. A local supplier is going to be able to serve needs faster and with a hometown level of care that just cannot be replicated by the big guys.
BILLING AND INSURANCE
It is important that your medical supplier has experience in the complicated world of insurance and billing, including the often-used Medicare and Medicaid. Insurance requirements change yearly and the right business will be on top of the rules and regulations and may even bill insurance directly, doing what it takes to help save their clients time and money.
RESPIRATION SERVICES
Respiration services are an important area of expertise for medical supply providers. It is necessary to work with a business that has a staff trained in the use of CPAP machines, oxygen, supplies and other respiration equipment. They should have certified technicians to educate clients and caregivers on the proper safety procedures for such equipment.
MOBILITY SERVICES
Proper mobility has a huge impact on dayto-day life. It is important to find a business that can provide a wide selection of mobility aids. Whether the need is for a cane, crutches, scooter, walker, wheelchair or other mobility aids, the right level of support is important. The
ability to provide evolving care as needs shift makes establishing a relationship with the right company a big role in easing a client through mobility transitions.
OTHER SERVICES AND SUPPLIES
A provider that creates personal relationships their clients and learns their needs over time helps to ensure the best possible long-term care. Find a company that can provide for all current needs, as well as any future ones that may occur. New needs may become a daily part of life years down the road, so make sure the business is as stocked and knowledgeable in mobility equipment as it is in diabetic, respiratory and ostomy supplies. Finding such a provider may seem like a daunting task, so talk to your doctor and medical staff about local companies that they recommend. A business with an excellent record of customer care will be a great asset when dealing with chronic or severe health issues. Finding the right provider is a big step in building a strong health team, helping clients obtain the long-term goal of optimal and ongoing personal service and comfort.
