oe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers say they will make a sprightly young groove doctor out of anyone. The Rainbow Seekers will take the stage Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. at the corner of Loomis and Rath for a headlining set at this year’s Octoberfest. The Michigan band has developed a major following with their eclectic music, which contains traces of everything from Motown to folk, Americana to blues, and everything in between. With an instrumental plethora including saxophones, violins and multiple percussion instruments, Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers are sure to offer something for just about everyone. Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers have garnered national attention with their studio albums “On Being” and “Terra Incognita,” but for the band, performing live is everything. “The live show is the purpose of the band. This is why we make music. Playing music is a symbiotic process, and without a crowd it is just a bunch of guys jamming,” says Hertler. “We believe that perfor-

mance is not a high art operation, and that you should do anything you can to ensure that the crowd is having a good time. From piñatas to confetti, to fog, to flowers, to drum solos, to strobe lights, to Thor, to sword battles — literally anything goes.” Joe Hertler and the The Rainbow Seekers will bring their famous live show to Ludington, along with the Chadron Polka Band, Juice Box Heroes and the Sleeping Gypsies for the fourth annual Octoberfest Music and Craft Beer Festival, Oct. 7-8 in downtown Ludington.

ummer might be over, but fall is in full swing — and you can celebrate the autumn spirit with Ludington’s Octoberfest. Slated for Oct. 7-8, the two-day event offers a pub crawl, chili walk, games and a music festival. Of course, German attire is encouraged. This is the event’s fourth year, and according to Jen Tooman of the Downtown Ludington Board, it has become increasingly popular in the years since its inception. “It used to be more of a Friday Night Live event, and it just sort-of grew into

a bigger festival,” Tooman said. “It’s a pretty big event for being off-season.”

ROCKIN’ OCTOBER Saturday’s lineup of events includes the Music Festival. “(John Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers) is our headliner, who we’re super excited about,” Tooman said. “They’re just a high energy show. (Their music), I would say, is folk to punk, Americana, but if you listen to their latest stuff, it’s something you might hear on WMOM. It’s very unique.” Festive tunes from the Chadron Polka Band will start off the day’s lineup. “That’ll be the first band that plays, the Chardon Polka Band,” Tooman said. “They’ll give the German feel to October-

fest.” Juicebox Heroes will take the stage next. “That’s a local group made up of some of Ludington’s best musicians,” Tooman said. “It’s a crazy blend of rock, and swing and blues.”

GOOD EATS And make sure to come hungry — among the festivities is a chili walk, which offers samples of various spicy, hearty concoctions. Attendees can vote for their favorite during the walk, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. A returning event, the chili walk has continued to grow in popularity. “Last year, we had 14 businesses participating — this year, we have 27,”

Tooman said. The chili walk com two categories. “We have two categ area in a different gro rants that have been recipes for years,” To Last year’s winner, of the many return co pants can vote for a r tor and retail compet “There are some re out there,” Tooman s Bratwursts, sauerk tato salad, pretzels a treats will be offered

& Grille, the Ludington Pub, Jamesport, P.M. Steamers and the Alley.

PUMPKIN DECORATING Saturday’s events will also include family fun at the James Street Plaza, with kid’s art projects and free pumpkin decorating from noon to 3 p.m. Pumpkin decorating is hosted by the Ludington Area Jaycees. “We have a local farmer that donates the use of a wagon and hay, and about 75-100 pumpkins,” Tooman said. “And then we also have some farmers market vendors who will be setting up (in the plaza). “So there will be some snacks and some crafts.” The collaborative project between the

Maker’s Market of Ludington and the AFFEW summer beach sweeps, a fish sculpture made up of garbage collected off the Stearns Park beach, will be revealed in the plaza during the celebration as well. Octoberfest is sponsored by Bell’s Brewing Co., the Ludington Daily News and WMOM, as well as Chemical Bank, Q Smokehouse, MetalWorks, Exit Realty, Sportsman’s Restaurant & Irish Pub, Renewal by Anderson and All Weather Seal. The Sleeping Gypsies perform Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Sleeping Gypsies

T

he Sleeping Gypsies hail from northern Michigan, where they cultivated their sound based on a confluence of influences ranging from rock and swing to blues and soul. Their music is reminiscent of the classic work of T.

Rex, Van Morrison as well as the more contemporary sounds of The Black Keys. Recognized by Northern Express Magazine as one of northern Michigan’s “local artists to watch,” list, the Sleeping Gypsies were described as a danceable and

progressive rock act that delivered memorable live performances. The band’s self-titled debut album can be purchased at their Octoberfest set as well as at the band’s website at www.thesleepinggypsies. com.

n 2003, Jake Kouwe recruited a group of teenagers to form a genuine oompah style polka band. Now, more than 10 years later, the Chardon Polka Band has become a well-known act far beyond their native Ohio, specifically in the fall Oktoberfest circuit. They have headlines some of the nation’s largest seasonal events. The Chardon Polka Band plays traditional polkas reminiscent of “The Lawrence Welk The Chardon Polka Band performs Saturday at Show,” which has endeared them to tradi- 3 p.m. tionalists.
