Little River Band of Ottawa Indians

The Little River Ottawa descends from members of certain Grand River Ottawa Bands who live in villages located on the Manistee River, Pere Marquette River and several villages on the Grand River system in Michigan. As a result of historic circumstances, that portion of the Grand River Ottawa people, now known as the Little River Band of Ottawa, had its status as a federally recognized Indian tribe reaffirmed and restored by the United States in 1994. The tribe is led by Ogema Larry Romanelli and offers a variety of services to its membership. The tribe also operates a natural resources office that oversees hunting and fishing and a highly successful sturgeon program. The LRBOI operates the Little River Casino Resort, which opened in 1999. Since then, it has expanded in multiple stages. For more information on the tribe’s functions in Manistee County, and the tribe in general, visit www.lrboi.com.

2017 MANISTEE COUNTY FACT BOOK

Manistee County fun facts What is the history of the Ramsdell Theatre?

Built in 1903 by local lawyer and philanthropist Thomas Jefferson Ramsdell, the theatre and grand ballroom were designed by renowned Chicago architect Solon Spencer Beman. The most striking feature of the green and gold interior is the horseshoe balcony supported by numerous pillars which extend to the tin-plated ceiling. The interior decoration was completed by some very famous artists in their own right: Walter Wilcox Burridge, a renowned scenic painter (original “Wizard of Oz” scenery) painted the front drop curtain entitled “A Grove Near Athens.”

Where does the name Manistee come from?

Who settled Manistee?

The name “Manistee” is from an Ojibwe word first applied to the principal river of the county. The derivation is not certain but it may be from ministigweyaa, “river with islands at its mouth”. Other sources claim that it was an Ojibwe term meaning “spirit of the woods.” Not just oil, Pennzoil.™

"Where a Kennel is a Home"

The first permanent Euro-American settlement was made on April 16, 1841, when John Stronach and his son, Adam Stronach, arrived at the mouth of the Manistee River in a schooner loaded with fifteen men and equipment, and established a saw mill.
