Ask AN ExpErt I plANNiNg for rEtirEmENt 5 KEYS TO CONSIDER WHEN INVESTING FOR RETIREMENT As people live longer and healthier lives, investing for retirement income has become more important than ever. Whether retirement is closer than you like to admit or off on the distant horizon here are some key points you should consider. • Have a plan! The single biggest mistake is having no strategy at all when it comes to your retirement. I have found that many people fail to develop a plan because they are intimidated by the complexities of retirement accounts and investments. Creating a strategy can be simple with the help of the right financial advisor and may increase your potential for success, both before and after retirement. • Once you have put a retirement plan into place take the time to review and fine-tune it regularly. Even the most
n the midst of today’s increasingly complex financial markets, the services of a skilled investment professional are more valuable than ever before. Experienced financial advisors have the ability to assist with a wide range of financial issues, from everyday money management to crafting sophisticated investment strategies. Of utmost importance is working with an advisor who takes the time to learn about you and your goals. A financial planning professional can assist their clients with a broad array of situations from simple budgeting, to debt counseling, to building and protecting your retirement nest egg.
basic retirement plan will need adjustments made to it over time. Both market conditions and your life circumstances are constantly changing so a “set it and forget it” approach isn’t recommended. This is especially important if you are within 3-5 years from retirement. The last thing you can afford is to have your retirement portfolio take a dive due to a sharp fall in stock prices and a sustained bear market at the same time you’re ready to stop working. Consider adjusting your asset allocation in advance of retirement so you protect the nest egg you’ve worked so hard to build. • Avoid chasing “hot” investments as this often leads to disappointment and losses. Don’t pay too much attention to financial “news” outlets, recognizing that their job is to create activity and sell advertising-not to give you sound advice on your specific situation is key. Create an asset allocation strategy that is properly diversified to reflect your goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon; then make adjustments based
on changes in your personal situation, not due to market fluctuations. • Focus on reducing debt prior to retirement. If too much debt is bad when you’re working and making money, it can be overwhelming when you’re living in retirement. Becoming debt free, or as close as possible, will significantly enhance your retirement. Not to mention the good money management habits you create while paying down that debt and living within your means will come in very handy when you are living on your retirement income. • Retirement isn’t only about money: Above all, an enjoyable retirement requires good health, so maintain a healthy lifestyle and take care of you. Focus on doing the things you enjoy and remain both physically and socially active.

Save With Pellets!
Pellet Stove for Home Heating Sizing Each pellet stove produces a specific amount of heat, measured
Pellet stoves burn small, compressed pellets of wood to heat the home. These clean-burning stoves offer a much higher level of energy efficiency than traditional wood stoves and fireplaces, and produce virtually no smoke. When choosing a pellet stove for home heating, consider factors such as maintenance, design and size to find the model that best suits your needs. in British Thermal Units, or BTUs. Choosing a unit that produces too much heat for your home is a waste of money, and can make your home uncomfortably warm. A unit that's too small may not provide enough heat on colder days. As a rule of thumb, a stove rated at 60,000 BTUs can heat a 2,000 square foot home, while one offering 42,000 BTUs can heat a home measuring 1,300 square feet. Maintenance Removing ash represents the biggest maintenance requirement associated with a pellet stove. The type of stove you choose can significantly affect ash accumulation and maintenance. According to the EPA, top-fed stoves often fill with ash and require a great deal of cleanup. Bottom-fed stoves, where pellets enter from the
base of the stove, push ash out into an ash pan for easier cleanup. Type Pellet stoves come in two basic models, including freestanding units and fireplace inserts. If you have an existing fireplace, a pellet stove insert can tie directly into your existing chimney, but will prevent you from using the fireplace to burn wood. Freestanding models require a separate exhaust vent, but offer greater flexibility as to where you can place them in the home. Power Supply Most pellet stoves come with an auto-start ignition for easy operation. If the power goes out, you won't be able to use your stove. If you plan to use your pellet stove as your primary source of heat, or you live in an area with frequent outages, choose a pellet stove equipped with a battery backup system. Appearance While comparing features of different pellet stoves, don't forget to consider how the unit will look in your home. These stoves can blend in with the decor or serve as a focal point within a room. Find a model that comes in a color and style that works with your home design. If you like the cozy feeling of watching a fire burn, look for stoves with glass windows that allow you to watch the pellets smolder.
Heating your Home witH pellets allows you to save time, money and the planet. Featuring 100% renewable energy and requiring less work than wood stoves, clean burning pellet heat offers no mess while significantly reducing heating costs. Fireplace inserts are made from cast iron or steel and have self-cleaning glass doors that allow the dancing flames of the fire to be viewed while the insulated doors remain closed, making the fire more efficient. Many manufacturers also augment the operation of fireplace inserts by offering stateof-the-art features such as fans and thermostatic controls. (depending on the fuel).
ENHANCED EFFICIENCY
Almost all North Americans with older wood-burning fireplaces can benefit from the installation of a fireplace insert. Generally, older fireplaces have efficiency ratings of just five to ten percent. This low efficiency is due to the open combustion design that allows an abundance of heated room air to be drawn into the fire, causing the

fire to burn too fast and wasting energy. In contrast, a fireplace insert is an insulated, closed-door system that slows the fire down and increases the temperature of the fire to facilitate more complete combustion. This closed combustion system can assist in generating efficiencies of above 65 percent in many cases which can translate into more heat output. And, when it comes to burning wood, an EPAcertified wood-burning fireplace insert can also reduce emissions from wood burning to almost zero.
VARIETY OF FUEL OPTIONS
Determining which fuel type to select when purchasing a fireplace insert depends on the cost and availability of the fuel, the desired efficiency and heat output, as well as the level of maintenance requirements and the desired appearance of the fire by the user. While most fireplace inserts manufactured today are extremely efficient, the choice is often dictated by a person’s individual needs.
SELECTING A FIREPLACE INSERT
Much like any other appliance, it is important to spend the time to choose a fireplace insert that fits your needs and your lifestyle, whether more formal or relaxed. Before making a final decision, visit a specialty retailer for experienced advice. A specialty retailer is a trained fireplace insert specialist. He or she can arrange for the safe and reliable installation of a fireplace insert by a certified professional installer. These experts are also the best source of information about how to correctly operate a fireplace insert, and can suggest a proper maintenance program.

chiropractic physician WHAT IS A CHIROPRACTIC PHYSICIAN (DC)?
Chiropractic Physicians (DC) are licensed health care professionals concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of neuromusculoskeletal conditions, spinal related health problems and the effects of these conditions on the nervous system and a person’s overall general health. Chiropractic care is a natural and conservative method of treating and respecting the human body’s ability to heal itself.
QUESTIONS TO ASK
You may wish to start your search by asking friends, co-workers and relatives for recommendations. Next, set up an appointment with the doctor to make sure he or she is someone you are comfortable talking with. There are many questions you may wish to ask at this appointment: • Which college did he/she attend? This is important as these schools must meet certain standards with specific courses. Chiropractic colleges focus on chiropractic principles, diagnosis, orthopedics, physiologic therapeutics and nutrition. Three areas – manipulative/ adjustive techniques/spinal analysis, physical clinical laboratory diagnosis, and diagnostic imaging – account for more than half of the education in clinical sciences. During their internship chiropractic physicians complete two years of hands-on clinical experience focusing on spinal manipulation/ adjustment as the primary treatment procedure. • Does the doctor regularly attend continuing education seminars? • What are the chiropractic physician’s feelings about where chiropractic care fits in with other health professions, and what kind of experience he/she has with patients who have similar problems as you.
• Discuss the finances. Professional chiropractic offices help you understand the financial costs by evaluating your insurance coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. Any doctor whose fees are substantially higher or lower than other chiropractic physicians should raise a warning flag. • Ask about their treatments. Professional chiropractic physicians use adjustment/manipulative treatment, therapeutic rehabilitation and nutritional advice.
YOUR CHIROPRACTIC SPINAL EVALUATION
Before beginning your evaluation, you should fill out health care forms focusing on your problem and past history. Then you should have a private interview with the doctor to discuss your problem in detail. This should be followed by an examination that includes vital signs, a range of orthopedic and neurological tests, and an analysis of your musculoskeletal system. After the history and examination are complete, you should receive a complete report of findings. The doctor should be able to explain your problem to you in clear and understandable terms, discuss options for treatment and outline a customized treatment plan. This includes specific therapeutic goals and an estimate of the frequency and number of visits your condition will require before you can expect to feel better.
THE TREATMENT
Most patients who seek chiropractic care have spinal related subluxations, stiff or tight muscles along the spine and muscles that are in spasm with pain. During the examination, the doctor should have determined which areas of your spine aren’t functioning properly. The chiropractic physician may choose to use ice, heat, massage, trigger point therapy and traction.
Why I Am A Doctor of
CHIROPRACTIC
Because I honor the inborn potential of everyone to be truly healthy. Because I desire to help the newborn, the aged, and those without hope. Because I choose to care for the patient with the disease, not the disease. Because I wish to assist rather than intrude, to free rather than to control. Because I seek to correct the cause, not its effect. Because I know doctors do not heal, only the body can heal itself. Because I have been called to serve others. Because I want to make a difference. Because everyday I get to witness miracles.

How - to choose an appliance BEFORE BUYING, CONSIDER WHERE THE APPLIANCE WILL BE STORED AND USED
Often the basic appliance unit is the same for several brands, but the price increases as the added features increase. This is true on major appliances… tall new models are energy savers.
Be sure where you’ll use it is wired adequately and that there’s an outlet available. Don’t use extension cords unless it’s absolutely necessary. Cords reduce efficiency and may be dangerous. Once you’ve decidedyou really need the appliance and that you have room for it… consider the original price tag plus any installation, operating and maintenance costs. Low operating costs may make energy-efficient models worth the initial higher price. For example: some new models of refrigerators and freezers are 50 percent more energy efficient than models 10 years old. Check the yellow and black Energy Guide Levels on major appliances for energy information.
CHECK THE COST OF CREDIT If you can anticipate buying an appliance, try to save a little each month so you can pay cash and avoid the cost of installment buying. You may even
get a lower price if you can pay cash. Anticipating your purchase will also give you time to get the information you need to buy wisely. If you know you’ll be buying a major appliance, start reading ads, consumer magazines and buying guides. Ask friends and relatives about the models they have and which features they use or don’t use.
WARRANTY OR GUARANTEE Take time to read the written guarantee… don’t just take the word of the salesperson. When you buy, remember to fill out and mail the warranty cards. Look for safety seals and seals of approval. The UL seal (Underwriters’ Laboratory) is probably the best known safety seal. Another seal, a blue star emblem, may be found on gas appliances. It means that the design and construction meet safety and performance standards of the American Gas Association Laboratories. Some magazines and other groups have seals of approval, too, but they vary in their worth to the consumer. Don’t assume that a seal assures quality. For the most part, appliances on the market do what they are designed to do. Your choice of brand and price will depend on personal preference and individual need rather than actual differences in function and quality. For more information on choosing appliances for your home, contact your local county extension office.

How - to choose a lawn service We all enjoy a beautiful lawn, but few of us are nuts about the blood, sweat and tears needed to make your lawn look beautiful. Fortunately, especially if you have – as many people do these days – well over a 40-hour work week, help can be inexpensive. What’s your time worth, anyway?
If you work long hours and hate the thought of grinding through a wet, overgrown lawn every weekend, when you should be having fun, you might consider hiring a lawn care service to take care of the chores for you.
Like everything else, mowing jobs can be both good and bad. A professional Lawn Care Specialist will first consult with you about the desired height of your grass. The standard recommendations, of course, are that blades of grass be three inches high, and that no more than one third be trimmed when mowed. But that’s up to you. The fact is that many beautiful lawns are much shorter than three inches. Another thing you’ll notice about skilled lawn care professionals is that they often mow on the diagonal and will occasionally change their patterns. That’s because grass will be more resilient, uniform and likely to stand up if it isn’t mowed exactly the same way time after time. Some prefer to bag their clippings, but in doing that, you take the added nutrients in your lawn away. Instead of bagging, mulching is recommended to minimize the amount of clippings left
on your lawn, and put those important nutrients back into your lawn. It is also recommended that you dethatch your lawn in the spring to remove the excess mulch. Dethatching in the spring rejuvenates your lawn from the weight of the snow over the winter and promotes healthier growth. Good lawn care specialists will know about how often they need to hit your lawn, and you can put the whole operation on auto-pilot while you sip ice tea poolside. However, make sure you have a clear understanding of how much money you’re willing to spend over the course of a season. Every five days might be good in May. Come August, it might be every two weeks. Set a spending limit and you won’t have to worry about a surprise in the mail. Frankly, good lawn care specialists are evident around town. When you see the local lawn company at work, see how good the work looks. Look at the equipment, too. One of the ironclad rules of good mowing is to keep mower blades sharp. If the equipment is filthy or dented and scratched, you might wonder what shape the blades are in. Blade damage is inevitable, but it’s no excuse for a shoddy mowing job. It can never be said too much: Make sure your lawn care service is licensed and insured. And whatever you do, don’t allow just anyone to mow your lawn. Sure, mowing looks easy. But what happens when your uninsured, careless, socalled professional puts a rock through that brand new picture window while mowing your lawn?

How - to selecting paint Painting is a quick and cheap way to give an old room a breath of fresh air or to make your house more saleable if you are putting it on the market.
Which paint should you choose? Paint comes in a variety of sheens as well as in either oil or latex. Latex paint is the most commonly and preferred paint type to use because of its ease of clean Find out all you have ever up and long wanted to know about lasting durability. selecting paint. However, oil based paint is great for priming real wood moldings and trim as it tends to seal stains and knots from the wood better than a latex paint wood. The glossier the paint, the easier it is to clean up. High gloss is also great for trim and will give the trim a nice finished look. Semi-gloss and satins would also be a good choice for kitchens and baths as well as trim providing ease of washability and less shine than the gloss. If you have walls with lots of imperfections, select a flat or matte paint. Eggshell hides imperfections like a flat does but is easier to wash, so more durable and smoother to the touch.
What colors should i choose? Painting with cool colors such as blues, greens and purples makes small rooms appear larger and more airy while colors such as reds, yellows and oranges will give a room a more vibrant appearance. You can vary the warmth even with
a red or yellow by choosing muted shades of those colors such as pink or peach. Shades are either pure or vibrant, muted or shaded. Your local paint store has color charts with suggestions on color combinations and color samples. The knowledgeable sales people can also help you choose which kind of paint to use, depending on the location of the room and how it will be used.
choosing the right paint for your home’s exterior Are you getting ready to paint the exterior of your home? Paint can be used on wood siding and also on vinyl siding. If the vinyl siding on your home is faded, you can paint over it. Your paint store will help you choose which paints to use for either wood or vinyl, including base coats and final coats. When selecting the best exterior house paint or stain for your home, keep in mind the following attributes: • Durability and overall performance • Resistance to mold and mildew • Resistance to ultraviolet radiation • Ease of application • Environmentally friendly • Selecting Exterior Paint Colors In addition to its protective value, a new coat of paint or stain can be aesthetically transforming– and choosing a paint color is always a challenge. Generally, neutral colors work well on all homes. If you like bright or bold colors, they can be incorporated in trim work, like shutters, doors and window trim. This is a good way to put your individual spin on your home.

You will need to call the towing companies that have been recommended by your auto insurance agent as well as any that have been recommended by your friends and family. A good place to start your search is by calling your auto insurance agent, they will be able to tell you the companies that they prefer to work with. The advantage to this information is that, generally, the procedure to being reimbursed is much simpler when you use a company that is preferred by your insurance agent. Consider these tips when looking for a
towing service: • Get a Tow Truck Smartphone App: If you own a smartphone, it’s a good idea to download a tow truck smartphone app. Tow Truck Finder is a popular app. It allows you to find a nearby tow truck no matter where you live. • Search Towing.com: If you’re stranded at home, check Towing.com, this website allows you to search for tow truck services by ZIP code. It provides towing company names, phone numbers and hours of operation. • Call Your Mechanic: If your car won’t start and you’re in town, call a mechanic. Most mechanics work closely with tow truck services and can provide a recommendation. Have your mechanic’s phone number programmed into your phone. • Shop Around: Before you settle on a tow truck service, compare prices. Don’t let emotions get the best of you during a stressful situation. Take your time and make the right decision.

How - to hire the right accountant Here are some tips that will help you find the right accountant for home or business: • Think about Almost everyone needs a what you really good accountant from time need. Can you to time, and it’s wise to get by with a establish a relationship with bookkeeper to one who understands your perform simple finances, your business, your clerical tasks, or do you need tax needs, your family plans expert help and your personal goals. This with operating is especially true if you own a statements, small business, because balance personal and business sheets and tax finances are often closely documents? intertwined. Most businesses hire both. And while many accountants can handle all of your needs, you may need specialists for certain aspects of your business or investment portfolios. • Consider the source when obtaining referrals. Get them from people you trust and whose business acumen you respect. Don’t rely on casual acquaintances for such an important decision. • While many people are familiar with the term, “Certified Public Accountant,” there are several certifications available that will work perfectly well with your needs. Don’t let the initials on the accountant’s business card get in the way of working with the right one, but do make sure your accountant is formally certified to practice his or her specialty. • Tax preparation can even be done by non-accountants. But for relatively little money, a good CPA will turn your taxes around quickly
and spot opportunities to secure the best possible refund. • Your accountant’s fee schedule should be the least of your concerns. Market pressure will ensure that most of the accountants in a geographical area will be within a narrow range of fees. What you want is someone with whom you feel comfortable. • He or she should be well versed in tax and investment laws and regulations, and scrupulously honest, of course. But you also want someone who’s empathetic – just as with a physician, someone who has a good “bedside” manner. You want to work with an accountant who takes a sincere interest in your financial wellbeing and who keeps up with business trends. • Make sure you and your prospective accountant agree on how aggressively he or she will handle income tax reporting and tax deductions, and don’t expect your accountant to step into questionable or unethical territory. A good accountant will err on the side of caution. • Once you’ve established a relationship, expect your accountant to be prompt. The best will always have time to consult, even in the midst of tax season. If your accountant keeps you waiting too long, find another. Finally, respect your accountant’s need for time to prepare statements and taxes. Often, your accountant will ask you to honor deadlines – especially during tax season – and you should. Also, help your accountant (and save money) by having your tax paperwork well organized.

If you’re paying for repairs yourself be aware there are different ways of making repairs, and multiple repair methods can be correct but lead to a big price difference. The old maxim about looking “too good to be true” may be a signal that you should compare the repair methods as well as prices. Ask your friends for recommendations. It’s best to find out which local businesses have great reputations. Finally, when you receive your estimate, ask about the shops warranty. Rust repairs will not be warrantied at any shop but for other auto body repairs look for a minimum one-year warranty on the parts and a limited lifetime warranty on repairs and paint. Ask your shop for a copy of the warranty and the final repair invoice when you pick up your vehicle. Keep these records and any maintenance records to retain the resale value of your vehicle.
Johnson’s Car Sales and Body Shop has been family owned and operated for over 60 years. How - to find a full service salon Looking for the best full-service salon can be the most difficult part of the experience. When considering hair, nails and tanning, there are certain things you should look for.
HAIR
• Ask your friends and acquaintances about their stylists. If you see someone on the street who has a haircut you admire, don’t hesitate to ask for the stylist’s name. Most will be flattered and only too happy to tell you. • Pick a salon with a good reputation and ask for a stylist who specializes in your type of hair, or choose based on what you’ve heard. • Schedule a consultation, for which the salon shouldn’t charge. • Find out as much as you can about that particular stylist, how long he or she has been in business and what products he or she prefers. • Evaluate the stylist’s own hair to see if it’s chic and healthy-looking.
NAILS
• Make sure the manicurist’s license is current and displayed. • Study how the manicurists work at a prospective salon. Metal tools should go straight into disinfectant after use, and nail files and buffing blocks should be brand-new for each client. Since dirty nail care equipment can harbor and pass on tenacious fungal infections, consider taking your own tools and polish for your manicurist to use. They can be kept at the salon for you. • Observe how the foot baths are cleaned and if fresh hand towels are used for each customer. • Stop any snip-happy manicurist who tries to clip your cuticles. They tear more easily as they grow back, can look ugly and are more vulnerable to infections and fungus. A manicurist should use cuticle softening oil after a warm soak, then gently ease them back with an orangewood stick. • Go glamorous and get gel nail tips for $20 to $40, but bear in mind that you’ll need to return regularly for fills as the nail grows out. Or get a silk wrap to
strengthen existing nails. Tips soften and weaken nails, but can cure chronic nailbiting.
TANNING
• Start with 5 to 7 minutes of exposure to the sun or a tanning lamp, and gradually increase the time as your body becomes more tanned. • Start with a sunscreen with an SPF factor of under 15, but no less than 8. • Keep skin moisturized with after-sun lotion – preferably with aloe – to make your tan last. • Always protect your eyes while tanning. • Tanning booths and beds subject your body to the same general kinds of rays as the sun emits. You can get sunburned in a tanning bed.
FACIALS
• More and more women have discovered the deep cleansing and beauty benefits of facials. Facials are complicated, however, and require a number of steps and ingredients. These may include steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, masks, peels and massage. Done well, a facial will make you feel fresh, alive and young!
MASSAGE THERAPIST
• Identify your goals and health status. Are you interested in: reducing stress? Reducing muscle contractions or tightness? Living without chronic or acute pain? Improving your work performance? Get some names. Many people are most comfortable getting a personal referral from a friend. Another great source for referrals is your primary healthcare provider or a medical specialist. Other sources are professional associations. Make a phone call to find out more about the therapist. If you don’t already have this information, call and ask about: style or techniques used, philosophy of care, years in practice, specialty areas, training, advanced certification and ask about costs and logistics.

outdoor wood furnace HOW IT WORKS The standard wood furnace looks like a small metal shed with a chimney. It stands anywhere from 30 to several hundred feet from your home and it works by circulating water These freestanding heat through two supply sources are cleaner, heat exchangers. more efficient and more The first is the sophisticated than many furnace itself, in people realize. which the wood is used to heat a surrounding jacket of water. The second is inside the house. Heated water is circulated through to the house via underground insulated piping, where it then transfers heat into your forced air furnace, boiler or radiant floor heating system. While bypassing the need for expensive fossil fuels, it works with your existing equipment and enables you to control the temperature with your thermostat. Plus, your outdoor wood furnace will heat your home’s water. You can also heat multiple buildings. Since the wood is consumed outside, in a fully enclosed furnace, you won’t have to worry about messy wood in the house, chimney fires, carbon monoxide or deterioration of your indoor air quality. Nor will you have the smoke, ashes, smells and soot buildup that you get from most ordinary indoor wood stoves. When you consider wood, it’s also much more environmentally friendly than fossil fuel. Burning it only releases the carbon dioxide that the wood would naturally release into the atmosphere over time; there is no net increase to
atmospheric carbon dioxide. The best models offer superior insulation, metal that resists warping, secondary combustion for efficiency and long, clean burning so that you’re not out in the snow at all hours tossing wood through the door. The same companies often manufacture corn and wood pellet furnaces. In farm country, shelled corn and pellets can be very inexpensive. While they won’t cut your bill to zero, like wood, they’ll cut it by half.
IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU? This is most economical for people who have abundant supplies of cheap or free wood. Most users have at least a couple acres of land from which to cut a steady supply of wood while growing more. More often than not, outdoor furnaces are found in rural locations, with generous space between neighbors. This isn’t necessary, but you should check local zoning restrictions and regulations before ordering one for your home. In an efficient wood furnace, the smoke is not usually an irritant, but you should be careful about the furnace’s placement, which is something your dealer can help with. You’ll have to be willing to stoke your furnace at least once a day, too. But, except for extraordinary cold and wind, once a day will do it. Do you hate high heating bills? Assuming you’ve got the wood, this furnace is the answer. People have reported saving over $4,000 a year in heating costs.

Are the groups small or large? How often do the children bring friends home? These are practical matters you must consider.
THE MAGIC OF COLOR
You may have heard that dark colors make a room look smaller. It’s true. So you should stay away from dark colors, right? Wrong! If your objective is to create a warm, cozy, and sheltered look, a smaller “feel” is exactly what you want and dark, rich colors like warm browns and rust, can work great. If a dark color is what you love, and it helps you capture the mood you want, go for it! Pastels and color tints tend to enlarge a space. These colors create a restful and soothing mood. They’re ideal when you want a formal, orderly and romantic tone. Strong contrasts of color that are lively, exciting and energetic can be a bold statement for your family’s style of living.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CARPET “TYPE” FOR YOU
To shop with confidence, you need to know what kinds of carpet are available and what each is designed to do. All carpets begin with a “loop pile”. To make a “cut pile” the tips of loops are sheared off, which produces the smooth finish velvets and other styles. Cut pile carpets are by far the most common type bought by consumers because they have the most luxurious look and feel. Here are some different carpet styles: Multilevel Loops, Level Loop, Cut and Loop or “traceries”, Velvets, Saxonies or “Plushes”, Textured Saxonies, and Friezes.
OTHER CARPET BUYING CONSIDERATIONS
Avoid bargains. Cheap carpet is easy to spot; it’s thin, lightweight and flimsily made. Buy good quality padding; it absorbs up to 90 percent of the impact of foot traffic. A higher investment in carpet padding will extend the life of your carpet. It’s worth the extra initial cost.
WHERE SHOULD I GO TO PURCHASE FLOOR COVERING?
Always buy from a reputable dealer. If in doubt, contact the Better Business Bureau. Independent dealers are a good bet. They usually have a wide selection of custom goods at their disposal, plus better grade carpet pads and qualified installers.

How - to senior housing It’s important to learn the terminology and the differences between senior care solutions that are out there so With so many senior housing you can make the options available, it’s easy right choice for your family. to feel confused and overSenior whelmed by the vast number independent of care types and styles of living senior living communities. communities cater to seniors who are very independent with few medical problems. Residents live in fully equipped private apartments. Often, residents can choose to pay for a specified number of meals per day. Frequently, there are numerous social outings and events to choose from for entertainment. Assisted Living communities are designed for seniors who are no longer able to live on their own safely but do not require the high level of care provided in a nursing home. Assistance with medications, activities of daily living, meals and housekeeping are routinely provided. Three meals per day are provided in a central dining room. Residents live in private apartments which frequently have a limited kitchen area. Staff is available 24 hours per day Nursing homes provide aroundthe-clock skilled nursing care for the frail elderly who require a high level of medical care and assistance. Twenty-four hour skilled nursing services are available from licensed nurses. Many nursing homes now provide short-term rehabilitative stays for those recovering from an injury, illness or surgery. Some senior housing options for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s are available. With
memory impaired, it is important to have 24-hour support and structured activities to ensure their safety and quality of life. Residential care homes, also known as adult foster care homes, are private homes that typically serve residents who live together and receive care from live-in caretakers. These homes offer assisted care services for seniors who want a more private, homelike community. Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing are typically provided. Choosing the right type of senior living facility depends on how much care and the type of care needed. Seniors and their families are encouraged to not wait until the last minute to investigate these options. Even if you are active and still living in your own home, visit your local senior living communities so you can find the “right fit” when the time comes. Ask about activities offered, how much it will cost, payment options (some will accept Medicare and Medicaid, others are strictly private pay), whether a contract is required or a month-by-month setup is sufficient. Take a look at the apartments, perhaps share a meal in the dining room, and talk to the residents. Looking ahead to the various options available will make the transition easier when the time comes to move into a senior community and will relieve the anxiety many older adults face when they think about the future and what it might hold for them. Just knowing what is available in your community will help seniors and their families to decide which facility is the best fit.

choose an apartment When you’re looking for an apartment, three components need to fit; you, the apartment, and the apartment community.
When you check out an apartment, check out the company that manages it and staff who come with it. Just as you know a good on site staff can make your life pleasant, so every apartment community recognizes the value of a good resident.
CHECKING OUT AN APARTMENT
One of the first things you should take note of as you drive in to your appointment is the apartment community’s curb appeal. Is the community clean and neat? Is there adequate lighting? Is the landscaping appealing? An apartment community that takes good care of the buildings and grounds will typically take good care of residents! Once you arrive try to get a feel for the staff that maintains the apartment community. Is
the staff friendly and pleasant? Are they well informed about the community and able to answer your questions? When viewing the apartment you should take note of the condition of the entryway and hallway leading to the apartment. Is it clean and orderly? When entering the apartment you should look at the condition of the carpet to see if it looks clean and well kept. Are the walls in good shape? Has the apartment been painted and cleaned since the last resident moved out? Is the size adequate for your needs? Is there enough storage space? Are there any “deal breakers” as far as the condition of the apartment? Some of the questions you should ask • When is the apartment available? • How much is the rent? • When is the rent due? • How much is the security deposit? • What are the terms of the lease?
• What length of lease terms are available? • Are pets allowed? • Is there emergency maintenance service? • Are there any rules about subletting or roommates? • Are you allowed to make any modifications to the apartment such as painting it. • Are there laundry facilities on site? • What utilities are included? • What criteria need to be met in order to qualify for the apartment – such as credit criteria, income, etc.? You may want to bring any information you think you may need in order to lease the apartment with you the day of your appointment. pair wine
with food EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES All wine drinkers have heard that white wine is best served with white meat and red wine with red. That’s basically true, but ignores the amazing world of flavors of all kinds of wines. It also ignores the magical way in which the right wine can interact with a well-mated food dish. Wine and food should come together deliberately. First, get to know the varietals. Experiment. Try everything once, and try the same Keep a notebook handy in wine from different which to write down your vintners. You wines and opinions. RED If you want to pair red wine with red meat, begin with Cabernet and steak. Cabernet is what fans call a big red. Good “cabs” are redolent with tannins, which come from the oak in which the wine is aged as well as the grape skins. Tannins are astringent and cleanse the palate. A cab with
good tannins and a good steak can make a superb combination. People often pair Zinfandel with venison and elk, Pinot Noir with quail or duck, or – again – with steak. A good Zinfandel is peppery and goes well with spicy dishes. With pasta and other spicy Italian or Mediterranean dishes, you really should try some Italian varietals, as well. There’s Chianti, of course, which has a unique flavor. Other Italian reds include Barbera and Barbaresco. You can almost never go wrong pairing wine and food from the same country or region, which often have been refined for centuries to accompany each other.

Capture the Experience!
how to shop for antiques You can buy antiques at auctions, shops, shows, and online. You may even discover treasures at garage sales and flea markets. Before you make any purchase, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, and the Professional Show Managers Buying and selling Association, a antiques and collectibles not-for-profit organization is big business. representing antiques and collectibles show producers, say it’s a smart buyer who learns about the differences between genuine antiques, reproductions, and their fake counterparts. Before you shop for antiques, it’s important to understand some terms used in the marketplace. • By law, an antique is an item that’s at least 100 years old. • A collectible is just about anything that people collect. If an item is labeled a vintage collectible it is at least 50 years old. • A reproduction is an item created to look like an original, but that has no value in the antiques world.
Shopping & Buying TipS
It’s a good idea to research antiques before you buy them. This may include visiting antique shops, malls, and auctions; talking with collectors and reputable dealers; and reading price guides, auction catalogs, books, and magazines. When shopping at an antique shop or mall, ask questions: • How long have you been a dealer?
• Do you carry reproductions? Be careful: Some reproductions are so well done that even experts can have trouble recognizing them for what they are. • Will you guarantee the authenticity of the item in writing? • What is your return policy? When you decide to buy an item, get a written receipt that includes the seller’s name, address, and phone number; the date; a complete description of the item, including age, origin, any repairs or replacements, the price you paid, and how you paid; and, if the seller claims the item is authentic, a written guarantee. If you’re buying online, here are a few additional points to consider. • Ask the seller to send you close-up photographs of the item. • Ask if the item can be purchased and shipped on an “approval” basis. This allows you to inspect the item and perhaps have a local expert take a look at it, too. • Ask the seller how the item will be packed and shipped, and the shipping costs.
Buying aT garage and eSTaTe SaleS and flea markeTS
Garage sales and estate sales may be a treasure trove of antiques and collectibles, but usually there is no guarantee an item is genuine. But that can be the fun of garage sales, you never know what you might find. Who knows, you could be the next surprised collector on Antiques Roadshow when you discover that $5 dust-covered painting is really a Picasso.

How - to
choose
an auto repair shop
Trust the Midas Touch™. www.midas.com
One of the best ideas for vehicle maintenance and repair is to find a qualified shop to first prevent problems, and, should one occur, be able to find it efficiently and fix it.
GOOD IDEAS • Look for an auto repair shop before you need one. Avoid being rushed into last minute decisions. • State or local law may require the repair shop Today’s vehicles may not to be licensed or quite be the space shuttle, registered, and but they are far removed you should ask from the days when that to see current little clicking sound could be licenses. • Find a repair diagnosed by any mechanic shop that honors your vehicle’s warranty. • Shop around among comparable shops for the best deal.
FINDING THE RIGHT TECHNICIAN Look for shops that display various certifications like an Automotive Service Excellence seal. Certifications indicate that some or all of the technicians have met basic standards of knowledge and competence in specific technical area. Make sure the certifications were recently obtained.
REPAIR CHARGES Always get and keep a signed written cost estimate for the work to be performed. Make sure the estimate specifically identifies the condition to be repaired, the parts needed and the anticipated labor charge.
Make sure the estimate states that the shop will contact you for approval before performing any work exceeding a specified amount of time and money. Some shops charge a flat rate for labor on auto repairs. This published rate is based on independent or manufacturer’s estimate of the time required to complete repairs. Other shops charge on the basis of the actual time the technician worked on the repair. Even though you bring your car in with a specific problem, additional repairs may be recommended. Ask if there will be a diagnostic charge if you decide to have the work performed elsewhere. Many repair shops charge for diagnostic time.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE Since many parts of your vehicle are inter-related, ignoring maintenance can lead to failure of other parts or an entire system. Neglecting even simple preventive maintenance, such as changing the oil or checking the coolant, can lead to poor fuel economy, unreliability or costly breakdowns and could invalidate your warranty. The best way to keep a vehicle in good condition is to follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual for your type of driving. If you do not have an owner’s manual, contact the manufacturer to obtain one or to get a recommended maintenance schedule.
